Pixels & The Polls: The Impact Of Female Role Models In Television Media On The Perceived Electability Of Women, Amy Griffin

Undergraduate Honors Theses

It’s no secret that women are extraordinarily underrepresented in government and misrepresented in media. To better understand the impact of fictional television media featuring a positive female leader on the public’s perception of the electability of women and on their willingness to support women's campaigns, this study aimed to measure participants’ voting choices after viewing a positive fictional female leader. 104 college-age participants viewed fifteen-minute segments taken from episodes of CBS’s political drama Madam Secretary featuring either a male president or a female Secretary of State as each navigated political challenges. The participants completed vignette election experiences between nonpartisan municipal …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Cellular plasticity contributes to intra-tumoral heterogeneity and phenotype switching, which enable adaptation to metastatic microenvironments and resistance to therapies. Mechanisms underlying tumor cell plasticity remain poorly understood. SOX10, a neural crest lineage transcription factor, is heterogeneously expressed in melanomas. Loss of SOX10 reduces proliferation, leads to invasive properties, including the expression of mesenchymal genes and extracellular matrix, and promotes tolerance to BRAF and/or MEK inhibitors. We identify the class of cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein-1/2 (cIAP1/2) inhibitors as inducing cell death selectively in SOX10-deficient cells. Targeted therapy selects for SOX10 knockout cells underscoring their drug tolerant properties. Combining cIAP1/2 inhibitor …

Progressive Multifocal Fibrosing Neuropathy: Description Of A Novel Disease., Fabian A. Mendoza, Jennifer Bagley, Michael Gochfeld, Marinos Dalakas, John Farber, Sergio A. Jimenez

Scleroderma Center Faculty Papers

Entrapment peripheral neuropathies are clinically characterized by sensory impairment and motor deficits. They are usually caused by mechanical injuries, but they are also a frequent manifestation of metabolic diseases, toxic agent exposure, or systemic fibrotic disorders. Here we describe the clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of a novel progressive fibrotic disorder characterized by progressive multifocal fibrosing neuropathy. We identified two patients who presented with severe and progressive peripheral neuropathic symptoms sequentially affecting multiple sites. These patients presented with severe and progressive multifocal, sequentially additive peripheral neuropathic symptoms. Extensive nerve conduction and radiological studies showed the sequential development of multifocal motor …

Ethnic-Racial Socialization Experiences Of Mexican American Youth, Katherine Donahey Mar 2022

Ethnic-Racial Socialization Experiences Of Mexican American Youth, Katherine Donahey

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) is associated with positive academic and mental health outcomes for adolescents. These socialization messages come in 3 forms: cultural socialization, preparation for bias, and promotion of mistrust. The ERS literature has mainly focused on African American populations but is expanding to include other demographics, such as Latinx individuals. Since much of ERS research has been conducted from the perspective of parents, the current study sought to add to the literature by evaluating adolescent experiences with ERS in their own words. The study was conducted using focus groups with late adolescents and young adults …

Symbolic Semantic Memory In Transformer Language Models, Robert Kenneth Morain Mar 2022

Symbolic Semantic Memory In Transformer Language Models, Robert Kenneth Morain

Theses and Dissertations

This paper demonstrates how transformer language models can be improved by giving them access to relevant structured data extracted from a knowledge base. The knowledge base preparation process and modifications to transformer models are explained. We evaluate these methods on language modeling and question answering tasks. These results show that even simple additional knowledge augmentation leads to a reduction in validation loss by 73%. These methods also significantly outperform common ways of improving language models such as increasing the model size or adding more data.

Religiousness And Risky Behaviors Mediated By Moral Attitudes, Benjamin Curth Mar 2022

Religiousness And Risky Behaviors Mediated By Moral Attitudes, Benjamin Curth

Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is a lot of existing research on religiousness in adolescents and risky behaviors such as sex alcohol. However, one understudied aspect of it is why the connection. Very few studies have explored this area, and a mediation model may aid in that research. For this study, a sample size of 364 adolescents ages 14-18 were surveyed (M = 15.64). Some mediations models have been attempted which suggests that it should be successful. In this study, a mediation model is used to explore the relationship between religiousness and risky behaviors in adolescents mediated by conservative attitudes. After finding significant …

