W-Rag: Weakly Supervised Dense Retrieval In Rag For Open-Domain Question Answering, Jinming Nian, Zhiyuan Peng, Qifan Wang, Yi Fang

Computer Science and Engineering

In knowledge-intensive tasks such as open-domain question answering (OpenQA), large language models (LLMs) often struggle to generate factual answers, relying solely on their internal (parametric) knowledge. To address this limitation, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems enhance LLMs by retrieving relevant information from external sources, thereby positioning the retriever as a pivotal component. Although dense retrieval demonstrates state-of-the-art performance, its training poses challenges due to the scarcity of ground-truth evidence, largely attributed to the high costs of human annotation. In this paper, we propose W-RAG, a method that draws weak training signals from the downstream task (such as OpenQA) of an LLM, …

The Art Of Memory: The Medieval Peutinger Map, Amber Shrewsbury Jul 2025

The Art Of Memory: The Medieval Peutinger Map, Amber Shrewsbury

Dissertations and Theses

The Peutinger map is an enigma: a twelfth-century map of the Roman Empire, it is secular and oddly shaped, its dimensions distorted to show Rome at the center of the world. Its creator, purpose, and provenance currently remain lost to history. Long considered by classicists to be a copy of a lost Roman original, the map has not been seriously examined by medievalists, possibly because it does not adhere to the Christian "T-O" style of medieval mappaemundi.

While other scholars have focused on what the Peutinger map reflects about ancient Rome, I have chosen to explore how the Peutinger …

Detection Of Neuron Derived Cfdna In Blood Plasma: A New Diagnostic Approach For Neurodegenerative Conditions, Chad Alan Pollard

Theses and Dissertations

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are characterized by the progressive loss of distinct neuronal subtypes, yet current diagnostic tools are either invasive, limited in resolution, or poorly suited for early detection and longitudinal monitoring. This dissertation began with a proof-of- concept study using bisulfite-PCR at a neuron-enriched locus to detect cortical neuron-derived cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in AD plasma samples, establishing the potential of cfDNA as a marker of neuronal injury. Building on these preliminary findings, a novel framework was developed utilizing Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) to profile genome-wide native DNA …

Thinking On Simulation Science And Engineering In The Era Of Artificial Intelligence, Wenhui Fan, Yuan Jiang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and computing technologies, simulation technologies have leapfrogged, propelling the discipline of simulation toward greater maturity. Research progress in computer simulation technologies both in China and abroad was reviewed, and the definition and connotation of simulation were clarified. It was proposed that the Chinese terms "仿真" "仿效"and " 模拟" be unified under a single term " 仿真" with corresponding "Simulation" "Emulation" and "Analog" in English translated uniformly as "Simulation". Simulation science and engineering discipline was delineated, which was grounded in three core theoretical foundations: analogical theory, computational theory, and model validation theory. The first-level …

Background: Obesity and underweight are increasingly common among young adult women, often resulting from complex interactions between diet, lifestyle, and socioeconomic factors. This study addresses that gap by applying machine learning to a wide range of behavioral, dietary, and demographic data. The main research question asks: What are the key factors influencing weight status among female university students, and how accurately can machine learning models identify them? We hypothesize that different factors are significantly associated with underweight, overweight, and obesity, and that machine learning can reliably detect these patterns. The aim is to identify the strongest predictors and support more …

Personalized Emoji Prediction Framework Using Personality, Emotion, And User Preferences, Mariam Lotfy Gaafar

Theses and Dissertations

Emoji prediction plays a vital role in digital communication by enriching text with personality, individual style, and emotional tone. However, existing frameworks primarily rely on user-generated text combined with statistical or language models, often overlooking the importance of individual user traits and contextual information. Recent research highlights that integrating user-specific features, such as historical usage patterns and emotional context, can significantly improve emoji prediction accuracy. Building on these insights, we propose a comprehensive emoji prediction framework that incorporates user history, personality traits, and real-time emotional context. We leverage the Pan17 corpus, which contains a sufficient number of posts per user, …

Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Effects On The Mesolimbic Dopamine Circuitry And Adaptations With Chronic Ethanol Exposure, Rachel Ji-Hyae Campbell Jul 2025

Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Effects On The Mesolimbic Dopamine Circuitry And Adaptations With Chronic Ethanol Exposure, Rachel Ji-Hyae Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

The mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system contributes to reward and reinforcement learning for ethanol (EtOH). The nucleus accumbens (NAc) receives DA input from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) encoding rewarding information. Acute EtOH increases NAc DA levels, and this DA response is attenuated with chronic EtOH exposure. Furthermore, chronic EtOH results in reduced DA release, increased DA clearance and presynaptic D2-type auto-receptor sensitization. Further research into EtOH-induced neural adaptations that modulate NAc DA release is explored herein, including changes in cholinergic interneurons (CIN), which are known regulators of DA transmission. One potential class of regulators are immune related cytokines, that can …

Source Characterization From Near-Field Acoustic Intensity On Moving Launch Vehicles, Carson F. Cunningham Jul 2025

Source Characterization From Near-Field Acoustic Intensity On Moving Launch Vehicles, Carson F. Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

Rocket launches generate extremely high acoustic levels, particularly in the low-frequency range, posing risks to both launch vehicle integrity and surrounding infrastructure. This thesis investigates the use of near-field acoustic intensity measurements to localize sound sources on moving launch vehicles, with a focus on characterizing source behavior during the early phases of liftoff. Using data from the Antares 230 NG-19 mission, acoustic pressure was recorded at multiple stations surrounding the pad, and the Phase and Amplitude Gradient Estimator (PAGE) method was employed to compute intensity vectors as a function of frequency and time. Signal processing parameters were systematically evaluated, including …

Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

While past research has predominantly focused on the role of myoglobin in meat color, investigations into the contributions of hemoglobin and cytochrome c are limited. Cytochrome c has the highest redox stability (P < 0.05), followed by myoglobin and hemoglobin. Electrochemistry analysis revealed that cytochrome c has a greater capacity (P < 0.05) to reduce than myoglobin and hemoglobin. Differential scanning calorimetry indicates that cytochrome c was most stable to heat (P < 0.05), while no differences were noted between myoglobin and hemoglobin. Structural analysis noted that greater heat and redox stability of cytochrome c might be attributed to fewer histidine residues (3) and more covalent bonds (4) than myoglobin (13), hemoglobin α (10), and hemoglobin β (6). This study suggests that the amino acid sequence and number of covalent bonds can impact the redox stability and heat-induced denaturation properties of myoglobin, hemoglobin, and cytochrome c.

Image-Based Inference Of Tumor Cell Trajectories Enables Large-Scale Cancer Progression Analysis, Yang Liu, Ling Cai, Ruichen Rong, Shidan Wang, Liwei Jia, Peiran Quan, Qin Zhou, Guanghua Xiao, Yang Xie

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Current approaches to estimating cell trajectories, tumor progression dynamics, and cell population diversity of tumor microenvironment often depend on single-cell RNA sequencing, which is costly and resource intensive. To address this limitation, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that leverages cell morphology features and histological spatial organization to classify tumor cell differentiation status, infer cell dynamic trajectories, and quantify tumor progression from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained whole-slide images. In three independent lung adenocarcinoma cohorts, our AI-based model accurately predicted cell differential status and provided quantifiable measures of tumor progression that were prognostic of patient survival. Spatial transcriptomic integrative analyses …

A Two-Stage Dual-Task Learning Strategy For Early Prediction Of Pathological Complete Response To Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy For Breast Cancer Using Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Images, Bowen Jing, Jing Wang Jul 2025

A Two-Stage Dual-Task Learning Strategy For Early Prediction Of Pathological Complete Response To Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy For Breast Cancer Using Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Images, Bowen Jing, Jing Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Early prediction of treatment response can facilitate personalized treatment for breast cancer patients. Studies on the I-SPY 2 clinical trial demonstrate that multi-time point dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (DCEMR) imaging improves the accuracy of predicting pathological complete response (pCR) to chemotherapy. However, previous image-based prediction models usually rely on mid- or post-treatment images to ensure the accuracy of prediction, which may outweigh the benefit of response-based adaptive treatment strategy. Accurately predicting the pCR at the early time point is desired yet remains challenging. To improve prediction accuracy at the early time point of treatment, we proposed a two-stage dual-task learning …

Matrix Molecules Associated With Both Regulation Of Inflammation And Pathogenic Outcomes Associated With The Surface Of The Lens In The Eyes Of Eau Mice, Phuong M. Le, Jodirae Dedreu, Mary J Mattapallil, Rachel R Caspi, Ryan Tomlinson, Mary Ann Stepp, A. Sue Menko

