Exploring Open Pedagogy Principles: A Qualitative Study Of Undergraduate Experiences, Staci Gilpin, Stephanie Rollag Yoon, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Open pedagogy, characterisedby students creating or co-creating artefacts that others may use, offers transformative opportunities for students to move beyond passive learning into active content creation. This qualitative study examines the experiences of 25 undergraduate students who engage with open pedagogy principles, including creation-centred learning, collaboration, audience engagement, and the integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Creative Commons (CC) licensing. Using surveys and interviews, we identified three key themes: the importance of real audiences, authentic connections over prescribed collaborations, and rethinking the role of Creative Commons. Findings suggest that open pedagogy enhances student engagement and provides meaningful, real-world applications …

Non-Spectator Behavior Of A Neutral Phosphine Ligand Driven By A Redox-Active Boron Cluster, Jared R. Riffle, Cash L. Jowers, Sarah Luna, Mark D. Smith, Dmitry V. Peryshkov Jul 2025

Non-Spectator Behavior Of A Neutral Phosphine Ligand Driven By A Redox-Active Boron Cluster, Jared R. Riffle, Cash L. Jowers, Sarah Luna, Mark D. Smith, Dmitry V. Peryshkov

Faculty Publications

A new concept of ligand ambiphilicity that relies on the redox behavior of the indirectly coordinated boron cluster scaffold instead of the direct involvement of a single center in a ligand is introduced. A copper(I) complex of a carboranyl-based triphosphine, [tBuP-closo-{C2B10}-PhP-closo-{C2B10}-tBuP]CuPF6, in acetonitrile solution coordinates an exogenous X− anion (X− = Cl− or N3−) at the phosphorus center of the ligand and not at the cationic metal site to form [tBuP(X)-nido-{C2B …

Ctnna3 Deficiency Promotes Heart Regeneration By Enhancing Cardiomyocyte Proliferation In Neonatal Mice, Sha Zou, Wuhou Dai, Wufan Tao, Jifen Li, Zeyi Cheng, Hongyan Wang Jul 2025

Ctnna3 Deficiency Promotes Heart Regeneration By Enhancing Cardiomyocyte Proliferation In Neonatal Mice, Sha Zou, Wuhou Dai, Wufan Tao, Jifen Li, Zeyi Cheng, Hongyan Wang

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background: Heart regeneration requires renewal of lost cardiomyocytes. However, the mammalian heart loses its proliferative capacity soon after birth, and the molecular signaling underlying the loss of cardiac proliferation postnatally is not fully understood.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the role of Catenin alpha 3 (Ctnna3), coding for alpha T catenin (αT-catenin) protein in regulating cardiomyocyte proliferation and heart regeneration during the neonatal period.

Methods: Here we report that ablation of Ctnna3 and highly expressed in hearts, accelerated heart regeneration following heart apex resection in neonatal mice.

Results: Our results show that Ctnna3 deficiency enhances cardiomyocyte proliferation …

The Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Curricula: A Moral Obligation, Kira I. Vasquez Jul 2025

The Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Curricula: A Moral Obligation, Kira I. Vasquez

Masters Projects

Culturally responsive education has long been accepted as critical to supporting students’ academic, social and emotional success at school–particularly for those from historically marginalized communities. Under the current presidential administration, however, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have come under attack, and many educators avoid their professional and moral obligation to implement culturally responsive curriculum for fear of political and professional repercussions. Grounded in Gloria Ladson-Billing’s theory of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) and Gholdy Muhammad’s framework of Culturally and Historically Responsive Education (CHRE), this project aims to reaffirm the value of culturally responsive teaching and learning. Chapter One outlines the problem, …

Promise In Practice: Building Belonging And Persistence Through Academic Advising, Mary E. Lawrence Jul 2025

Promise In Practice: Building Belonging And Persistence Through Academic Advising, Mary E. Lawrence

Masters Projects

Promise scholarships were created to remove financial barriers to higher education, but financial support is not enough to help students succeed. This project focuses on developing an academic advising office at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) to support students receiving the Grand Rapids Promise Zone (GRPZ) Scholarship. Using Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Model and Sanford’s Theory of Challenge and Support as a foundation, the project outlines a culturally responsive and student-centered advising framework. The goal is to improve student retention and persistence, increase academic advising, and build meaningful relationships between students and advisors. Project components include an advising handbook, a …

Examining Light-Circadian Interactions In Regulation Of Amyloid Plaque Pathology, Melvin William King Jul 2025

Examining Light-Circadian Interactions In Regulation Of Amyloid Plaque Pathology, Melvin William King

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Circadian disruption has long been appreciated as a downstream consequence of Alzheimer’s Disease in humans. However, an upstream role for circadian disruption in regulating AD pathology remains an open question. The mammalian circadian system is hierarchical, with cellular clocks – driven largely by BMAL1 – synchronized by the hypothalamic SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus) via a combination of hormonal and synaptic cues. To assess the relative contributions of each component to Alzheimer’s Disease pathology, we crossed mice harboring either microglial (Cx3cr1/Lyz2-Cre) or GABAergic (VGAT-iCre, expressed in more than 95% of the SCN) BMAL1-knockout to mouse models of Aβ aggregation (5xFAD; APP/PS1-21), which …

