Parents' Reports Of Children's Physical And Sedentary Behavior Engagement Among Parents In Weight Management, Catherine Van Fossen, Haley Kiser, Callie Lambert Brown, Joseph Skelton, Keeley Jean Pratt

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between demographics, family exercise participation, family discouragement of exercise, and the children's physical and sedentary behaviors to identify specific areas of physical activity intervention for children with parents engaged in medical weight management (MWM).

Methods: Parents (n = 294) of children aged 2-18 years old were recruited from two university MWM programs to complete a one-time survey. Bivariate analyses tested associations.

Results: Parents reported that sedentary activity was higher for children who identified as racial minorities (t(141) = -2.05, p < 0.05). Mobile phone and tablet use was higher for adolescents compared to school age and young children (H(2) = 10.96, p < 01) Exercise game use was higher for racial minority children compared to white children (U = 9440.5, z = 2.47, p ≤ 0.03). Male children (t(284) = 1.83, p < 0.07), children perceived to have a healthy weight status (t(120) = 4.68, p < 0.00), and younger children (t(289) = 1.79, p < 0.08) all engaged in more strenuous physical activity. Family exercise participation (t(162) = -2.93, p < 0.01) and family discouragement of exercise (U = 7813.50, z = -2.06, p ≤ 0.04) were significantly higher for children in racial minority families.

Conclusions: Future work should determine methods to engage children …

The aim of the current study was to characterize ovarian reserve parameters and IVF outcomes in women with a history of poor ovarian response (POR) treated with intraovarian injection of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP). Reproductive age women (N=510; age range 30-45yo) diagnosed with POR based on Poseidon criteria were included in the study. PRP treatment resulted in higher AFC, higher serum AMH, lower serum FSH, and a higher number of mature oocytes and cleavage and blastocyst stage embryos. After PRP injection, 22 women (4.3%) conceived spontaneously, 14 (2.7%) were lost to follow up, and 474 (92.9%) attempted IVF. Among …

Phenotypic Disruption Of Cuticular Hydrocarbon Production In Hybrids Between Sympatric Species Of Hawaiian Picture-Wing Drosophila, Thomas J. Fezza, Matthew S. Siderhurst, Eric B. Jang, Elizabeth A. Stacy, Donald K. Price Mar 2022

Phenotypic Disruption Of Cuticular Hydrocarbon Production In Hybrids Between Sympatric Species Of Hawaiian Picture-Wing Drosophila, Thomas J. Fezza, Matthew S. Siderhurst, Eric B. Jang, Elizabeth A. Stacy, Donald K. Price

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Interspecies hybrids can express phenotypic traits far outside the range of parental species. The atypical traits of hybrids provide insight into differences in the factors that regulate the expression of these traits in the parental species. In some cases, the unusual phenotypic traits of hybrids can lead to phenotypic dysfunction with hybrids experiencing reduced survival or reproduction. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in insects are important phenotypic traits that serve several functions, including desiccation resistance and pheromones for mating. We used gas chromatography mass spectrometry to investigate the differences in CHC production between two closely related sympatric Hawaiian picture-wing Drosophila species, Drosophila …

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article presents outcomes from a Workshop entitled “Bioarchaeology: Taking Stock and Moving Forward,” which was held at Arizona State University (ASU) on March 6–8, 2020. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the School of Human Evolution and Social Change (ASU), and the Center for Bioarchaeological Research (CBR, ASU), the Workshop's overall goal was to explore reasons why research proposals submitted by bioarchaeologists, both graduate students and established scholars, fared disproportionately poorly within recent NSF Anthropology Program competitions and to offer advice for increasing success. Therefore, this Workshop comprised 43 international scholars and four advanced graduate students with a …

Me, Myself And My Digital Double: Extending Sara Greene’S Stealing (Identity) From The Poor To The Challenges Of Identity Verification, Michele E. Gilman Mar 2022

Me, Myself And My Digital Double: Extending Sara Greene’S Stealing (Identity) From The Poor To The Challenges Of Identity Verification, Michele E. Gilman

All Faculty Scholarship

Identity is an essential part of the human condition. When one’s identity is stolen or when a state rejects a citizen’s identity, the consequences can be devastating to one’s notion of selfhood as well as undermine their economic security. In Stealing (Identity) from the Poor, Sara Greene explores the serious harms suffered by low-income people who are victimized by identity theft. She explains that our plutocratic regime of identity theft laws serves the interests of wealthier Americans at the expense of those experiencing poverty.

