INTRODUCTION: Life-support limits (i.e., code status), the first step in the continuum of palliation and end-of-life (EoL) care, stem from decisions made by patients and their providers to align care near the EoL with patients' wishes. The pandemic created health care strain that may have influenced life-support limitation practices among patients with serious COVID-19. In this study, we examine variations in life-support limitations (do-not-resuscitate, DNR; do-not-intubate, DNI) depending on the hospital and period of hospitalization.

METHODS: We included all adults admitted to a hospital in the United States with COVID-19 from January 2020 to December 2021 using the VIRUS registry. …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Pancreatic/PKR-like endoplasmic reticulum (ER) kinase (PERK) is a kinase that, in response to ER stress, mediates dual homeostatic and pro-apoptotic signaling. Thus, intricate regulation is required for physiological function. Attempts to modulate PERK activity have shown that the determinants of adaptive vs. maladaptive signaling remain ambiguous. Here, with purified protein, we provide evidence that PERK binds copper, identifies residues required for interaction, and demonstrates that copper is necessary for kinase activity. Furthermore, cellular PERK activity can be modulated via copper availability, and this regulatory relationship can be manipulated to dictate ER stress tolerance. Critically, these phenomena translate to phenotypes in …

Constructions Of Compact Dupin Hypersurfaces With Non-Constant Lie Curvatures, Thomas E. Cecil

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

A hypersurface M in the unit sphere Sn ⊂ Rn+1 is Dupin if along each curvature surface of M, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. If the number g of distinct principal curvatures is constant on M, then M is called proper Dupin. In this expository paper, we give a detailed description of two important types of constructions of compact proper Dupin hypersurfaces in Sn. One construction was published in 1989 by Pinkall and Thorbergsson [35], and the second was published in 1989 by Miyaoka and Ozawa [26]. Both types of examples have the …

Trcaptionnet++: A High-Performance Encoder-Decoder Based Deep Turkish Image Captioning Model Fine-Tuned With A Large-Scale Set Of Pretrain Data, Serdar Yildiz, Abbas Memi̇ş, Songül Varli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a novel and high-performance encoder-decoder-based deep model called TRCaption Net++ for generic Turkish image captioning tasks. The proposed model is an improved and refined version of TRCap tionNet, which essentially employs a CLIP (contrastive language–image pretraining) image encoder, a feature projection layer and a BERT (bidirectional encoder representations from transformers) text decoder. Within the scope of the study, the regular TRCaptionNet model was trained and specifically fine-tuned with a massive set of image data. In this respect, approximately 2,000,000 random images representing the words in the MS COCO and Flickr caption sets were retrieved through web crawling …

Industries, Self-Rated Health, And Status Characteristics: An Exploration Of Health In Industries At The Intersection Of Race/Ethnicity, Gender, And Disability, Emmanuel Legarreta Sep 2025

Industries, Self-Rated Health, And Status Characteristics: An Exploration Of Health In Industries At The Intersection Of Race/Ethnicity, Gender, And Disability, Emmanuel Legarreta

Dissertations and Theses

While industries, occupations, and health outcomes have been widely studied, research has neglected self-rated health (SRH) and the intersectionality of different status characteristics in various industries. Using an IPUMS version of the Current Population Survey, this study explores the possible relationships between industries and SRH. More specifically, it seeks to find if workers' disability status, racial minority status, or gender moderates (i.e., differentiates) the relationship between their industry and SRH. Findings show that certain industries are significant predictors of SRH, and that women with disabilities working in Mining and Construction, and Business and Repair Service have significantly worse SRH than …

Relationship Between Alcohol Use And Obesity In Us Adults Aged 20 To 79, Chinwendu Echefu, Ramona Stone Sep 2025

Relationship Between Alcohol Use And Obesity In Us Adults Aged 20 To 79, Chinwendu Echefu, Ramona Stone

Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Purpose: This is a secondary data analysis carried out to determine the asso- ciation between alcohol use and obesity (BMI) in US adults aged 20 to 79 while adjusting for confounding factors that are known to affect obesity. Methods: The 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was utilized to provide a weighted sample of 16,548 adults between the ages of 20 and 79 with valid information for the BMI and for the average alcohol con- sumed per day over the past 12 months. Multivariable regression was done to determine the association between obesity, measured by the Body Mass …

Police Killings In The Mountain West, 2013-2023, Isabelle G. Graham, Olivia K. Cheche, Caitlin J. Saladino, William E. Brown Jr.

Criminal Justice

This fact sheet presents data on police killings between 2013 and 2023 for the five Mountain West states of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The Brookings Institution report, “The state of police reform: measuring progress in each state,” tracks the total number of killings by police and the number of killings by police per one million residents in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. This fact sheet reports data on the total number of people killed by police and the rate of police killings per capita for each Mountain West state.

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Clinicians currently lack an effective means for identifying youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who are at risk for experiencing glycemic deterioration between diabetes clinic visits. As a result, their ability to identify youth who may optimally benefit from targeted interventions designed to address rising glycemic levels is limited. Although electronic health records (EHR)-based risk predictions have been used to forecast health outcomes in T1D, no study has investigated the potential for using EHR data to identify youth with T1D who will experience a clinically significant rise in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥0.3% (approximately 3 mmol/mol) between diabetes clinic visits. …
