Early Pressure Injury Identification And Intervention In Emergency Department Older Adults Who Are Admitted Into A Community Hospital Intensive Care Unit, Lisa M. Britt Jan 2026

Early Pressure Injury Identification And Intervention In Emergency Department Older Adults Who Are Admitted Into A Community Hospital Intensive Care Unit, Lisa M. Britt

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

A clinical gap was identified when reviewing a hospital acquired pressure injury (HAPI) dashboard from a 369- bed, acute care community hospital located in North Texas. Fifty percent of HAPIs acquired occurred in older adults, aged 60 or higher, who were admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU) from the emergency department (ED). A retrospective review of the electronic health records (EHR) demonstrated that none of the patients had received HAPI prevention interventions while they were in the ED and the inconsistent document of skin assessments resulted in identification of few HAPIs present on admission (POA). The purpose of this …

Shared Decision-Making To Improve The Vaccination Rate Among Older Patients, Muxian Chen

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Background: Vaccines recommended for patients over the age of 50 include those for influenza (Flu), COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pneumococcal disease, shingles, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and a booster dose of the Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine every 10 years (American Association of Retired Persons, 2025). Unfortunately, these vaccines are often not adequately discussed during patient visits or are mentioned only briefly, without a clear plan for administration (American Association of Retired Persons, 2025). A vaccination bundle, which included resources for all vaccines and the opportunity to receive vaccines such as flu, COVID-19, RSV, Pneumococcal, Tdap, shingles, and …

A Chronic Pain Self-Management Quality Improvement Bundle For Veterans, Srijana D. Baniya Jan 2026

A Chronic Pain Self-Management Quality Improvement Bundle For Veterans, Srijana D. Baniya

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Introduction: Veterans often face challenges accessing care services due to limited awareness of available resources for support, Self-care, and mental health (Harding et al., 2019; Patel et al., 2024). Given the high prevalence of Chronic pain and opioid use in this population, Self-management (SM) education and non-pharmacologic interventions are required to address the biological, psychological, and social effects of pain (Bair et al., 2015; Mumba et al., 2024; Nahin, 2017; Higgins et al., 2020). This Quality improvement project aims to determine whether implementing an evidence-based SM bundle for chronic pain improved Pain severity scores and increased understanding of SM strategies. …

This qualitative study examined how white educational leaders experience and make meaning of their racial identity development as they lead adult professional learning focused on racial equity and culturally responsive practice. Grounded in Helms’s White Racial Identity Development (WRID) model and guided by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study explored the lived experiences of ten white leaders across PK–12 and Institution of Higher Education (IHE). Data were collected through three semi‑structured interviews per participant and analyzed using IPA’s six‑step process. Five major themes emerged: transformational experiences that shifted leaders’ understanding of race and privilege; the critical role of white affinity …

Italian Commedia Dell’Arte And Modern American Performance: Comedy As A Cultural Window, Sofia Craig Jan 2026

Italian Commedia Dell’Arte And Modern American Performance: Comedy As A Cultural Window, Sofia Craig

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Commedia dell’Arte, a form of improvisational comedy for the stage developed in the Renaissance, is at least half a millennium old, and leaves minimal records of its content. However, its stock characters still seem to appear in modern media, including television, movies, and current theatre. Commedia characters' noticeable persistence in the modern day suggests that our culture continues to enforce social dynamics which have elements in common with sixteenth-century Italy. This thesis compares Commedia stock characters with their counterparts in modern media, to learn what cultural analysis can be made from their similarities and differences. Most retain traits that keep …

Vacuum Wars: The Belt & Road Initiative’S Rise In The Arab League, Corabeth R. Pierce Jan 2026

Vacuum Wars: The Belt & Road Initiative’S Rise In The Arab League, Corabeth R. Pierce

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The world has shifted and changed in the last decade, resulting in a new world order. The Middle East and North Africa region houses the Arab League, which has drawn the attention of several states throughout the world. China has shown particular interest in the region since its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was first created in 2013. The BRI demonstrates how China has become more involved in the region and that these Arab states are more interested in what China has to offer compared to other countries. With the United States developing more nationalist policies, the European Union facing …

