Examining Perceived Leadership Effectiveness Among Secular And Christ-Centered Leaders, Koljonna S. Lewis Sep 2025

Examining Perceived Leadership Effectiveness Among Secular And Christ-Centered Leaders, Koljonna S. Lewis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Successful leadership has been studied extensively and several theories of effective leadership exist. Though there are many leadership theories that provide explanations for leader behaviors and outcomes, this study aimed to explore effective leadership that is Christ-centered and inspired by Christian faith. Research has shown that the success or failure of an organization is often dependent upon its leadership and the leader’s ability to be effective. This study proposed that the most effective leadership is reliant upon a relationship with God and an understanding of His Word. Therefore, this study examined how leaders who have Christ-centered or secular worldviews describe …

Synthetic Social Engineering Scenario Generation Using Llms For Awareness-Based Attack Resilience, Jade Webb, Faranak Abri, Sayma Akther

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Social engineering is found in a strong majority of cyberattacks today, as it is a powerful manipulation tactic that does not require the technical skills of hacking. Calculated social engineers utilize simple communication to deceive and exploit their victims, all by capitalizing on the vulnerabilities of human nature: trust and fear. When successful, this inconspicuous technique can lead to millions of dollars in losses. Social engineering is not a one-dimensional technique; criminals often leverage a combination of strategies to craft a robust yet subtle attack. In addition, offenders are continually evolving their methods in efforts to surpass preventive measures. A …

Approach To Ophthalmic Surgery Involving The Anterior Vitreous: A Clinical Practice Update From The American Society Of Retina Specialists, Matthew R Starr, Christina Y Weng, Lejla Vajzovic, Kevin J Blinder, Judy E Kim, J Michael Jumper

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

When encountering diseases of the anterior vitreous and peripheral retina (ie, the "middle segment" of the eye), vitreoretinal (VR) surgeons are specifically trained in surgical techniques for managing the vitreous and visualizing the peripheral retina during anterior vitrectomy, and therefore they are well equipped to address the complications of surgery involving the anterior vitreous space. This clinical update reviews and compares the current literature discussing techniques and patient outcomes related to complete pars plana vitrectomy versus incomplete, subtotal pars plana vitrectomy, and addresses the proposition of developing an abridged training curriculum for non-VR surgeons to acquire the knowledge and skills …

Osteosarcoma, the most common childhood bone tumor, can occur in rare cancer predisposition syndromes; however, most cases are sporadic with no known predisposing factors. We investigated the frequency of SMARCAL1 putative pathogenic variants in our large ongoing study of 2,119 osteosarcoma cases, their relation to patient characteristics, and the population prevalence. Our analysis uncovered a higher frequency of SMARCAL1 pathogenic variants across three osteosarcoma case sets (1.8%, n = 2,119) than in 2,625 comparably sequenced cancer-free controls (0.3%; P <  .001). Cases with SMARCAL1 pathogenic variants had significantly improved overall survival compared to cases without these variants (hazard ratio 0.36, 95% CI 0.14-0.96, P = .034). In the UK Biobank (469,557 exomes), there was a 33-fold increased risk of osteosarcoma in individuals with SMARCAL1 pathogenic variants. These results identify SMARCAL1 as a new osteosarcoma predisposition gene and thus warrant follow-up to identify the mechanisms by which SMARCAL1 contributes to the etiology of osteosarcoma.

Lysosomes Signal Through The Epigenome To Regulate Longevity Across Generations, Qinghao Zhang, Weiwei Dang, Meng C Wang Sep 2025

Lysosomes Signal Through The Epigenome To Regulate Longevity Across Generations, Qinghao Zhang, Weiwei Dang, Meng C Wang

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The epigenome is sensitive to metabolic inputs and crucial for aging. Lysosomes act as a signaling hub to sense metabolic cues and regulate longevity. We find that lysosomal metabolic pathways signal through the epigenome to regulate transgenerational longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans. Activation of lysosomal lipid signaling and lysosomal adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) or reduction of lysosomal mechanistic-target-of-rapamycin (mTOR) signaling increased expression of a histone H3.3 variant and increased its methylation on K79, leading to lifespan extension across multiple generations. This transgenerational pro-longevity effect required intestine-to-germline transportation of histone H3.3 and a germline-specific H3K79 methyltransferase, and was recapitulated by …

Mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) gene rearrangements cause ~75% of acute leukemia in infants and 5-10% in children and adults with poor clinical outcomes. Protein-protein interactions (PPI) between frequent MLL fusion partners AF9/ENL and AF4 or histone methyltransferase DOT1L are drug targets for MLL-rearranged (MLL-r) leukemia. Sixty-seven quinoxiline compounds were synthesized and tested for their ability to inhibit such PPIs. Compounds 16, 17, 59 and 63 were found to be potent inhibitors with IC50 values of 0.35-1.5 μM. Structure-activity relationships are discussed. Potent inhibitors can suppress expression of MLL target genes Myc and Meis1 and selectively block proliferation of MLL-r and …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Strong evidence reveals that a more diverse U.S. healthcare workforce enhances care delivery, promotes culturally responsive care, expands access to healthcare, and helps reduce disparities among underrepresented populations.1 The limited presence of Black nurses in frontline leadership roles has a profound impact on nursing and healthcare, limiting opportunities to improve resources, attract diverse talent, and maintain a workforce that reflects the communities it serves.2 The extent to which Black nurses are motivated to lead is not known.

Purpose: The purpose of this literature review was to understand the prevalence of motivation to lead among Black nurses, …

The Sibling Experience Of Pediatric Patients Discharged From The Picu: Qualitative Meta-Synthesis, Jessica Keller Sep 2025

The Sibling Experience Of Pediatric Patients Discharged From The Picu: Qualitative Meta-Synthesis, Jessica Keller

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

A QMS was conducted to describe the sibling experiences of children discharged from the PICU to promote future research of the sibling experience and identify interventions for sibling support. The research question was: what are the experiences of siblings of children discharged from the PICU?

