Is It Because I'M International: Unpacking Experiences Of International Instructors? Via Critical Communication Pedagogy As Aligned With Cultural Wealth, Yea-Wen Chen, Molly Wiant Cummins

Communication Faculty Publications - Archive

Given the relatively invisible yet growing presence of international academics on U.S. campuses, this study investigates the lived negotiations of “international instructors” across disciplines via critical communication pedagogy (CCP) as aligned with a pedagogy of cultural wealth. We place “international instructors” within quotation marks to challenge a territorial linear logic of the world, and also to facilitate a new space for rethinking academic labors and capitals. Aligned with a pedagogy of cultural wealth, CCP with key commitments to identity, power, culture, and language in the context of pedagogy is an appropriate lens to examine the lived experiences of “international instructors” …

School-Based Health Clinics And Student Outcomes In New York City Public Schools, Jacqueline Rosado Mar 2022

School-Based Health Clinics And Student Outcomes In New York City Public Schools, Jacqueline Rosado

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Schools have made efforts to improve outcomes for poor, Black, and Latino students, but disparities persist. Education policies in the United States are not addressing the structural inequities in schools and any external influences that contribute to the low achievement of Black, and Latino students living in poverty. The research in this study highlights inadequate or lack of healthcare services as a contributing factor. This results in a host of problems children bring with them to schools such as attention disorders and chronic absenteeism. In order for schools to mitigate these educational and health challenges, they must have the resources …

Multiservice Business And Social Mobility: Reform To Lift Community Leaders, Jared C. Nicholson Mar 2022

Multiservice Business And Social Mobility: Reform To Lift Community Leaders, Jared C. Nicholson

Denver Law Review

In 2020, Senator Elizabeth Warren launched her presidential campaign in Lawrence, Massachusetts—an economically struggling former mill city. F&M Multiservices was across the street from her press conference. Multiservice businesses pervade urban communities with large immigrant populations, providing a mix of multilingual services like tax preparation, travel, and translation. Multiservice businesses have long been viewed skeptically in legal literature as they are typically analyzed through the lens of immigration law and scrutinized due to legitimate concerns about fraud. This Article analyzes the value of multiservice businesses from the perspective of urban law and poverty law and argues that multiservice businesses like …

Admitting Evidence Of An Accused's Uncharged Misconduct Under The Doctrine Of Objective Chances: Before A Judge May Consider Evidence Of An Uncharged Incident To Decide Whether There Has Been A Suspicious Coincidence, Must The Accused Claim That The Incident Was An Accident?, Edward J. Imwinkelried

Denver Law Review

“The man who wins the lottery once is envied; the one who wins it twice is investigated.” –United States v. York Evidence of an accused’s uncharged misconduct—testimony about a crime other than the one the accused is presently charged with—can be so prejudicial that Federal Rule of Evidence 404(b), which governs the admissibility of such evidence, generates more published opinions than any other Federal Rules of Evidence provision. The Rule provides that the prosecutor may not offer evidence of an accused’s uncharged misconduct to show that the accused has a personal, subjective bad character and then argue that their bad …

Righteous: What Holocaust Rescuers Can Teach Us About A More Altruistic Society, Jill Bodnar

Graduate Student Research Symposium

Stories about Holocaust rescuers are not well known to the general American public. These unsung heroes were a small subset of non-Jews from across Europe who went against the dark climate of antisemitism and racial cleansing led by Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 40s. As the reality of the Final Solution grew, these rescuers made the moral decision to risk their lives to save innocent Jewish friends, neighbors, and strangers from capture and death. On top of the rarity of their actions, after the war they often did not speak of their work, largely because they did not see …

Gendered Norms In Community-Based Engagement: Oral Histories Of The Women In The Elsinore Bennu Think Tank For Restorative Justice, Kathleen Burch

Graduate Student Research Symposium

The state of the criminal justice system in the United States is one in need of repair. A local Pittsburgh group – the Elsinore Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice – challenges its members and the community to engage in restorative justice. The group comprises professors, returning citizens, police officers, and lawyers to initiate change through restorative justice in communities impacted by crime.