Serum brain-enriched biomarkers are increasingly employed in the clinical evaluation of traumatic brain injury (TBI) to assist with triage, neuroimaging decisions, and prognostication. However, the potential of temporal biomarker trajectories to inform disease monitoring and long-term outcomes remains underexplored. We aim to identify distinct biomarker trajectory (TRAJ) profiles in traumatic brain injury patients and to examine their associations with long-term clinical outcomes. The study included 373, CT-positive Intensive Care Unit (ICU) traumatic brain injury patients (256 with initial Glasgow Coma Scale 3–12) from the Collaborative European Neurotrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI (CENTER-TBI) core study who had at least two serum …

Comparative Visions For U.S. Group-Based Asylum Proposal, Lauren N. Hughes Jan 2026

Comparative Visions For U.S. Group-Based Asylum Proposal, Lauren N. Hughes

Scholarly Articles

Images of asylum seekers and migrants desperate to enter the United States at the southern border abound in U.S. media. Less familiar to the American public, but intertwined with the highly politicized modern migration crisis, is the ever-growing backlog of pending asylum applications before both the Asylum Office and Immigration Courts. This backlog has many causes, including underresourced agencies, a growing number of asylum applicants, the high evidentiary burden and complexities inherent to asylum law, and the lack of counsel for many asylum seekers. In response to this crippling backlog, some scholars propose the adoption of a “group-based” asylum mechanism. …

The Complexities Of The Bilingual Advantage, Melisa Sierra Jan 2026

The Complexities Of The Bilingual Advantage, Melisa Sierra

Behavioral Neuroscience Honors Papers

The bilingual advantage hypothesis, which proposes an enhancement of executive functions in bilinguals, remains heavily debated with inconsistent findings across studies. This study investigated working memory performance in bilingual and monolingual young adults using a modified n-back task with an interruption while recording EEG activity. Participants completed 1-back, 2-back, and 3-back conditions across the pre-interruption phase and a post-break 2-back condition. Behavioral measures (accuracy and response times) were analyzed alongside ERP, focusing on P300 and sustained activity components, were analyzed. Results showed a decrease in accuracy as task difficulty increased from 1-back to 3-back, indicating the expected effects of higher …

Repainting The Republic: How Color Changes The Reception Of Roman Honorific Portraiture, Madelyn Fisher Jan 2026

Repainting The Republic: How Color Changes The Reception Of Roman Honorific Portraiture, Madelyn Fisher

Classics Honors Papers

Most people commonly imagine gleaming, unpainted, white marble under the lights of a museum gallery. However, Roman sculpture was far from how we commonly view it today; the Roman world was full of painted statues. How and why was Roman portraiture stripped of its color? This thesis discusses the development and use of Roman honorific portraiture over the course of the Republic, and the existence of polychromy within the Greco-Roman world. Furthermore, this paper also explores how color was erased from the historical narrative and argues that the understanding of Roman sculpture as polychromatic must be reincorporated back into the …

Casting Long Shadows: Political Influence On Classical Scholarship In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Anna Taylor Jan 2026

Casting Long Shadows: Political Influence On Classical Scholarship In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Anna Taylor

Classics Honors Papers

History, especially Classical history, is not as objective as it is often made out to be. Classical scholarship is not immune to the influence of politics, even if and when a scholar does not explicitly reference it or intend for the scholarship to be political. To explore this influence, this thesis examines two case studies: Edmund Buchner’s work from the 20th century on the so-called “ Horologium Augusti, ” and the rise of regime transition scholarship in the 21st century. Both case studies examine the impact of contemporary politics on a scholar’s perception of a contentious period of Roman history: …

