Exploring Differences Between Mothers’ And Fathers’ Language Attitudes In Multilingual London, Anna Caunt, Caroline Floccia, Rana Abu-Zhaya

School of Psychology

This study investigated the language attitudes of parents raising multilingual infants in London. Using a newly developed questionnaire, 131 mothers and fathers rated their attitudes towards their languages across three themes: (1) their emotional resonance with the language, (2) the significance of the language in their personal life, and (3) its importance in bringing up a multilingual child. Parents varied in the combination of languages they reported speaking, and English, the society language, was either parents’ L1, L2 or L3. Our results showed that both mothers and fathers had similarly positive attitudes towards English, but differed in their attitudes towards …

Poetries Of Abandonment: A Study Of Plath And Glück, Yara Abdelmoneim May 2025

Poetries Of Abandonment: A Study Of Plath And Glück, Yara Abdelmoneim

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the intersection between literature and trauma, which can be discerned in the key works of two poets, Sylvia Plath and Louise Glück. While offering readings of crucial poems, the thesis also examines the interrelations among trauma, memory and narrative as theorized by two contemporary psychiatrists, Bessel van der Kolk and Judith Herman. Both Plath and Glück wrote about personal and generational trauma after going through different experiences of abandonment. Absence, indirection and repetition provide the basis for literary techniques that allow their traumas to be better understood by authors and readers alike. The degree to which each …

Corradjust Unveils Biologically Relevant Transcriptomic Correlations By Efficiently Eliminating Hidden Confounders, Stepan Nersisyan, Phillipe Loher, Isidore Rigoutsos

Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers

Correcting for confounding variables is often overlooked when computing RNA-RNA correlations, even though it can profoundly affect results. We introduce CorrAdjust, a method for identifying and correcting such hidden confounders. CorrAdjust selects a subset of principal components to residualize from expression data by maximizing the enrichment of "reference pairs" among highly correlated RNA-RNA pairs. Unlike traditional machine learning metrics, this novel enrichment-based metric is specifically designed to evaluate correlation data and provides valuable RNA-level interpretability. CorrAdjust outperforms current state-of-the-art methods when evaluated on 25 063 human RNA-seq datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas, the Genotype-Tissue Expression project, and the Geuvadis …

Increasing The Educational Attainment Of Youth In Extension Of Foster Care Through Positive Youth Development Centered Programming, Julia M. Rossmiller May 2025

Increasing The Educational Attainment Of Youth In Extension Of Foster Care Through Positive Youth Development Centered Programming, Julia M. Rossmiller

Senior Capstone Papers

Approximately 20,000 young adults age out of the foster care system in America each year. Of these 20,000 individuals, less than one-quarter will choose to participate in Extension of Foster Care services. Even fewer will complete a bachelor’s degree by age 26. Extension of Foster Care provides financial support for housing and education for young adults pursuing an education or working. However, most young adults have received little or no education on post-secondary options despite having the financial resources available for these programs. Low levels of protective factors further raise the barrier to entry for young adults to pursue an …

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown substantial benefit for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, resistance to ICIs remains a major clinical challenge. Here, we perform a comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of plasma proteomic profiles to explore the underlying biology of treatment resistance in NSCLC.

METHODS: The analysis was performed on 388 "resistance-associated proteins" (RAPs) that were previously described as pretreatment plasma proteomic predictors within the PROphet computational model designed to predict ICI clinical benefit in NSCLC. Putative tissue origins of the RAPs were explored using publicly available datasets. Enrichment analyses were performed to investigate RAP-related biological …

Essays In Empirical Asset Pricing, Jiaen Li

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation explores two broad questions. First, what is the role of intangible forces like ideological narratives in belief formation and asset prices? Second, how can we understand the systematic components in asset pricing? In Chapter 1, using cryptocurrencies as a laboratory, I examine the role of ideological narratives in asset prices—an area remains underexplored. Leveraging social media data and large language models to measure ideology dynamics, I find that fluctuations in two ideological narratives—anarchism and decentralization—are priced in the cross-section of cryptocurrency returns. Consistent with the view that factors proxy for state variables, ideology factors contain distinct information about …

Leveraging Ai For Marketing Decisions: Algorithmic Targeting And Healthcare Applications, Annie Shi

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for making effective marketing decisions, specifically on how to measure the causal effects of targeting promotions and detecting suspicious retail buyers of opioids. In the first chapter, we propose a novel approach in measuring the true causal effects of targeting promotions. Targeting promotions on online platforms are often determined by AI algorithms, which utilize extensive customer and seller information to generate various algorithmic scores for targeting. Effective targeting, however, will lead to selection bias when evaluating the causal effects of promotions. we analyzed 2,294 promotion experiments on a major online retail platform …

Essays In Corporate Governance And Financial Intermediation, Renping Li

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Antitrust regulations in banking have historically targeted commercial banking activities. In the first chapter, I ask does the consolidation of investment banks have competitive effects? Using the geographically fragmented municipal bond underwriting market as a natural laboratory and employing a stacked difference-in-differences specification, I find that the underwriting spread increases by 4.8% of its sample mean following within-market consolidation. The effects double for larger M&As or in more concentrated markets and do not dissipate over time. These M&As do not generate efficiency gains that manifest as lower bond yields or substitution of other issuer-paid services. The findings remain robust when …

