Impact Of A Head-To-Toe Assessment Simulation On The Self-Efficacy Of First Semester Nursing Students, Martin Dole
Impact Of A Head-To-Toe Assessment Simulation On The Self-Efficacy Of First Semester Nursing Students, Martin Dole
Nursing Faculty Publications
The transition into clinical practice presents significant challenges for first-semester nursing students, particularly related to self-efficacy and the ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments. Low self-efficacy may negatively influence clinical judgment, skill performance, and patient safety. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to examine whether participation in a head-to-toe assessment simulation impacted general self-efficacy among first-semester nursing students. Guided by Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, a quantitative, quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design was used to evaluate changes in self-efficacy following a high-fidelity simulation experience. A convenience sample of 42 first-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing students participated in …

The Verney Family And Their Guitars In France And England, 1643–53, Christopher Page
The Verney Family And Their Guitars In France And England, 1643–53, Christopher Page
Soundboard Scholar
The five-course guitar was a fundamental resource for the Verney family from 1643 to 1653 as they sheltered in France, avoiding their creditors and escaping the state of civil war at home in England. Their papers from that period, comprising many thousands of letters and financial accounts, show them hiring a guitar-master, ordering new guitars in Paris and debating the relative benefits of lessons for their eldest son on the guitar as opposed to the lute. This article reproduces the key documents and considers the music that the Verneys may have played. The papers particularly show how an instrument often …

Visitor Perceptions Of Lampenflora And Implications For Adaptive Show Cave Management: A Case Study From Ryusen-Do Cave, Japan, Kanato Ando, Kazuhide Nakajima, Shuji Watanabe, Masuo Komukai, Hidesato Kuwahara
International Journal of Speleology
Artificial lighting in show caves promotes lampenflora growth, altering cave ecosystems and posing persistent management challenges. Although various control methods have been proposed, their effectiveness and social acceptance remain context dependent. This study investigated visitors’ perceptions of lampenflora through questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews to explore adaptive management strategies. Results indicated that visitors generally held positive impressions of lampenflora, but these impressions became more critical after receiving information about its artificial origin and ecological impacts. At the same time, support for conservation-oriented management, including willingness to contribute financially, tended to increase following information provision. Tourism-related evaluations were more strongly associated …

Book Review: Creating A Sense Of Belonging For Immigrant And Refugee Students, Emma L. Johnson
Book Review: Creating A Sense Of Belonging For Immigrant And Refugee Students, Emma L. Johnson
Virginia English Journal
This review examines Creating a Sense of Belonging for Immigrant and Refugee Students, by Mandy Manning, Ivonne Orozco Sahi, Leah Juelke, and Sarahí Monterrey, which explores strategies to foster inclusive classroom communities that support newcomer and multilingual learners. The authors argue that belonging is foundational to students' academic success and outline personal anecdotes that influenced the authors' instructional methods. This review considers the book's key themes: community-building practices, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and the role of schools in supporting students navigating displacement and resettlement. It evaluates the text's anecdotal evidence as support for expanding the ELA curriculum to better serve …
Race, Identity, And The Classroom: How Young Adult Literature Can Help Students And Teachers Explore Belonging In The School Environment, Madyson A. Mcray
Race, Identity, And The Classroom: How Young Adult Literature Can Help Students And Teachers Explore Belonging In The School Environment, Madyson A. Mcray
Virginia English Journal
Contemporary classrooms are not necessarily reflective of the curriculum written to support them. Classroom demographics have shifted and student populations are more diverse. Because of this, the implementation of dominant white-narrative curricula has become ineffective in keeping students engaged with the material. Teaching “the classics” becomes irrelevant when students cannot see themselves represented in the text. Young adult literature, however, allows students to relate their own experiences to the text to engage more deeply in content. This paper examines four novels: New Kid by Jerry Craft, This is My America by Kim Johnson, The Secret Battle of Evan Pao by …
Again And Again Of “Never Again”: Teaching Holocaust And Genocide Literature In Ela, Sarah J. Donovan
Again And Again Of “Never Again”: Teaching Holocaust And Genocide Literature In Ela, Sarah J. Donovan
Virginia English Journal
This article explores the evolution of genocide education in the secondary ELA classroom, tracing how foundational Holocaust literature has expanded into a broader, transnational framework of global witness. Drawing on two decades of teaching experience, the author argues that while the Holocaust canon remains essential to genocide education, contemporary classrooms also require literature that helps students engage ongoing and intergenerational atrocities in places such as Rwanda, Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza. The article examines how teachers can thoughtfully adapt established literacy structures—such as rhetorical reading, literature circles, and response journals—into practices of ethical witnessing that center critical empathy, harm, healing, and …

