Just Be Yourself....But Only If You Are Like Us? A Social Identity Theory Cross-Cultural Meta-Analysis Of Authentic Leadership, Andrei A. Lux, Kevin B. Lowe, Patricio Duran, Darren K. Bharanitharan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
We apply social identity theory (SIT) within a culturally endorsed implicit leadership theory (CLT) frame to model how cultural values shape relationships between authentic leadership and follower outcomes. We use meta-analytic methods to test hypotheses with data from 292 studies drawn from over 40 countries, comprised of 100,641 individuals, and including 35 attitudinal, behavioural, and performance outcomes. Meta-analytic regression of cultural values coded at the country level reveals a significant pattern of moderation effects across 42.9% of the correlates we tested, suggesting that authentic leadership theory is culturally embedded. The effects of authentic leadership vary to the extent that it …

This study aimed to explore whether health effects of dietary nitrate depend on its source, by investigating associations between plant and animal-sourced dietary nitrate groups with markers of inflammation and CVD risk factors. Among 100 non-smoking adults (mean age 49 ± 13 years, 31% male), dietary nitrate intake was assessed using food frequency questionnaire (n=100) and 3-day food diary (n=89), combined with nitrate food composition databases. Nitrate intake was classified into plant, naturally occurring animal and additive-permitted meat-sourced groups. Associations between source-dependent nitrate intakes and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), C-reactive protein (CRP), fasting plasma lipids, anthropometry, and blood pressure were …
Enhancing Physical Performance With Ischemic Preconditioning: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Moderators And Performance Outcomes, Yilin Zhang, Kai Xu, Hao Kong, Mingyue Yin, Chenghao Liu, Yun Xie, Liam Kilduff, Gustavo R. Mota, Olivier Girard
Enhancing Physical Performance With Ischemic Preconditioning: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Moderators And Performance Outcomes, Yilin Zhang, Kai Xu, Hao Kong, Mingyue Yin, Chenghao Liu, Yun Xie, Liam Kilduff, Gustavo R. Mota, Olivier Girard
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study examined the effects of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on physical performance, considering the influence of timing, warm-up (WU), participant characteristics, and IPC protocols structure. A total of 90 trials (1,439 participants) were retrieved from three databases and assessed using PICOS criteria. Multilevel meta-analyses with cluster-robust variance adjustments were conducted to calculate pooled effect sizes (Hedge’s g). Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using the RoB 2 tool and GRADE framework. IPC produced a trivial but significant improvement in physical performance (g = 0.13, P < 0.01), which persisted after excluding SHAM effects (g = 0.10; P < 0.01). Significant improvements were observed for maximum repetitions, time to failure, and power output, but not for jump ability, strength, or oxygen uptake. Comparable benefits were found for anaerobic (g = 0.15) and aerobic (g = 0.10) exercise, with greater effects in males and less-trained participants. Performance was further enhanced when IPC was followed by WU (g = 0.16), with the optimal IPC-to-WU interval being ~42 minutes. Without WU, the effective IPC window narrowed to 6–7 minutes. In practice, IPC can enhance physical performance, independently of sham effects, moderated by sex, training level, and WU. For competition or testing, the most effective strategy appears to be 3 or 4 × 5-min IPC protocol, followed by a 42-min interval, standardized warm-up, and endurance testing. For mechanistic studies, WU should be excluded, and testing conducted 6-7 minutes post-IPC. Future research should target women, middle-aged individuals, and elite athletes.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper presents findings from a study exploring Australian academic librarians' concerns about the impact of misinformation and disinformation on society, university students and access to reliable information. It also investigates strategies librarians consider effective for addressing mis/disinformation through information literacy programs. Sixty-two librarians responded to a survey comprising Likert scale and open-ended questions. Respondents expressed the greatest concern about the influence of mis/disinformation on news media and social media. There was strong agreement that mis/disinformation should be regulated on social media and that librarians play a key role in addressing it through information literacy. However, views on the importance …

Rethinking Australian Teacher Education: A Reflective Tool For Culturally And Linguistically Sustaining Pedagogies, Sasha Janes, Paolino, Jane Merewether, Christine Cunningham
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Australia’s cultural and linguistic diversity highlights a pressing need for teacher education programs to prepare educators who can effectively support plurilingual learners. At the same time, existing programs often fall short in building the pedagogic and linguistic knowledge required to counter dominant English-only norms. This study draws on the framework of culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies (CLSP) to explicitly centre plurilingual practices. CLSP is particularly relevant in the Australian context, where English-centric policies continue to marginalise First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) knowledges and perspectives and plurilingual ways of knowing and being. We present findings from a national study …