When a child is in the PICU, the family must face life-threatening diagnoses and difficult decisions. This stress impacts family dynamics shared by parents and children (Rennick et al., 2021). Siblings may assume additional responsibilities without having the support of their parents. Manning et al. (2017) identified siblings have unmet needs that are not fully …

Validation Of The Affiliate Stigma Scale For Asian Indian American Dementia Family Caregivers, Anju Wadhawan, Rula Btoush, Peijia Zha, Olga F. Jarrin

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background/Purpose: The Affiliate Stigma Scale is a commonly used instrument for measuring stigma experienced by caregivers of persons with intellectual disabilities and mental illness (Mak & Cheung, 2008). It is particularly relevant within the Asian Indian community, where dementia may sometimes be considered a punishment for past life sins of the patient or their loved ones (Chenug et al., 2019; Hossain & Khan 2019; Hussain et al., 2024; Krishnamurthi et al., 2022). Building on prior work to culturally adapt the affiliate stigma scale for Asian Indian American dementia family caregivers, this study aims to assess the reliability and validity of …

Best Practices For Nurse Practitioners Caring For Patients With Non-English Language Preference, Jaypee Benitez Buhisan, Donna Martin, Elsie Duff, Terilyn Hunter Sep 2025

Best Practices For Nurse Practitioners Caring For Patients With Non-English Language Preference, Jaypee Benitez Buhisan, Donna Martin, Elsie Duff, Terilyn Hunter

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Communication is paramount in any provider-patient relationship. In nurse practitioner roles, health teachings are provided to prevent and manage illnesses and promote health. Language discordance between patients and providers is a significant barrier for persons with Non-English Language Preference (NELP). Patients with NELP tend to delay accessing healthcare services, which is a challenge for primary care providers to perform their role as promoters of health. The purpose of our work was to describe best practices for nurse practitioners caring for persons with NELP. A narrative review of the literature was conducted, with librarian consultation. We used keywords, and MeSH terms …

Spices On The Winds Of Trade: The Postcolonial Geopolitics Of Food In Amitav Ghosh’S Fiction And Non-Fiction, Suhasini Vincent Sep 2025

Spices On The Winds Of Trade: The Postcolonial Geopolitics Of Food In Amitav Ghosh’S Fiction And Non-Fiction, Suhasini Vincent

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

In The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis, Amitav Ghosh traces the journey of spices from the Spice Islands, or the Moluccas in Indonesia to Europe. Nestled between Celebes and New Guinea, these islands with their rich volcanic soil, emerged as the epicentre of global spice production, offering the world mace, nutmeg, cloves, and pepper in the 16th century. The nutmeg’s two hemispheres hold hidden meaning in today’s world: one shell portraying its commercial merits as a spice and the other elusive crust remaining open to interpretation. The inconspicuous nutmeg, a coveted spice during the ‘Spice Race’, …

Facilitating The Move Towards A Wellbeing Economy Through Supporting Infrastructure: A Review Of Frontrunner Countries, Henry Bartelet, Vincent De Gooyert Sep 2025

Facilitating The Move Towards A Wellbeing Economy Through Supporting Infrastructure: A Review Of Frontrunner Countries, Henry Bartelet, Vincent De Gooyert

Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications

As more governments seek to shift beyond gross domestic product (GDP) as the dominant measure of progress, the concept of a “wellbeing economy” has gained traction. This approach prioritizes human and environmental wellbeing through broader, more holistic policy frameworks. A central question in this transition is what the implications of shifts to a wellbeing economy are for infrastructure investments. In this study, we identify four frontrunner governments, Bhutan, Scotland, New Zealand, and Wales, that have formally adopted wellbeing economy principles. We analyse how each operationalizes the concept and assess the resulting implications for infrastructure planning and investment. Despite shared goals, …

The Living Dead On Mount Athos: Monastic Politics Of Escape, Patrick Reilly Sep 2025

The Living Dead On Mount Athos: Monastic Politics Of Escape, Patrick Reilly

Dissertations and Theses

The Monastic Republic of Mount Athos is a unique and confounding political entity - both Greek and multi-national, democratic and theocratic, autonomous and subject to the European Union - with more than a millennia of history and institutional memory. While Athos has been amply appreciated for its religious, historical and cultural significance, the political institutions which govern this community have been neglected in the modern era and merit greater attention. Similarly, while much of the recent English-language literature on the topic focuses on the near-death and miraculous resurrection of Mount Athos in the 20th century, this work also tends to …

Enhancing Patient Understanding And Reducing Readmissions: Implementing A Structured Discharge Teaching Protocol In A Medical-Surgical Unit, Jawany Joseph Sep 2025

Enhancing Patient Understanding And Reducing Readmissions: Implementing A Structured Discharge Teaching Protocol In A Medical-Surgical Unit, Jawany Joseph

DNP Projects

Background

Hospital readmissions remain a critical challenge in healthcare, especially in medical-surgical units. The high rates of hospital readmissions are often linked to inadequate patient understanding of discharge instructions. Many patients struggle with deciphering discharge plans, leading to medication errors, missed follow-up appointments, and poor self-care management. A structured discharge teaching protocol has the potential to enhance patient comprehension, improve adherence to port-discharge care, and reduce readmission rates.

Project Goals

This project aimed to improve understanding of discharge instructions, reduce hospital readmissions, and enhance patient satisfaction with the discharge process. Specific objectives included increasing patient comprehension from 65% to 90% …
