The timeliness, portability, and capacity of nanopore sequencing for diagnostics can aid in early detection and drug susceptibility testing (DST), which is crucial for effective TB control. This study synthesized current evidence on the diagnostic accuracy of the nanopore sequencing technology in detecting MTB and its DST profile. A comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, Cochrane, EMBASE, Web of Science, AIM, IMEMR, IMSEAR, LILACS, WPRO, HERDIN Plus, MedRxiv, and BioRxiv was performed. Quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool. Pooled …

Two Uncited Latin Resources In King Robert Of Naples’ Sermon On Friendship For The Lombard League, Chris Nighman Dec 2025

Two Uncited Latin Resources In King Robert Of Naples’ Sermon On Friendship For The Lombard League, Chris Nighman

History Faculty Publications

This article demonstrates the reception of Thomas of Ireland’s Manipulus florum (1306) and John of Wales’ Communiloquium (ca. 1270) in a sermon by King Robert of Naples (1276-1343) promoting the revival of the military alliance known as the Lombard League, and also his use of the Manipulus in another sermon. A full edition of Robert’s sermon “pro liga Lombardie” is appended. It also corrects the misattribution to Robert of a collection of anecdotes and quotations attributed to ancient philosophers and provides a brief comparative analysis of the short and long recensions of the Communiloquium.

Integrating Evidence Synthesis Into Doctoral Research: A Guide For Family Medicine And Primary Care, Klaus B. Von Pressentin, Jacob Shabani, Taryn Young Dec 2025

Integrating Evidence Synthesis Into Doctoral Research: A Guide For Family Medicine And Primary Care, Klaus B. Von Pressentin, Jacob Shabani, Taryn Young

Family Medicine, East Africa

Given the increased complexity of healthcare needs, evidence-informed practices are needed, now more than ever. Combining the best available research evidence, the perspectives of patients and communities, and the voices of healthcare workers in guiding policy and practice is essential. All of us involved in providing and strengthening family medicine and primary care need to be good consumers (users) of research, and some will be good producers (doers) of research. In both using and doing research, a helpful starting point is evidence synthesis – a form of secondary research that collates primary research on the same research question. This short …

The Impact Of Multiple Measure Placement In Determining College Readiness On Student Perceived Readiness, Steven A. Szeszko Ii Dec 2025

The Impact Of Multiple Measure Placement In Determining College Readiness On Student Perceived Readiness, Steven A. Szeszko Ii

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to propose a qualitative grounded theory study that explores the impact of multiple measures placement on determining college readiness as perceived by students, specifically within a community college located in South Central Texas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and universities found themselves needing an alternative method to the traditional college placement testing to determine student readiness for college courses. This change impacted not only the higher education sector but also students. Therefore, this study will collect data from approximately 20 students, through the use of open-ended electronic student questionnaires and interviews, filtered for patterns …

Building Community Resilience For Disasters In The Wabash Valley, Nathan Myers Dec 2025

Building Community Resilience For Disasters In The Wabash Valley, Nathan Myers

2025 Fall Reports (Terre Haute)

As part of the 2025 Indiana State University Sustainable Cities Initiative, we worked on two interconnected research projects: conducting a community needs assessment (as requested by Catholic Charities) and developing a climate-related disaster plan for the City of Terre Haute, Indiana. To complete this work, a student research team examined current statistical information for the Wabash Valley region (including Vigo, Clay, Parke, Vermillion, and Sullivan counties), as well as conducting and analyzing interviews, focus groups, and survey data to determine strengths, challenges, opportunities, and threats related to community resilience in the area. This same information, in conjunction with information from …

Israeli Hasbara And The Nba’S Palestine Exception: The Impossibility Of Capitalist “Social Justice”, Chen Chen, Anthony J. Weems, Roc Rochon, Daniel Sailofsky Dec 2025

Israeli Hasbara And The Nba’S Palestine Exception: The Impossibility Of Capitalist “Social Justice”, Chen Chen, Anthony J. Weems, Roc Rochon, Daniel Sailofsky

Sport Management Collection

Sport is a notable site for the Israeli state in its hasbara (public diplomacy, or “explaining”) effort that seeks to normalize the conditions of ethnic cleansing, illegal settlement, and apartheid practices in historic and occupied Palestine. Against the backdrop of the genocide in Gaza and the lack of international sport sanctions against Israeli teams, this paper maps several hasbara activities/attempts featuring the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the last decade. This is a worthwhile case, not least because of the NBA’s self-branding as a socially “progressive” league composed of a primarily Black/African American athletic workforce. Two major observations are made: …

Differences In Total Daily Energy Expenditure Across Field Sports: A Narrative Review, Brenen Skalitzky, Jennifer Fields, Margaret T. Jones, Chad Kerksick, Andrew Jagim

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Differences in total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) across sports, sex, and skill level support the need for sport- and athlete-specific energy intake recommendations. The purpose of the current review was to examine TDEE and related markers of energy expenditure across field-based team sports. A secondary aim was to evaluate physical activity levels (PAL), calculated as TDEE divided by resting metabolic rate (RMR), and their utility in estimating energy needs within team sports.

