Think Piece: New South Korean Framework For Conceptualizing Nonkoreans?: Taehanoegugin And The Politics Of National Boundary-Making, Min Joo Lee
Asia Pacific Perspectives
Taehanoegugin is a newly coined Korean term that gained popularity around 2018 when a television program of the same name began airing on one of the Korean cable networks. It is a mixture of two independent and preexisting terms: the first part of the word, Taehan (대한), refers to the Republic of Korea; the latter part of the term, Oegugin (외국인), means foreigner. Hence, translated, the term means the Republic of Korean-foreigners. The term gained popularity enough to be adopted by other television entertainment programs and a sector of the government. What can we make of the term’s popularity? Does …
An Exploration Of Massachusetts Public Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of School-Based Professional Development For Implementing Response To Intervention, Kristina M. Hollender
An Exploration Of Massachusetts Public Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of School-Based Professional Development For Implementing Response To Intervention, Kristina M. Hollender
Doctor of Education Program Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore Massachusetts public middle school teachers’ perceptions of school-based professional development (PD) for implementing Response to Intervention (RtI). This study examined how teachers experienced PD in relation to RtI implementation, including its relevance, structure, and ongoing support. The research was grounded in Knowles’ (1984) adult learning theory, which emphasizes the importance of learner-centered, problem-based, and immediately applicable professional learning for adults. A review of the literature revealed ongoing challenges in the effectiveness of PD to support RtI practices at the middle school level, particularly in areas such as sustained support, teacher …

Perspectives Of Cannabis Farmers On Intersection Of Water Access And Cannabis Frontier Constraints In Southern Oregon, Tapiwa Malvin Chabikwa
Perspectives Of Cannabis Farmers On Intersection Of Water Access And Cannabis Frontier Constraints In Southern Oregon, Tapiwa Malvin Chabikwa
Dissertations and Theses
Cannabis farming and use are being legalized at unprecedented levels by many states in the United States. Oregon was one of the pioneer states to legalize cannabis in 2016. Although it is legalized at the state level (in Oregon), cannabis remains illegal at the federal level. Due to the quasi-legalization of cannabis, an agricultural frontier for marijuana is unfolding. Cannabis farming in Oregon has grown as there is a market and ideal weather climate for the cannabis industry to flourish. This study seeks to understand the challenges cannabis farmers face in accessing water and the socio-economic and political constraints that …
Forfeiture Takings, Police Power, And Necessity Destruction, Shelley Ross Saxer
Forfeiture Takings, Police Power, And Necessity Destruction, Shelley Ross Saxer
University of Miami Law Review
Civil forfeiture laws allow law enforcement to seize property when there is probable cause it has been used or possessed in violation of legal rules, often before an owner has a chance to contest the government’s seizure in court. In the criminal context, forfeiture is typically an in personam action that requires a criminal conviction and is part of a defendant’s sentence. In the civil context, however, forfeiture is an in rem proceeding brought against the property derived from or used to commit an offense––not against the person who committed the offense. As such, a civil forfeiture may not require …

Enabling Coercive Drivers With Green Supply Chain Management Practices To Gain Performance Nexus Through External Collaboration And Monitoring, Aamir Rashid, Rizwana Rasheed
Publications and Research
Businesses primarily provide products or services, expand operations, and generate profits. However, they frequently disregard the environmental and economic consequences of their actions as they strive for profitability and growth. Consequently, the main objective of this research was to examine the impact of a multifaceted supply chain function on performance. Data were collected from 415 respondents employed in various manufacturing companies within a developing economy. The hypotheses were evaluated using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) through Smart PLS. The findings discovered that ten of the thirteen hypotheses tested were supported, while three were not. Coercive drivers were observed to significantly influence …
Crypto In The Courtroom: A Legislative Framework For Managing Crypto Assets In Bankruptcy, Katelyn E. Barker
Crypto In The Courtroom: A Legislative Framework For Managing Crypto Assets In Bankruptcy, Katelyn E. Barker
University of Miami Law Review
The rapid rise and subsequent collapse of the cryptocurrency market exposed a critical shortcoming of bankruptcy law: the absence of clear guidelines for the treatment of crypto assets. The Bankruptcy Code—which predates the invention of crypto—fails to account for the unique complexities of crypto assets. Although several crypto bills have been introduced, they fall short of adequately confronting the complex and evolving challenges of crypto bankruptcies. The lack of guidance has forced courts to make consequential decisions with no clear direction, leading to inconsistent outcomes in areas such as crypto asset ownership, valuation, and customer protections.
This Note examines bankruptcy …

The Perceived Barriers To Services Among Hispanic Immigrant Community Members In Southern Connecticut, Catherine Andrea Ortegon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In this qualitative phenomenological study, the perceived barriers to services among Hispanic immigrant community members in Southern Connecticut were explored. The study was grounded in social disorganization theory and cultural conflict theory to identify the specific obstacles these communities face, understand the underlying causes, and examine the broader societal and criminal justice implications. Data were collected through open-ended anonymous questionnaires with participants from Hispanic immigrant communities. The findings revealed that fear of deportation, language barriers, and limited education about available services and resources were the most perceived barriers. These challenges were found to significantly affect the integration and well-being of …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Tetanus and diphtheria (tetanus/diphtheria) infections are rare in the United States (U.S.), but adequate vaccination is essential to prevent disease and associated morbidity and mortality. Compared with U.S.-born persons, immigrant and refugee adults have lower completion rates for tetanus/diphtheria vaccination series. However, most electronic health record (EHR)-generated recommendations only advise tetanus/diphtheria vaccines every 10 years for persons ≥18 years. This analysis compared documented completion of tetanus/diphtheria 3-dose vaccination series with EHR-generated recommendations for immigrant and refugee patients at three U.S. health systems seen during 2017-2022. The EHR documented complete 3-dose tetanus/diphtheria vaccine series for 28 % of 50,829 adult immigrant …