Role Of Fluoride Doping In Low-Temperature Combustion-Synthesized Zroxdielectric Films, Aritra Sil, Elise A. Goldfine, Wei Huang, Michael J. Bedzyk, Julia E. Medvedeva, Antonio Facchetti

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Zirconium oxide (ZrOx) is an attractive metal oxide dielectric material for low-voltage, optically transparent, and mechanically flexible electronic applications due to the high dielectric constant (κ ∼14-30), negligible visible light absorption, and, as a thin film, good mechanical flexibility. In this contribution, we explore the effect of fluoride doping on structure-property-function relationships in low-temperature solution-processed amorphous ZrOx. Fluoride-doped zirconium oxide (F:ZrOx) films with a fluoride content between 1.7 and 3.2 in atomic (at) % were synthesized by a combustion synthesis procedure. Irrespective of the fluoride content, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, atomic-force microscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy data indicate that all F:ZrOx …

"More Than Conquerors" The Evangelical Kingdom Model At Work In One Of America's Protestant Megachurches, Kaylin Hill Mar 2022

"More Than Conquerors" The Evangelical Kingdom Model At Work In One Of America's Protestant Megachurches, Kaylin Hill

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at 12Stone Church in Atlanta, Georgia, this report explores the strategies that 12Stone (like other evangelical megachurches) implements in order to grow and strengthen a church membership that consists of tens of thousands of members. The most prevalent of these strategies is the demographic-based rhetoric that 12Stone uses to draw in its main demographic, which is politically right-wing, white, Christian men. The rhetoric utilizes a doctrinal model that I refer to as the Evangelical Kingdom Model to impress upon members the evangelical mission and culture, the experience of which revolves around the local church level. …

Effects Of Pore-Forming Peptides (Melittin And Magainin 2) On The Phospholipid Bilayer Interior, Elmukhtar Ehmed Alhatmi

Dissertations and Theses

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are one of the most promising solutions to drug-resistant bacteria. Melittin and magainin 2 are two of the most representative and extensively studied AMPs. In this research, I investigated the interaction of these two AMPs with three models of cell membranes: 80% POPC 20% POPG, 40%POPC 40% POPE and 20% POPG, and 80%POPC 20%POPG plus 30% mole fraction of cholesterol. Time-resolved fluorescence emission and fluorescence anisotropy decays of the fluorescent probe 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) were analyzed to determine the effects of AMPs on the bilayer headgroup packing and changes in the interior of the phospholipid bilayer during the …

Word Imageability Is Associated With Expressive Vocabulary In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberly R. Lin, Lisa Wisman Weil, Audrey Thurm, Catherine Lord, Rhiannon Luyster Mar 2022

Word Imageability Is Associated With Expressive Vocabulary In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberly R. Lin, Lisa Wisman Weil, Audrey Thurm, Catherine Lord, Rhiannon Luyster

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

Throughout typical development, children prioritize different perceptual, social, and linguistic cues to learn words. The earliest acquired words are often those that are perceptually salient and highly imageable. Imageability, the ease in which a word evokes a mental image, is a strong predictor for word age of acquisition in typically developing (TD) children, independent of other lexicosemantic features such as word frequency. However, little is known about the effects of imageability in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who tend to have differences in linguistic processing and delayed language acquisition compared to their TD peers. This study explores the extent …

Academic Leadership Is A Full-Contact Sport: Reflections From A Law School Dean, Rooksby, Jacob H.

Santa Clara Law Review

Leadership in any setting is hard, often physically as well as emotionally. Academic leadership requires a full-dimensional, mind-body-soul effort that uniquely calls upon one’s baseline character, positionality, and preparation for leadership. Our willingness and ability to read the word as we also read the world combine to shape our approach and range as leaders. And ultimately, our legacy is our imprint on people. This article shares the views of a law school dean on how life experiences, leadership lessons, and book learning intertwine to inform our humanity and charter our influence on people and organizations.