Governing By Fragments: Soviet Ruins And The Architecture Of Unaccountability In Kazakhstan, Robert A. Kopack, Magdalena E. Stawkoski
Faculty Publications
This article examines two case studies in Kazakhstan with research into how Soviet institutional legacies underwrite extractive economies that render toxic costs invisible in post-Soviet setting. Through ethnographic work in Stepnogorsk (uranium processing) and the Semipalatinsk Test Site (nuclear weapons testing), we extend Gabrielle Hecht’s residual governance framework to demonstrate how inherited bureaucratic compartmentalization now serves market rather than state interests. We introduce the concept of functional nonreform to describe how distributed actors maintain Soviet-era boundaries that prevent accountability: Agencies monitor but don’t enforce, health authorities lack jurisdiction over contaminated sites, and environmental agencies measure radiation but cannot restrict land …
Reflections On Linear B, (Part 15): Sign 81 In Linear A And The Egyptian Four-Headed Ram God, Gerald Leonard Cohen
Reflections On Linear B, (Part 15): Sign 81 In Linear A And The Egyptian Four-Headed Ram God, Gerald Leonard Cohen
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
This article makes several tentative suggestions, including:
1. Linear A sign 81 (antecedent of Linear B81) may be an abbreviated image (two heads) of the four-headed Egyptian ram god Banebdjedet, with the horizontal line designating his horns shifted downward to the middle of the character.
2. A few other Linear A characters (e.g., sign 305) may represent slight alterations of sign A81.
3. Linear A82 includes two sets of three short horizontal lines. Those might signify brightness, and in the case of Banebdjedet the brightness would be his wisdom.

A Scoping Review To Conceptualize Social Privilege For Studying Patients' Health Outcomes And Health Disparities, Elizabeth A. Brown, Priyanka Patel, Esther May B. Sarino, Vladimir Markovic, Carles Muntaner
Health Behavior, Policy & Management Faculty Publications
Background
The continued reliance on single-category self-reported demographic data (e.g., race/ethnicity) reflects conceptual limitations that hinder the study and understanding of health outcomes research. There is a pressing need for more precise measures of social privilege that conceptualize privilege and oppression while enabling the examination of their effects on health outcomes in the United States (US) healthcare system.
Objective
The purpose of this scoping review was to review the literature, determine how researchers have measured aspects of privilege and oppression, and develop a conceptual framework to study patients' social privilege in the US healthcare system and public health research.

The rise of edge intelligence is driving distributed machine learning toward a new paradigm of edge-collaborative computing. To overcome the severe communication bottleneck in this paradigm, In-Network Aggregation is a critical enabling technology. However, its effectiveness is fundamentally undermined by the profound resource heterogeneity of edge networks. Specifically, edge devices, adapting to hardware constraints, operate at varying numerical precisions, leading to significant data inflation as gradients are aggregated. Compounding this, unevenly distributed network resources and traditional, precision-oblivious routing strategies often misallocate critical, high-precision gradients to low-quality paths. This mismatch creates severe network congestion, crippling the efficiency of distributed training. To …

Federated Learning (FL) is a paradigm that enables collaborative machine learning without disclosing the local data of the participants. However, in real-world FL deployment scenarios, some unscrupolous clients may alter the training process to skew the global model towards their local optimum, unfairly prioritizing their data distribution. Their influence can degrade overall model performance for normal clients and reduce fairness in the system. We call this novel category of misbehaving clients 'selfish'. This work proposes a Fair and Robust strategy for aggregation in the Federated Learning (FL) server to mitigate the effect of Selfish clients (FairRFL). FairRFL incorporates a novel …

Mining industry is rapidly transforming into an AI-driven cyber-physical ecosystem where safety and operational reliability depend on robust perception, resilient communication, trustworthy distributed intelligence and continuous monitoring of miners and equipment. Real-world mining environments impose severe constraints like poor illumination, dust, occlusion, GPS-denied conditions, irregular underground topologies, and intermittent connectivity. These factors degrade perception quality, disrupt situational awareness, impair trajectory prediction and weaken the reliability of distributed learning systems. Emerging cyber-physical threats, including backdoor triggers, sensor spoofing, label-flip attacks and poisoned model updates, further jeopardize operational safety, particularly as mines increasingly adopt autonomous vehicles, humanoid assistance, and federated learning for …

Quantum routing deals with identifying a set of quantum repeaters to use to create entanglement between distant endpoints. Previous approaches proposed shortest-path and linear programming methods to find a solution to this problem. While the shortest path approach results in suboptimal performance, linear programming takes too long to find a solution as the network size and constraints increase. In this paper, we apply Deep Q-Reinforcement Learning (DQRL) to optimize routing in quantum networks both in terms of execution time and performance. The proposed Quantum Routing Algorithm (QuRA) first chooses which request to schedule among all requests. It then determines which …