This Essay extends Greene’s analysis and framing to the harms of identity verification systems, particularly in …

Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKD) is the most common cause of congenital nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. Although recognition of the disease spectrum has recently expanded, data describing its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are limited. In this prospective international cohort of 254 patients (131 adults and 123 children) with PKD, we used validated measures to assess the impact of disease on HRQoL (EuroQol 5-Dimension Questionnaire, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Generic Core Scale version 4.0, and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Anemia) and fatigue (Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Fatigue and Pediatric Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue). Significant variability …

In Pursuit Of Important Goals: Nostalgia Fosters Heroic Perceptions Via Social Connectedness, Margaret A. Kneuer, Jeffrey D. Green, Scott T. Allison

Heroism Science

Research on the theoretical order causally linking heroism to social connectedness and inspiration does not exist to our knowledge (Allison & Green, 2020). We propose that nostalgia is a source of heroism because of the social nature of nostalgic memories. We designed two studies, one correlational and one experimental, to test how nostalgia relates to pursuit of an important goal, through increasing social connectedness, heroic perceptions, and inspiration. Online participants completed an ordinary writing task (Study 1) or were randomly assigned to either a nostalgic or ordinary writing task (Study 2), followed by measures of social connectedness, heroic perceptions, inspiration, …

“Hol Ynowh”, Maria Bullon-Fernandez

Accessus

This essay is a response to a series of essays on hope and healing in Gower’s Confessio Amantis. It highlights and develops a common thread found in the essays: to Gower in order to heal, we need to accept that the cure for an illness may not restore us completely to our former selves but may make us just “hol ynowh.” And by accepting, we can find peace.

Gower In Exile, Joel Fredell Mar 2022

Gower In Exile, Joel Fredell

Accessus

The articles in Hope and Healing reveal John Gower's interest in an inclusive approach to human suffering, but also a clear-eyed look at its suffering. The experience of Amans in the Confessio Amantis, exiled from the love court of Venus, represents a powerful vision of love-agony as a central form of human suffering, not a cliche of love poetry.

Exploring The Absence Of A Black Lives Matter Movement In Egypt, Farah Dewedar Mar 2022

Exploring The Absence Of A Black Lives Matter Movement In Egypt, Farah Dewedar

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Movements combating racial segregation have existed for centuries, persisting even through tough circumstances such as a global pandemic. The process of examining calls for racial equality throughout history, such as the remarkable 1960s American Civil Rights and the 21st century BLM movements, can unravel the fundamental elements behind the success of a movement. The presence of audible black voices, massive media coverage and social awareness have proven to be essential in the upheaval of a movement. The fact that Egypt lacks black celebrities, uncensored media and any affiliation to dark-skinned individuals and/or Africans, helps to perpetuate the injustice suffered by …

The Anthropology Of Religion, And Question Of Methodology, Michel Sherif Mikhail Mar 2022

The Anthropology Of Religion, And Question Of Methodology, Michel Sherif Mikhail

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Anthropology, being an inherently interdisciplinary discipline, is a promising approach to the forever perplexing subject: Religion. Driven by a quest to understand the Humanity of humans—to widen the perspective of the “other”, it had an inevitable encounter with religion. And just as every other discipline, it had its share of war wounds with challenges in either definitions, methodology, or the outcomes of the study of religion. In this review, I am looking into the chaotic outcomes that is far from rewarding for the “tidy mind”, the methodology behind the outcomes, and potential solutions for these challenges.
