Unemployed Negativity: Fragments On Philosophy, Politics, And Culture, Jason Read Phd
Unemployed Negativity: Fragments On Philosophy, Politics, And Culture, Jason Read Phd
Faculty, Staff, and Alumni Books
Unemployed Negativity is a blog kept by Jason Read for over eighteen years. During that time, it has been a reflection on everything from the films of Jordan Peele to the relevance of Marxist criticism for contemporary society. It has reflected on such cultural transformations as the lasting legacy of Shark Week to the rise of conspiracy theories in contemporary politics. In doing so it has persisted in one central aim, to make philosophy a living reflection on the present rather than a contemplation of the past. This is a collection of its best posts, revised and expanded for publication.
A Slight Pinch, Carling Mcquinn
A Slight Pinch, Carling Mcquinn
English Honors Projects
This project is a short story collection featuring four independent stories that each explore what it means to embrace the chaotic independence of adulthood and to confront, often for the first time, an inescapable sense of self-awareness. The first story, “Ghost Town,” follows a 19-year-old ghost confined to the Airbnb where she died, forced to face the self-destructive behavior that led to her death. Next, “Camilla” depicts the volatile friendship of college student Lexi and her best friend Camilla as it forms, shifts, and inevitably implodes as the years pass. The third piece, “A Slight Pinch,” explores the complexities of …
Grief Is Isolating. The Elegy Is Not: An Exploration Of Loss And Grief In Poems, Jennifer Terry
Grief Is Isolating. The Elegy Is Not: An Exploration Of Loss And Grief In Poems, Jennifer Terry
All Theses
Grief is a messy, complicated process, one that can be all-consuming and isolating after a loss. Victoria Chang’s poetry in Obit and Ada Limón’s Bright Dead Things both explore loss and grief by using forms and free verse to characterize the stakes that come with a loved one’s decline and the aftermath of death. Michelle Zauner’s memoir, Crying in H Mart does similar work through the use of poetic elements in the memoir form. In my collection, Elegies of Home, I encounter the same struggles like the loss of identity, loss of a parent, and use the elegy as …
Personalizing Intermittent Fasting: The Role Of Microbiome Diversity And Fiber Intake In Shaping Health Outcomes, Jana Gjini, Robin Moore, Venkateswar Venkataraman
Personalizing Intermittent Fasting: The Role Of Microbiome Diversity And Fiber Intake In Shaping Health Outcomes, Jana Gjini, Robin Moore, Venkateswar Venkataraman
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
BACKGROUND: Intermittent fasting (IF) has been linked to improved metabolic health, reduced inflammation, and increased longevity in animal models. These effects are thought to be mediated through changes in the gut microbiome. Murine studies consistently show that IF enhances microbial diversity and promotes beneficial species like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, improving metabolic profiles and gut barrier function. However, human studies reveal inconsistent results, suggesting that individual-level factors such as baseline microbiome composition and fiber intake may influence response to IF.
HYPOTHESIS: Baseline gut microbiome diversity and habitual dietary fiber intake modulate the metabolic and inflammatory benefits of intermittent fasting in humans. …
Synthetic Dataset Generator To Assist In Training Of Multilayer Perceptron Based Neural Network, Megan Leach
Synthetic Dataset Generator To Assist In Training Of Multilayer Perceptron Based Neural Network, Megan Leach
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Synthetic dataset generation attempts to solve the issue of needing large datasets to train models and observe behaviors in both a cost and time effective way. This project aims to highlight the value of synthetic data creation and how it was useful when training a neural network model by creating a synthetic dataset generator for a specific model in order to evaluate its behavior in difference scenarios. The model that was used in this project was created to select high-quality papers while maximizing the diversity of authors based on race, gender, and country characteristics, essentially mimicking a review process. The …
Investigation And Characterization Of Silicon Carbide Power Mosfets, Vincent Hassman
Investigation And Characterization Of Silicon Carbide Power Mosfets, Vincent Hassman
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
As engineers constantly seek to make solar power systems smaller, cheaper, and more efficient, technological enhancements in the electronics that run them are required. One of the most fundamental electronic components of any solar system is the inverter, which takes DC current from the solar cell and turns it into AC current that is supported by the grid. This is done with metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). Through more advanced MOSFET technology, inverters can switch at a higher frequency, increasing efficiency and reducing size and cost.
