Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Jack Rabbit II (JR-II) Mock Urban Environment field test was reproduced in a 1:50 scale physical model in the wind tunnel at the Chemical Hazards Research Center of the University of Arkansas. The agreement of the approaching wind characteristics between field test and model was verified using 3D Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). 2D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) tests were conducted in the model to obtain velocity measurements in the MUE. Velocity measurements taken before and during a simulated chlorine release were compared. PIV results show the general flow complexity in the last rows of the MUE and the impact …

What Can We Learn From The High School Math Reform Efforts In California, Georgia, And Oregon? A Policy Analysis, Yanira Vazquez Jul 2025

What Can We Learn From The High School Math Reform Efforts In California, Georgia, And Oregon? A Policy Analysis, Yanira Vazquez

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Using publicly available data sources, this policy analysis examined how three states—California, Georgia, and Oregon—approached high school mathematics reforms to address questions regarding what prompted these states to revise their high school math standards and course pathways; how their approaches to reform were similar or different; and what other states could learn from their methods.

Individual state cases were developed, focusing on content standards, course pathways, and graduation requirements. A cross-case study was created to compare reforms from the three states.

While all states aimed to reform high school mathematics to address equity issues and offer options aligned with students’ …

Can Mere Possession Of A Consumer Product Boast Your Self-Efficacy? : A Cultural Perspective, Yixuan Gao Jul 2025

Can Mere Possession Of A Consumer Product Boast Your Self-Efficacy? : A Cultural Perspective, Yixuan Gao

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Beggan (1992) introduced the mere ownership effect, suggesting that people evaluate owned objects more positively. Beggan argued that ownership fosters a psychological bond between people and their possessions, driven by self-enhancement motives (e.g., “I am good, thus my object must be good”). Yeung et al. (2017, 2020) extended the mere ownership effect, showing that ownership influences self-evaluations (e.g., I own a book so I am knowledgeable). Previous studies on the “person-based” mere ownership effect have primarily focused on East Asian participants. This thesis aims to compare cross-cultural differences, if any, in the “person-based” mere ownership effect (Study 1), and systematically …

This is a site of geologic excavation; where charged voices like porous monoliths and forked-tongue shapeshifters call out in fragmented polyphony. What lies broken or misshapen, what can be pieced back together.

What is purity when the body that is being inherited is drowning in murky waters.

OBJECTIVES: Physician burnout in emergency medicine has serious consequences. An underrecognized stressor for physicians may be the emergency department (ED) environment itself. EDs can be noisy and chaotic, lack natural light, and have challenging layouts that create patient care and safety concerns. This study examines the relationship between the ED-built environment and physician workplace stress.

METHODS: A qualitative study of ED-attending physicians from a level I trauma center ED in Philadelphia was conducted. Participants underwent a semistructured interview followed by a walkthrough of a high-fidelity virtual reality (VR) simulation of the participant's ED. In the VR simulation, they rated the …

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is the most common form of spinal deformity with unclear pathogenesis. In this study, we first reanalyzed the loci associated with IS, drawing upon previous studies. Subsequently, we mapped these loci to candidate genes using either location-based or function-based strategies. To further substantiate our findings, we verified the enrichment of variants within these candidate genes across several large IS cohorts encompassing Chinese, East Asian, and European populations. Consequently, we identified variants in the EPHA4 gene as compelling candidates for IS. To confirm their pathogenicity, we generated zebrafish mutants of epha4a. Remarkably, the zebrafish epha4a mutants exhibited …

Objective: This study aimed to investigate serum metabolomic biomarkers associated with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and evaluate their performance in improving T2DM risk prediction.

Methods: Untargeted proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy-based metabolomics analyses were conducted in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA; n = 3460; discovery cohort) and The Rotterdam Study (RS; n = 1556; replication cohort). Multivariable cause-specific hazards models were used to analyze the associations between 23 571 serum metabolomic spectral variables and incident T2DM. Replicated metabolites required an false discovery rate-adjusted P < .01 in MESA, P < .05 in RS, and consistent direction of association. Pathway and network analyses were conducted to elucidate biological mechanisms underlying T2DM development. The utility of the replicated metabolites in improving T2DM risk prediction was assessed based on the Framingham Diabetes Risk Score. A 2-sample Mendelian randomization was conducted to assess causal associations.

