Investment In Implementation: A Phenomenological Study Of Principals’ Curriculum Leadership And Emotional Competence, Melissa Van Straten Nov 2025

Investment In Implementation: A Phenomenological Study Of Principals’ Curriculum Leadership And Emotional Competence, Melissa Van Straten

Educational Leadership & Administration Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative phenomenological study explored how elementary principals led the implementation of a newly adopted core literacy curriculum and how they perceived their emotional competence in this role. Grounded in implementation science (see D. L. Fixsen et al., 2010), the transtheoretical model (see Prochaska & DiClemente, 1982), and emotional intelligence (see Goleman et al., 2001), the study examined both the leadership approaches and emotional competencies principals relied on when leading curriculum implementation in their schools. Semi-structured interviews with 10 elementary principals revealed four key areas of leadership investment: investment in self, investment in people, investment in visibility, and investment in …

Interpersonal Capacity For Trustworthiness: A Reflective Framework For Navigating Entrustment, Roberto Angelo Moreira Vale Nov 2025

Interpersonal Capacity For Trustworthiness: A Reflective Framework For Navigating Entrustment, Roberto Angelo Moreira Vale

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation advances understanding of how trust shapes salient cross-cultural encounters, drawing on a constructivist grounded theory analysis of 220 interview accounts. Across these narratives, trust-related dynamics consistently appeared alongside 16 other contextual, interpersonal, and intrapersonal factors. Notably, these dynamics were identified in interviews with participants from all GLOBE cultural clusters, suggesting a degree of cross-cultural breadth that warrants further empirical testing. Together, these patterns indicate that it is not cultural difference alone that makes an encounter meaningful, but how individuals interpret and respond to the possibility or risk of entrusting and being entrusted. Salience emerged at moments when participants …

Addressing Sparsity For Knowledge Graph Completion: Data And Model Perspectives, Ran Liu Nov 2025

Addressing Sparsity For Knowledge Graph Completion: Data And Model Perspectives, Ran Liu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are powerful tools for structuring factual knowledge into relational triples, yet their practical utility is often adversely affected by data sparsity. Many entities and relations are associated with only a few observations, which limits the quality of learned embeddings and weakens generalization in downstream tasks. The problem of sparsity led to two interrelated challenges. Firstly, it restricts the informativeness of training samples: positive examples are scarce, and conventional negative sampling often produces trivial or redundant negatives that resulting in limited guidance. Secondly, in few-shot relation learning scenarios, sparsity worsens distribution shifts between training and test relations, as …

Reading American Anarchy As A Legal History Of Immigrants: Forum On Willrich's American Anarchy Forum: Willrich's American Anarchy, Daniel J. Sharfstein

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Michael Willrich’s American Anarchy is at once an extraordinary history of ideas about anarchism and the rule of law, a history of lawyering, and a history of the simultaneous emergence of a capacious administrative state alongside a robust set of judicially protected civil liberties. While Willrich tells a rich and intricate story of illiberal border administration, American Anarchy also shows radical immigrants at work over decades in New York, with the border and its oppressive administrative apparatus little more than a dim memory. This essay explores how the book is more than a history of the border—it’s a history of …

Killing Through Their Kids, Dyllan Moreno Taxman Nov 2025

Killing Through Their Kids, Dyllan Moreno Taxman

William & Mary Law Review

In early 2024, James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced to over a decade in prison after their son, Ethan, shot and killed four classmates at Oxford High School in Michigan. The Crumbley parents incurred manslaughter liability by ignoring Ethan’s deteriorating mental state, gifting him the murder weapon, and failing to act on concerns about Ethan’s behavior on the day of the shooting. The Crumbleys were the first parents of a school shooter to be convicted of a homicide in American history. This Article suggests they will be far from the last. Indeed, less than one year after the Crumbley convictions, …

The Genomes Of Nematode-Trapping Fungi Provide Insights Into The Origin And Diversification Of Fungal Carnivorism, Yani Fan, Minghao Du, Weiwei Zhang, Wei Deng, Ence Yang, Shunxian Wang, Luwen Yan, Liao Zhang, Seogchan Kang, Jacob L Steenwyk, Zhiqiang An, Xingzhong Liu, Meichun Xiang

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Nematode-trapping fungi (NTF), most of which belong to a monophyletic lineage in Ascomycota, cannibalize nematodes and other microscopic animals, raising questions regarding the types and mechanisms of genomic changes that enabled carnivorism and adaptation to the carbon-rich and nitrogen-poor environment created by the Permian-Triassic extinction event. To address these questions, we conducted comparative genomic analyses of 21 NTF and 21 non-NTF. Carnivorism-associated changes include expanded genes for nematode capture, infection, and consumption (e.g., adhesive proteins, CAP superfamily, eukaryotic aspartyl proteases, and serine-type peptidases). Although the link between secondary metabolite (SM) production and carnivorism remains unclear, we found that the number …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are analgesic and spare opioids, but it remains unclear whether perioperative NSAID use worsens renal function after nephrectomy. We therefore tested the hypothesis that perioperative use of NSAID is associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) after nephrectomy surgery.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients ≥18 years old who had partial or radical nephrectomies. Patients who were given intravenous NSAIDs for postoperative analgesia were defined as one group, whereas reference patients did not use any NSAIDs. The primary outcome was the occurrence of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI), as defined by the Kidney Disease: Improving …

Competition Through Entry Fees Between Auctions For Differentiated Objects, Massimiliano Landi, Domenico Menicucci, Domenico Colucci Nov 2025

Competition Through Entry Fees Between Auctions For Differentiated Objects, Massimiliano Landi, Domenico Menicucci, Domenico Colucci

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper considers two competing auctions with objects differentiated according to the random utility framework introduced in Perloff and Salop (1985): bidders privately observe their values for the two objects, and values are ex ante i.i.d. across objects and across bidders. For the case of uniform distribution of values, we show that competition under entry fees is less intense than competition under reserve prices in the sense that sellers are better off, and bidders are worse off when competition takes place with entry fees rather than under reserve prices. The key difference between the two settings is that undercutting under …
