Student engagement is a key predictor of academic achievement and is closely linked to career awareness, interest, and preparedness. Measuring student engagement during STEM learning is challenging for teachers, given the dynamic and ever-changing nature of these learning environments. Even when engagement data can be collected, leveraging this information to refine and personalise instruction requires significant experience and time. To address this, we are developing Scoutlier EngagEd, a digital teaching assistant that embeds in existing Learning Management Systems (LMS) to automatically and invisibly gather multidimensional data on student engagement and performance during STEM learning. These data are being leveraged to …

Toward A Politically Neutral Approach To K-12 Pedagogy, Cameron S. Kang, John M. Kang

Missouri Law Review

Professors Linda McClain and James Fleming have written an intellectually stimulating book manuscript, “What Shall Be Orthodox” in Polarized Times? It is a privilege to have been afforded access to an early iteration of the book and an opportunity to share our thoughts about it. We (with “we” and its related “our” and “us” denoting Cameron and John) were inspired by Professors McClain and Fleming to reflect about the relationship between pedagogy and the Constitution.

Despite making up the largest demographic group at Solaris High School in Northern California, Latinx students are significantly underrepresented in advanced science courses. Using a pláticas methodology grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT), Latinx Critical Race Theory (LatCrit), and Community Cultural Wealth (CCW), this study centers student voice to understand how systemic problems, such as tracking and deficit thinking, impact students’ access to and navigation of rigorous science classes. The study includes individual and …

From Geometric Intuition To Arithmetical Rigor: Teaching Analysis With Bolzano’S Original Text, Anne Duffee Jun 2025

From Geometric Intuition To Arithmetical Rigor: Teaching Analysis With Bolzano’S Original Text, Anne Duffee

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper I argue for the value of reading primary historical texts in mathematics courses. In particular, I show how close readings of Bolzano’s 1817 paper on the Intermediate Value Theorem in an introductory analysis course helps students understand the working use of fundamental analytic concepts and problems. I further argue that the philosophical purpose of reading primary texts is the “desedimentation” of knowledge, a process through which students come to understand the origins of mathematical concepts as solutions to historical problems.

In this article, the authors share examples of this from their own teaching and conclude with a call to action so that this benefit, perhaps unique to PSPs, may be more fully explored and utilized to the benefit of our students.

The Figurate Numbers: From Verbal Expression To Algebraic Symbolism, Jerry Lodder Jun 2025

The Figurate Numbers: From Verbal Expression To Algebraic Symbolism, Jerry Lodder

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We study the historical development of the figurate numbers, from ancient Greece through Pierre de Fermat to the work of Blaise Pascal, examining key passages for the construction and computation of the figurate numbers as well as their use in enumerating combinations. To assist in a transition to algebraic equivalents of these verbal passages, we introduce tools from transformational grammar to rewrite the surface structure of certain sentences in terms of more streamlined sentences amenable to algebraic formation. These linguistic techniques allow for the identification of key nouns that become single algebraic symbols, while other linguistic rules show how these …

Nourishing Motherhood: A Self-Paced Online Nutrition Curriculum For Women To Support Mental Well-Being And Optimize Health During Pregnancy And Post Birth, Imogen Knight

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major public health burden, affecting approximately one in seven women and contributing to numerous adverse outcomes that include poor maternal-infant bonds, failure of breastfeeding, negative parenting practices, and marital discord. Nutrition has been increasingly recognized as a modifiable risk factor in the prevention and management of depressive symptoms, yet nutrition education remains underutilized in perinatal care. This project aimed to develop an accessible, evidence-based online nutrition curriculum designed for women from preconception through the postpartum period. The curriculum comprises five evidence-based modules rooted in Social Cognitive Theory to promote learner engagement, self-efficacy, and sustained behavior …

A Strand In The Web: My Amish Roots Among The Swiss Anabaptists, Duane Schlabach Jun 2025

A Strand In The Web: My Amish Roots Among The Swiss Anabaptists, Duane Schlabach

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The early morning summer sun cuts through the murmuring leaves of the towering maple tree rooted deeply on the edge of the large common area in Interlaken, Switzerland. It’s 2018, and the pealing bells from the Schlosskirche [castle church] still cut through the ground fog hanging along the water’s edge, crescendo over the lakes, and reverberate off the cliff walls like it has for countless generations. The pull of ancestral voices from the misty northern shorelines of Lake Thun in Oberhofen settles deep into the marrow of my identity. I stand in my Heimatort [place of origin] the land where …

On The Linguistic History Of The Swiss Amish In Indiana, Tobias Frick

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Between 1789 and 1914, about half a million Swiss citizens left their country to find new opportunities abroad.1 By 1880, more than 88,000 Swiss had settled in the United States of America.2 These immigrants carried not only their earthly possessions and their knowledge to the foreign lands, but also brought their Swiss German dialects i.e. their linguistic varieties with them. In most settlements, the Swiss vernaculars were replaced by the majority language of English at some point. The Swiss settlers in New Glarus, Wisconsin, for example, upheld their linguistic variety for several generations before shifting to English.3 An exception is …

An Insight Into The “Berglihütte” In 1908: Grindelwald Mountain Guides – Frozen For The Star Photographer, Karl Horat

Swiss American Historical Society Review

We are in 1908, inside the “Berglihütte”, which had been built by the Grindelwald section of the Swiss Alpine Club almost forty years earlier. Since then, it has been perched like an eagle’s nest on a rocky ridge in the middle of the sea of ice at an altitude of around 3,300 meters.

