Hannah Webster Foster And Benjamin Franklin: Addressing The Coquette Through The Male And Female Voice, Gianna Vaynberg
Hannah Webster Foster And Benjamin Franklin: Addressing The Coquette Through The Male And Female Voice, Gianna Vaynberg
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
Throughout history, women have carried the weight of social expectations that have been thrust upon them by a patriarchal society, within which men are not held to nearly the same moral standard and scrutiny. This is reflected in both Benjamin Franklin’s and Hannah Webster Foster’s tales of a “coquette” damned by society for becoming pregnant outside of marriage. However, each of these narratives presents readers with a unique picture of a “coquette.” Both “The Speech of Miss Polly Baker” and The Coquette provide criticisms about the archetype of the coquette. However, while The Coquette presents a cautionary tale dissuading young …
Melusine And Yde Et Olive: Subversive Narrative Power In The Medieval Female Body, Anna Prawer
Melusine And Yde Et Olive: Subversive Narrative Power In The Medieval Female Body, Anna Prawer
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper delves into the representation of the female body in Medieval Literature, focusing on the texts of 'Melusine' and 'Yde et Olive'. The paper explores how these two texts represent bodily difference and transformation as a source of subversive narrative power. Rather than functioning merely as symbols of weakness or instability compared to the stable and coherent male body, the female bodies in these texts disrupt social and gender norms, generating new possibilities for identity and narrative authority.
Morality Of Medieval Magic In Medicine, Jacob Mudd
Morality Of Medieval Magic In Medicine, Jacob Mudd
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the late medieval and early Renaissance eras, attitudes towards science, religion, and magic were in upheaval. The Reformation was heavily critiquing Catholicism as being too closely related to magic, there were pushes for leaving long-held beliefs behind in favor of newer science, and society as a whole was in a massive period of change. One of the places all three topics intersect is medicine. Normal medicine during this period was often ineffective, furthering the need for people seek out magical cures, which were in turn often intertwined with religion. By looking at the question of whether it would have …

This paper threads together quantitative data on Black QT students from the HSLS:09 data set, while connecting the authors' lived experiences about the college-going process. According to this data, Black QT high school students were heavily influenced by parents and peers and less influenced by school counselors and teachers regarding decisions about college and post-high school trajectories. In response, we engage in collaborative autoethnography (CAE) to center our narratives as Black QT people by threading our commonalities and differences to highlight what tensions and connections emerged from our experiences with the college-going process to add context to the aforementioned data.

International Journal of Speleology
This study presents the results of a long-term investigation of the microclimatic conditions in Shulgan-Tash Cave (Southern Urals, Russia), which hosts the largest assemblage of Upper Paleolithic paintings (ca. 16.3–19.6 ka) in Eastern Europe. The cave exhibits two distinct seasonal ventilation regimes – winter and summer – differentially influence its two levels of galleries. In the Lower Level, which contains 83% of the images, near-atmospheric CO2 concentrations persist year-round, and temperature variations associated with seasonal infiltration events are minimal (1.0–1.3°C). By contrast, the Upper Level, including the decorated Hall of Paintings, is affected by downdrafts of CO2-rich …
