Siliciclastic Cave Or Diamond Mine? Multiapproach Investigation In Igatu Village, Chapada Diamantina, Northeastern Brazil, Raphael Parra, Ricardo G. F. De A. Pereira, Leonardo F. Vieira, Rubson P. Maia
International Journal of Speleology
The territory around Igatu, as that of many villages in southeastern Chapada Diamantina (Bahia, Brazil), was deeply modified by diamond mine activity. Caves were special targets for miners, since they can act as diamond-bearing sediment traps, and the Canal da Fumaça Cave was one of the most important and rich of them. The question that arises is whether the formation is a natural cave or an artificial diamond mine. In order to answer this question, we developed speleological and geological studies with detailed cave surveys, remote sensing and field measurements for structural analysis, optical and electronic microscope for petrographic characterization, …

Managing Values-Based Purchasing In School Nutrition Programs, Laura Lee Benavidez
Managing Values-Based Purchasing In School Nutrition Programs, Laura Lee Benavidez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School nutrition managers face the challenge of balancing values-based purchasing (VBP) with maintaining student participation and budgetary stability. While VBP integrates sustainability, environmental impact, and animal safety, these priorities may sometimes compete with traditional goals, such as cost efficiency and meal accessibility. Grounded in program evaluation theory, the purpose of this mixed methods explanatory sequential study was to examine how school food service managers implement VPB, integrating procurement and nutrition transparency while managing participation and costs. The quantitative phase focused on participation trends, cost structures, and procurement metrics across diverse school districts to establish a foundation for understanding VBP’s measurable …

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski
Publications and Research
Recognizing that libraries serve multiple constituencies and subject areas, this chapter documents and advocates for development of transdisciplinary arts-based research (ABR) and culture-related projects linked to environmental challenges. Libraries contribute collections and spaces, as well as the research of library and information scientists. Libraries are currently among invisible contributors to sustainability planning and services. The chapter will link this invisibility to the value of what visual arts refer to as negative space elements in subjects ranging from traditional ecological knowledge to environmental science. Library collections, projects, and research contribute to education for sustainable development (ESD) as required to achieve the …
#Clandestini: How Italy's Center-Right Parliamentary Coalition Frames The Migrant Crisis On Social Media, Jenna Lynn Depasquale
#Clandestini: How Italy's Center-Right Parliamentary Coalition Frames The Migrant Crisis On Social Media, Jenna Lynn Depasquale
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the intersection of Italian neo-fascism, the Mediterranean migrant crisis, and digital media. Through a qualitative content analysis of the Twitter and Instagram posts made by Italy's center-right parliamentary coalition from 2014-2018, this research outlines frameworks that facilitate both the physical and social deaths of migrants. Twitter is a platform on which bite-sized xenophobic messages characterize migrants as criminals, spoiled youth, spreaders of infectious disease, and future terrorists--sometimes in a contradictory fashion. Instagram is a medium for conveying Italian identity and history, which disregards the longstanding contributions of people of color, including Muslims, in Southern Italy. Comment sections …
What This Work Really Takes: Lessons, Tensions, And Student Perspectives In A Social Justice Math Classroom, Kathryn Elizabeth Roman
What This Work Really Takes: Lessons, Tensions, And Student Perspectives In A Social Justice Math Classroom, Kathryn Elizabeth Roman
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years, there have been growing calls for mathematics instruction that engages students in understanding and critiquing injustice through mathematics. While resources for social justice math (SJM) lessons have become increasingly available, implementing these lessons in real classrooms--with real students, real time constraints, and real pressures--remains a challenge. This dissertation explores how teachers and students navigate this complexity through three connected papers.
The first paper introduces a framework to support teachers and mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) in selecting and modifying pre-designed SJM lessons (PSJMLs). The framework is organized around three guiding principles: (1) center student identity and teacher self-awareness, …
Development Of A Low-Cost Electron Microscope For Educational Purposes, Christopher Halseth
Development Of A Low-Cost Electron Microscope For Educational Purposes, Christopher Halseth
Dissertations and Theses
Electron microscopy is a powerful tool for exploring microscopic world, yet its high cost and operational complexity severely limit accessibility, particularly within educational institutions. Commercial systems are often designed as opaque "black boxes," further hindering hands-on learning and experimentation. This dissertation introduces the Educational Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscope (EduSEM), a project designed to overcome these barriers by developing a low-cost, modular, and transparent electron microscope optimized for educational use.
The EduSEM achieves significant cost reduction by operating in a rough vacuum environment (1-20 mTorr), eliminating the need for expensive high-vacuum pumps. This necessitates novel component designs tolerant of higher pressures. The …