A library of thio- and selenourea derivatives is used to adjust the kinetics of PbE (E = S, Se) nanocrystal formation across a 1000-fold range (kr = 10−1 to 10−4 s−1), at several temperatures (80–120 °C), under a standard set of conditions (Pb : E = 1.2 : 1, [Pb(oleate)2] = 10.8 mM, [chalcogenourea] = 9.0 mM). An induction delay (tind) is observed prior to the onset of nanocrystal absorption during which PbE solute is observed using in situ X-ray total scattering. Density functional theory models fit to the X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) support a Pb2(μ2-S)2(Pb(O2CR)2)2 structure. Absorption spectra …

The Effect Of Soot Models In Oxy-Coal Combustion Simulations, Kamron Groves Brinkerhoff Mar 2022

The Effect Of Soot Models In Oxy-Coal Combustion Simulations, Kamron Groves Brinkerhoff

Theses and Dissertations

Soot in coal combustion simulations is often ignored due to its computational complexity, despite significant effects on flame temperature and radiation. In this research, a 40 kW oxy-coal combustion system is modeled using Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and a semi-empirical monodisperse coal soot model. Simulation results are compared to experimental measurements of temperature, species concentrations, and soot concentration. Cases where soot is modeled are compared with cases where soot is neglected to determine the accuracy benefits of modeling soot. The simulations were able to replicate experimental results within an acceptable level of error. Including soot in the simulations did not …

Multipath Mitigation In Frequency Selective Channels With An Emphasis On 5g Cellular Mobile Networks And Aeronautical Mobile Telemetry Applications, Farah Arabian

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the role of polarization, combining, and equalization operating over frequency-selective channels to improve the reliability of wireless communications systems in terms of BER for two applications: 5G mobile networks (operating in the mmWave band and NR FR1), and aeronautical mobile telemetry systems (operating in L band). The equivalent discrete-time models for a variety of spatial combining techniques at 5G mmWave bands were derived to investigate the performance of co-located cross-polarized antenna elements when polarization diversity is used and also when a combination of spatial and cross-polarized antennas is exploited. In both cases, ML combining has the lowest …

New York City's wastewater monitoring program tracked trends in sewershed-level SARS-CoV-2 loads starting in the fall of 2020, just before the start of the city's second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak. During a five-month study period, from November 8, 2020 to April 11, 2021, viral loads in influent wastewater from each of New York City's 14 wastewater treatment plants were measured and compared to new laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases for the populations in each corresponding sewershed, estimated from publicly available clinical testing data. We found significant positive correlations between viral loads in wastewater and new COVID-19 cases. The strength of the …

Non-Reciprocal Parity-Time Symmetry Breaking Based On Magneto-Optical And Gain/Loss Double Ring Resonators, Yuma Kawaguchi, Andrea Alù, Alexander B. Khanikaev Mar 2022

Non-Reciprocal Parity-Time Symmetry Breaking Based On Magneto-Optical And Gain/Loss Double Ring Resonators, Yuma Kawaguchi, Andrea Alù, Alexander B. Khanikaev

Advanced Science Research Center

In this paper, we explore the operation of a nonreciprocal non-Hermitian system consisting of a lossy magneto-optical ring resonator coupled to another ring resonator with gain and loss, and we demonstrate that such a system can exhibit non-reciprocity-based broken parity-time (PT) symmetry and supports one-way exceptional points. The nonreciprocal PT-phase transition is analyzed with the use of both analytical tools based on coupled-mode theory and two-dimensional finite element method simulations. Our calculations show that the response of the system strongly depends on the regime of operation – broken or preserved PT-symmetry. This response is leveraged to show that the system …

Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Cell With A Barrier Layer Free Oxygen Electrode And Phase Inversion Derived Hydrogen Electrode, Yongliang Zhang, Nansheng Xu, Qiming Tang, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

High-temperature solid oxide cells (SOCs) have fundamental advantages in efficiency and product rate over their low-temperature counterparts. However, the commercial development of SOCs is hindered by cost and reliability. To solve the issues, lowering the operating temperature of SOCs is deemed the best solution. Here we report on our effort toward intermediate temperature (IT) SOCs by developing a barrier layer free high-performance oxygen electrode and open structured hydrogen electrode. The results show that the new oxygen electrode provides reasonably good oxygen electrocatalytic activity at IT range for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions and the open structured hydrogen electrode provides low …

Nursing Faculty Research

Falling and fear of falling (FOF) are significant concerns for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). FOF can lead to activity avoidance behavior, a risk factor for increased falls and further functional decline. The significant implications of fear of falling avoidance behavior (FFAB) among PD warrant a literature review. The objective of this review was to explore existing literature on FFAB and identify what is known about this phenomenon in people with PD. This scoping review considered studies including adults 18 years and older diagnosed with PD experiencing FFAB. Using Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews, …
