Of Plural Worlds, Sophia Mason Apr 2025

Of Plural Worlds, Sophia Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Of Plural Worlds employs installation, soft sculpture, and drawing to visually demonstrate white colonial narratives in Mormonism (The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints) since the mid-1800s. The work uses a museum context as a way “into” the work and to talk about whiteness embedded in institutions. The museum installation however is funny; fabric sculptures won't fool anyone as "real" museum displays. The whole show traffics in obvious theatrical role play. The research is grounded in art theory, performance theory, Institutional Critique and scientific reports to create a space where viewers (especially white viewers) might experience the colonial tendency toward …

Professional Development To Foster Rigorous, Student-Centered Discussions In Literacy, Elizabeth Hain Apr 2025

Professional Development To Foster Rigorous, Student-Centered Discussions In Literacy, Elizabeth Hain

Masters Projects

This project looks at the gap of rigorous student discussion in literacy comprehension. It dives into research showing the impact of academic conversations for literacy comprehension. The project explores how professional development (PD) can equip teachers with strategies to foster student-centered discussions. The PD is designed to build teachers’ ability to implement Question the Author (QtA) techniques and facilitate rigorous, text-based discourse through Academic Conversations. The study aligns with constructivist learning theories, specifically Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and the role of metacognition in reading comprehension. Best implementation to facilitate the PD is post NWEA/State testing, allowing teachers to …

Difference In Clinical Presentation And Surgical Outcomes In Pediatric And Adult Patients With Chiari Malformation Type 1: A Single Center Retrospective Study, Erik Öhlén, Victor Gabriel El-Hajj, Victor E. Staartjes, Pascal Jabbour, Erik Edström, Adrian Elmi-Terander

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1) is a common congenital disorder affecting both children and adults. Although pediatric and adult CM1 patients share many characteristics, the differences between the groups are not fully described.

METHOD: A comparative analysis was made of two previously defined cohorts of adult and pediatric non-syndromic CM1, surgically treated at the study center. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Chicago Chiari outcome scale (CCOS) and radiological outcomes were measured as change in cerebellar tonsil and syringomyelia status.

RESULTS: A total of 209 patients (73 pediatric, 136 adults) were included, with median ages of 11 and 33 …

Stereotype, Stigma, And Discrimination And Prep Use Among Black And Latino Men And Women, Aieshia Brooks Poole Apr 2025

Stereotype, Stigma, And Discrimination And Prep Use Among Black And Latino Men And Women, Aieshia Brooks Poole

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

HIV infections continue to rise in the Southern United States, with Black and Latino men who have sex with men (MSM), bisexual men, and women experiencing disproportionate impacts. Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective biomedical intervention for reducing HIV transmission, disparities in its uptake remain due to healthcare stereotype threat, felt stigma, and everyday discrimination. This quantitative cross-sectional study analyzed secondary data from the Generations: A Study of the Life and Health of LGB People in a Changing Society (2016–2019) to examine the relationship between these psychosocial barriers and PrEP use among Black/Latino MSM, bisexual men, and women aged …

Epilepsy Diagnosis When The Routine Ancillary Tests Are Normal, Boulenouar Mesraoua, Bassel Abou-Khalil, Bernhard Schuknecht, Hassan Al Hail, Musab Ali, Majd A. Abualrob, Khaled Zammar, Ali A. Asadi-Pooya

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Background/Objectives: In a patient suspected of having epilepsy, routine EEG primarily contributes to the recording of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). Similarly, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the gold standard imaging technique for identifying epileptogenic structural brain abnormalities. Various EEG and MRI tools to improve epilepsy diagnosis will be presented. Methods: When the initial EEG fails to record IEDs, various EEG measures that can improve EEG performance are presented; a comprehensive epilepsy-targeted MRI protocol to identify, localize, and characterize an epileptogenic lesion will also be described. Results: Studies show that the initial routine EEG fails to record IEDs in approximately …

Telling The Truth, Seeking Justice: Feminist Pedagogy And The Comfort Women Legacy, Sina Lee Apr 2025

Telling The Truth, Seeking Justice: Feminist Pedagogy And The Comfort Women Legacy, Sina Lee

Feminist Pedagogy

This commentary explores the pedagogical significance of teaching the legacy of comfort women—women subjected to sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II—in U.S. gender studies classrooms. Drawing on feminist pedagogy, the essay examines how testimonies from survivors like Hak-sun Kim and Bok-dong Kim empower students to critically engage with the intersections of war, colonialism, gender-based violence, and transnational justice movements. Through assigned readings, survivor testimonies, and documentary media, students confront the ongoing impact of colonialism and are encouraged to reconceptualize peace as a radical, actionable process. The essay also highlights the role of the United States in …

This capstone project focuses on developing and implementing a literacy unit centered on textual evidence. The unit includes three lesson plans designed to help students understand how to find, analyze, and use textual evidence to support their ideas. Each lesson builds on the previous one, using a mix of direct instruction, guided practice, and independent work to gradually increase student confidence and skill in citing evidence.

To measure student understanding, a variety of assessments were integrated throughout the unit. These included formative assessments, such as class discussions and written responses, as well as summative assessments that evaluated students’ ability to …

Looking To Mother Ireland: The Exploration Of Femininity In Nuala Ní Dhomnhaill’S "Cathleen", Lauren Campise

Academic Festival

This paper discusses the word choice, symbolism, and historical significance of Nuala Ní Dhomnhaill's poem, "Cathleen." It examines how the poem challenges traditional Irish portrayals of women, depicting them not as emotional, helpless beings, but as strong, independent individuals with a grounded sense of self. The analysis also reflects on how the poem can fit into the Irish tradition, particularly through the invocation of the name Cathleen Ní Houlihan, Mother Ireland.

Whispers Of Loss, Christina Pais

Academic Festival

This capstone project is a collection of original poems centered on the theme of loss, exploring its emotional complexities and the profound impact it has on personal identity and relationships. Each poem delves into different aspects of loss—whether through the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the quiet erosion of everyday experiences—and reflects on the various ways grief and memory shape our understanding of the world. Alongside the poems, I have included reflective paragraphs that explore the personal significance of each piece, detailing how the themes and emotions conveyed in the work resonate with my …
