The therapeutic landscape in ALL has changed dramatically over the last decade. Allogeneic blood or marrow transplantation (AlloBMT) has also evolved and remains an important option for consolidation. We assessed the interplay between these factors by analyzing the outcomes of 251 adult ALL (214 B and 37 T ALL) patients undergoing alloBMT with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) across two eras: 2008-2014 (ERA1) and 2015-2022 (ERA2). ERA1 patients were younger (median age 45.5 vs. 50, p=0.03), less likely to have an HCT-CI ≥4 (9% vs. 21%, p=0.01), more likely to have MRD by flow cytometry (20% vs. 9%, p=0.01) and receive myeloablative …

Development Of A Risk Score To Aid With The Diagnosis Of Infections After Spinal Cord Injury: Protocol For A Retrospective Cohort Study, Felicia Skelton, Larissa Grigoryan, Joann Pan, Ashley Collazo, Barbara Trautner

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) who develop urinary tract infection (UTI) present differently than the non-SCI population. UTIs can cause loss of quality of life and even lead to life-threatening complications including urosepsis. Challenges in SCI management include distinguishing symptomatic UTI from asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB), which occurs often in patients with SCI, and the lack of standardization in UTI diagnosis in SCI.

Objective: This study aims to set the foundation for the development of a risk score to improve diagnostic accuracy of UTI after SCI.

Methods: This study will use data from the Veterans Health Administration Corporate Data …

"Significant Bodily Intrusions": Investigations Into Law Enforcement Phlebotomy, Anne Kathleen Johnson May 2025

"Significant Bodily Intrusions": Investigations Into Law Enforcement Phlebotomy, Anne Kathleen Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

This three-paper dissertation explores law enforcement phlebotomy, the ability of law enforcement officers to draw blood. Phlebotomy is both a ubiquitous, invasive diagnostic tool as well as a social site with complex relational dynamics at play between phlebotomist and patient. Through law enforcement phlebotomy, the blood draw is co-opted from the medical field into the policing field, and the normative framework through which it is used changes: whereas medical edicts instruct providers to work with patients through an ethics of care--respecting consent and refusal--policing is not similarly bound, instead operating through a prioritization of security and efficiency. In the articles …

Magma Evolution And Eruptive History Of Three Fingered Jack: A Mafic Composite Volcano In The Central High Cascades Of Oregon, Javaria Aziz May 2025

Magma Evolution And Eruptive History Of Three Fingered Jack: A Mafic Composite Volcano In The Central High Cascades Of Oregon, Javaria Aziz

Dissertations and Theses

The central High Cascades graben in Oregon has been a center for mafic volcanism since its initiation. Three Fingered Jack is one of the larger mafic composite cones in the graben, located 20km south of Mount Jefferson. Three Fingered Jack erupted between 142.1 - 150.8ka, based on Ar40/Ar39 age dates. This study provides stratigraphic, compositional and petrographic evidence to understand the eruptive history of Three Fingered Jack and the processes involved in generating compositionally diverse basaltic andesites here.

The basaltic andesites of Three Fingered Jack show three compositional trends of magma evolution: 1) enrichment, 2) depletion and …

Sirt6 Deficiency Promotes Senescence And Age-Associated Intervertebral Disc Degeneration In Mice, Pranay Ramteke, Bahiyah Watson, Mallory Toci, Victoria Tran, Shira N Johnston, Maria Tsingas, Ruteja Barve, Ramkrishna Mitra, Richard Loeser, John Collins, Makarand Risbud

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a major risk factor contributing to chronic low back and neck pain. While the etiological factors for disc degeneration vary, age is still one of the most important risk factors. Recent studies have shown the promising role of SIRT6 in mammalian aging and skeletal tissue health, however its role in the intervertebral disc health remains unexplored. We investigated the contribution of SIRT6 to disc health by studying the age-dependent spinal phenotype of mice with conditional deletion of Sirt6 in the disc (AcanCreERT2; Sirt6fl/fl). Histological studies showed a degenerative phenotype in knockout mice …

Increased Fatty Acid Delivery By Tumor Endothelium Promotes Metastatic Outgrowth, Deanna N Edwards, Shan Wang, Kelby Kane, Wenqiang Song, Laura C Kim, Verra M Ngwa, Yoonha Hwang, Kevin Ess, Mark R Boothby, Jin Chen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Metastatic outgrowth in distant microscopic niches requires sufficient nutrients, including fatty acids (FAs), to support tumor growth and to generate an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). However, despite the important role of FAs in metastasis, the regulation of FA supply in metastatic niches has not been defined. In this report, we show that tumor endothelium actively promotes outgrowth and restricts antitumor cytolysis by transferring FAs into developing metastatic tumors. We describe a process of transendothelial FA delivery via endosomes that requires mTORC1 activity. Thus, endothelial cell-specific targeted deletion of Raptor (RptorECKO), a unique component of the mTORC1 complex, significantly reduced metastatic …

Recent Trends In Medical Education To Sustain An Effective Practice - A Systematic Review, Sharon Pricilla Jeevan Kumar Leela Ms., Amtuz Zehra Dr, Ayesha Siddiqhha Mukthar Ms

International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences

Learning processes in medical practices in medicinal schools put more emphasis on the hard sciences than they do on developing soft skills like empathy and communication. For this reason, the medical humanities emerged to provide a "different" take on the creative process. Medical ethics, the doctor-patient relationship, clinical research, mental illness, and professionalism are just a few of the topics that have been utilized to discuss in medical school. A strong connection between classroom learning and clinical experience is crucial for medical school graduates. Students graduating from a medical program are expected to have experience with patient care, clinical procedures, …

