Prahita, Power, And Partnership (Ppp) : Navigating Community-Based Welfare And Clientelism In Myanmar’S Poverty Reduction, Comparative Analysis Of Myanmar And Thailand, Mai Tam Aung Seinn
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
Myanmar’s persistent poverty has been deeply rooted in its current political unrest, decades of poor governance, and entrenched clientelism – a system where informal patronage networks exchange material benefits for political loyalty, sidelining equitable welfare delivery (Jones, 2014, Berenschot and Mulder, 2019). The serial issues have now developed into a poly-crisis which consists of a confluence of economic collapse, political instability, and disasters like COVID-19, cyclones, earthquakes, and armed conflicts (UNDP, 2025b). Therefore, the study aims to synthesize Myanmar’s complex interplay between grassroots welfare systems, power dynamics, and external partnerships within Myanmar’s fragile context and proposes to comprehensively investigate poverty …

Integrating Goal-Setting Into An Urban Community College Developmental Mathematics Course: A Multi-Perspective Learning Experience, Tamie S. Dickson
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Developmental mathematics (DM) students often encounter systemic and contextual obstacles in higher education. Low self-efficacy, math anxiety, multiple external demands, and pervasive gaps in prerequisite knowledge can all undermine the strategic behaviors needed to manage the academic environment independently. Although DM reforms are widely researched, the literature lacks a firsthand perspective on the daily processes students apply as they assume control over their learning. This qualitative action research study investigated the integration of intentional goal-setting into a recently redesigned one-level pilot DM course at an open-access, urban community college. The practitioner-researcher created the PATHway framework—rooted in Zimmerman’s (2000) three-phase Self-Regulated …
Phylogenetic Comparative Vocal Evolution, Casper W. Buchanan
Phylogenetic Comparative Vocal Evolution, Casper W. Buchanan
Master's Theses
Vocal learning is a trait unique to humans, bats, cetaceans, primates, and birds (Jarvis & Nottebohm, 1997; McComb & Semple, 2005; Wilbrecht & Nottebohm, 2003). Although there has been extensive research on vocal learning in songbirds, parrots are an even closer proxy to human learning, as they are social, intelligent, and lifelong learners, with some having repertoires of over 300 sounds (Benedict et al., 2022; Péron et al., 2011; Thomsen et al., 2019; Toft & Wright, 2015). Elevated vocal learning can be attributed to the need for parrots to have strong communication skills through the sharing of information over foraging, …

A Fragility Framework For Surface Erosion With Application To Earthen Dam Breaching, Ege C. Kurter, Ayman Mokhtar Nemnem, M. Hanif Chaudhry, Jasim Imran
Faculty Publications
Overtopping failures of earthen dams are a growing concern under intensifying extreme rainfall. This study introduces a probabilistic fragility framework that combines hydrologic modeling, hydraulic analysis, and soil erodibility to assess erosion risk under uncertain load and resistance. Fragility curves derived from Monte Carlo simulations quantify erosion initiation and severity as functions of rainfall depth and excess shear stress. Application to multiple dams affected during the 2015 South Carolina floods reproduces observed outcomes ranging from complete breach to no damage. The framework also captures cascading effects, where failure of an upstream structure increases downstream loading and erosion potential. Compared with …

SMU Law Review Forum
Large Language Models suffer from prompt variance—meaning they’ll give you totally different legal answers depending on how you phrase your question. Jonathan Choi demonstrated this recently when he asked ChatGPT five legal questions, each rephrased 2,000 times, and watched as the bot spat out different answers every time. When you tell somebody that AI is going to replace the judge, the lawyer, and the legal system in the next twenty years, Choi’s article has become the go-to rebuttal; it’s the crown jewel of the “AI bad” genre.
Choi’s absolutely right that LLM’s are bad judges. And, if every AI was …

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Emerging adulthood (EA) is characterized as a developmental stage that entails both uncertainty and identity development. However, the experience of EAs varies based on the culture they come from and how much their culture allows flexibility for identity exploration. Our study explores the interplay between cultural frameworks, identity, and non-belonging among a sample of EAs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which presents an interesting case due to its rich multicultural society, with often conflicting cultural expectations. Using qualitative data from 255 culturally diverse participants aged 18-24 (M = 19.53, SD = 1.43), of whom 166 were women (65.1%) and …

Molecular Motion–Structure–Property Correlation In A Polymorphic Aiegen With Mechanochromic And Piezoelectric Functions, Changyong (Chase) Cao
Faculty Scholarship
Establishing direct correlations between molecular motion, crystal structure, and macroscopic properties is essential for designing responsive functional materials. Herein, we report a malononitrile-based aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), TPA-CN, that crystallizes into multiple polymorphs exhibiting distinct optoelectronic behaviors. In dilute solution, TPA-CN exhibits excitation-dependent emission spanning from sky blue to red under irradiation from 375 to 425 nm, arising from conformational flexibility and multiple excited-state transitions. In the solid state, subtle differences in crystal packing—governed by torsional angles and intermolecular interactions that modulate dipole moments—lead to pronounced variations in luminescence color and piezoelectric response. Mechanical grinding induces mechanochromic emission shifts without …