Methods: The review was limited to studies that included the field-based team sports of rugby or soccer and reported energy expenditure data using doubly labeled water …

Drivers Of Ecosystem Respiration In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain Aquifer, Eva Tipps Dec 2025

Drivers Of Ecosystem Respiration In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain Aquifer, Eva Tipps

Biology ETDs

Little is known about carbon flux and ecosystem metabolism in river floodplains, despite their potentially large and dynamic contributions to carbon storage and loss. We hypothesized that the region of intermittent saturation (ROIS), which is the subsurface interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, is a biogeochemical ‘hotspot’ for ecosystem respiration and carbon transformation. Groundwater depth and variability in the ROIS facilitate interactions between aquatic and terrestrial processes, but their role in carbon fluxes is poorly understood. We developed a novel method utilizing high-frequency sensors in groundwater wells to capture biogeochemical ‘hot moments’ of ecosystem respiration in the ROIS of the …

These Yellow Stars Of Ours, Vinh Hong Nguyen Dec 2025

These Yellow Stars Of Ours, Vinh Hong Nguyen

Theses

These Yellow Stars of Ours is an experimental documentary that traces the intertwined histories of Thaun and Nam Nguyen as they flee war-torn Vietnam, fall in love, and build a life in Western New York. Through their accounts and those of their two sons, the film explores the complexities of generational trauma and the ongoing experience of bicultural straddling—the negotiation between inherited Vietnamese identity and the shaping influence of an American upbringing. The project examines how trauma, memory, and cultural displacement circulate across generations, shaping identity in both visible and invisible ways. Methodologically, the film is structured around the conceptual …

Writing Without Peter: Reflections On Peter Elbow And His Legacy: Peter Elbow The Philosopher, Irene Papoulis

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

On the occasion of Peter Elbow’s passing, we read many tributes and praises commemorating him and the foundational contributions he made to the multi-faceted field of writing studies. But as we know, even as Peter’s ideas were lauded and embraced, they were also questioned by many, including other renowned members of our profession.

“Narrative Medicine Saved My Life”: Writing Is A Verb As Well As A Noun, Marian M. Maccurdy, Sarah Robinson Dec 2025

“Narrative Medicine Saved My Life”: Writing Is A Verb As Well As A Noun, Marian M. Maccurdy, Sarah Robinson

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Dedicated to Professor Peter Elbow 4/14/1935 – 2/6/2025

I, Marian, began my career as a graduate student in medieval literature who had a teaching assistantship to fund her degree. As a graduate student I lived in a world that saw writing as a noun, something done and finished, not as a verb, a process that shows us a world that is as ever-changing as we are. But as a writing teacher I found myself sliding into the world that writers inhabit, and

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Editor’s note: This past year, AEPL held its first full, in-person conference since the pandemic at our beloved Estes Park location in the Rockies. To commemorate the return of this staple event for our organization, here’s a snapshot of one of the workshops, led by immediate past AEPL Chair, Geraldine DeLuca, “Writing Our Spiritual Autobiographies,” in which DeLuca asked attendees to consider, where and how did we begin, spiritually? What sustains us now? Deluca provided three prompts by Wallace Stevens, Karen Armstrong, and Audre Lorde to aid attendees in their reflection and writing processes. These prompts appear at the end …

Review: Williams, Bronwyn T. Literacies In Times Of Disruption: Living And Learning During A Pandemic., Ashna Singh

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This review is structured around three central concepts that Williams develops throughout this book: affect, assemblages, and the connection between memory and identity. In Literacies in Times of Disruption: Living and Learning During a Pandemic, Williams focuses on the narratives of over thirty university students at the University of Louisville to examine how their literacy practices and emerging identities were influenced by physical, emotional, and structural crises.

Bringing Mindfulness Into First-Year Composition, Matt Lemas Dec 2025

Bringing Mindfulness Into First-Year Composition, Matt Lemas

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

I first stumbled upon the relationship between mindfulness and writing sometime after college. I had been meditating for a few years—not perfectly, but enough to notice the way it softened the inner critic and procrastinator that usually accompanied me to the page.