MOSFET performance can be enhanced by swapping the traditional silicon substrate with …
Exploring The Impact Of Inclusive Education Knowledge On School Administrators' Attitudes: A Quantitative Analysis Of Influencing Factors And Leadership Preparedness, Michelle Everitt
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Federal laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) establish the legal foundation for inclusive education and mandate that students with disabilities (SWD) receive access to education in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). To achieve the high-stakes accountability standards of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), schools are also responsible for ensuring academic progress for all students, including those with disabilities. However, simply complying with these policies does not guarantee meaningful participation for SWD. School administrators play a central role in advancing inclusive education, yet …
Pláticas, Reflexiones, Y Resistencia: Exploring How First-Generation Latino Males Leverage Community Cultural Wealth In Education-Based Doctoral Programs, Daniel Noriega
Education (PhD) Dissertations
The Latino/a community is the largest ethnic minority group in the United States and continues to grow. Although enrollment in higher education is on the rise, Latino/a students complete their degrees at lower rates than their white counterparts. This disparity is further magnified when accounting for gender, with Latina women outpacing Latino men at every educational milestone. Disparities in doctorate attainment lead to the underrepresentation of Latino men in student support or leadership positions, which may negatively impact the success of Latino students. This qualitative study examines how First-Generation Latino males leverage Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) to navigate systemic barriers …
The Effectiveness Of Science Instruction With Digital Simulations In Elementary Settings For Quantitative Sensemaking, Joelle Prate
The Effectiveness Of Science Instruction With Digital Simulations In Elementary Settings For Quantitative Sensemaking, Joelle Prate
Education (PhD) Dissertations
The importance of elementary science education is well-documented, but many challenges persist, including a lack of time, space, and materials needed for students to have hands-on lab experiences. As a result, many students in California are falling behind, with less than one-third of all fifth graders meeting or exceeding standards in standardized test reporting. This study sought to employ single-case design methods and combine the best practices in sensemaking approaches with virtual simulations to determine whether these practices would provide effective intervention and improve students’ blended math and science sensemaking abilities at the qualitative and quantitative levels, as well as …
“More Than What [They] Made Us To Be”: From Passing To Perception In Victorian And Modern Vampire Media, Lauren Sieberg
“More Than What [They] Made Us To Be”: From Passing To Perception In Victorian And Modern Vampire Media, Lauren Sieberg
English (MA) Theses
Throughout Victorian Gothic horror fiction, vampires function as deviant figures, maneuvering within social confines of passing until their status quo-threatening identity is exposed. Of the popular vampires from this period, most gradually fail to maintain status as social insiders—as demonstrated with Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula or Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, who possess the temporary capacity to pass until their hidden monstrosity is revealed over time. Even if Gothic monsters are confined to a limited space and time far from society, this is still not enough; in accordance with the Victorian culture of morality policing by dominant groups, the vampiric Other …
Exploring Antimicrobial Performance And Compostability Of A Pectin-Based Film, Jessica Hardiman
Exploring Antimicrobial Performance And Compostability Of A Pectin-Based Film, Jessica Hardiman
All Theses
Packaging is considered one of the most important parts of the food supply chain. Packaging affects many aspects of the food product, such as acceptability, safety, nutritional quality, and it also provides a means of communication with the consumer. Although many people are aware of the great benefits packaging provides to the food sector, fewer think about the repercussions that occur from the waste that is generated from packaging, or the waste from the food inside the package. There is little research done on the development of compostable and antimicrobial packaging, which could reduce plastic and improve food safety. In …

The Benefits Of A Multi-Framework Approach To Social Movement Scholarship, Ananya Bhamadipati Rao
The Benefits Of A Multi-Framework Approach To Social Movement Scholarship, Ananya Bhamadipati Rao
Standard Theses
There are many different social movement frameworks and approaches used to not only analyze social movements' outcomes but also to account for why they begin and what accounts for them. But in the development of social movement scholarship over the past decades, there has been a tendency in social movement scholarship to advance by rejecting or invalidating previous frameworks. This has left scholars of social movements with unnecessarily myopic approaches over the years. More recent approaches, often in conversation with Global South scholars, have produced more holistic and integrated studies. My thesis joins this field of scholarship. I ask What …
Diversity-Augmented Training For Generalizable Ai Agents, Wenjun Li
Diversity-Augmented Training For Generalizable Ai Agents, Wenjun Li
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) has achieved remarkable success over the past decade, from superhuman performance in video games to real-world applications like robotics. However, RL models often lack generalization, making them unreliable when deployed in unfamiliar scenarios. For example, robots must adapt to varying terrains with different slopes and obstacles, yet standard RL training does not explicitly promote such adaptability. While various methods have been proposed to enhance RL robustness, achieving reliable generalization remains an open challenge.
