A Political Meeting Lost In Translation: Cross-Lingual Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis Of How English, Turkish, And Russian Media Frame The Same Syria-Trump Meeting, Murathan Kocaman, Kirill Sidorko Oct 2025

A Political Meeting Lost In Translation: Cross-Lingual Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis Of How English, Turkish, And Russian Media Frame The Same Syria-Trump Meeting, Murathan Kocaman, Kirill Sidorko

IPHS 391: Interdisciplinary AI Frontiers

We examine how three newspapers in different languages (New York Times in English, Sözcü in Turkish, and NurKZ in Russian) frame the same Syria Trump meeting using aspect based sentiment analysis. Each article was segmented into sentences (NYT 67, NurKZ 40, Sözcü 26), with Turkish and Russian sentences translated into English while preserving the original text for reference. We applied an LLM based ABSA labeler constrained to a fixed set of predefined aspects, allowing us to compare sentiment at the level of specific themes rather than overall tone. Our analysis focuses on four high contrast aspects: sanctions and the Caesar …

Forbidden Knowledge: School Libraries, The First Amendment, And The Right To Receive Information, Natalie H. Berg Oct 2025

Forbidden Knowledge: School Libraries, The First Amendment, And The Right To Receive Information, Natalie H. Berg

Washington Law Review

In the past five years, numerous Republican legislators and conservative parental groups have aggressively pushed to restrict sexual content in public schools. Many school districts have adopted policies that limit what topics are covered in class, and several statewide laws have legitimized and mandated these policies. Consequently, books featuring queer themes or characters are rapidly disappearing from public school libraries. These library restrictions, or book bans, have sparked substantial controversy and litigation.

This Comment examines state laws restricting public school libraries in Texas, Florida, and Iowa, arguing that these library restrictions violate the First Amendment on multiple grounds. Additionally, it …

Making Youth Matter, Kimberly Ambrose Oct 2025

Making Youth Matter, Kimberly Ambrose

Washington Law Review

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. The harm caused by this public health crisis falls disproportionately on Black and Brown youth. While it is broadly accepted that children are less blameworthy than adults for their criminal behavior, what does this mean when they have access to and use guns? The Supreme Court held that youth matters when juveniles face life without parole sentences because children are different from adults—they fail to appreciate risks and consequences; are more impulsive; more susceptible to peer and family influence; less able to remove themselves …

Another Broken Promise: The Mmiwg2s Crisis And The Violation Of The Federal Indian Trust Obligation, Marley Forest Oct 2025

Another Broken Promise: The Mmiwg2s Crisis And The Violation Of The Federal Indian Trust Obligation, Marley Forest

Washington Law Review

Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people go missing and are murdered at rates nearly ten times the national average in the United States. This disproportionate epidemic of violence has been labeled the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S) crisis. Several factors exacerbate this crisis. First, European colonizers used violence against Native people, especially women and Two-Spirit people, as a tactic of control and domination since first contact in the 1600s. Second, nearly two hundred years of legislative actions and case law have effectively stripped Native Nations of all criminal jurisdictional power over crimes committed on their land …

Rethinking Courtroom Presence In The Virtual Era, Jenia Iontcheva Turner Oct 2025

Rethinking Courtroom Presence In The Virtual Era, Jenia Iontcheva Turner

Indiana Law Journal

Technological innovation has made virtual appearances by criminal defendants increasingly common. These appearances have advanced efficiency but also raised questions about the scope of both the right and the duty of defendants to be physically present in court. Should judges, for example, be allowed to hold virtual arraignments, even if a defendant wishes to appear in person? Can defendants opt for virtual appearances at will? While courts are beginning to address these questions, they have yet to develop a coherent framework to evaluate when virtual appearances are constitutional and appropriate. This Article seeks to contribute to this project by examining …

The Pastor As Romantic Author: Ai, Preaching, And The Unacknowledged Inheritance Of Authenticity, Daniel Plate, James Hutson Oct 2025

The Pastor As Romantic Author: Ai, Preaching, And The Unacknowledged Inheritance Of Authenticity, Daniel Plate, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article interrogates contemporary reactions to sermons produced with generative technologies through a historical–conceptual lens, arguing that widespread judgments of such outputs as “soulless,” “generic,” or lacking a “beating heart” are best explained by an unacknowledged inheritance from nineteenth-century Romantic expressivism. Rather than treating resistance to machine authorship as a theological verdict on computational incapacity, the study reconstructs how Romanticism centered authorship in sincere self-expression and solitary genius, displacing earlier heraldic expectations that prized fidelity to a received message. Methodologically, the analysis combines intellectual history with discourse analysis of global Christian experiments in synthetic composition (2020–2025), denominational guidance, and media …

The Erasure And Resilience Of Tionghoa-Indonesian Culture And Identity, John Hines-Shah Oct 2025

The Erasure And Resilience Of Tionghoa-Indonesian Culture And Identity, John Hines-Shah

Indonesia: Arts, Religion, and Social Change

Indonesia is home to the largest diaspora of Chinese people anywhere in the world. Yet, the experiences of Chinese-Indonesians reveal a sustained erasure, discrimination, and pressure to assimilate in the face of political and social tensions. Under Dutch colonial rule, they were placed in a racial hierarchy, placed between Europeans and Indigenous Indonesians, yet excluded from full participation in either group. This structure planted early seeds of mistrust and scapegoating that endured into the post-independence period. After 1945, state policies often sought to assimilate Chinese-Indonesians, restricting cultural expression, closing Chinese-language schools, and encouraging or even requiring the adoption of Indonesian-sounding …

The Esg Paradox: Systemic Resistance And The Crisis Of Corporate Governance, Tawia Ansah Oct 2025

The Esg Paradox: Systemic Resistance And The Crisis Of Corporate Governance, Tawia Ansah

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

This Article examines a recent lawsuit between ExxonMobil Corporation and its shareholders that contested the definition of “ordinary business operations” under Rule 14a-8 of the Securities & Exchange Act of 1934. Through the lens of Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory particularly his concept of “operational closure,” the analysis reveals how corporate resistance to ESG initiatives reflects deeper systemic patterns in late capitalist governance.

ESG frameworks emerged as a challenge to neoliberal corporate governance, promising to address mounting environmental and social concerns. However, the neoliberal model has responded by both absorbing ESG through “greenwashing” and rejecting its more transformative elements—a pattern that …

SKMC Student Presentations and Publications

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States. Since 1990, the prevalence of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) has been steadily increasing.1 NCCN guidelines recommend complete excision of NMSC to preserve function and optimize aesthetic outcomes.2 The gold standard surgical treatment is Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) with a reported cure rate of 99-100%.3 However, MMS requires specialized training and thus is more geographically and financially limited. The traditional technique utilized for skin cancer removal is intraoperative frozen section assessment (IFSA). IFSA is a common histopathological technique that facilitates microscopic …

Extreme Prison Sentences: Legal And Normative Consequences, Melissa Hamilton

Cardozo Law Review

The article examines the phenomenon of extreme sentences—defined as those exceeding 200 years—in the federal criminal justice system, raising critical questions about their rationale, proportionality, and alignment with traditional theories of punishment. Through an empirical study of 55 such cases, the analysis highlights the role of mandatory minimums, cognitive biases, and an exclusionist mindset in driving these sentences. It critiques the normalization of extreme penalties and their implications for mass incarceration, deterrence, and human dignity.