James Moffett’S Basic Principles, Jonathan M. Marine, Stephen Lafer Dec 2025

James Moffett’S Basic Principles, Jonathan M. Marine, Stephen Lafer

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

The tricky part about trying to distill James Moffett’s basic principles is that there are so many of them. In literature, the “major” poets are separated form the “minor” for a number of reasons, but one critical criteria is development; major poets have to develop across the span of their careers, either writing in new forms, or about and with new ideas or themes. Suffice to say, Moffett developed a great deal across his career, from a focus on pedagogy to a focus on spirituality and mindfulness along with increasing consideration of educational assessment and policy. Of course, I’m overgeneralizing …

Book Reviews Introduction: Is It Just Me?, Curtis Porter

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Each of the reviews in this issue of JAEPL focus on a book that was published long before this particular crisis. The books span very different academic fields and very different research methodologies. Yet each reviewer gives a glimpse of how the research behind each book emerged from lived challenges and illustrates how that research sheds light on the daily work and daily struggle that we collectively face.

Improving Data Quality In Survey Research: The Role Of Machine Learning In Handling Inconsistent Responses, Patrick Ndungutse

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This project aims to strengthen Gallup’s survey data preprocessing by integrating machine learning methods to detect inconsistent responses, complementing existing rule-based checks. The study benchmarks techniques such as Isolation Forest, clustering-based outlier scores, and autoencoders against current approaches to spot inconsistencies more efficiently and with reduced manual effort.

We will evaluate models using a dataset of survey responses previously flagged for inconsistency by Gallup, focusing on accuracy, coverage, and efficiency validated through expert review. The goal is to automate response classification into pass, review, or fail stages, aiming to reduce manual review time by about 25%, or 15 hours weekly, …

“The Goal Is To Help The Community”: Motivations And Experiences Of Diverse Families In A Special Education Parent Advocacy Program, Diana Cruz Dec 2025

“The Goal Is To Help The Community”: Motivations And Experiences Of Diverse Families In A Special Education Parent Advocacy Program, Diana Cruz

Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) entitles parents of eligible students with disabilities to meaningful participation in their children’s educational planning. Despite this mandate, many parents encountered barriers that limited their ability to participate in special education processes. These challenges were amplified for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families who often lacked the social and cultural capital needed to navigate the system (Trainor, 2010b). Culturally and linguistically diverse parents experience systemic barriers such as limited interpretation, discrimination, and cultural differences that restrict their engagement (Buren et al., 2018; Doucet, 2011; Harry, 2008; Kalyanpur et al., 2000; Sanders-Smith et …

Narrative Economics Of Sports Gambling Legalization: A Case Study Of The United States, Tyler John Hajek Dec 2025

Narrative Economics Of Sports Gambling Legalization: A Case Study Of The United States, Tyler John Hajek

Dissertations

Following the end of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, legalized sports betting has become prevalent in the United States (U.S.). Most states legalized the activities due to consumer interest and financial potential for tax revenue generation. The purpose of this study was to explore how legalized sports betting influenced tax revenues in the initial years of expanded adoption in the U.S. To address this purpose, the research questions were structured to uncover if states collectively benefited from the introduction of legalized sports betting, what states have financially benefitted from the implementation of legalized sports betting, and …

A Lineage Of Contemporary Jazz Violin, Tsu Hao Kuo Dec 2025

A Lineage Of Contemporary Jazz Violin, Tsu Hao Kuo

Dissertations

The development of jazz violin has always been multifaceted. Not only has it followed the evolution of jazz, but it has also established its own parallel genres. Since the swing era, the violin no longer remains a top choice for jazz musicians as opposed to early jazz musicians who often doubled on string instruments. Intriguingly, the decline of its popularity in larger ensembles did not inhibit the growth of the jazz violin. Not only did jazz violinists thrive in small jazz ensembles, but its distinct blend with other string music genres also reached styles beyond the common narrative of jazz …

Exploring The Integration Of Social And Emotional Learning In Chinese High School Music Courses, Yao Lu Dec 2025

Exploring The Integration Of Social And Emotional Learning In Chinese High School Music Courses, Yao Lu

Dissertations

Social and emotional learning has become increasingly important in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. The mental health and emotional well-being of students have received unprecedented attention. However, in China, social and emotional learning is still a relatively new concept. High school students are in a critical period for self-identification and the development of values. Academic competition and peer comparisons have increased significantly, making them more in need of systematic, operational SEL support. Music, as a “natural carrier” of emotions, can externalize, identify, and regulate individual emotions, and can also cultivate empathy and relationship skills in collaborative settings such …