Algorithms For The Synthesis Of A Temperature Control System For The Inner Tube Heat Exchanger With A Steam Jacket, H.Z. Igamberdiyev, Jasur Sevinov, U.F. Mamirov, Sh.M. Abdishukurov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The synthesis of a feedback propagation control law for an inner tube heat exchanger with a steam jacket is addressed in this text. A controller has been developed that, based on temperature measurements taken at four points. The maintains the output temperature at a specified level by acting on the steam jacket temperature. To determine the parameters of the plant, a linear quadratic optimal (LQ-optimal) algorithm is employed. In the considered case, the optimal controller includes a proportional–integral (PI) component, as well as an additional term that requires storing the control input over the current interval for its computation. The …
The Problem Of Identification Of Linear Stationary Objects With Distributed Parameters By Their Experimental Transient Characteristics, Miraziz Vorisovich Sagatov
The Problem Of Identification Of Linear Stationary Objects With Distributed Parameters By Their Experimental Transient Characteristics, Miraziz Vorisovich Sagatov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
A wide class of control system elements can be described with reasonable accuracy by the concept of a linear stationary dynamic object. Several mathematical descriptions of such an object are known. The traditional mathematical model is a high-order ordinary linear differential equation. In the Laplace image space, this corresponds to a fractional-rational transfer function. The latter can be decomposed into elementary fractions. Then, using the convolution theorem and tables of elementary Laplace transform functions, one can access the originals. It is crucial to ensure precise alignment of the parameters of the mathematical model of the object used in the corrector …

Having purpose is good for all of us at any age. Patrick Hill, Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at WashU, defines purpose as the “notion that you have daily activities you find meaningful or engaging and that give you direction for your life [and] reasons to continue going.” In a major sense, purpose can be described as the why of living, instead of the how.

Investigation Of The Fuel Combustion Process In Gas-Fired Furnaces For Automation Systems, N.R. Yusupbekov, Sh.M. Gulyamov, A.T. Rajabov, U.U. Kholmanov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The regularities of the combustion process of gaseous fuel in chamber furnaces are described. This process represents a homogeneous reaction in which there is no distinct boundary surface between the fuel and the oxidizer. It is shown that the latter either mix and then burn subsequently, or both processes occur simultaneously, corresponding respectively to kinetic and diffusion combustion. The structure of a turbulent-diffusion flame of gaseous fuel combustion is presented.

Intelligent Decision-Making Systems In Smart Greenhouses, Muso Berdiyor Ugli Allanov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Smart greenhouses offer a solution to sustainable food production under climate uncertainty, yet their management often depends on fixed rules or human intuition. This study proposes an intelligent decision-making framework that integrates optimization, simulation, and a neural set into a self-learning system. By generating “conditionally real data” through simulation and evolutionary algorithms, the system can predict microclimatic changes and optimize control of water, energy, and nutrients. Continuous digital feedback enables adaptive, data-efficient operation even with limited real data. Experimental results demonstrate reduced resource use and improved yield stability, advancing the development of autonomous and resilient greenhouse ecosystems.
Complete Preemption Via Historical Evolution, Ryan Jain-Liu
Complete Preemption Via Historical Evolution, Ryan Jain-Liu
University of Chicago Law Review
Complete preemption is a jurisdictional doctrine that applies when a federal statute so wholly envelops certain state law claims that those claims effectively cease to exist. Aside from an explicit complete preemption hook, the Supreme Court has recognized just one way for a federal statute to completely preempt state law claims: it must provide an exclusive federal remedy and also have a special nature that makes it especially federal. Courts shirk this second prong to their own detriment. One example of complete preemption generating confusion is § 303(i) of the Bankruptcy Code, which provides remedies for involuntary debtors against bad …
The Progression Of Deinstitutionalization And Its Effects On The American South: A Judicial Analysis Of 20th-Century United States Supreme Court Decisions, Eva-Marie V. Jones
The Progression Of Deinstitutionalization And Its Effects On The American South: A Judicial Analysis Of 20th-Century United States Supreme Court Decisions, Eva-Marie V. Jones
Honors College Theses
This thesis explores the effects of four landmark Supreme Court cases on the deinstitutionalization movement in the American south. Previous literature frequently discusses the legislative implications of this era; however, no law is applicable without the interpretation and application of the judiciary, which so often contextualizes the greater public perspective. Rarely has an analysis of judicial decisions involving psychiatric care merged with regional focus, and certainly not in a format accessible to the average individual.
From unmarked graves to abandoned infrastructure, the legacy of historic psychiatric care in the United States has been largely obscured – yet its consequences continue …

Do Code Semantics Help? A Comprehensive Study On Execution Trace-Based Information For Code Large Language Models, Jian Wang, Xiaofei Xie, Qiang Hu, Shangqing Liu, Yi Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Code Large Language Models (Code LLMs) have opened a new era in programming with their impressive capabilities. However, recent research has revealed critical limitations in their ability to reason about runtime behavior and understand the actual functionality of programs, which poses significant challenges for their post-training and practical deployment. Specifically, Code LLMs encounter two principal issues: (1) a lack of proficiency in reasoning about program execution behavior, as they struggle to interpret what programs actually do during runtime, and (2) inconsistent and fragmented representation of semantic information, such as execution traces, across existing methods, which hinders their ability to generalize …

Two recent Supreme Court decisions have imposed aspects of general jurisdiction in a way that exposes corporations and possibly other legal actors to litigation in spuriously connected forums. One case-Ford Motor Company v. Montana-reached a fair result but with strained reasoning that will support unfair results. The second case-Mallory v. Norfolk Southern Railroad Company-was wrong on the facts and the law, imposing general jurisdiction based on a vaguely worded corporate registration statute validated by a more than century-old precedent based on Pennoyer v. Neff's limited territorial model. Both decisions were the result of conceptual corners the Supreme Court has created …

Each year, millions of Americans rely on public defenders to fulfill their Sixth Amendment right to counsel. Despite being the linchpin of the criminal justice system, public defense remains both underfunded and understudied. This Article provides empirical analysis to contribute to a critical question: How should public defender systems be structured?
Criminal justice advocates, scholars, and the American Bar Association strongly favor vertical representation in public defense. Under this model, a single public defender represents a defendant throughout their case, from their initial appearance through sentencing. The alternative approach—horizontal representation—operates like an assembly line: Different attorneys handle each stage of …
