Harmon Murray: Black Desperado In Late Nineteenth-Century Florida, Billy Jaynes Chandler
Florida Historical Quarterly
North Florida was far from the Wild West, but for a time in the late nineteenth century it ceded little in the notoriety of its outlaws to that famous region. If Harmon Murray, leader of the “north Florida gang,” has not taken his place in history alongside Billy the Kid or Jesse James, it was hardly his fault. Though he was soon forgotten, at the time of his death in late summer 1891 Murray’s name was known throughout the state and beyond. The reasons for Murray’s quick rise to fame had much to do with his skill, courage, and sheer …

The Other Side Now: What Blanding Prisoners Of War Told The Wehrmacht, Robert D. Billinger, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Fifty years after the arrival of German prisoners of war in Florida their story is still little known.1 Admittedly their presence was minimal since only about 4,000 out of the 378,000 German prisoners who spent time in America were detained in the state. Florida was one of forty-five states with POWs, and the base camp at Camp Blanding, with its fifteen side camps, was only one of 155 base camps in the continental United States.

In any enumeration of American historians of Florida who have significantly advanced the craft and expanded the field, one would name George Rainsford Fairbanks (1820-1906), our state’s first serious historian in the English language and charter member of the Historical Society of Florida in 1856; Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871), first American scholar to collect and copy documentary materials for the history of Florida from archives in Spain; Woodbury Lowery (1853- 1906), whose two volumes, The Spanish Settlements within the Present Limits of the United States,1 first placed Florida historiography on a professional footing and established standards of research and citation …

"Florida And The British Investor Revisited": The William Moore Angas Papers At The University Of Florida, Frank Orser
Florida Historical Quarterly
In his 1954 article Alfred P. Tischendorf discussed briefly the role of fifteen British-owned companies in Florida around the turn of the century. 1 He concluded that these enterprises were devoted to development and attracting British immigrants. Generally little is known about British business practices in Florida since very few records exist in the United States. Details about two of the larger English companies, the Land Mortgage Bank and the Florida Syndicate, can now be examined through their business files, recently acquired by the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida and accessioned as the William Moore Angas …