The Elsinore Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice (EBTT) Oral History Project at Duquesne University uses the methodology of oral history to gather stories of change, inspiration, and trauma from EBTT members. I will analyze the aural …

A Constitutional Theory Of Territoriality: The Case Of Puerto Rico, Joel Colón-Ríos, Yaniv Roznai Mar 2022

A Constitutional Theory Of Territoriality: The Case Of Puerto Rico, Joel Colón-Ríos, Yaniv Roznai

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article offers an analysis of the relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States that, unlike most of the existing literature, goes beyond discussions of the jurisprudence of U.S. courts and avoids providing merely descriptive or justificatory accounts. Using the tools of constitutional theory, we seek to describe the nature of what we call the “basic structure of territoriality,” the way that structure reproduces itself, and the possibility of its replacement. The basic structure of territoriality, we argue, is comprised by ten fundamental legal rules and five principles. Although those principles are not legally enforceable, they inform in important …

Trump V. Vance: The Distraction Argument And Absolute Presidential Immunity, Mitchell Lewis Blackstone Mar 2022

Trump V. Vance: The Distraction Argument And Absolute Presidential Immunity, Mitchell Lewis Blackstone

Denver Law Review

In 2018, Cyrus Vance Jr., the New York County District Attorney for Manhattan, opened a criminal investigation into then-President Donald J. Trump on suspicion that he violated state law. Vance served a subpoena duces tecum on Mazars USA, the financial accounting firm for then-President Trump, directing it to produce then-President Trump’s personal and business-related financial information. In response, then-President Trump asserted that his status as President of the United States entitled him to categorical, absolute immunity from the subpoena because compliance with said subpoena would unduly distract him from his constitutional duties. Although this was not the first time that …

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will produce world-leading neutrino oscillation measurements over the lifetime of the experiment. In this work, we explore DUNE’s sensitivity to observe charge-parity violation (CPV) in the neutrino sector, and to resolve the mass ordering, for exposures of up to 100 kiloton-megawatt-calendar years (kt-MW-CY), where calendar years include an assumption of 57% accelerator uptime based on past accelerator performance at Fermilab. The analysis includes detailed uncertainties on the flux prediction, the neutrino interaction model, and detector effects. We demonstrate that DUNE will be able to unambiguously resolve the neutrino mass ordering at a 4⁢𝜎 (5⁢𝜎) …

Strange Alliance: An American, A Nazi, And The Battle Of The Bulge, James J. Weingartner

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

One of the stranger episodes in the history of World War II occurred over a period of 90 hours in the Belgian village of La Gleize in December 1944. During the bloody Battle of the Bulge, Hal McCown, a major in the U.S. 30th Infantry Division, was captured by troops of the Nazi Waffen SS and taken to La Gleize, where Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Joachim Peiper had established his headquarters. Peiper commanded a battlegroup whose orders were to capture crossings over the Meuse river, thus opening the way to Antwerp, the primary German objective. It was also …

An Evaluation Of Tractors Tested At The Nebraska Tractor Test Lab And The Effect Of Epa Emission Standards Based Upon Average Pto Horsepower And Fuel Efficiency, Dalton Erickson

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Newly released tractor models are tested to ensure they meet advertising claims. This thesis utilizes tractor test data to analyze performance trends in tractors based upon their power take off (PTO) horsepower and fuel efficiency and it evaluates how the average fuel efficiency of tractors was affected by the introduction of emission standards by the United States Environmental Protection Agencies. In conclusion, tractors have shown continuous improvement and growth in both fuel efficiency and PTO horsepower, and emission standards have had a small, positive effect on tractors’ average fuel efficiency.

