Blues On The Record Player: A Photographic And Written Exploration Of The Permutations And Manifestations Of Sexuality And Religion In America’S Musical Roots, Coldwell Daniel Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation explores the intersection of sexuality and religion within blues culture through an interdisciplinary approach combining photography, creative writing, historical and sociological review and cultural critique. The work examines how the "tension of opposites" between erotic expression and spiritual yearning creates a transcendent aesthetic experience that defines American blues music and culture. Through self-critique of original photography exhibited in "Blues Plays the White Boy," the author documents the visual manifestations of blues feeling across the Mississippi Delta, Memphis, and Texas, revealing how physical landscapes and cultural artifacts embody blues sensibilities. The theoretical framework draws from Jungian psychology, signifying theory, …

Holla Back: The African American Rhetorical Tradition Of Call And Response And The Montgomery Riverfront Brawl, Solomon Cochren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Call and Response is a common production and performance within the African/African American community. Traditionally, it has been synonymous with African/African American preaching/oratory and African/African American music (spirituals, blues, gospel, jazz, soul, and rap). When the discourse of Call and Response is engaged often, it is regulated to these two major contexts. Unfortunately, this is a common and unostentatious understanding of Call and Response in the primary sectors of the African/African American (A/AA) community. The discourse of Call and Response outside of preaching and music within the densely populated African and African American life provides limited discourse of conceptualization and …

Parents’ Risk And Protective Factors Within Immigrant Preschool Families: The Role Of Parental Experiences On Youth Socioemotional Development, Sara Gilchrist

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

While adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been extensively studied, research on positive childhood experiences (PCEs) is emerging, particularly in the context of immigrant families. This study examines the socioemotional adjustment of low-income preschoolers. We hypothesize that preschoolers’ well-being is positively associated with protective factors and negatively related to risk factors, with stronger associations among immigrant families. Preliminary findings indicate significant correlations between parents’ PCEs and preschoolers’ socioemotional competencies. Acculturation stress and negative caregiving were associated with preschoolers’ reduced well-being. Research suggests that parents’ past experiences influence socioemotional development. PCEs appear to be a protective factor for both parents and children.

Insights Into Cortical Organization And Executive Dysfunction In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Madeleine Reading

Theses and Dissertations

Cortical gyrification is essential for cognitive development, yet its relationship with executive functioning (EF) in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains unclear. This study examined whether children with TBI exhibit atypical cortical folding in EF-related regions and whether these differences relate to EF performance. Using FreeSurfer 7.1.1, we analyzed local gyrification index (LGI) in 206 participants (ages 5-18) from 14 sites within the ENIGMA Pediatric msTBI Working Group. Vertex-wise regression revealed that longer time since injury (TSI) was associated with increased gyrification in the right fusiform gyrus and multiple left-hemisphere regions, suggesting region-specific neuroplasticity. Contrary to expectations, higher GCS scores …

Nationwide injunctions are constitutional. Their core feature—courts’ power to render decisions that directly benefit nonparties—is consistent with traditional equitable practices. Accordingly, the Article III “judicial power” comprehends such remedies. Nationwide injunctions also comport with Article III’s case-or-controversy requirement, including constitutional standing.

Broad remedies are sometimes necessary, especially when government actors willfully disregard people’s rights, and the usual tools of aggregate litigation (such as class actions) are not practically available to vindicate those rights. Moreover, courts can readily navigate prudential concerns about nationwide injunctions, from fears of judge shopping to prematurely freezing the law. Courts remain attuned to these concerns, and …