Learning From Conditional Data Distributions, Jizhou Huang Jul 2025

Learning From Conditional Data Distributions, Jizhou Huang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Traditional machine learning paradigms often rely on a single global model trained on an entire dataset, aiming for broad generalization across all instances. However, in many real-world applications, the underlying data distribution is heterogeneous, and meaningful predictions often require models that focus on specific subpopulations rather than treating the data as a whole. This motivates the study of learning from conditional distributions, a framework where predictive models are designed to capture the structure and properties of restricted subsets of the data, leading to improved accuracy, fairness, and interpretability. This dissertation explores three key subproblems that exemplify different aspects of learning …

The Constellation Of American Voters: Understanding Americans Who Live In And Out Of American Municipalities, Jordan Duffin Wong Jul 2025

The Constellation Of American Voters: Understanding Americans Who Live In And Out Of American Municipalities, Jordan Duffin Wong

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

More than 130 million Americans live in unincorporated areas, or the spaces outside the boundaries of cities, towns, and villages. Despite this, relatively little attention has been paid to whether, how, and why residents of unincorporated areas differ from their municipality-dwelling counterparts. In this dissertation, I explore the answers to these questions by establishing a new theoretical framework that rigorously defines, bounds, and partitions unincorporated space. Drawing on the near-universe of American voters, I illustrate, with unparalleled precision, where and how Americans have sorted into and out of municipalities, and show that different mechanisms drive these phenomena. Furthermore, I explore …

Postpartum Experiences Of Arab Women And The Educational Role Of The Mother, Diana Ikki Jul 2025

Postpartum Experiences Of Arab Women And The Educational Role Of The Mother, Diana Ikki

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Women in the Arab world traditionally observe a 40-day postpartum rest period, during which they rest, follow specific rituals, and learn to care for their newborn under the guidance and care of a family matriarch, typically their mother. Despite the prevalence of this practice, there is limited empirical research exploring the educational role of Arab mothers during their daughters' postpartum period; this qualitative study addressed this gap. Foundational to this study’s theoretical framework was Ramona Mercer’s theory of maternal role attainment. The study addressed two research questions: how Arab women describe their postpartum experiences and the educational role their mothers …

Unmasking The Heart Of Osimertinib: A Closer Look At Drug-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Muhammad Sabri, Aheed Javaid, Hussam Al Hennawi, Hamza Muhammadzai, Vamshi Mallavarapu Jul 2025

Unmasking The Heart Of Osimertinib: A Closer Look At Drug-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Muhammad Sabri, Aheed Javaid, Hussam Al Hennawi, Hamza Muhammadzai, Vamshi Mallavarapu

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

BACKGROUND: Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is an effective therapy for epidermal growth factor receptor-mutated non-small cell lung cancer, but it has been associated with a higher incidence of cardiotoxicity.

CASE SUMMARY: A 91-year-old woman on osimertinib 80 mg daily presented with acute dyspnea and was found to have a newly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction of 30%. Coronary angiography excluded obstructive coronary disease. Osimertinib was discontinued, and guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) was initiated, resulting in left ventricular ejection fraction recovery to 60%. The patient was successfully rechallenged with osimertinib while continuing GDMT, without recurrence …

An Analysis Of Vertical Deformation On Cianjur Earthquake 2022, Candra Perkasa Nurlukman, Adi Wibowo Jul 2025

An Analysis Of Vertical Deformation On Cianjur Earthquake 2022, Candra Perkasa Nurlukman, Adi Wibowo

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

A shallow crustal-type earthquake on a surface fault occurred on November 21, 2022, in Cianjur, West Java. This destructive earthquake resulted in a loss of life, many houses were damaged, and landslides at several points. So, the research was analyzed using the DInSAR method to see the deformation and its relationship with the existing conditions in the field. We get the result of a vertical subsidence in the earthquake area of up to 101 millimeters. Through the distribution of displacement results, we found no overlapping faults at that location, identifying the formation of a new fault. In the distribution area …

Experienced Latinx Urban Gardeners In San Jose, Ca, Offer Strategies For Climate Justice And Resilience, Claudia S. Damiani Fontana Jul 2025

Experienced Latinx Urban Gardeners In San Jose, Ca, Offer Strategies For Climate Justice And Resilience, Claudia S. Damiani Fontana

Master's Theses

Low-income and underinvested communities will be disproportionately affected by climate change due to limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient support systems. Urban gardeners are responding to the need to adapt to new climate conditions while sustaining their food sources and cultural practices. Many have adapted thanks to local interventions led by the government and non-profit agencies. For this study, I partnered with La Mesa Verde (LMV), a gardening and food justice program that works with low-income Latinx families in San José, and I documented the contributions of experienced Latinx gardeners, especially those with agricultural backgrounds, to climate-resilient gardening in San …