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Immune cells with immunoregulatory properties are recruited to the surface of the lens in the Experimental Autoimmune Uveitis (EAU) mouse and remain linked through resolution of EAU inflammation. Since protein components of the extracellular matrix provide biochemical and mechanical signals that regulate immune cell migration and phenotype, we investigated whether EAU inflammation caused matrix molecules to become associated with the lens surface. We focused on matrix proteins known to influence leukocyte phenotype and behavior, and/or lead to pathological outcomes in uveitis. We found that fibrinogen became associated with the lens capsule surface by the peak of EAU inflammation and increased …

I, As In We, Cj Maruyama Jul 2025

I, As In We, Cj Maruyama

Dissertations and Theses

I, as in We is a hybrid collection of poems, essays, fictional letters, documents, and photographs through which the author revisits ancestors and explores their multiracial roots. Drawing on stories, interviews and research grounded in the Japanese American experience, the collection develops a call-and-response polyvocality that spans generations and geographies. In its use of white space, form experimentation, and tonal shifts, the work confronts the fluid, often ambiguous boundaries that shape identity. The compiled written and visual materials evolve into an original document--one that reaches toward heritage, belonging, and truth.

Physical activity interventions effectively improve physical activity (i.e., daily step count) and reduce the risk of adverse health outcomes in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but effects on depression and anxiety are poorly understood. Behavioral interventions concurrently targeting both physical activity and mood symptoms are needed in this population. This paper describes acceptability testing and refinement of Step-CBT, a synchronous, video-delivered, pedometer-based physical activity intervention integrated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to improve step count in individuals with COPD; physical disability and depression and anxiety symptoms are secondary outcomes. Adults (N = 5) with COPD and clinically significant …

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a severe, progressive, and heterogeneous disease with a poor outcome. Inflammation plays a central role in disease pathogenesis; however, the interplay between immune changes and disease heterogeneity has been difficult to unravel. We performed a multilevel immunoinflammatory characterization of patients with COPD using flow cytometry, cytokine profiling, single-cell, or spatial transcriptomics in combination with machine learning algorithms. Our cross-cohort analysis demonstrated shared skewing of immune profiles in COPD lungs toward adaptive immune cells. We furthermore identified a subgroup of patients with COPD with a distinct immune profile, characterized by increased antigen-presenting cells, mast cells, …

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

This pilot study applies Computer-Aided Text Analysis (CATA) to examine Language Style Matching (LSM) in counseling transcripts, offering a novel metric for counselor education and supervision. Analyzing 50 suicide-focused and 100 general counseling sessions using LIWC-22 software, we found high LSM scores in both contexts (suicide-focused: M = 0.906; general: M = 0.903). Bayesian analysis provided moderate evidence (BF01 = 5.048) in support of the null hypothesis, indicating no significant difference between the two session types. The consistently high LSM suggests counselors effectively build strong alliances and align with client goals across topics. LSM analysis provides an objective measure of …

Being There: Perils Of Disembodied Mediation, Rob Mcniff

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Following the growth of online mediation during the COVID-19 pandemic, practitioners and ADR scholars sought to delineate the virtues and shortcomings of the online process. Many report satisfaction with online mediation. Still, critics find the process devoid of emotional experience or otherwise “dehumanizing.” As ADR practitioners contrast online and face-to-face experiences, and recommend a forum to disputing parties, they should acknowledge that online platforms can never replicate physical encounters between embodied persons. This Article draws on the work of 20th century philosophers, psychologists, and sociologists to explore mediation as corporeal encounter between embodied subjects. Online mediation, by constraining the involvement …

Corruption's Challenge To Arbitral Legitimacy, Margaret L. Moses Jul 2025

Corruption's Challenge To Arbitral Legitimacy, Margaret L. Moses

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

The widespread growth of corruption in international business transactions has created a crisis of legitimacy for international arbitration. Because international contracts regularly provide for resolution of disputes by arbitration, the deep-rooted presence of fraud, bribery, money laundering and other illicit activity raises challenges to arbitrators about their proper role in resolving disputes tainted by corruption. In cases of corruption, parties may refrain from presenting facts and evidence that reveal their deceptive practices. Arbitrators need to be more interventionist in these kinds of cases than they have been in traditional arbitration practice. Following the Introduction in Part I, Part II of …
