Evaluating Technology-Based Self-Monitoring Of Performance With Reinforcement For Students With Disabilities, Madeline Rose Risse

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the use of a technology-based self-monitoring intervention augmented with differential reinforcement and focused on self-monitoring of performance to increase task completion and reduce off-task behavior in students with disabilities. Three students with disabilities served in an inclusive 5th-grade general education classroom participated in the study. A concurrent multiple baseline design across participants with an ABC sequence was used to evaluate the intervention outcomes. A general education teacher of the participating students implemented the intervention that involved student training on self-monitoring of performance (SMP) using an app and delivery of reinforcement contingent on task completion and accuracy of …

Writing Literature Reviews In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz Mar 2022

Writing Literature Reviews In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz

Great Commission Research Journal

Because of the knowledge explosion taking place, literature reviews in church-based research are needed more than ever. Summaries and syntheses of previous research make this knowledge available to practitioners and help researchers focus on what remains unknown. In contrast to empirical studies, literature reviews rely on previously published studies to make conclusions and advance theory. These studies may include both church-based research and more general research that is not particularly Christian. In contrast to meta-analyses which focus on synthesizing statistical information, literature reviews focus on conceptual synthesis and theory advancement. To write a literature review, authors must first choose a …

How Diversity Fails: An Empirical Investigation Of Organizational Status And Policy Implementation On Three Public Campuses, Derria Byrd Mar 2022

How Diversity Fails: An Empirical Investigation Of Organizational Status And Policy Implementation On Three Public Campuses, Derria Byrd

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Although diversity has been a guiding preoccupation in higher education for several decades, organizational diversity practice, i.e., what happens when colleges and universities implement diversity plans, is rarely a subject of inquiry. As a result, there is relatively little empirical understanding of why diversity has failed to significantly advance racial equity on college campuses. In response, this ethnographic, collective case study draws on interviews with 54 respondents, archival and organizational documents, and campus observations to interrogate diversity practice on three campuses of different status in one public system in the U.S. This study employs Bourdieu’s theory of practice, specifically …

The Continuity Mindset For Christian Mission, Jack T. Davison Mar 2022

The Continuity Mindset For Christian Mission, Jack T. Davison

Great Commission Research Journal

Missionaries from the Global North regularly serve as trainers for Christians in the Global South. From personal experience, missionaries are regularly seen as being qualified to do this work simply because of their position. Rather than missionaries assuming they are competent purely on the basis of their titles, I believe they should instead practice the Continuity Mindset for Christian Mission, a mindset that emphasizes the continuity of one’s identity and ministry in one’s home culture with one’s identity and ministry in the host culture. This practice includes elements of vulnerable mission, nonresidential mission, tentmaking, cultural intelligence, and authentic leadership. I …

Exploring Physical Educators' Efficacy Beliefs, Perceptions Of Importance And Openness For Social And Emotional Learning, Caitlin Olive, Karen Lux Gaudreault, Kelly Simonton, Michael Hemphill, Yu Yu Hsiao

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

In response to changes in student performance and behavior, social and emotional learning (SEL) has received increasing attention and interest in education (Bartlett, 2019). Physical education (PE) has also given increased attention to implementing SEL in physical activity spaces (Richards et al., 2019). Thus, it is important to evaluate teachers’ beliefs about SEL in order to understand their willingness to implement this curriculum effectively. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships of several environmental and personal perceptions about teaching on PE teachers’ beliefs for implementing SEL. Physical educators (N = 157; 49.7% male) from the United States …

Including Latinx Communities In Academic Libraries: A Theoretical Approach To Information Access, Andrew A. Wakelee, Kim M. Thompson Mar 2022

Including Latinx Communities In Academic Libraries: A Theoretical Approach To Information Access, Andrew A. Wakelee, Kim M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

While more Latinx students continue to enroll in higher education, physical, intellectual, and socio-cultural barriers to information may continue to impede their success and inclusion. A tripartite theoretical model that examines physical, intellectual, and socio-cultural information access provides insights for academic libraries to better meet Latinx students’ information needs and include them in campus life. This paper gives an overview of the theoretical framework along with practical steps libraries can take to improve information equity.

Evaluation Of Delivery Service In Rural Areas With Cav, Panos Prevedouros, Abdulrahman Alghamdi Mar 2022

Evaluation Of Delivery Service In Rural Areas With Cav, Panos Prevedouros, Abdulrahman Alghamdi

CSET Project Reports

Urban areas have been experiencing automated delivery technology for several servings of food or a few bags of groceries, with automated (robotic) mini vehicles. The benefits of such automated delivery may be much more significant for rural areas with long distances due to the large potential savings in travel time, travel cost, and crash risk. Compared to urban areas, rural areas have older and more disabled residents, longer distances, higher traffic fatality rates, and high ownership of less fuel-efficient vehicles such as pickup trucks. An evaluation of connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) delivery service in rural areas was conducted. A detailed …

The Sinner’S Prayer: An Inappropriate Ritual For Thai Christian Culture And A Suggested Replacement, Kelly M. Hilderbrand Mar 2022

The Sinner’S Prayer: An Inappropriate Ritual For Thai Christian Culture And A Suggested Replacement, Kelly M. Hilderbrand

Great Commission Research Journal

The practice of encouraging seekers to say the sinner’s prayer has become commonplace in Thailand. However, the practice is relatively recent and has developed out of Western individualistic assumptions. It is not an explicitly biblical practice and has serious practical problems, producing decisions for Christ that often do not result in a long-term commitment to Christianity. The practice also runs counter to many Thai cultural norms and can be harmful to evangelism and discipleship in Thailand. This article suggests a different approach, the prayer challenge.