This dissertation focuses on improving the generalization capability of agents in three major settings: infinite horizon RL agents, finite horizon RL agents, and …
To Mitigate Or Adapt? A Construal Level Perspective On Agenda Setting For Climate Action, Shu Tian Ng
To Mitigate Or Adapt? A Construal Level Perspective On Agenda Setting For Climate Action, Shu Tian Ng
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a present crisis—making the question of how we act timelier than whether we act. This research investigates how people evaluate different approaches to climate action—specifically, mitigation (reducing emissions) and adaptation (coping with impacts)—through the lens of the Construal Level Theory (Liberman & Trope, 1998; Trope & Liberman, 2010). Across three studies, I examined how perceptions of desirability and feasibility influence preferences for different climate action strategies. Study 1 found that, to laypeople, mitigation was perceived as more desirable while adaptation was perceived as more feasible. Study 2 attempted to manipulate individuals’ …
Improvement Of Hanford Waste Vitrification Algorithms With Machine Learning, Uncertainty Quantification, And Gradient-Based Optimization, Lagrande L. Gunnell
Improvement Of Hanford Waste Vitrification Algorithms With Machine Learning, Uncertainty Quantification, And Gradient-Based Optimization, Lagrande L. Gunnell
Theses and Dissertations
Over 200 million liters of nuclear waste is stored in tank farms in Hanford, Washington, USA. An ongoing effort to immobilize non-solid nuclear waste is through waste vitrification, where waste is mixed and melted with glass-forming chemicals (GFCs) to form a waste glass. Algorithms to determine the ideal mixing recipes are formalized as constrained optimization problems to maximize waste loading in the glass product, with constraints on several properties of the glass melt and final product. These properties are on the glass melt, such as viscosity, electrical conductivity, and corrosion rates, as well as the final glass product, such as …

Curated: The Impact Of Architectural Sequence On The Journey Through The Art Museum, Zairis Padilla
Curated: The Impact Of Architectural Sequence On The Journey Through The Art Museum, Zairis Padilla
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
The museum is a culturally significant institution used for learning, thought, and contemplation from its conceptualization in The Enlightenment Movement of the 17th century. The art museum has the potential to create a powerful relationship between the art and the architecture that houses it. The architecture of an art museum becomes a critical participant in the experience of art and affects the spaces in a dramatic way. If the art or architecture overpowers the other, the user experience is impacted; therefore, the connection created between the two within the museum is one of great importance. When a symbiotic connection, or …

The Inequitable Impacts Of Sea Level Rise: How East Palo Alto Serves As Both A Warning And Beacon Of Hope For Coastal Communities, Justin Capone
The Inequitable Impacts Of Sea Level Rise: How East Palo Alto Serves As Both A Warning And Beacon Of Hope For Coastal Communities, Justin Capone
UC Law Environmental Journal
As sea level rise and coastal flooding continue to threaten communities globally, the impacts on shoreline residents will not be distributed equally. Projections of physical damage do not account for other environmental and socioeconomic contexts that overlap to disproportionately burden the most vulnerable communities. East Palo Alto, a city that regularly suffers from destructive flooding, is at high monetary and social risk from sea level rise due to a history of racially discriminatory practices that contributed to residents’ current socioeconomic disadvantage. This inequity poses a distinct environmental justice issue, requiring adaptation strategies that place the city’s environmental burden within past …
Bans Against Book Bans: State Legislation Fighting Against Censorship, Marissa Muraoka
Bans Against Book Bans: State Legislation Fighting Against Censorship, Marissa Muraoka
Book Publishing Final Research Papers
This research evaluates three of the eight states that passed legislation in 2023 and 2024 to limit the ability to ban books in their states. Using three states as case studies and analyzing the bill documents and news articles covering the legislation, I evaluated the conversations occurring in our local governments about book banning in the US. While many of these bills argue that book bans should not exist solely based on “partisan or doctrinal beliefs,” the issue is intrinsically tied to those beliefs. Democrats struggle to protect diverse voices of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities; Republicans fight to remove sexually …

