Assessments For Aphasia Outside Of English: A Systematic Review, Shea A. Kasenga, Danielle Fahey Apr 2025

Assessments For Aphasia Outside Of English: A Systematic Review, Shea A. Kasenga, Danielle Fahey

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

I am writing a systematic review paper on Assessments for Aphasia Outside of English. This research examines the availability of aphasia assessments in languages other than English, focusing on identifying bilingual assessments and evaluating their norming status. Aphasia is a speech and language disorder resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other neurological conditions, impacting individuals across diverse linguistic backgrounds. With over 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, many Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) require access to aphasia assessments beyond English to evaluate and treat their clients effectively. This systematic review compiles a comprehensive list of aphasia assessments available in languages other than English, …

Transfer Of Treatment Effects Between Languages In Bilingual Agrammatic Aphasia: A Systematic Review, Ashlynn Everett Apr 2025

Transfer Of Treatment Effects Between Languages In Bilingual Agrammatic Aphasia: A Systematic Review, Ashlynn Everett

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Aphasia, a language disorder caused by damage to language regions in the brain, can have profound effects on a person’s communication. For speakers of multiple languages, bilingual aphasia research has demonstrated that treatment in one language can transfer to a non-treated language (Faroqi-Shah & Chengappa, 1996; Paradis, 1993). This systematic review evaluates research on bilingual aphasia to discuss: which grammatical structures can exhibit cross-linguistic transfer of treatment effects, including a) sentential structuring, b) morphosyntax, and/or c) lexical category access?

The review produced 131 articles fitting the inclusion criteria, but only 12 addressed cross-linguistic transfer. Each study’s quality was scored for …

Identifying Relevant Aphasia Assessment For Non-English Speaking And Bilingual Clients, Madison Marker, Emily Abbott, Yana Denishchich Apr 2025

Identifying Relevant Aphasia Assessment For Non-English Speaking And Bilingual Clients, Madison Marker, Emily Abbott, Yana Denishchich

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

This survey aims to collect data on which aphasia assessment is most relevant to translate for use with clients whose native language isn’t currently represented by norm-referenced testing. Aphasia is an acquired language disorder commonly caused by strokes or traumatic brain injuries that impacts receptive and expressive communication skills. Currently, speech language pathologists (SLPs) use assessments including the Western Aphasia Battery Revised (WAB-R) and the Quick Aphasia Battery (QAB) to effectively diagnose patients. This study surveys SLPs practicing internationally to identify experience level with aphasia clients, preferred assessment methods, and which types of questions regarding bilingualism are asked before assessment. …

Archives of Assessment Psychology

Standard scoring methods for the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) require that all core subtests be used to compute index scores, yet it is possible to prorate certain indices using a reduced number of subtests. The purpose of this study is to explore differences in WAIS-IV Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, and Full Scale IQ Index scores as a result of using standard versus prorated scoring methods. Participants were 149 adults, ages 18 to 84 who were previously administered the WAIS-IV. Protocols were scored using standard scoring methods and then re-scored using each alternate proration combination for Verbal Comprehension, …

The Van Tac Vu Program: Psychological Warfare In The Vietnam War, Lucas Schaffer Apr 2025

The Van Tac Vu Program: Psychological Warfare In The Vietnam War, Lucas Schaffer

Proceedings of GREAT Day

During the Vietnam War, the United States ran an extensive program of psychological warfare in order to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of the Vietnamese people. The Van Tac Vu program was one of the many psychological operations conducted by the United States in South Vietnam. Utilizing traveling Vietnamese cultural-drama troupes and drawing from Vietnamese culture, this program sought to win the sympathies of rural Vietnamese whom the Viet Cong were also seeking to influence. The Van Tac Vu cultural-drama troupes had many roles as they worked on the frontlines of the psychological war for Vietnam. They performed propaganda-infused skits, …

Adopting Black Culture Without The Black Experience, Bakhita Solenyanu Apr 2025

Adopting Black Culture Without The Black Experience, Bakhita Solenyanu

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This essay, written in Black Hummanies, will explore the challenges of cultural appropriation and the Black experience while drawing upon the works of The 1619 Project by Nicole Hannah-Jones. It is widely known that American culture significantly draws from Black culture. While many embrace and celebrate many aspects of Black culture, there is often a tendency to overlook the persistent challenges of racism, injustices, and discrimination that many Black Americans face. This selective acknowledgment of Black culture, but not the understanding of the Black experience fails to address the complex realities that many face.

