Bile Acid And Microbiome Interactions In The Developing Child, Mary Elizabeth M Tessier, Benjamin L Shneider, Joseph F Petrosino, Geoffrey A Preidis

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Interactions between the gut microbiome and bile acids are complex and are linked to outcomes in pediatric liver disease by mechanisms that are incompletely understood. In adults, primary bile acids are synthesized in the liver and secreted into the intestine, where complex communities of gut microbes deconjugate, oxidize, epimerize, and 7α-dehydroxylate bile acids into a diverse array of unconjugated, secondary, allo-, iso-, and oxo-bile acids. In contrast, the infant gut microbiota contains a simple, Bifidobacterium-dominant community that transitions to a more diverse, adult-like community as additional microbes colonize the gut. This microbial succession gradually confers deconjugation, oxidation, epimerization, and 7α-dehydroxylation …

Temporal Dynamics Of Bmp/Nodal Ratio Drive Tissue-Specific Gastrulation Morphogenesis, Alyssa A Emig, Megan Hansen, Sandra Grimm, Cristian Coarfa, Nathan D Lord, Margot Kossmann Williams

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Anteroposterior elongation of the vertebrate body plan is driven by convergence and extension (C&E) gastrulation movements in both the mesoderm and neuroectoderm, but how or whether molecular regulation of C&E differs between tissues remains an open question. Using a zebrafish explant model of anteroposterior axis extension, we show that C&E of the neuroectoderm and mesoderm can be uncoupled ex vivo, and that morphogenesis of individual tissues results from distinct morphogen signaling dynamics. Using precise temporal manipulation of BMP and Nodal signaling, we identify a critical developmental window during which high or low BMP/Nodal ratios induce neuroectoderm- or mesoderm-driven C&E, respectively. …

Yield And Economics Following 5 Years Of Integrated Weed Management In Cotton, Amar Godar, Jason K. Norseworthy, L. Tom Barber, Roger Farr, Ty Smith

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The implementation of integrated weed management (IWM) practices in conventional management systems involves additional costs and can influence both short-term and long-term cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yields, ultimately affecting economic viability. This study, conducted from fall 2018 to fall 2023 near Marianna, AR, evaluated four IWM practices in a large-plot, fixed-plot factorial design: zero tolerance for weed seed rain, soil inversion deep tillage every third year in the fall, a preplant terminated cereal rye cover crop, and dicamba-resistant cotton technology. Long-term economic impacts were assessed using the 5-year average cost-adjusted yield, with the base program (excluding all IWM practices) serving …

Ic Writing Center Expansion Proposal, Norah Al-Hallaj, Olivia Beben, Faadil Syed, Guillermo Ordonez

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The Writing Center is an incredible asset to Loyola students, aiding with a wide range of writing issues across many subjects. However, its current layout falls short of optimizing student and tutor success. Its main problem is the consistent impact of outside noise-disrupting sessions. We propose to fill the gaps between the ceiling and the walls in the rooms used by the Writing Center. By making this practical change, the Writing Center can better support its students and tutors, improving the overall satisfaction of the program in the future.

Caregivers’ Verbal And Nonverbal Input On Spanish-English Bilingual Children’S Word Learning, Nikki Tsolakidis, Anmol Patel

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

We examined the relation of caregivers’ verbal and nonverbal input on bilingual children’s word learning. 45 caregiver-child dyads (Female=17) were video-recorded (75-minutes). At child-age 18-months (M=18.68; SD=1.12), caregivers’ non-verbal input was coded as communicative hand/head movements (gestures). Caregivers’ verbal input was words used and verbal responses to children’s gestures. At child-age 24-months (M=36.90; SD=0.66), word learning was calculated as words produced (video-recorded, caregiver report). Analyses showed caregivers’ nonverbal input was related to children’s Spanish words (p < 0.05). On-going analyses examine the relation of caregivers’ verbal input on children’s words.