East Tennessee General And Special Education High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Co-Teaching In Core Academic Classrooms, Michael A. Sanders
East Tennessee General And Special Education High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Co-Teaching In Core Academic Classrooms, Michael A. Sanders
Ed.D. Dissertations
In April 2023, Tennessee legislators implemented rigorous graduation requirements for all students, disabled and non-disabled, including Algebra II and Chemistry or Physics. The legislators created angst among school leaders and educators across the state due to the more rigorous graduation requirements and the lack of qualified math, science, and special education teachers to help meet those new requirements. I found a lack of research on guidance for educators in how to address the changing of Tennessee’s high school graduation requirements in 2023. I also found a lack of research on how to better instruct special education and general education high …

Pre-Kindergarten Teachers' Perceptions Of Teaching Early Literacy Skills Incorporating The Science Of Reading, Sarah Dunn Cheek
Ed.D. Dissertations
Since every student has the right to receive a high-quality education that fosters reading proficiency, researchers have conducted considerable research on the most effective ways to teach students to read for many years. Researchers highlighted the importance of literacy instruction based on the science of reading. Still, there was a gap in the research on this type of instruction in pre-kindergarten classrooms. The purpose of my qualitative, interpretive study was to explore East Tennessee pre-kindergarten teachers’ perceptions of their abilities to implement science of reading-based literacy instruction and how these teachers were implementing this instruction in their classrooms. After collecting …
Let’S Tell Them: The Importance Of Christian Storytelling To The Secular Mind, Tiago Rossendy
Let’S Tell Them: The Importance Of Christian Storytelling To The Secular Mind, Tiago Rossendy
Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries
Christian storytelling is pivotal in shaping individual perspectives and nurturing a biblical worldview, particularly among the younger generation. Sharing personal and biblical narratives can bridge the gap between secular minds and faith. There is a need to convey to the new generation the deeds of the Lord, what He has done for His people, and how He continues to work in our lives. Providing an overview of these experiences through storytelling has the power to capture the attention and interest of the secular mind, leading them towards eternal truths. In this process, a person committed to God must be the …
The Impact Of Public Health Authority On Emergency Response In State Health Departments, Jessica L. Baggett
The Impact Of Public Health Authority On Emergency Response In State Health Departments, Jessica L. Baggett
Dissertations: Doctor of Public Health
Background
Public health authority plays a crucial role in enabling state health officials to implement emergency response measures such as isolation, quarantine, and vaccination campaigns. However, legislative changes following the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly curtailed these authorities in many states, raising concerns about the ability of public health officials to respond effectively to future health crises. The erosion of public health authority has highlighted gaps in the legal literacy of health officials and underscored the need for enhanced training in navigating political and legal challenges.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to assess legal literacy among state health officials, …

Cannibalism, Consumerism, Colonialism And Love In Contemporary Western Media, Jules Perez
RhetTech
This paper examines the role of the cannibal in contemporary western media by examining the novel Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, the short story Meat by Mariana Enriquez, and the movie Bones and All starring Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell. By analyzing these pieces of media, one can see the ways in which cannibalism as a literary device acts as a method of reflection and disarmament to prominent western philosophies surrounding ideas of consumerism, colonialism and love.