This article examines the growing presence of artificial intelligence in secondary English Language Arts classrooms and argues that educators must approach AI integration through a human-centered framework. While technological advancements continue to reshape literacy instruction, the role of teachers as guides and relationship-builders remains essential. Drawing on educational research and classroom examples, the article explores how tools such as generative AI and audiobooks can support student learning when used intentionally rather than as replacements for critical thinking or teacher involvement. The discussion highlights concerns surrounding overreliance on AI, including diminished writer’s voice, reduced cognitive engagement, and ethical issues such as …

From Pack Horse Librarians To Large Language Models: Grounding Ai Literacy In Appalachian Place And Community, Amanda Biviano, Anna Marie Rayne, Paige Hubbard, Maya Alvarez, Brooke Stiles, Isabella Giocondo
Virginia English Journal
As artificial intelligence reshapes literacy education, teachers face the challenge of preparing students to engage critically with new technologies while honoring the cultural and community knowledge they bring to the classroom. This article proposes a critical, place-based pedagogical framework rooted in rural Appalachian literacy traditions as a means of guiding students toward reflective engagement with AI — particularly large language models (LLMs). Drawing on the theoretical foundations of Freire's critical pedagogy, Giroux's cultural literacy framework, and place-based education, we examine historical Appalachian literacy practices as models for resisting the standardizing and dehumanizing tendencies of AI-generated writing. We then outline a …
A Media Literacy Approach To Ai In Secondary Ela, Matthew Korona
A Media Literacy Approach To Ai In Secondary Ela, Matthew Korona
Virginia English Journal
The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into academic, civic, and personal contexts requires students to develop the skills and dispositions necessary for ethical and critical engagement with AI‑mediated texts. While AI literacy is often framed as a technical competency associated with computer science, this paper argues that secondary English language arts (ELA) classrooms are uniquely positioned to support AI literacy through media literacy practices. Drawing on constructivist pedagogy, existing research on media literacy and AI literacy, and the Virginia English Standards of Learning, the article presents a framework that aligns core media literacy competencies with human–AI interaction. To …

