Storied Narratives Of Partners Of Those Who Underwent A Prostatectomy, Meredith Anne Ford, Darpan Patel Sep 2025

Storied Narratives Of Partners Of Those Who Underwent A Prostatectomy, Meredith Anne Ford, Darpan Patel

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of death. Despite this statistic, PCa also has a high survival rate when caught early. A radical prostatectomy (RP) is one of several treatment options and has two main adverse effects: erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Based on these adverse effects, PCa is perceived as a “couple’s disease.” Therefore, this study aimed to understand the storied narratives of a partner and their relationship with their loved one who has undergone an RP. With a PCa diagnosis and surgical treatment, partners may experience higher …

There Are No Words: What Do You Call A Parent Who Has Lost A Child, Sandra K. Cesario Sep 2025

There Are No Words: What Do You Call A Parent Who Has Lost A Child, Sandra K. Cesario

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: There is no commonly used English word to describe a parent whose child is deceased. A child who has no parents is an orphan and a person who has lost a spouse is a widow(er). Absence of terminology to describe parents after the death of a child may contribute to difficulty in adapting to a new identity and alter societal expectations for grieving. Vilomah, a word borrowed from the Sanskrit language meaning "against the natural order," has emerged in non-nursing literature to describe a parent whose child has died. It is derived from the concept that parents …

Purpose: This study evaluated the efficacy of cardiac telerehabilitation in cardiovascular risk profile of CAD patients.

Methods: A systematic review of using PICO keywords, P: coronary artery disease, I: cardiac telerehabilitation, C: center-based cardiac rehabilitation, O: cardiovascular risk profile (body mass index, waist circumference, cholesterol, triglycerides), was used to search English and Chinese articles from 2019 to 2024 in Cochrane library, PubMed, CINAHL, and Chinese Electronic Periodical Services. Ten randomized controlled …

The Potential Benefits Of Co-Design In Dog-Assisted Treatment Programs For Veterans Seeking Mental Health Care, Parvin (Pary) Bahmanyari, Pauleen Bennett, Tiffani Howell Sep 2025

The Potential Benefits Of Co-Design In Dog-Assisted Treatment Programs For Veterans Seeking Mental Health Care, Parvin (Pary) Bahmanyari, Pauleen Bennett, Tiffani Howell

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Veterans are more likely than the general population to experience a range of mental health problems. While many veteran mental health support programs are available, veterans may struggle to access and engage with these services for various reasons (e.g., a stigmatized perception of mental health disorders, mistrust). Animal-assisted services have become more popular in civilian and military health care settings where traditional therapies (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) may not always be effective. Assistance dogs, for example, which live with veterans to provide disability support, have been successfully employed for veteran mental health. Unfortunately, a subgroup of veterans may miss out …

#Falseflag: Exploring Themes In Conspiracy Theory Tweets Regarding The Robb Elementary School Active Shooter Event, Madison K. Doyle, Carolyn Willis

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Little is known about the content of conspiratorial posts on social media, specifically regarding active shooter events. This study explores the content of conspiracy theory tweets during the six months following the active shooter event at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. 194 tweets were analyzed. The analysis resulted in two main themes: False Flag and Hypothesized Reasoning. These themes represent the similarities and variations in content among the tweets. In line with research suggesting that people are most vulnerable to conspiratorial thinking when trying to explain unusual and unsettling events, results indicate that many posts were attempting to provide …

Tribal Sovereign Immunity: Absolute Authority Or Accountability, Kekek Jason Stark Sep 2025

Tribal Sovereign Immunity: Absolute Authority Or Accountability, Kekek Jason Stark

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In the wake of the recent United States Supreme Court decision of Trump v. United States, the Court determined that the President as Chief Executive is immune from conduct associated with official acts.3 The question that emanates from this opinion is how will this decision affect Indian Country and tribal court determinations of tribal sovereign immunity? This article will attempt to address this question. I begin with the Anishinaabe story of Bebaamosed miinawaa Gawigoshko’iweshiinh (The Trickster and the Little Scary Bird)5 in an attempt to understand the complicated nature of tribal sovereign immunity.

Discovering The Doctrine Of Discovery, Douglas Lind Sep 2025

Discovering The Doctrine Of Discovery, Douglas Lind

Public Land & Resources Law Review

The doctrine of discovery is a concept in crisis. A principle of public international law associated with the so-called Age of Discovery, the doctrine of discovery is commonly said to have authorized European nations to claim the lands of indigenous peoples and establish settlements on the basis of “discovery” alone. Today, with good reason, the doctrine is widely condemned. The United Nations has denounced it as “the very foundation of genocide.” Describing its manifest injustices against indigenous cultures, dominion, and sovereignty as “devastating, far-reaching and intergenerational,” the UN Economic and Social Council has called for the doctrine to be categorically …

Uses And Abuses Of Johnson V. M’Intosh In Native American Land Rights Cases: Investigative Insights From The Indian Law Justice Files, John P. Lavelle Sep 2025

Uses And Abuses Of Johnson V. M’Intosh In Native American Land Rights Cases: Investigative Insights From The Indian Law Justice Files, John P. Lavelle

Public Land & Resources Law Review

The 200th anniversary of the foundational Indian law decision Johnson v. M’Intosh has come and gone, with many scholars contributing criticism and commentary. The dominant focus has been the case’s notorious embrace of the so-called “doctrine of discovery,” an odious theory for rationalizing European nations’ claims of superior rights to lands occupied by Indigenous Native American peoples. Commanding less attention, however, is the Johnson decision’s core protective legal feature, i.e., its reinforcing the United States government’s duty to guard against the alienation of Indian lands through private, unauthorized acquisitions.

