Type IV secretion systems (T4SS) are versatile nanomachines responsible for the transfer of DNA and proteins across cell envelopes. From their ancestral role in conjugation, these systems have diversified into a superfamily with functions ranging from horizontal gene transfer to the delivery of toxins to eukaryotic and prokaryotic hosts. Recent structural and functional studies have uncovered unexpected architectural variations not only among Gram-negative systems but also between Gram-negative and Gram-positive systems. Despite this diversity, a conserved set of core proteins is maintained across the superfamily. To facilitate cross-system comparisons, we propose in this review a unified nomenclature for conserved T4SS …

Mechanomodulation, the process of altering cellular behavior through applied mechanical forces, plays a critical role in physiological processes and has substantial implications for cancer therapy, immunology, and drug development. However, precise and efficient stimulation of nonadherent cells remains a major challenge, limiting the investigation of mechanotransduction pathways and the development of targeted therapeutics. Here, we developed an acoustofluidic platform named Suspension-cell Targeted Response to Excitation via Acoustofluidic Mechanomodulation (STREAM) to enable precise, high-throughput stimulation of suspension cells. STREAM accomplishes this using 101.14-megahertz high-frequency surface acoustic waves to deliver controlled mechanical stimulation at a throughput of 500,000 cells per minute. STREAM …

Integrated Optimization Of Underground Mine Ventilation Using Hardy Cross, Monte Carlo Simulations, And Machine Learning Techniques: A Step Toward Sustainable Mining, Hussein A. Saleem
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Underground mine ventilation is crucial for ensuring worker safety, air quality, and operational efficiency. Effective optimization of ventilation systems reduces energy consumption, enhances airflow distribution, and minimizes risks associated with harmful gases and fire hazards. This study proposed an integrated framework combining the Hardy Cross (HC) method, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and machine learning (ML) techniques to optimize the ventilation system at the Jabal Sayid mine in Saudi Arabia. The HC method was employed to provide deterministic baseline airflow calculations, while the MC simulations accounted for uncertainties in resistance values and environmental conditions, generating probabilistic distributions of key parameters. Among …

Teacher-implementing scaffolding is fundamental in teaching that was disrupted by the sudden move to emergency remote teaching during the pandemic. A review of research found trends based on grade and subject and that teacher’s responsiveness was the main contingent processes reported. Based on this a survey was developed and an exploratory factor analysis was completed. An analysis of the survey results found differences in teacher agency, self-efficacy, and the supports used when comparing in-person and online teacher-implemented scaffolding. Qualitative results further support findings and describe teachers’ perspective on the change to the environment, adaptations made, and hinderances noted while supporting …
Making Sense: Envy In Libanius' Declamation 30, Andrew Scholtz
Making Sense: Envy In Libanius' Declamation 30, Andrew Scholtz
Middle Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (MEAMS) Faculty Scholarship
Declamation, a genre famous for its sometimes extravagant fictions, has lately been approached as a vehicle for declaimers to reflect on realities familiar to them and their audiences. Reading Libanius' rarely discussed Declamation 30 in just such a self-reflective key, I argue that it explores the mindset of the phthoneros, the "envious man," as a way to make sense of risks posed by unscrupulous rivals. To shed light on this sense-making, I analyze High- and Late-Imperial emotion scripts foregrounding envy’s power to catalyze the formation of dysfunctional networks within and around competitive situations.

The Relationship Between Celebrity Worship And Psychotherapy Preferences, Sean Frydman M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Celebrity worship (CW) is defined as an increased admiration toward a celebrity figure which may lead to excessive interest in their lives (McCutcheon et al., 2021). Intense CW has been found to be associated with a variety of pathological traits, suggesting that individuals with higher CW might benefit from psychotherapy (Sansone & Sansone, 2014). However, no research is available regarding psychotherapy preferences for this population. Research to date has found positive correlations between accommodating patients’ treatment preferences and greater treatment satisfaction and outcomes, stronger alliance, and reduced attrition (Iacoviello et al., 2007; Lindhiem et al., 2014; Swift et al., 2011, …

Introduction: Migraines are a disabling neurological condition affecting 12-15% of the population. Migraines are characterized by a unilateral throbbing headache lasting between 4 and 72 hours, often accompanied by photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, or vomiting. Until the approval of the first CGRP antagonist, Erenumab, in May 2018, the prophylactic treatment for migraines relied on non-migraine-specific medications, such as antihypertensives and antiepileptics. Studies have been done to determine the efficacy and safety of the new medications, but few have directly compared them to older non-migraine-specific medications used for prevention. The purpose of this paper is to compare the efficacy of CGRP …

Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) requires systemic anticoagulation to prevent thrombotic events within the circuit. The use of unfractionated heparin has been the traditional anticoagulant of choice. Bivalirudin, a direct thrombin inhibitor, offers an alternative that has theoretical and observed benefits. The purpose of this clinical review is to evaluate whether bivalirudin provides superior safety and efficacy compared to UFH in ECMO patients.
Methods: PubMed was searched with a specific search strategy using key terms “Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation” AND “indirect anticoagulants” AND “deep vein thrombosis”. Operators and filters narrowed the results to four relevant, quality articles for review.