The construction sector is a major consumer of raw materials and a significant contributor to environmental degradation. Circular economy (CE) - an economic and systemic approach aimed at minimizing waste and fostering sustainable resource use - offers a remedy for these impacts. However, CE adoption in construction remains under-researched and limited. Accordingly, there is a need to provide a comprehensive understanding of CE decision-making factors in construction. This paper addresses this research need. First, the authors reviewed 138 journal articles on CE in construction, published between 2015 and 2023, and compiled a comprehensive list of 40 factors influencing CE decision-making. …

Scaffolded Integration: Aligning Ai Literacy With Authentic Assessment Through A Revised Taxonomy In Education, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

The accelerating prevalence of generative artificial intelligence in educational and professional spheres necessitates a reevaluation of when and how such technologies are introduced within pedagogical practice. The principal challenge for educators is not merely the imperative to prepare students for an AI-driven world, but rather to ensure that assessment practices remain authentic—providing an accurate measure of what students can independently achieve before leveraging the augmentation potential of intelligent systems. This article contends that the incremental introduction of AI, mapped onto a scaffolded framework aligned with a revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, constitutes a methodologically sound approach for maintaining academic integrity, fostering transferable …

Microstructural Evolution And Rheological Enhancement Of Asphalt–Rubber Binders: Unveiling The Role Of Morphology In Performance, Eslam Deef-Allah, Mohyeldin Ragab, Mohamed Attia, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding the development of an asphalt binder's internal network structure is essential when interacting asphalt and crumb rubber. Thus, the focus of this study was to reveal the development of asphalt–rubber binders' (A-RBs) network structures at different interaction times and their correlation with performance. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to image the morphologies of the binders, and the binders' performances were explored rheologically with a dynamic shear rheometer. Extending the interaction time to 8 h and utilizing a soft binder altered the network structures from agglomerated dispersoids—minuscule distributed phase zones embedded in the continuous matrix of the asphalt binder—to …

Reducing Carbon Emissions Through Sustainable Food Consumption: Applying An A-S-I Framework On Beijing Residents, Xuan Yang, Jiaxin Zou, Jingyao Gao, Shu Yang Jun 2025

Reducing Carbon Emissions Through Sustainable Food Consumption: Applying An A-S-I Framework On Beijing Residents, Xuan Yang, Jiaxin Zou, Jingyao Gao, Shu Yang

Student Publications

The food sector represents one of the largest contributors to global climate change, making it urgent for the public to transform their food consumption behavior. However, food consumption behaviors that can facilitate carbon reduction, and how to classify these behaviors from the perspective of behavioral science, have not been deeply explored. This study pioneers a novel categorization of carbon-mitigating food consumption behaviors based on an A-S-I framework (i.e., “Avoid” food loss and waste, “Shift” to low-carbon alternatives, and “Improve” dietary structure). Such a classification not only encompasses the full spectrum of emission-altering behaviors but also enables identification of common determinants …

Acquisition Strategy For Innovation Under Competence-Destroying Change: Empirical Study—Pharmaceutical Company's Biotechnology Company Acquisition, Joo Tae Sung Jun 2025

Acquisition Strategy For Innovation Under Competence-Destroying Change: Empirical Study—Pharmaceutical Company's Biotechnology Company Acquisition, Joo Tae Sung

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In response to declining R&D productivity and successive patent cliffs, pharmaceutical companies are increasingly acquiring biotechnology firms to sustain innovation. These acquisitions often occur under conditions of competence-destroying change, where the acquirer's chemistry-based knowledge base does not overlap with the biotechnology expertise of the target, challenging traditional theories that emphasize absorptive capacity and knowledge similarity.
This study introduces therapeutic knowledge, defined as the acquirer’s expertise in specific disease areas, as a distinct and critical dimension that interacts with both chemistry-based and biotechnology-based knowledge. Using a dataset of 212 observations across therapeutic areas from 80 acquisitions, the analysis uncovers an inverted …

Bridging Theory And Practice: A Strategic Overhaul Of The Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Internship Experience At A Small Private University, Marisa L. Corey, Jennifer D. Sargent, Michelle R. Stuart

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Behind the steady decline in teacher retention in the United States—not to mention the lower number of candidates entering the profession—many teachers are leaving early on account of having been inadequately prepared for the challenges of a diverse classroom. Teacher preparation programs (TPPs), also known as teacher education programs (TEPs), are tasked with equipping preservice student teachers with the knowledge, skills, and strategies that they need to succeed. However, a recent audit conducted by TPI-US (Teacher Preparation Inspection–US) revealed significant deficits in the undergraduate TPP at an identified university in southeast Florida. A failure to align coursework with clinical internship …