Beaulieu V. Beaulieu: An Obituary For Lex Loci And An Approach To Interest Analysis, David C. Shonka

Maine Law Review

Clifford Beaulieu, a guest in his father's automobile, was injured when the vehicle struck a telephone pole in Massachusetts. Both parties were residents of Maine. The trip had originated in Maine and was to terminate there. The son filed an action against his father in the Maine Superior Court, alleging negligent operation of the vehicle. On an agreed statement of facts, the case was reported to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court where the defendant argued for dismissal of the action on the grounds that the doctrine of lex loci delictus, the law of the place of the tort, was applicable …

Conservation, Policy And The Role Of Counsel, David J. Halperin May 2025

Conservation, Policy And The Role Of Counsel, David J. Halperin

Maine Law Review

The conservation interests in the State of Maine have been roused to a furor by the decision of Maine's highest court in State v. Johnson. The case, in substance, holds that Maine's Wetlands Act is unconstitutional when applied to prohibit the filling of a specific segment of salt water marsh. While both the decision and the underlying statute are of considerable substantive interest, the case deserves particular study for the light it sheds on the role of counsel in helping the legal process accommodate new policy concerns. A note of caution must, of course, be sounded before seeking to generalize …

De Novo Juries, Misdemeanor Counsel, And Other Problems: Changes Ahead For The Maine District Courts?, Pierce B. Hasler May 2025

De Novo Juries, Misdemeanor Counsel, And Other Problems: Changes Ahead For The Maine District Courts?, Pierce B. Hasler

Maine Law Review

The Maine judicial system has two levels of criminal courts, the superior court having exclusive trial jurisdiction over felony prosecutions and the district court operating with concurrent trial jurisdiction for misdemeanors. The district court also processes the preliminary phases of felony cases; included in this function are bail hearings, initial appearances (arraignments), and preliminary hearings. To provide jury trials in misdemeanor prosecutions state law permits all district court convictions to be appealed to the superior court for trial de novo to a jury. The accepted reason for unlimited de novo trials is that the state constitution requires a jury in …

The Constitutional Law Of Remedies In Welfare Litigation, Donald F. Fontaine May 2025

The Constitutional Law Of Remedies In Welfare Litigation, Donald F. Fontaine

Maine Law Review

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the problems of poor people in the United States are dependent, more than those of other classes, upon the proper administration of government agencies. The contact of poor people with government agencies involves most of their chief concerns in life: Welfare, social security, adequate health care, adequate income from work, a safe and healthy place to live, whether privately or publicly owned, and schools that provide real education without racial or economic discrimination. Where payments are improperly withheld from a presumably destitute recipient, the need for a speedy and adequate remedy should be obvious. …

The Development Of Admiralty Jurisdiction And Practice Since 1800, David P. Dawson

Maine Law Review

This book undertakes several tasks. It contains a detailed narrative of the ebb and flow of the admiralty jurisdiction exercised by the English Admiralty Courts from earliest times to the present, together with a look at the practice during each period. Unlike our Admiralty jurisdiction which rests on the Constitution and has grown steadily through court interpretation, the jurisdiction of the English Admiralty Court has expanded and contracted with frequent and varying statutory changes.

Preliminary Questions Of Fact: Respective Roles Of Judge And Jury In Maine Courts, Maine Law Review May 2025

Preliminary Questions Of Fact: Respective Roles Of Judge And Jury In Maine Courts, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

Virtually indisputable in the law is the notion that the trial judge determines questions of admissibility of evidence. However, when admissibility depends upon the evaluation of a preliminary question of fact, both courts and commentators disagree as to whether the judge should continue to occupy the role of sole decision-maker. The intertwining of fact, the preliminary condition, and law, the admissibility decision, raises some havoc with accepted views of the judge as arbiter of the law and the jury as fact finder. If the judge determines both questions, he is resolving not only legal, but also factual issues traditionally within …

Comparative Negligence And Comparative Contribution In Maine: The Need For Guidelines, Maine Law Review May 2025

Comparative Negligence And Comparative Contribution In Maine: The Need For Guidelines, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

In the recent case of Packard v. Whitten, Maine became the second state to adopt the doctrine of comparative contribution among joint tortfeasors. The decision stressed the point that comparative contribution was merely a logical outgrowth of Maine's Comparative Negligence Statute and that, in particular, the 1969 amendment to that law "would appear to have little purpose except to lay the basis for a comparative contribution." The court concluded that the implementation of this new doctrine would pose no major problems: "More than five years' experience in apportioning causal fault under our Comparative Negligence Law convinces us that this change …

Arbitration As An Alternative To Judicial Settlement: Some Selected Perspectives, Mashall E. Lippman May 2025

Arbitration As An Alternative To Judicial Settlement: Some Selected Perspectives, Mashall E. Lippman

Maine Law Review

The increasing interest in arbitration as a means of judicial reform has been largely due to the fact that arbitration provides a forum for dispute settlement apart from the traditional judicial system. In other words, arbitration is regarded as a useful reform measure primarily because it affords potential litigants a forum other than the already over-burdened courts. Little consideration has been given to the possibility that in some areas arbitration may in fact be both a better forum and a better method of resolving disputes than the traditional judicial system. This article will discuss three areas, areas which are susceptible …