Rural Adults Report Worse Covid-19 Impacts Than Urban Adults, Shannon M. Monnat Mar 2022

Rural Adults Report Worse Covid-19 Impacts Than Urban Adults, Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

COVID-19 infection and mortality rates have been higher in rural than in urban America since late-2020. However, the consequences of COVID-19 extend far beyond the deaths that it has caused. This brief uses data from a national survey of working-age adults (ages 18-64) collected in February and March of 2021 to describe rural-urban differences in reported impacts of COVID-19 on physical and mental health, employment, financial wellbeing, and social relationships. Nearly 3 out of 5 respondents (58%) reported that COVID-19 has had a negative impact on their lives. Across most outcomes, rural residents fared worse than their urban peers. Recovery …

Presence Of Neotropical Otter (Lontra Longicaudis) At High Elevation Between Watersheds, Juan Pablo Esparza-Carlos, Pablo César Hernández-Romero, Jaime Antonio Escoto Moreno

Western North American Naturalist

The neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis) is associated with freshwater systems and is generally found at elevations lower than 1500 m asl. Its diet is based on fish and crustaceans. We present 3 photorecords of the neotropical otter at the divide between 2 hydrological basins in the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve, Jalisco, México. The photos were taken at an altitude near 2000 m asl, and one of them was >600 m from a water source. The area does not present optimal conditions for the presence of otter since water flows are low, fish are absent, and crustaceans are …

Knowledge Or Awareness Of Non-Communicable Diseases And Their Associated Risk Factors Among University Students In Fiji: A Cross-Sectional Study, Awadhesh Kumar Shirotriya, Kavita Batra

School of Medicine Faculty Research

Introduction: Chronic diseases (aka Non-communicable diseases, NCDs) contribute to the global burden of morbidity and mortality, with a significant share of premature deaths among low-and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Fiji. The early exposure to the risk factors of NCDs affects the entire life course; knowledge or awareness of adolescents towards NCDs and associated risk factors is critical for health promotion. This study aims to investigate the knowledge or awareness level of chronic conditions and their risk factors among Fijian students. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a sample of 338 university students was recruited using the paper as well as web-based …

Improving Capture Methods For Neonate Ungulates, Matthew T. Turnley Mar 2022

Improving Capture Methods For Neonate Ungulates, Matthew T. Turnley

Theses and Dissertations

The capture of neonate ungulates has played an integral role in studies of habitat selection, phenology, survival, and other topics of ecological interest. However, neonates can be difficult for researchers to locate and capture. Neonate ungulates are born in habitats with reduced visibility, frequently spend time in a concealed, prone position, and may display cryptic coloration. In an attempt to improve researchers' likelihood of locating and capturing neonate ungulates, multiple capture methods have been developed. Much remains unknown about biases associated with capture methods and how to further improve capture methods once biases are understood. Our objectives were to determine …

The Experiences And Expressions Of Compassion Among Critical Care Nurses, Mark S. Walker Mar 2022

The Experiences And Expressions Of Compassion Among Critical Care Nurses, Mark S. Walker

Dissertations

Compassion is a core attribute of nursing practice and is associated with improved patient satisfaction and outcomes. For the last several decades, nurse researchers have been focused on the concept of compassion fatigue. Only recently has compassion appeared in nursing literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and expressions of compassion among critical care nurses.

This dissertation includes a literature review of compassion within nursing education and practice, how it is currently defined, and a review of the empirical data. Next, two interpretative phenomenological qualitative studies were conducted. One study explored the experiences of compassion …

Pear (Pyrus spp.) is one of the most consumed fruits in China, but the pear production has to confront the growing threat from fatal diseases. In this study, we report two incidences of stem canker and twig dieback disease on pear plants, which led to death of pear seedlings (approximately 10% of total plants) in Guangxi and Jiangsu provinces. Using a combination of morphological and molecular diagnoses, along with pathogenicity test, the causal agent of the disease in these two locations was identified to be the fungus Neofusicoccum parvum. However, the isolates were divided into two clades: CY-2 …

The Medium Is The Message: A Summer Book Club On Abolition, Sarah J. Schendel

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This past summer, together with six law students and a fellow law professor, I participated in a small, informal book club around Mariame Kaba’s essential collection of pieces on prison and police abolition, We Do This 'Til We Free Us. Kaba’s probing, thoughtful critiques address privacy, civil liberties and surveillance; the limitations of “justice” within our current system; and the adultification of Black children, an issue with serious impact on family, education, and of course criminal law. Kaba's book is both accessible and deeply challenging; reading it led to powerful conversations about both the issues discussed and the limited way …

Working Paper No. 58, Auro Ex Oleum: Departing The American Gold Standard*, Zakhary L. Roth

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that the character of the United States dollar fundamentally changed over the course of the 20th century as it moved away from its being rooted in the gold standard. As the global economy transitioned into the 20th century and the United States began establishing itself as a cornerstone of global trade, the dollar evolved into the standard currency of the world economy, changing significantly along the way as it moved from a gold-backed standard to the reserve currency of the international petroleum trade. These changes are reflected in U.S. foreign and monetary policy throughout this …
