Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Introduction: Pancreatic cancer is characterised by severe mid-back and epigastric pain caused by tumour invasion of the coeliac nerve plexus. This pain is often poorly managed with standard treatments. This clinical trial investigates a novel approach in which high-dose radiation (radiosurgery) is targeted to the retroperitoneal coeliac plexus nerve bundle. Preliminary results from a single institution pilot trial are promising: pain relief is substantial and side effects minimal. The goals of this study are to validate these findings in an international multisetting, and investigate the impact on quality of life and functional status among patients with terminal cancer.

Farewell To The Chief: The American Presidential Funeral, Aaron Lee Shuman Mar 2022

Farewell To The Chief: The American Presidential Funeral, Aaron Lee Shuman

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, the author argues that the funeral of an American President constitutes a final venue from which the president can communicate with the American public. In this “speech” the president can make subtle statements about which parts of their lives they want to be remembered for. The work’s argument is illustrated through a case study analyzing the 2018 funeral of President George H.W. Bush, backed by oral history interviews with individuals who had attended the funeral in an official capacity. The author closes the work by insisting that the presidential funeral offers a window into the mind of …

In order to manage Pandemic of Covid -19, Lithuania started unprecedented campaign of promotion of vaccination. One the main instruments which were implemented by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania were Opportunity passport. This document gave permission for those people who were vaccinated to participate in many activities, which were limited to unvaccinated people including opportunity to go to huge supermarkets. However, different approach on management of Pandemic and Opportunity passport created enormous alienation in the society of Lithuania. One of the expressions of this phenomenon was dramatic decrease of trust in Media. By using process trace method I …

Exploring Success And Challenges Of Black Students Taking An English Course Online At An Urban Community College, Latoya N. Bond

Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges have expanded access to higher education and were early adopters of online courses. Among literature on online course performance, Black students are least successful in online learning despite being one of the growing populations at community colleges. This case study investigated the experiences of Black community college students taking an online English course for the first time. These experiences were particularly unique because the students participated during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings indicate that students navigate multiple priorities outside of school, technology challenges, and desire for increased preparation, representation, and support from the campus community. This study assists …

Distributed Leadership: Formal Leadership, Barriers, And Facilitators For Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support, Joseph D. Latimer Mar 2022

Distributed Leadership: Formal Leadership, Barriers, And Facilitators For Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support, Joseph D. Latimer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Currently, educators are exposed to an increased environment of accountability, which prioritizes student academic achievement. That environment of accountability is reinforced by multiple pieces of legislation that also call attention to the implementation of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Even with these federal mandates, educators are continuously overwhelmed implementing MTSS and often leverage distributed leadership practices such as school leadership teams to carry out school improvement tasks. Both distributed leadership practices and MTSS are directly impacted by the practices of formal leadership (i.e., principals). In addition, enablers of and barriers to distributed leadership for MTSS should be investigated. This current …

Rest-Activity Profiles Among Us Adults In A Nationally Representative Sample: A Functional Principal Component Analysis, Qian Xiao, Jiachen Lu, Jamie M Zeitzer, Charles E Matthews, Pedro F Saint-Maurice, Cici Bauer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: The 24-h rest and activity behaviors (i.e., physical activity, sedentary behaviors and sleep) are fundamental human behaviors essential to health and well-being. Functional principal component analysis (fPCA) is a flexible approach for characterizing rest-activity rhythms and does not rely on a priori assumptions about the activity shape. The objective of our study is to apply fPCA to a nationally representative sample of American adults to characterize variations in the 24-h rest-activity pattern, determine how the pattern differs according to demographic, socioeconomic and work characteristics, and examine its associations with general health status.

METHODS: The current analysis used data from …

Checklist Of Zooplankton Of The Halda River, Chattogram, Bangladesh, Md. Safiqul Islam, M.A. Azadi, Munira Nasiruddin, Md. Tajul Islam

Journal of Bioresource Management

The River Halda is one of the important natural breeding grounds of Indian major carp (Labeo rohita, Labeo calbasu, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala) in Bangladesh for its unique physicochemical and biological properties of water. The productivity of the Halda ecosystem mainly depends on the plankton diversity. Zooplankton directly affects the productivity of the Halda River ecosystem. Research work was conducted for the two years extending from January 2017 to December 2018 to identify the zooplankton community of the Halda River. A total of 71 species of zooplankton under 37 genera belonging to 9 groups were identified. The dominant …

We compiled hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope compositions (δ H and δ O) of leaf water from multiple biomes to examine variations with environmental drivers. Leaf water δ H was more closely correlated with δ H of xylem water or atmospheric vapour, whereas leaf water δ O was more closely correlated with air relative humidity. This resulted from the larger proportional range for δ H of meteoric waters relative to the extent of leaf water evaporative enrichment compared with δ O. We next expressed leaf water as isotopic enrichment above xylem water (Δ H and Δ O) to remove the …