Multi-User Collaboration In Augmented Reality For Beyond-Visual-Line-Of-Sight Bridge Inspection, Joel Murithi Runji, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bridge inspection traditionally relies on scaffolds, snooper trucks, and aerial robots for hard-to-reach areas beyond the visual line of sight of inspectors. This study automates the collaborative inspection workflow for multiple users when inspecting hard-to-reach bridge sections by interfacing low-cost multimodal sensors mounted on a magnetically wheeled climbing robot with augmented reality devices in a cyber-physical system. Non-destructive and visual sensors provide near real-time information of automated steel thickness measurements and visual observations of corrosive regions, respectively. The visual sensors also support robot teleoperation. The cyber-physical system is evaluated for its user-friendliness and performance. The system performance is quantified by …

Rosenwald Rural School Libraries, Suzanne Marie Stauffer Jan 2026

Rosenwald Rural School Libraries, Suzanne Marie Stauffer

Faculty Publications

The Rosenwald Rural School Libraries Program was created as an adjunct to the Rosenwald Rural Schools Program, which funded the construction of 4,977 rural Black school buildings in fifteen Southern states, 395 of them in Louisiana. However, it soon became apparent that providing textbooks was not enough to promote literacy and develop self-directed reading among students. The officers and agents of the Fund realized fairly early in the Rural Schools Program that there was a want of reading materials in the South in general. Beginning in 1927, the Rosenwald Fund began providing collections of graded fiction and non-fiction books to …

Trade Openness And Economic Growth In Africa: Goods Or Services?, Fe Doukouré Charles Jan 2026

Trade Openness And Economic Growth In Africa: Goods Or Services?, Fe Doukouré Charles

Journal of African Trade

This study examines the impact of trade openness in goods and services on economic growth across Africa, utilizing panel data for all 54 countries from 1980 to 2022. The analysis, conducted at both continental and regional economic community levels, finds that trade openness generally exerts a positive effect on economic performance. However, a significant regional heterogeneity emerges. Notably, a decoupling is observed between goods trade expansion and strong GDP growth in Central and East Africa, a weaker relationship in Northern and Southern Africa, and a similarly decoupled pattern for services trade and GDP growth in most regions, except for a …

An Empirical Examination Of Law Student Attitudes Toward Legal Writing With Generative Ai, Abigail L. Perdue Jan 2026

An Empirical Examination Of Law Student Attitudes Toward Legal Writing With Generative Ai, Abigail L. Perdue

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

Amid mounting predictions that generative artificial intelligence (AI) will substantially disrupt legal education, legal writing professors grapple with how and when to integrate generative AI into the classroom. While some believe that it should be woven into existing courses and integrated across the curriculum, even in the first year, others contend that it is better reserved for discussion in upper-level courses dedicated to AI-assistance. Yet it remains unclear which approach will best prepare graduates for the modern practice of law. Indeed, some scholars caution that permitting law students to use generative AI to complete their legal writing coursework, particularly in …

Ties Of Influence: The Armistead-Winston Network And Elite Mobility From Virginia To The Southern Frontier., Mindy L D Bates Jan 2026

Ties Of Influence: The Armistead-Winston Network And Elite Mobility From Virginia To The Southern Frontier., Mindy L D Bates

Theses

This thesis examines how the Armistead and Winston families leveraged intergenerational kinship networks to preserve and reproduce elite authority as they migrated from colonial Virginia to the southern frontier. Rather than viewing migration as an individual pursuit, this study demonstrates that family alliances, shared resources, and long-standing ties shaped opportunity and authority across generations. Using family papers, letters, land deeds, wills, journals, and family trees, this project highlights how these connections functioned as forms of social capital that guided settlement, land acquisition, and community leadership on the frontier. This study serves as a guide for understanding how kinship networks operated …

Bridging The Gap: Strengthening The Integration Of Theoretical Knowledge And Practical Application Among Social Work Students In Practicum Education., Franzeska Sampson-Bacchus

Publications and Research

This study examined challenges Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students face in connecting classroom learning to field practice. It explored: (1) barriers to applying theory, (2) the role of faculty and field instructors in supporting integration, and (3) effective educational interventions. A survey was given to students in capstone and field placement courses. Findings revealed that students often struggle due to nervousness, fear of making mistakes, and difficulty translating theory into practice. While some supervision included discussions linking theory to practice, many students reported these conversations were inconsistent. Supervision often emphasizes agency tasks over reflective learning. Three key themes were …