Breaking The Rules: Post-Translational Modifications And Proteome Dynamics During Anoxia, Chelsea Jordan Hughes
Dissertations and Theses
Most organisms are ill-equipped to survive anoxia, but some organisms have developed molecular strategies to mitigate the cellular stressors associated with a lack of oxygen. While it is established that anoxic survival is contingent on metabolic suppression, it is unclear what mechanisms support this change in gene expression. Gene expression is regulated by a variety of mechanisms within the cell, including alteration of chromatin structure through histone modifications and protein modifications which contribute to the ever-changing proteomic landscape of the cell. Protein modifications such as ubiquitylation can lead to the degradation of proteins, while modifications to transcription factors can change …
A Comparative Study Of Standards-Based And Traditional Grading Among Ninth-Grade Students, Senitra Lachelle Upton
A Comparative Study Of Standards-Based And Traditional Grading Among Ninth-Grade Students, Senitra Lachelle Upton
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Abstract This study examined the impact of standards-based grading (SBG) on the performance of ninth-grade students in English and Mathematics from 2021 to 2023. Using a comparative research design, archival performance data from School A (SBG) and School B (traditional grading) in a public school district in Tennessee were analyzed. Independent t-tests showed that Math scores were consistently higher under traditional grading (p < .001, d = 0.53-0.70) across all years. In English, SBG students outperformed their peers in 2021 (p = .001, d = 0.32), but by 2023, traditional grading yielded higher scores (p = .002, d = 0.46). These findings challenge the assumption that SBG improves academic achievement and highlight the role of contextual factors such as teacher adaptation, implementation fidelity, and subject-specific learning demands. The decline in English performance under SBG suggests difficulties in maintaining standards alignment and student acclimatization to a mastery-based system. In contrast, traditional grading's structured point system may better support procedural retention in Mathematics. This study emphasized the need for systemic evaluation of grading reforms, considering subject-specific requirements, student behaviors, and community attitudes. While SBG aligns with mastery-oriented instruction, its effectiveness depends on addressing practical concerns, such as teacher workload, grading consistency, and assessment transparency. These findings contribute to the discourse on equity in grading and encourage policymakers to adopt evidence-driven, context-based decisions. Future research should explore subgroup variations and longitudinal effects of grading interventions to enhance diverse instructional practices. Efficient Signal Synthesis For Data Augmentation Using Generative Ai, Yagna Veera Narayan Kaasaragadda
Efficient Signal Synthesis For Data Augmentation Using Generative Ai, Yagna Veera Narayan Kaasaragadda
Theses and Dissertations
Modern signal processing AI applications face increasing demands for diverse training data while operating under computational constraints. State-of-the-art generative models, though effective, often require prohibitive resources, limiting their deployment in real-time or embedded systems. This thesis proposes a computationally efficient framework for synthetic signal generation using a two-stage architecture that combines a Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder (VQ-VAE) with either a decoder-only transformer or a discrete diffusion model. The VQ-VAE encodes high-dimensional signals into discrete latent tokens, significantly reducing model complexity while enabling symbolic sequence modeling. These discrete representations are then modeled using transformer-based autoregressive models or Score Entropy Discrete Diffusion …

BACKGROUND: Estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) correlates with intravascular congestion and prognosis in patients with heart failure. The ePVS relationship with invasive hemodynamic profiling and clinical outcomes in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) remains unclear.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included LC patients who underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) between 2018 and 2023. Estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) was calculated using the Strauss-derived Duarte formula, with patients classified into high (> 5.5%) and low-ePVS (≤ 5.5%) groups. Cox-multivariable analysis was used to determine if ePVS was associated with all-cause mortality within 1 year post-RHC among transplant-free patients.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health concern affecting 10.5% of the adult population and is projected to rise significantly in the coming decades. Lifestyle modification programs, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), can effectively reduce T2D risk among individuals with prediabetes. However, their implementation in real-world healthcare settings remains poor, particularly in Spain, where T2D prevalence is the highest in Europe. The ALADIM study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of an adapted DPP in Spanish Primary Care Centers (PCCs). The primary effectiveness outcome is weight, the co-primary implementation outcome is implementation fidelity. We will …

There has been growing interest in using the judgment bias test (JBT) to study birds' affective states by assessing their responses to ambiguous cues. The objective of this study was to investigate the affective state of two chicken breeds with different evolutionary histories: the Red Junglefowl (RJF), the primary ancestor of modern chickens, and the Athens Canadian Random Bred (ACRB), a rustic domesticated breed, using …

Purpose: Analyze phenotypic data from knockout mice with late-adult retinal pathologic phenotypes to identify genes associated with development of adult-onset retinal diseases.
Methods: The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) database was queried for genes associated with abnormal retinal phenotypes in the late-adult knockout mouse pipeline (49-80 weeks postnatal age). We identified human orthologs and performed protein-protein analysis and biological pathways analysis with known inherited retinal disease (IRD) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) genes using Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING), PLatform for Analysis of single cell Eye in a Disk (PLAE), Protein Analysis Through Evolutionary Relationships (PANTHER), …
