Introduction: Recent studies have identified an association between regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) and subsequent infectious complications during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). We aimed to determine if RCA was associated with infectious complications in children and young adults receiving CRRT.

Methods: A secondary analysis of the multinational Worldwide Exploration of Renal Replacement Outcomes Collaborative in Kidney Disease (WE-ROCK) registry (34 centers, 9 countries), was performed, including patients from 2015 to 2018. Patients were excluded if they (1) died within 72 h of CRRT initiation, had minor trauma or were postsurgical (analysis 1), or (2) met an exclusion in analysis 1 …

The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Through Chomsky And Bremmer’S Interviews: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Noora Jameel, Sarab Khalil

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is seen as one of the most serious and controversial issues in the world. In this paper, the researcher seeks to highlight some crucial points with regard to this conflict by adopting critical discourse analysis (CDA) as the primary means of analysis. Since conflicts are usually accompanied by social wrongs, it is more appropriate to use Fairclough’s 2010 approach to CDA in order to get more logical results. However, the study aims to provide a critical analysis of two selected interview by two famous figures; Ian Bremmer and Noam Chomsky in order to highlight the following points: …

“Pride And Despair”: Denethor’S Struggles Against His Self-Woven Death, Ali Mirzabayati

Journal of Tolkien Research

This paper examines Denethor, Steward of Gondor, as a central figure illustrating the interplay of pride, fear, and mortality in The Lord of the Rings. It analyzes how his Númenórean heritage, grief over the loss of his sons, and obsession with control shape his decisions, leading to passivity, mistrust, and self-destruction. Drawing on Northern literary traditions, including the Danes’ prayers to the Gastbona in Beowulf and Boethian reflections on pride and despair, the study situates Denethor’s downfall within a broader cultural and philosophical context. By exploring how his fear of death undermines judgment and heroic potential, the paper highlights …

A Framework For The Role Of Vegetation Selection In Enhancing Educational Outdoor Spaces Through Ai Technology., Amira Mohamed, Mirette A. Esmat, Amira Mahrous Dr

Journal of Engineering Research

Well-designed outdoor spaces are increasingly recognised as critical components of environmental sustainability and community building within higher education institutions. Among the most influential elements in shaping these spaces is the strategic selection of vegetation, which must balance aesthetics, functionality, ecological value, and long-term maintenance. However, traditional plant selection methods remain time-consuming, labour-intensive, and often dependent on subjective judgement, posing significant challenges for landscape architects and campus planners. This paper explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative solution to enhance the plant selection process in educational outdoor environments. It introduces a comprehensive AI-driven framework that integrates key variables—including …

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration is one of the biggest celebrations for the Chinese Indonesians in Pontianak. This celebration allows the Chinese ethnic groups to remember and maintain their traditional roots while living in the host country. However, the high interest from non-Chinese Indonesians in visiting and participating in the CNY celebration raises questions about whether this diasporic activity unintentionally strengthens the favourability of the Indonesian people towards China and is used as a means of China's soft power. This study will discuss the spread of culture from the CNY Festival in Pontianak, which can serve as an instrument of …

Introduction To Special Issue On Unjust “Permission Structures” In/As Technical Communication, R. J. Lambert, Randall W. Monty, Kymberly O. Morquecho, Sarah Warren-Riley

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

The term “permission structure” has been popularized to describe a specific rhetorical strategy whereby communicators use the audience's existing beliefs and values to persuade them to change their original positions and/or take actions they otherwise would not. Even in its popular uses, permission structuring may be usefully understood as a form of technical communication by which audiences are strategically persuaded to accept or reject complex policy, scientific, and legal topics. However, scholars must resist popular jargon outpacing and superseding the use of technical concepts and critical discourse. Taken together, the seven articles in this special issue potentiate multiple critical, pedagogical, …

