Impact Of Systematic Classification And Identification Of Treatment Methods Of Mine Tailings On Concrete Durability, Berika Ceren Cihan Yilmaz, Ceren Ince, Demetrios M. Cotsovos, Richard James Ball
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The rapid increase in mine tailings generation poses significant environmental challenges, with current disposal methods often unsustainable and leading to catastrophic failures such as tailing pond collapses or toxic slurry spills, resulting in fatalities and severe environmental damage. The urgency for sustainable construction materials is clear, particularly as the global focus shifts toward net-zero emissions and circular economies. Concrete, a primary construction material, traditionally depends on natural resources, making it imperative to explore alternatives that reduce environmental impacts. Mine tailings, with their rich elemental and oxide composition, present a promising option for partial replacement in concrete. Despite this potential, the …

Structural Behaviour Of Preflex Beams In Bridges During Concrete Repair And Maintenance, Liam Simpson, Imrose Muhit
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Preflex beams are composite structural members that combine a steel universal beam with reinforced concrete, enabling longer spans with reduced deflection. Their strength and stiffness rely on a preflexion process, where the bottom flange is initially placed in tension and later compressed by the surrounding concrete. Despite their advantages, repairing preflex beams, particularly the bottom flange concrete, presents challenges due to its role in load distribution and deflection control. This study investigates the structural behaviour of preflex beams when the bottom flange concrete, an integral component of the load distribution mechanism, is altered during concrete repairs, addressing the need for …

Utilisation Of Semi-Naturally Carbonated Steelmaking Slag As Concrete Aggregate, Sumire Nakamura, Yuichiro Kawabata
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Steelmaking slag has emerged as a promising material for low-carbon concrete, owing to its ability to sequester CO₂ through carbonation. However, CO2 sequestration by steelmaking slag and its utilisation is still far from practical application due to the high energy consumption and cost of the accelerated carbonation process. Anticipating that optimising the pre-natural carbonation during storage would reduce the energy and cost for accelerated carbonation, this study focused on the natural carbonation potential of steelmaking slag. In addition, the applicability of naturally carbonated steelmaking slag as aggregate for concrete was investigated. The long-term exposure experiment simulating outdoor storage demonstrated that …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The growing environmental and safety issues posed by human activities have underlined the importance of Ordinary Portland Cement production, which is a major contributor to carbon dioxide emissions that impede Net Zero goals. The urgent need to produce cement substitutes with reduced carbon footprints has prompted research on geopolymers formed from industrial mineral wastes. These materials provide promising sustainable development solutions, but the selection of appropriate activation methods remains a significant constraint to their widespread industrial and economical application. A systematic review using the PRISMA protocol included 302 recent and relevant papers, identifying four principal activation strategies and their combinations …

I banded 36 Boreal Chickadees (Poecile hudsonicus) and had 27 recaptures for a total of 63 encounters in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1990-1995. Boreal Chickadees mean weight and fat accumulation did not vary between seasons; overall annual mean weight was 11.4 g. During fall and winter measured weight increased during daylight hours, but in summer birds maintained a steady weight throughout the day. Winter weight gain throughout the day was calculated to equal about 11.7% of base body weight. Wing, tail, and tarsal measurement averages and ranges are provided. Body, crown, and remige molt was heaviest in late July and August, …

Timing Of Leg Scale Molt In The Black-Capped Vireo, David A. Cimprich
North American Bird Bander
The podotheca is the scaly covering of the bare portions of bird legs. Although it is known that birds periodically replace these scales, the process has only been described in any detail for two species. The purpose of this investigation was to describe the timing of podothecal molt in the Black-capped Vireo (Vireo atricapilla) in relation to both date and the progress of the prebasic feather molt. I captured these birds throughout the time they were present at a site within their breeding range in central Texas. I noted the presence of leg scale molt and scored the molt of …

Reimagining The Basic Course: Integrating Asian And African Storytelling Traditions In Public Speaking Pedagogy, Dious Joseph
Basic Communication Course Annual
Public speaking courses often reflect Eurocentric rhetorical traditions, focusing on argumentation, logic, and individual presentation styles. This essay proposes a redesign of public speaking curriculum by incorporating storytelling traditions from Asian and African cultures. These traditions emphasize communal narratives, moral lessons, and audience engagement through relatable stories, offering a richer, more inclusive approach. The essay contrasts the communal and narrative-focused traditions of Asian and African storytelling with Western argumentation and rhetoric. It advocates for integrating these storytelling techniques into public speaking courses to make them more representative of global perspectives, benefiting both international and domestic students. Such integration would prevent …
Feeling At Home In The Basic Communication Course: A Qualitative Case Study Of Faculty And Student Perceptions Of A Connected Classroom Climate At One Midwestern University, Cynthia Grobmeier
Basic Communication Course Annual
The concept of a connected classroom climate considers that peer-to-peer interaction, not just instructor-student interaction, contributes to a sense of community in the classroom that can impact student outcomes. This qualitative case study considers both student and instructor perceptions of what contributes to that sense of connection in the classroom at a mid-size, four-year, Hispanic-serving university. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and member checks with students and instructors who engaged in the first-year basic communication course during the Spring 2022 semester. Four themes emerged in this study: a) the communication classroom is uniquely positioned to create a sense of …