Results: Nineteen metabolites were significantly associated with incident T2DM. Pathway analyses …

Recent evidence indicates that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) may play a causal role in action stopping, potentially representing a novel neuromodulation target for inhibitory control dysfunctions. Here, we leverage intracranial recordings in human subjects to establish the timing and directionality of information flow between IPS and prefrontal and cingulate regions during action stopping. Prior to successful inhibition, information flows primarily from the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), a critical inhibitory control node, to IPS. In contrast, during stopping errors the communication between IPS and IFG is lacking, and IPS is engaged by posterior cingulate cortex, an area outside of the classical …

South Asian individuals (SA), representing approximately one quarter of the global population, experience a disproportionately high burden of cardiovascular disease. Some of this increased susceptibility is accounted for by traditional risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, carbohydrate-rich diets, and rising rates of obesity and metabolic syndrome. However, other previously underappreciated risk factors may also play a crucial role. These include environmental pollution, genetic factors, and Lp(a) (lipoprotein(a)). Various epidemiological and genetic studies support the role of Lp(a) as a causal and independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. SA have a higher prevalence of elevated Lp(a) levels (25% have levels …

The Ethics Of Mass Communication Jul 2025

The Ethics Of Mass Communication

Communication Research Trends

Recent years have seen an unprecedented uncertainty and debate over the ethics of mass media. James Thomson, curator of Nieman fellowships for journalists at Harvard University, detects in experienced journalists increasing doubt - even cynicism - regarding the morality of many accepted media practices. John Birt, associated with ITV in London, notes much more questioning of the morality of television programming in Britain.

One might expect the churches to help in clarifying issues of media ethics. The Catholic Church, for example, has a strong tradition of philosophical analysis of ethical problems. Yet, surprisingly, except in Spain, one finds little involvement …

The New International Information Order Jul 2025

The New International Information Order

Communication Research Trends

In the Nineteenth Century the lines of international communication tended to follow the paths of the NorthAtlantic empires. The cartel of European and American news agencies divided up the world according to the political and economic spheres of influence of the day. Reuters in London took the British Empire; Havas in Paris, the Latin world and French-speaking dependencies; Wolff in Berlin, the Scandinavian countries and Eastern Europe; the American Associated Press and United Press followed U.S. expansion. Just as roads held together the Roman Empire, so transoceanic cables, radio frequencies and satellites have been the lifelines of modern empires.

No One Listens To Melian: When Women Speak And Men Ignore Them In Middle-Earth, Sara Brown Jul 2025

No One Listens To Melian: When Women Speak And Men Ignore Them In Middle-Earth, Sara Brown

Journal of Tolkien Research

Throughout J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium, opportunities exist for male characters to participate in and learn from the wisdom and experience offered by female characters: what is remarkable is how often they fail to do so. The consequences of this failure are often considerable, ranging from a failed marriage (Aldarion and Erendis) to the loss of an entire kingdom (Melian and Thingol). However, on one occasion where a female character, Aredhel, is listened to, she is then severely punished via the narrative. The question must therefore be asked – what is Tolkien telling us about this gendered space of learning?

The Long Pivot: The Development Of The Joint Warfighting Concept, Wilson C. Blythe Jr. Jul 2025

The Long Pivot: The Development Of The Joint Warfighting Concept, Wilson C. Blythe Jr.

Joint Force Quarterly

Military strategy evolves in response to global threats and technological advancements. This article examines the development of the Joint Warfighting Concept, a pivotal shift in U.S. military thinking towards confronting peer adversaries. The concept emerged from a process of reorienting the Department of Defense away from counterinsurgency operations and towards potential conflicts with modernized Russian and Chinese forces. Initially hindered by a lack of urgency, efforts to address this strategic shift gained momentum through initiatives like the Third Offset Strategy and subsequent national security documents. The Joint Warfighting Concept provides a unified vision for future warfare, guiding force modernization and …

The Philosophical Foundations Of The Civil-Military Relationship, John Mark Mattox Jul 2025

The Philosophical Foundations Of The Civil-Military Relationship, John Mark Mattox

Joint Force Quarterly

This article reexamines civil-military relations through a philosophical lens, arguing that they are far more complex than simple military subordination to civilian authority. Drawing on foundational models from Hobbes, Plato, medieval Christendom, and Clausewitz, it reveals a recurring tripartite structure of society: rulers, warriors, and citizens bound together by mutual responsibility and moral obligation. From Plato’s emphasis on virtue and justice to Clausewitz’s "paradoxical trinity" of people, military, and government, the article shows that the strength of any state depends on trust and collaboration among all three. True civil-military relations, it concludes, must be understood as a dynamic moral partnership …

Ghost Highway: De-Touring Albuquerque's Route 66, Madison A. Garay

Art & Art History ETDs

Route 66 was a U.S. Numbered Highway stretching from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA, rising to fame through music and popular culture. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Route 66 has a troublesome twin life as Central Avenue, a highly politicized space where bodies are contested. In this thesis, the function of public arts and architecture of Albuquerque’s main street thoroughfare, Central Avenue, will be analyzed as visual devices of U.S. Highway 66, or known in popular culture as “Route 66.” I employ a critical Derridean framework through Mark Fisher’s theorization of hauntology and Gerald Vizenor (White Earth Ojibwe)’s theory of …
