In this super-fun lesson, kids are going outside to explore the schoolyard! They will look for all sorts of amazing plants, also called flora. They will use a special tablet to help us learn their names and then draw pictures of them. They will also dig a little to see the soil and learn why it's so important for plants to grow big and strong. And guess what? They’ll even look for little animals like ants or butterflies, also called fauna, that live near the plants, because everything in nature works together! They'll also hear cool stories about how people …
Magnet Council Toolkit For Organizations Seeking Magnet Status And Recruitment, Andrew J. Boone
Magnet Council Toolkit For Organizations Seeking Magnet Status And Recruitment, Andrew J. Boone
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: The problem was a lack of a standardized or structured process for the development of Magnet Councils. There is no clear pathway or materials to initiate the process, and one must start by applying to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) with little guidance prior to seeking help on the Magnet Journey. PICO Question: The PICO question that guided this DNP Project Toolkit development was as follows: For healthcare organizations pursuing Magnet status (P), how does the development of a structured Magnet Council Toolkit (I) compared to the absence of a formal toolkit (C), contribute to the validation …

Sos (Save Our Skin)- A Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury Reduction Quality, Nicholas A. La Mar
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are a significant source of preventable harm. Often associated with increased patient morbidity, reduced quality of life, and substantial financial costs. In 2023, a Northern California level II trauma center reported 44 HAPI cases, with 25% occurring in the telemetry units. Despite a hospital-wide reduction in HAPIs in 2024, telemetry units accounted for 33% of the cases in the first quarter of 2025, highlighting a need for targeted intervention.
Context: The project was conducted in four adult inpatient telemetry units of a 241-bed level two trauma center. The units faced challenges with inconsistent adherence to …
Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien
Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien
Masters Projects
Discussion-based pedagogy provides students with opportunities to practice collaborative and critical thinking skills that have proven impactful on reading and writing scores, interpersonal communication skills, and civic engagement. However, inexperienced discussion facilitators—as well as instructors who may not have clear purposes or objectives for discussion in their classrooms—may not be familiar with best practices and strategies for structuring rigorous, equitable, and engaging student talk. This project begins by investigating potential factors contributing to students' lack of interpersonal skills in the classroom, and ultimately identifies discussion-based pedagogy as a key solution. A theoretical basis for the merits of discursive learning is …

Transgressive Body, Open Mind, And Perceptive Spirit For Nurturing Soul: A Reflection On Teaching To Transgress, Akie F. Wenk
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
In this reflection essay, I discuss my journey into the liberatory pedagogy bell hooks champions. As a foreign-born Japanese woman, who speaks English as her second language, being in the classroom itself can be seen as a transgressive act. Positioning myself as an educator who strives to creates an environment that is liberatory for me and my students, I discuss my specific experience and relationship to theories surrounding critical feminist pedagogy and how I practice these theories in my own classroom.

Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a lifelong condition that requires effort and adjustment for managing physical, psychological, and social well-being to have the ability to engage in meaningful activities. As people living with SCI have higher rates of isolation and social disconnect, it is important to study group level approaches for addressing mental health.
Objectives: To determine the impact of virtual group coaching to enhance occupational performance, satisfaction, self-efficacy and relationship closeness in people living with SCI.
Methods: A quasi-experimental single-group pre/post-test design was used. Adults with SCI were recruited through online flyers, social media, newsletters, support groups, clinics, …

Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
INTRODUCTION
The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a family of 13 genetic connective tissue disorders that affect negatively physical and psychosocial health which in turns have been found to decrease their quality of life and self-determination (Baeza-Velasco et al., 2019; Bennet et al., 2021; Estrella & Fraizer, 2024; Tinkle et al., 2017; Palomo-Toucedo et al., 2020). Limited supports and services, including occupational therapy, are available for those with EDS (Estrella & Frazier, 2024; McDonald et al., 2023; Reychler et al., 2021). Those with EDS have requested better services to support their self-determination (Estrella & Frazier, 2024). Coaching has shown positive impacts …

Caregiver Attitudes Of Risky Outdoor Play For Toddlers With Developmental Delays And Disabilities In St. Louis, Missouri: A Socio-Ecological Perspective, Emily Korte-Stroff, Ot/L
Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
Abstract: Risky outdoor play fosters autonomy, emotional regulation, and resilience in early childhood, yet caregivers of toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities often face unique barriers to supporting such play. Limited research has examined how caregivers perceive the factors shaping these decisions, particularly in the United States context. This mixed-methods cross-sectional study explored how caregivers in the St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area perceive the socio-ecological factors shaping their attitudes toward risky outdoor play for children aged 13 to 47 months with developmental delays or disabilities. The project sought to first explore caregivers' perceptions of how interpersonal and individual factors, shape …
Sex, Stress And Hormones : The Role Of Modifiable Risk Factors In The Kinetics Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Hannah Marie Edwards
Sex, Stress And Hormones : The Role Of Modifiable Risk Factors In The Kinetics Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Hannah Marie Edwards
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease hallmarked by the presence of amyloid- plaques and tau tangles in the brain. The process of the disease begins decades prior to the onset of symptoms and is thought to be driven first by a buildup of amyloid- peptide in the extracellular space, triggering a cascade of pathology and symptomology culminating in loss of cerebral volume and cognitive impairment. Women are diagnosed with AD at a rate 2/3 higher than their male counterparts, even when controlling for age. While most driving factors of the disease are thought to be genetic, roughly 40% of …
Reducing The School-To-Prison Pipeline Through Restorative Practices And Culturally Responsive Teaching, William Clifford Banks Iii
Reducing The School-To-Prison Pipeline Through Restorative Practices And Culturally Responsive Teaching, William Clifford Banks Iii
Masters Projects
Research has shown there is a growing trend that students of color end up becoming incarcerated due to the school-to-prison pipeline. Students of color are being targeted by exclusionary policies at a higher rate than their white counterparts. School districts must reevaluate their discipline measures and adopt new policies that work to build positive relationships and communities within them. This project provides the groundwork for implementing restorative practices and culturally responsive teaching in schools, with the hope of building stronger community ties and reducing exclusionary discipline policies. The project provides research that supports the implementation of restorative practices and culturally …
Coloring Outside The Lines: Factors Facilitating Divergent Thinking, Michelle Baca Reinke
Coloring Outside The Lines: Factors Facilitating Divergent Thinking, Michelle Baca Reinke
Master's Theses
Divergent thinking involves producing a multitude of unique and diverse ideas. The ability to “color outside the lines” is crucial to business, education, and social domains. The flexibility, originality, and fluency dimensions of divergent thinking are commonly assessed using the Alternative Uses Task, which involves generating uses for common objects. Prior research suggests that high identification (first-person perspective) with schema-inconsistent experiences increases flexibility, while semantic density (degree of conceptual associations) impacts originality and fluency inversely. However, their combined effects across multiple divergent thinking dimensions remain unexplored. The present research investigated the interactive effects of identification (high, low), schema consistency (consistent, …