To Follow The Rule Or Not To Follow The Rue, That Is The Question, Beatrice Lovato Apr 2025

To Follow The Rule Or Not To Follow The Rue, That Is The Question, Beatrice Lovato

Academic Festival

This paper explores the ethical dilemma of whether it is more ethical to obey the law or to resist laws that are morally questionable. To examine this issue, I draw a parallel between two historical and contemporary examples: Nazi officers during World War II who implemented genocidal policies, and modern-day ICE officers involved in the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants. By analyzing the motivations, mindsets, and personal responsibility of individuals who enforce state policies, this essay questions the moral agency of those who "just follow orders." It considers the psychological and ethical consequences of such actions, and challenges readers …

Flight Of The Germans: The Displacement And Survival Of Eastern European Germans In The 1940s, Kadin Markus Hawley Apr 2025

Flight Of The Germans: The Displacement And Survival Of Eastern European Germans In The 1940s, Kadin Markus Hawley

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Throughout the 1940s, millions of Europeans were displaced by the infrastructural destruction of war, government actions and prejudices. While the first half of the decade saw many displaced by the implementation of ethnic polices like Generalplan Ost (General Plan East) in Eastern Europe by Nazi Germany, displacement would continue into the late 1940s as postwar politics created new political and ideological borders. This project will focus on the experiences of ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe under Nazi occupation and in the aftermath of war. It will ask how Nazi policies, the International Refugee Organization’s actions, postwar reconstruction efforts led by …

Characteristics Of Dynamic Mode Ⅱ Fracture Of Frozen Saturated Sandstones Under Varying Low Temperatures And Loading Rates, Zhao Tao, Cui Zhao, Jia Hailiang, Yang Guangyu

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background Investigating the mode Ⅱ fracture of frozen saturated sandstones under dynamic disturbances, including changes in their critical stress intensity factor (SIF; i.e., fracture toughness) and energy dissipation mechanisms, is crucial for the safe excavation of frozen wellbores through drilling and blasting in coal mines. Methods Using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB), this study conducted experiments on the dynamic mode Ⅱ fracture of a sandstone specimen using the short core in compression (SCC) method (also referred to as dynamic SCC experiments) under varying temperatures and loading rates. Accordingly, this study analyzed the SIF versus time curves of the frozen …

Memory Stewardship: Preventing Confabulation In Child Victim Statements, Dixie Blair Ivey Apr 2025

Memory Stewardship: Preventing Confabulation In Child Victim Statements, Dixie Blair Ivey

Master of Arts in Human Services

Confabulation consists of a false memory report. Some scholars consider confabulation a clinical symptom of a neurological disorder. Others view the subject more broadly. Regardless of the boundaries of the definition, confabulation is an example of false memory. False memory reports can occur under many circumstances. The details of these circumstances, as well as the general cognitive processes that dictate memory, are important to understand, particularly to those who rely on memory for the purposes of forensic investigations. In order to use memory statements to reliable effect, the investigator or interviewer must understand how their own actions, the actions of …

From Prison To Community: Challenges Of Recidivism In The United States, Kellie R. Parks

Master of Arts in Human Services

Recidivism among adult females in the United States is often an overlooked and under analyzed aspect of the justice system. Women criminals encounter unique challenges and often need distinct rehabilitative needs while incarcerated and following release. This paper explores the many factors contributing to recidivism in adult females including mental health challenges, biological, neurologic and social factors. It provides insight into how lower recidivism rates can be achieved by adapting other reform measures such as education programs.

Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura In Pediatric Patients, Niki Shrestha, Robert W. Maitta Apr 2025

Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura In Pediatric Patients, Niki Shrestha, Robert W. Maitta

Faculty Scholarship

Thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura is a serious disease that can involve complex symptomatology, prolonged hospitalization, and a high risk of mortality if treatment is delayed. This disease is rare, but it is even rarer among pediatric patients. Even though it was first described 100 years ago, the earliest documented case was a pediatric patient. The last three decades have seen the discovery of the pathological mechanisms responsible for its clinical presentation. Symptoms/signs characteristic of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia with significant thrombocytopenia characterize the vast majority of patients. Its pathology centers on the accumulation of ultra-large von Willebrand factor multimers due to an …

Capturing Interfacial Phase Change And Flow Physics During Vertical Downflow Condensation, Thanh Hoang Phan, Cho Ning Huang, Chirag R. Kharangate Apr 2025

Capturing Interfacial Phase Change And Flow Physics During Vertical Downflow Condensation, Thanh Hoang Phan, Cho Ning Huang, Chirag R. Kharangate

Faculty Scholarship

Two-phase configurations can address the urgent demand for effective heat dissipation solutions in Naval power and energy systems. A better understanding of thermal transport processes in phase-change flows is critical for developing novel two-phase design tools for naval scientists and engineers. This study investigates interfacial phase change and flow dynamics during condensation flow through numerical simulations. An enhanced phase change model, incorporating a mass transfer intensity coefficient dependent on condensation film thickness, is implemented for vertical downflow condensation. A two-dimensional homogeneous two-phase Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes model, coupled with the Shear-Stress Transport k-ω turbulence model, is employed. The developed solver is thoroughly …