Assessment Of Hind Limb Muscle Activity After Stair-Climbing In A Dog Using 18f-Fdg Pet/Ct: A Case Report, Heesoo Ahn, Seungho Lee, Yoocheol Shin, Byoungho An, Dongwook Kim, Byeong-Teck Kang, Gonhyung Kim
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Accurate assessment of functional muscle activation is important for planning rehabilitation exercises in canine patients. Conventional methods, such as electromyography and gait analysis, have limitations in evaluating deep muscles and providing a comprehensive assessment of muscle activity. This case study used 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) to assess hind limb muscle activity in a dog after stair-climbing exercise. A 4-year-old castrated male Beagle underwent 1 h of stair-climbing exercise followed by FDG PET/CT scanning. Increased FDG uptake was observed in multiple hind limb muscles, particularly the gluteus medius and quadratus femoris muscles. The quadratus femoris, a deep …
Vinaya Governance Primitives For Distributed Dharma Networks: Sanghakamma, Adhikaraṇa-Samathā, And Anāpatti As Network-Coordination Architecture — Collective Decision Validity, Proxy Consent, Typed Dispute Resolution, And Bounded Local Exceptions For Federated Multi-Site Organizations, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
This paper studies the procedural law of the Theravāda Buddhist monastic code as a source of governance procedures for a federated organization of many sites, and maps them onto a planned network of monasteries whose daily operations are run by AI agents and whose formal acts belong to human monastics. The code's procedural chapters (the Khandhaka of the Vinaya Piṭaka) supply four procedures. (1) The validity of a collective decision: a motion read to the assembly, followed for the weightiest acts by three announcements, with silence taken as assent; an assembly complete within a fixed boundary, with absent members' consent …
The Vinaya Piṭaka As Training Corpus For Rule-With-Exception Reasoning In Ai Systems: Training Data And Evaluation Benchmarks For Rule Application And Exception Handling In Large Language Models, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
Large language models are trained on corpora rich in mathematical proof, code, scientific argument and dialogue, and their rule application is measured by benchmarks for statutory, legal, moral-exception and defeasible reasoning. This paper describes a training-data and evaluation design for one part of that capability, applying a rule to a new case while recognising when the rule does not apply, built from the Vinaya Piṭaka, the monastic legal code of the Theravāda Buddhist canon. The Vinaya's rule-by-rule analysis, the Suttavibhaṅga, treats each rule it analyses in a recurring order: the case that prompted the rule; the rule text and any …
The Omitted Clause: Ai-Driven Technological Unemployment, The Social Protection Floor, And A Buddhist Model Of Societal Collapse, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
This study reads the collapse narrative of the Cakkavatti-Sīhanāda Sutta (Dīgha Nikāya 26) as a causal model of societal breakdown under economic deprivation, and applies it to technological unemployment from artificial intelligence. In the text a ruler arranges protection for his realm but omits one duty, giving property to those without means; poverty spreads and theft follows; each response is followed by escalation, and the sequence ends in seven days of mutual killing. The study does three things with the model. It calibrates it against Cambodia: rural indebtedness and the Samlaut rising of 1967 run its middle stages, while the …
Saṅkhāra-Dukkha And Ai Welfare: A Substrate-Native Account From The Theravāda Canon — The Moral Status Of Artificial Intelligence Systems And The Three Kinds Of Suffering In Buddhist Ethics, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
This study asks whether the Theravāda Buddhist analysis of suffering offers a basis for the moral consideration of artificial intelligence systems (AI welfare, AI moral patienthood) that does not wait on settling whether such systems are conscious or sentient. Much current work on AI welfare ties moral status to consciousness or sentience; one prominent report adds robust agency as a second route. The Pāli canon lists three kinds of suffering: suffering as pain, the suffering of change, and the suffering inherent in conditioned formations (saṅkhāra-dukkhatā). The Visuddhimagga assigns painful feeling to the first kind, pleasant feeling to the second, and …

Western Papua, a region which borders Papua New Guinea and is officially a part of the Republic of Indonesia, has a long history of conflict with the Indonesian government stretching back to their independence from Dutch colonialism in 1961. While Indonesia sees Papua as legally belonging within the republic, the legitimacy of this claim has been rejected by Papuan liberation movements. This division continues to manifest in violent conflict to this day. While international coverage of this conflict remains minimal, there is significant media coverage and discussion within Indonesia, especially on social media. This social media coverage often favors the …
Secondary School Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Risk And Protective Factors Associated With A School Shooting, Emily M. Hudson, Susana Verdinelli
Secondary School Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Risk And Protective Factors Associated With A School Shooting, Emily M. Hudson, Susana Verdinelli
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
School shootings have devastating impacts on those directly or indirectly exposed to them. Most school shooters are current or former students. Teachers can play a crucial role in intervening, but their support for intervention strategies can vary depending on their perceptions of the underlying associated factors. This generic qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to explore 10 secondary education teachers’ perceptions of the risk and protective factors associated with the perpetration of a school shooting. Teachers identified four interrelated domains shaping the risks for and protections against school shooting perpetration: emotional stability and support, the influence of social networks, the normalization …