American Foreign Direct Investment In Morocco: How Can We Help?, Dylan Patrick

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

As the flurry of modern-day threats begins to take their toll on the world, it has never been more crucial to examine interstate relationships. In this pursuit, this paper investigates contemporary American foreign direct investment efforts in Morocco by asking the following questions: (1) what areas of the Moroccan economy are in the most trouble; (2) how has the presence of American foreign direct investment impacted Morocco; and (3) how can these American-led efforts be improved? By answering these questions using case studies, this paper provides policy recommendations that can begin to alleviate some of the problems facing the Northwest …

Clinical Evaluation Of An Auto-Segmentation Tool For Spine Sbrt Treatment., Yingxuan Chen, Yevgeniy Vinogradskiy, Yan Yu, Wenyin Shi, Haisong Liu

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Purpose: Spine SBRT target delineation is time-consuming due to the complex bone structure. Recently, Elements SmartBrush Spine (ESS) was developed by Brainlab to automatically generate a clinical target volume (CTV) based on gross tumor volume (GTV). The aim of this project is to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of ESS auto-segmentation.

Methods: Twenty spine SBRT patients with 21 target sites treated at our institution were used for this retrospective comparison study. Planning CT/MRI images and physician-drawn GTVs were inputs for ESS. ESS can automatically segment the vertebra, split the vertebra into 6 sectors, and generate a CTV based on the …

A Challenging Yet Motivating Journey: The Experiences Of Young Adult Parents With Serious Mental Health Conditions In The Usa, Kathryn Sabella, Amanda Baczko, Ian A. Lane, Laura Golden, Emma Pici-D’Ottavio, Murron O’Neill

Faculty Publications (Peer-Reviewed)

In recent decades the average age of becoming a parent has increased, the rate of teen pregnancies has decreased, and a new developmental period of emerging adulthood is marked by diverse pathways into adulthood. Today, those who become parents in young adulthood (18–24 years old) and their children may be vulnerable to poor outcomes observed in teen parents (13–19 years old) of previous generations. Young adults with serious mental health conditions (SMHC) who encounter additional challenges navigating young adulthood and tend to parent earlier than their peers may be at particularly increased risk of poor outcomes. To date, little research …

A Qualitative Analysis Of How Individuals Utilized The Twitter Hashtags #Notokay And #Metoo To Comment On The Perpetration Of Interpersonal Violence, Katherine W. Bogen, Prachi H. Bhuptani, Michelle Haikalis, Lindsay M. Orchowski

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study examined how individuals describe the nature of interpersonal violence perpetrated against them using the Twitter hashtags #NotOkay and #MeToo. Iterative qualitative coding of 437 tweets resulted in four major themes (i.e., the nature of violence and tactics utilized, the identity of the perpetrator, the location of the assault, and whether the perpetrator was held accountable). Subthemes nested beneath perpetrator identity included whether the perpetrator was known, as well as perpetrator gender identity. Subthemes nested beneath perpetrator tactic included the presence of multiple perpetrators, whether the assault was a crime of opportunity, engagement in physical aggression, utilization of …

The Book Of Poetry : The Han Canonization : A Love Song And A Moral Exemplum, Zong-Qi Cai

How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast

This episode discusses how the anonymous author of “Prefaces to the Book of Poetry” turned “Osprey,” the first of the 305 Shijing poems, from a lively love song into a moral exempla by means of gender switching. It also explains that such imaginative gender switching was made possible by classical Chinese grammar, especially its ungendered use of pronouns and its frequent omission of sentence subjects.

For grazing herbivores, dung density in feeding areas is an important determinant of exposure risk to fecal- orally transmitted parasites. When host species share the same parasite species, a nonrandom distribution of their cumulative dung density and/or nonrandom ranging and feeding behavior may skew exposure risk and the relative selection pressure parasites impose on each host. The arid-adapted Grevy's zebra ( Equus grevyi ) can range more widely than the water-dependent plains zebra ( Equus quagga ), with which it shares the same species of gastrointestinal nematodes. We studied how the spatial distribution of zebra dung relates to ranging and …