Associations Between Occupation Of World Trade Center Responders And Ptsd Prevalence And Symptom Expression, Jonah K. Luby
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The World Trade Center attacks on September 11th, 2001, had a drastic impact on American culture across many different mediums. Among those impacted, first responders experienced intense responsibilities beyond the bounds of typical expectation and training, putting them particularly at risk for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD in first responders is often examined on a wide scale, where all types of responder roles are compared to the general population or within their individual groups. This study examined the association between occupation of responders at the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and PTSD prevalence and symptom expression. Patterns of symptoms …

The landmark discovery that neutrinos have mass and can change type (or flavour) as they propagate—a process called neutrino oscillation1,2,3,4,5,6—has opened up a rich array of theoretical and experimental questions being actively pursued today. Neutrino oscillation remains the most powerful experimental tool for addressing many of these questions, including whether neutrinos violate charge-parity (CP) symmetry, which has possible connections to the unexplained preponderance of matter over antimatter in the Universe7,8,9,10,11. Oscillation measurements also probe the mass-squared differences between the different neutrino mass states (Δm2), whether there are two light states and a heavier …

BACKGROUND: Incorporating people who use substances into a community-engaged research process can support the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based harm reduction programs. Attending to their voice ensures those who need these programs will use them. Yet, ongoing co-learning with people who use substances, often the ideal for community engaged research, poses a challenge for recruitment, ongoing participation, and obtaining diverse perspectives. We need novel strategies to support flexibility among populations experiencing legal and social instability so that community engaged work includes more diverse perspectives. In this paper, we describe a novel community engagement approach called Effective Adaptable and Sustainable in …

Onchocerciasis remains a significant cause of morbidity and economic loss in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the existence of effective therapeutics, a prophylactic vaccine targeting the etiologic agent, Onchocerca volvulus, is needed to control ongoing disease and transmission. Mice were vaccinated against O. volvulus with a fusion of the recombinant antigens Ov-103 and Ov-RAL-2 (Ov-FUS-1) with Advax-CpG adjuvant. Immunized mice developed protective immunity with the killing of third-stage larvae (L3) within 36 h of challenge infection. IgG from immunized mice passively transferred protective immunity to naïve mice, indicating that antigen-specific IgG mediated parasite elimination. Neutrophils were the most abundant subset of immune …

A Formidable Female Network: The Role Of Women In William Henry Fox Talbot’S Establishment Of Early Photography, Rose Teanby Phd
Art Inquiries
This paper explores how women assisted William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) to establish his Photogenic Drawing and Calotype photographic processes in Great Britain and Europe. Utilising preserved contemporary correspondence as a primary source of unedited transcribed conversations, the genesis of photography can be revisited from an alternative viewpoint of extensive familial collaboration. Letters between Talbot and his female relatives exposed a sophisticated network of interconnected mid 19th century social elite, providing multiple opportunities for informal advocacy and timely dissemination of the new scientific art.
Epistolary exchanges from 1839 to 1858 provide new insights into women’s subtle, less visible influence …

Conjuring Elizabeth Fulhame: Using Ai To Depict The Invisible Woman From The Dawn Of Photography., Yvette Hamilton
Art Inquiries
Histories of the origins of photography are dominated by men, but the lesser-known contributions of women, such as the British chemist Elizabeth Fulhame, were fundamental to its success. Fulhame’s eighteenth-century chemical experiments directly contributed to the birth of photography, however, she is either totally obscured, or only briefly footnoted, in foundational texts on the history of photography. Her obscuration is heightened by the complete absence of any surviving images of her - she is, quite literally, invisible within a medium whose history privileges the visible.
This paper charts my practice-led research that used AI generative imaging to create speculative portraits …
The British Photographic Industry And The Roles Of Women 1840-1920: A Survey, Michael Pritchard
The British Photographic Industry And The Roles Of Women 1840-1920: A Survey, Michael Pritchard
Art Inquiries
This essay surveys the role of women within the British photographic industry to 1920 and attempts to quantify the numbers involved, their roles and how they were perceived by contemporary commentators. In common with so much of nineteenth century arts and sciences women are rarely present having been excluded by legal constraints on wealth and property, from the membership of professional bodies, and by being ignored by the contemporary press, this essay provides substantive numbers emphasising their significance.

Review: 60th October Salon - What’S Left?, Rachel Klipa
Art Inquiries
Spread across nine venues and public spaces in Belgrade, Serbia, the 60th October Salon’s concept posed a pressing question: What’s Left? In a moment marked by oppressive capitalism, cultural erasure, and the slow dismantling of socialist ideals, this year’s biennial resisted nostalgia and nationalism. Instead, it probed the emotional and political residues of systems in flux, examining how art can sustain memory, provoke continuity, and imagine new futures in uncertain times.

DNA polymerase θ (Polθ) is a polymerase-helicase fusion protein that is synthetically lethal with homologous recombination (HR) factors, such as BRCA1/2, and confers resistance to PARP inhibitors (PARPi) and other genotoxic cancer therapies. Previously developed Polθ polymerase (Polθ-pol) inhibitors (Polθi) exhibited limited pharmacological activity and metabolic stability, warranting the development of a Polθi with improved drug-like properties. Here, we developed RTx-303, a selective allosteric small-molecule Polθ-pol inhibitor that exhibits 5.1 nM IC50, 88% oral bioavailability, and a prolonged half-life along with its equipotent metabolite. X-ray crystallography highlights the development of a solvent-exposed side-chain that is essential for the optimal drug-like …