The Impact Of Benefits Cliffs And Asset Limits On Low-Wage Workers: New Evidence From A Nationally Representative Survey, Stephen Roll, Selina Miller, Mathieu Despard

Center for Social Development Research

Over 40 million workers in the United States receive public benefits. Many face a challenge: They would like to earn higher wages, take on more hours, or accept better jobs, but doing so can push them over benefit-program limits, causing them to lose eligibility or experience reductions in the benefits they need to make ends meet. This is also an issue for employers, whose ability to attract and retain talent is affected when the workforce’s employment decisions are driven by concerns about public benefit eligibility. Drawing on data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey administered to a …

N 6-Methyladenosine (m6A), the most abundant modification in eukaryotic messenger RNAs (mRNAs), has also been found at a low level in bacterial mRNAs. However, enzyme(s) that introduce m6A modification on mRNAs in bacteria remain elusive. In this work, we combine deep-sequencing approaches that identify m6A sites with in vitro biochemical studies to identify putative m6A methyltransferases that would modify Escherichia coli mRNAs. We tested four uncharacterized candidates predicted to encode proteins with putative methyltransferase domains, whose deletion decreased the m6A level. However, in vitro analysis with the purified putative methyltransferases revealed that none of them installs m6A on mRNA. Exposure …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Biliary atresia (BA) is a pediatric liver disease that often necessitates parenteral nutrition (PN) to support growth due to impaired liver function. While soy-based lipid emulsions (SLE) are commonly used in PN, they may contribute to cholestatic liver injury. In contrast, mixed lipid emulsions (MLE) show promise in preventing cholestasis in infants without BA, potentially by restoring bile flow. However, their effectiveness in patients of complete bile duct obstruction, as seen in BA, remains uncertain. To explore the potential benefits of MLE in BA, we utilized a neonatal pig model of bile duct ligation (BDL). Pigs underwent either BDL or …

Kinases regulate cellular processes and are essential for understanding cellular function and disease. To investigate the regulatory state of a kinase, numerous methods have been developed to infer kinase activities from phosphoproteomics data using kinase-substrate libraries. However, few phosphorylation sites can be attributed to an upstream kinase in these libraries, limiting the scope of kinase activity inference. Moreover, inferred activities vary across methods, necessitating evaluation for accurate interpretation. Here, we present benchmarKIN, an R package enabling comprehensive evaluation of kinase activity inference methods. Alongside classical perturbation experiments, benchmarKIN introduces a tumor-based benchmarking approach utilizing multi-omics data to identify highly active …

Background: Only half of individuals with suspected rare diseases receive a genetic diagnosis following genomic testing. A genetic diagnosis allows access to appropriate care, restores reproductive confidence and reduces the number of potentially unnecessary interventions. A major barrier is the lack of disease agnostic functional tests suitable for implementation in routine diagnostics that can provide evidence supporting pathogenicity of novel variants, especially those refractory to RNA sequencing.

Methods: Focusing on mitochondrial disease, we describe an untargeted mass-spectrometry based proteomics pipeline that can quantify proteins encoded by > 50% of Mendelian disease genes and > 80% of known mitochondrial disease genes in clinically …

Early widowhood is characterized by chronic stress and is associated with a higher risk of incident depression and cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Peripheral inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder and atherothrombosis and may represent a common mechanism underlying widow(er)'s elevated risk for both health conditions. Chronic psychological stress sensitizes the release of proinflammatory cytokines during the peripheral stress response. The present study examined whether recent spousal bereavement enhances the inflammatory response to an acute, psychological stressor. Recently widowed older adults (n = 143) and non-widowed controls (n = 69) participated in a quasi-experimental study, during which …

Asbestosis is a prototypical type of fibrosis that is progressive and does not resolve. ER stress is increased in multiple cell types that contribute to fibrosis; however, the mechanism(s) by which ER stress in lung macrophages contributes to fibrosis is poorly understood. Here, we show that ER stress resulted in protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK; Eif2ak3) activation in humans with asbestosis. Similar results were seen in asbestos-injured mice. Mice harboring a conditional deletion of Eif2ak3 were protected from fibrosis. Lung macrophages from asbestosis individuals had evidence of metabolic reprogramming to fatty acid oxidation (FAO). Eif2ak3fl/fl mice had increased oxygen …

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 6: Issue 1, Article 6, 2025. Efforts to promote physical activity and other health-related behaviors are more effective when resource materials are understood by a wide and diverse audience. Before our lab’s previous investigations (Thomas et al., 2024), only one study seemed to use the cloze procedure to directly test the comprehension (i.e., readability) of physical activity promotion material (Cardinal & Seidler, 1995). Thus, this rapid literature review sought to (a) determine the extent the cloze procedure has been used to study physical activity promotion material comprehension in lay adults and (b) collate …