Background

Languages vary in their syntactic (e.g. word order in sentences), lexical (e.g. presence of specific word classes), and morphological (e.g. inflectional or derivational forms of words) properties. This cross-linguistic variation in language typology influences the manifestation of agrammatic symptoms. However, most theoretical models of agrammatism are based on English and a few European languages, limiting their generalizability. This narrow focus neglects the rich syntactic, lexical and morphological variations available in languages globally. Clinically, the lack of language-specific characteristics of agrammatic impairments limits translational potential for precise and improved diagnosis. The Aphasia in South Asian Languages (ASAL) project addresses this …

Background and aims

Intra-individual variability in language performance has been proposed as a factor associated with treatment outcomes in chronic aphasia. However, the nature of linguistic variability and the degree to which it informs therapeutic success remains poorly understood. In this study, we sought to (1) assess person- and item-level factors associated with naming variability, practice effects, and item-based inconsistencies, (2) determine the relation between intra-individual naming variability, practice effects, and item-based inconsistencies at baseline and treatment outcome in aphasia, and (3) determine the treatment impact on the change in variability and consistency of naming responses.

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Background: Somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2), a G protein-coupled receptor, is overexpressed in multiple malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While SSTR2 has traditionally been viewed as an inhibitory receptor involved in suppressing hormone secretion and cell proliferation, emerging evidence suggests a more complex role in cancer biology. However, the functional implications of SSTR2 expression in HCC remain poorly understood. This study aimed to systematically investigate the molecular landscape associated with SSTR2 expression in HCC and evaluate its potential as a therapeutic target.

Methods: SSTR2 expression patterns across 22 tumor types were assessed using TNMplot, and its expression in HCC was further …

Through these methods, critical insights are gained into how entanglement, topology, and chain architecture govern bulk material performance. The first …

An Exploration Of Temporally Differentiated Associations Between Alcohol Outlets, Social Disorganization, And Assaults: A Multilevel Approach, Jinuk Jeong, Yunho Yeom Sep 2025

An Exploration Of Temporally Differentiated Associations Between Alcohol Outlets, Social Disorganization, And Assaults: A Multilevel Approach, Jinuk Jeong, Yunho Yeom

Publications and Research

A substantial body of research consistently shows that the concentration of alcohol outlets is positively associated with violent crimes, such as assaults. While recent studies have incorporated both spatial and temporal dimensions of this relationship, particularly within-day variations, how this temporally differentiated association of alcohol outlets with violent crimes varies depending on the broader context, such as social disorganization, remains underexplored. This study addresses this research gap by investigating whether the relationship between alcohol outlets and assaults in New York City from 2017 to 2019 differs by time of the day, while accounting for neighborhood structures in terms of their …

Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery: The Noninvasive Presurgical Evaluation, Deepankar Mohanty, Michael Quach

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Drug-resistant epilepsy is a debilitating condition that afflicts individuals across all demographics, including children. The only recourse for many of these individuals is neurosurgery to reduce seizure burden, by either resecting or ablating the cerebral source or modulating it with a stimulator device. In either case, a thorough presurgical evaluation is required to identify brain regions of interest and construct an appropriate surgical plan. The scope of this evaluation has grown rapidly over the years as new and refined techniques have emerged. The aim of this article was to condense the most salient points regarding investigational tools used commonly …

Potential For Therapeutic Alteration Of The Underlying Biology Of Epilepsy, Michael R. Sperling, Jurriaan M. Peters, Qian Wu, Michelle Guignet, H. Steve White, Evelyn K. Shih, Leock Y. Ngo, Enrique Carrazana, Adrian L. Rabinowicz

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Approximately 30-35% of people with epilepsy experience seizures despite taking antiseizure medications. Recurrent seizures that are independent of status epilepticus can be associated with neuronal injury and structural changes to the brain, as well as diminished cognitive function, mood, and quality of life. A treatment that alters the underlying biology of epilepsy, thereby reducing the seizure burden and its attendant consequences, would be of great value in preventing these detrimental effects. In this review, we summarize preclinical and clinical research on pharmacological treatments that may favorably alter the underlying biology of epilepsy (i.e., disease modification or antiepileptogenesis). A reduction in …