Replicas Of Social Change: Examining Reflections Of Religious Shifts In Japanese Society Through Literary Depictions Of Kitsune Characters, Sophia Pressler Mar 2022

Replicas Of Social Change: Examining Reflections Of Religious Shifts In Japanese Society Through Literary Depictions Of Kitsune Characters, Sophia Pressler

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the roles of female kitsune (fox) characters in Japanese literature in different historical eras: the Heian period (794-1185), the Edo period (1603-1868), the Meiji period in addition to the period before the end of World War II (1868-1945), and the modern day (late twentieth to early twenty-first centuries). The goal of this analysis of kitsune folk tales, legends, and stories is to reunite the ‘folk’ with their folklore - providing evidence of how the content of folk tales, legends, and other stories are shaped by their contexts and thus serve as valuable historical records of the lives …

The Differential Effects Of Prenatal Exercise Training Type On Maternal Glucose Metabolism: A Secondary Data Analysis Of A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial, Stephanie Prostko Mar 2022

The Differential Effects Of Prenatal Exercise Training Type On Maternal Glucose Metabolism: A Secondary Data Analysis Of A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial, Stephanie Prostko

Theses and Dissertations

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) complicates 10-12% of pregnancies worldwide and poses significant, immediate, and long-term health risks to both the mom and baby. Importantly, consistent research demonstrates participating in sufficient levels of exercise during pregnancy may effectively manage maternal glucose levels, thereby potentially decreasing the risk of GDM. Most of these studies however, restricted their investigations to exposing pregnant women only to aerobic exercise. Previous studies in non-pregnant populations showed various exercise training types, such as resistance and combined (resistance + aerobic) training, elicited positive, independent effects on glucose metabolism, yet similar effects in pregnant women are unclear. PURPOSE: To …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Traditionally, library data has been designed for the use and consumption of humans, and it is not integrated with the Semantic Web. If we transform library data into linked open data, it will increase the visibility and usage of library data on the Semantic Web. Within the past few years, the calls for transforming library data into linked open data have become more and more frequent. In order to increase the value and discoverability of library data, libraries have been exploring options for making library data available and useful outside of the data silos of the library world through the …

The Aesthetic Impact Of The Garden Of Eden, David Fenner Mar 2022

The Aesthetic Impact Of The Garden Of Eden, David Fenner

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

No garden in the history of the world has had a greater impact on gardens and gardening than the Garden of Eden, as expressed in the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religions, regardless of whether the Garden of Eden ever existed. Yet, given evidence in the texts of the stories of Eden of its unchanging nature, and given that all gardens are naturally dynamic, Eden does not qualify to be a true garden. In addition to the story’s impact on gardens and gardening, Eden is aesthetically impactful because it is from appreciation of the story as a morality tale that we …

Using Expert-Elicitation To Deliver Biodiversity Monitoring Priorities On A Mediterranean Island, J Peyton, M Hadjistylli, I Tziortzis, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Biodiversity monitoring plays an essential role in tracking changes in ecosystems, species distributions and abundances across the globe. Data collected through both structured and unstructured biodiversity recording can inform conservation measures designed to reduce, prevent, and reverse declines in valued biodiversity of many types. However, given that resources for biodiversity monitoring are limited, it is important that funding bodies prioritise investments relative to the requirements in any given region. We addressed this prioritisation requirement for a biodiverse Mediterranean island (Cyprus) using a three-stage process of expert-elicitation. This resulted in a structured list of twenty biodiversity monitoring needs; specifically, a hierarchy …

Risk Regulation And Management Against Illegal Wildlife Trade: Europe And America, Olonyi Bosire Mar 2022

Risk Regulation And Management Against Illegal Wildlife Trade: Europe And America, Olonyi Bosire

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

The source or initial crime in the illegal wildlife trade chain is mostly committed beyond the shores of North America and Europe. However, the two regions continue to be massive destination markets and key transit hubs for illegal wildlife products. Illegal trade networks are shadowy and therefore problematic to study. This helps explain the wide valuation of illegal wildlife trade currently estimated by the Global Environment Facility (“GEF”) as ranging between 7 and 23 billion dollars per annum.

Policies and strategies to pre-empt or respond to illegal wildlife trade keep evolving as appreciation grows for the previously underestimated complexities, …

An Opportunity That Should Not Be Missed: Applying Chinese Policy That Promotes Efficient Air Conditioning To Countries That Need It, Xiaopu Sun, Houfu Yan, Shekun Wang, Tad Ferris

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

As the world warms, the growing use of air conditioners (“ACs”) and other cooling equipment becomes essential for human comfort and public health. In addition, cooling-equipment energy and refrigerant consumption also presents tremendous climate mitigation opportunities. The most efficient ways to capture much of the climate benefit lie in the hands of a small number of AC manufacturing and exporting countries, including China, which manufactures over 80% of global room ACs with a large amount of this cooling equipment destined for export. This article highlights one of China’s policies, the “Same Line, Same Standard and Same Quality” policy (“Same-Line …