Self-Authorship And Student Outcomes – A Mixed Methods Study, Rue Ratray Sep 2025

Self-Authorship And Student Outcomes – A Mixed Methods Study, Rue Ratray

Educational Studies Dissertations

There are a relatively small number of schools in Massachusetts that produce strong growth in student outcomes in a given year. Having a clear understanding of the characteristics of these schools allows other schools to improve outcomes for all students. The purpose of this research study was to identify the characteristics of these schools with a specific focus on the schools that produce strong gains in student growth with large percentages of students who are designated as low income. A mixed methods study, which combined secondary data analysis and a case study was used. Secondary data analysis was used to …

Access To Algorithmic Justice Working Paper: Introducing The A2aj’S Canadian Legal Data: An Open-Source Alternative To Canlii For The Era Of Computational Law, Simon Wallace, Sean Rehaag Sep 2025

Access To Algorithmic Justice Working Paper: Introducing The A2aj’S Canadian Legal Data: An Open-Source Alternative To Canlii For The Era Of Computational Law, Simon Wallace, Sean Rehaag

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

The Access to Algorithmic Justice project (A2AJ) is an open-source alternative to the Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII). At a moment when technology promises to enable new ways of working with law, CanLII is becoming an impediment to the free access of law and access to justice movements because it restricts bulk and programmatic access to Canadian legal data. This means that Canada is staring down a digital divide: wellresourced actors have the best new technological tools and, because CanLII has disclaimed leadership, the public only gets second-rate tools. This article puts CanLII in its larger historical context and shows …

Disaster Resilience And Normalization: Facing Facts, Naomi Zack Phd Sep 2025

Disaster Resilience And Normalization: Facing Facts, Naomi Zack Phd

Publications and Research

Disaster resilience requires acknowledgment and preparation to be normalized or integrated into normal life. But denial without preparation normalizes disaster by  leaving it out of normal life. In Disaster Resilience and Normalization: Facing Facts, Naomi Zack explores the normative and factual dimensions of a Climate Change Paradigm, through a global scope. Apart from the normative issues of who is responsible and who should pay for mitigation, the facts of Rising Average Earth Temperatures and more Intense and Frequent Disasters must still be faced.

But facing those facts has always been voluntary for powerful signatories to the 2015 Paris Climate …

Affirming Connections: Understanding The Factors That Cultivate Supportive Relationships For Latine Students And High School Staff, Ivelis Macaruso Sep 2025

Affirming Connections: Understanding The Factors That Cultivate Supportive Relationships For Latine Students And High School Staff, Ivelis Macaruso

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

Latine students have increased steadily in the United States. This population brings rich experiences and strengths to their school communities. However, such strengths are often overlooked in the development of individual practices and institutional policies to better support Latine student wellbeing. Research suggests that supportive relationships between students and school staff promote positive academic outcomes and student wellbeing. Yet, the factors that promote supportive relationships among Latine students are not well understood. This qualitative dissertation examined Latine students’ experiences of both impactful factors and barriers to supportive relationships with school staff through the lens of critical race theory (CRT), Latina/o …

Quality Improvement Project Optimization Of Bed Capacity Management At A Tertiary Pediatric Facility, Barbara M. Stewart Sep 2025

Quality Improvement Project Optimization Of Bed Capacity Management At A Tertiary Pediatric Facility, Barbara M. Stewart

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Emergency department (ED) overcrowding can be defined as a circumstance in which the number of patients seeking care has exceeded the resources available. ED overcrowding can have significant negative impacts on patient safety, quality of care, and hospital finances. The use of an ED saturation measurement is supported by research and widely used in adult emergency departments. The quality improvement project evaluated the correlation between a modified National Emergency Department Crowding Scale (mNEDOCS) and established ED metrics- length of stay (LOS) and left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rates. The intervention was guided by the revised Iowa Model and the Model for Improvement, both …

Synthesis Of Mindful Inspiration, Syncretism, And Unionism Yields The Mind Method For Alleviating Public School Teacher Burnout, Walt Durand Sep 2025

Synthesis Of Mindful Inspiration, Syncretism, And Unionism Yields The Mind Method For Alleviating Public School Teacher Burnout, Walt Durand

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Public school teachers face the risk of burnout. Mindfulness has been suggested for addressing the chronic stress that can lead to teacher burnout. However, criticisms have been raised regarding the sometimes problematic nature of mindfulness programs (MPs) for public school teachers. For example, MPs may be perceived as religious and therefore not appropriate for secular public schools. Additionally, MPs may not be designed with enough of an ethical framework and may not do enough to authentically help teachers address the systemic challenges they face. In response to these limitations, this paper suggests the synthesis of the following MP enhancements to …

A Step-By-Step Guide To Incorporating Mindfulness Into The Adult Esol Classroom, Olivia Grage

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This paper examines how adults in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes could benefit from the integration of mindfulness principles and/or the teaching of mindfulness in the classroom and culminates in a step-by-step guide. The guidebook outlines key principles for introducing mindfulness in the adult ESOL context and includes example practices, pedagogical considerations, and suggestions for further reading, designed to support teachers with varying levels of experience in mindfulness. The adult ESOL classroom in the United States is a space where migrants, immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers (here referred to collectively as immigrants and refugees) can seek out resources …
