Trends In The Implementation Of The Cyberchondria Severity Scale: Bibliometric Analysis, Adam C Powell, Cayetana Calderon-Smith
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Cyberchondria, a combination of the words "cyber" and "hypochondriasis," is a condition that is receiving increasing attention from clinicians and researchers globally. Researchers are currently using multiple instruments to quantify it. Furthermore, the instruments have been translated into multiple languages.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the extent to which researchers are measuring cyberchondria using the 33-item Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS) and its 12-item abbreviated version, the CSS-12. It also examined the relative use of cyberchondria instruments in different languages.
METHODS: PubMed and PsycInfo were searched for articles published between May 1, 2019, and December 31, 2024, featuring the …

Safety And Tolerability Of Single And Multiple Daily Oral Doses Of Dried Kratom Leaf Powder In A Randomized Trial In Healthy Volunteers, Marilyn A. Huestis, John Bothmer, Thomas Hudzik, Jack E. Henningfield, Sibyl Swift
Institute of Emerging Health Professions Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Kratom use is rising, increasing the need for safety and tolerability studies of high-quality and well-characterized kratom products in humans. Kratom's risk-benefit ratio, recommended dose, treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), abuse potential, and withdrawal require evaluation. Thus, the safety and tolerability of 4 escalating single and 15 daily dried kratom leaf powder doses in human volunteers were evaluated over 47 days in the largest controlled kratom-administration study to date.
METHODS: A randomized, between-subject, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation study of MitraLeaf kratom powder after single doses (SD), during 15 daily doses (multiple doses; MD), and a 23-day follow-up was conducted in 116 …

Exploring China’S Belt And Road Initiative In Southeast Asia’S Sustainability Agenda: From Growth To Equity?, Munjin Syafik Asy’Ari, Andi Axl Azslam Fadillah, Aswin Baharuddin, Nandito Oktaviano, Abdul Razaq Cangara
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
This article evaluates the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) through the analytical framework of sustainable development. The framework is crucial, as China frequently disseminates sustainability claims to promote the BRI. To assess these claims, it is necessary to examine the realisation of BRI projects alongside the empirical consequences they have generated across recipient countries. Southeast Asia constitutes one of the most prominent target regions for BRI investment. Four Southeast Asian countries occupy a significant position due to the scale and number of projects they have received: Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Each country exhibits distinct political–economic systems and structural conditions, …

Teachers’ Experiences With The Use Of Read-Alouds For Fourth- And Fifth-Grade Students, Shervita Bryant
Teachers’ Experiences With The Use Of Read-Alouds For Fourth- And Fifth-Grade Students, Shervita Bryant
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The research problem addressed in this basic qualitative study was the inconsistent use and implementation of teacher read-alouds among fourth- and fifth-grade teachers in an urban district. Guided by Clark and Peterson’s cognitive process teacher model, Rumelhart’s schema theory, and Gough and Tunmer’s simple view of reading, the purpose of this project study was to explore teachers’ experiences and perceptions regarding their use of read-alouds as part of their regular reading instruction. Two research questions were developed to explore teachers’ experiences of the support received for using the read-aloud. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 fourth- and fifth-grade teachers. Data …

The marine mycobiome is a largely unexplored area of research despite its importance to the environment as a carbon sink, nutrient manager, and as a symbiont of various marine life. With rising temperatures, there is a need to identify the fungi present in these environments to monitor changes in biodiversity and their effect on climate change. Along Tampa Bay, six sites were chosen to collect samples from surface water using a CTD rosette system. The collected water was filtered, and DNA was extracted in order to classify and catalog species of both bacteria and fungi through 16S and ITS sequencing, …

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
Objective
To provide a broad, comprehensive picture of affect regulation in the context of sexual and gender minority stress, this scoping review aims to identify and synthesize methods, methodologies, and available evidence pertinent to emotion regulation and coping in the context of minority stress among sexual and gender minority (SGM) people.
Introduction
SGM people face disproportionately high rates of mental health problems due to experiences of minority stress and lack of social safety. Theories and growing evidence suggest that affect regulation plays a critical role in SGM people’s well-being in the face of minority stress. Researchers have largely studied emotion …
Task-Optimized Brain Parcellations Reveal Latent Functional Organization For Enhanced Connectivity-Based Neuroimaging Classification, Andrew Hannum, Mario A. Lopez
Task-Optimized Brain Parcellations Reveal Latent Functional Organization For Enhanced Connectivity-Based Neuroimaging Classification, Andrew Hannum, Mario A. Lopez
Computer Science: Faculty Scholarship
Brain parcellation schemes are fundamental to neuroimaging, yet general-purpose atlases may obscure the specific functional architecture relevant to a given cognitive task or clinical condition. This reflects a growing consensus that the “optimal” brain map is context-dependent. Here, we introduce a novel framework that validates this principle by generating task-optimized human brain parcellation maps directly from supervised learning objectives. Our method defines functional parcels by grouping brain regions based on the similarity of their contributions to a classifier's decision boundary for a specific goal (e.g., cognitive state decoding or clinical group separation). This approach prioritizes a region's discriminative role over …

Pregnant women are a vulnerable population after disaster. Their health may be improved through community-based support programs in addition to their standard prenatal care. We conducted a prenatal peer support program, Mentors Offering Maternal Support (M-O-M-S), focused on improving mental health in hurricane-affected areas in southern Louisiana. M-O-M-S consists of six biweekly sessions covering pregnancy acceptance, maternal role identification, family and partner relationships, preparation for labor/fears around labor, well-being/safety of self and baby, and post-delivery health and maternal-infant bonding. The program is led by a “mentor”, an experienced mother but not necessarily a clinician or social worker, who guides the …

Interactions among tumor, immune, and vascular niches play major roles in glioblastoma (GBM) malignancy and treatment responses. The composition and heterogeneity of extracellular core matrix proteins (CMPs) that mediate such interactions are not well understood. Here, we present an analysis of the clinical relevance of CMP expression in GBM at bulk, single-cell, and spatial anatomical resolution. We show that CMP enrichment is associated with worse patient survival, specific driver oncogenic alterations, mesenchymal state, pro-tumor immune infiltration, and immune checkpoint expression. Matrisome expression is enriched in vascular and leading edge/infiltrative niches that are known to harbor glioma stem cells. Finally, we …

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway plays a crucial role in immune responses and has emerged as a compelling target in cancer therapy. Despite promising preclinical studies, clinical trials of STING agonists have largely failed to deliver durable efficacy, with no agents progressing to phase III trials. This review examines the biological, pharmacological, and clinical barriers limiting STING pathway activation in cancer treatment. We discuss the inherent limitations of STING agonists as well as host-related resistance driven by tumor heterogeneity, immune suppression, and chronic STING activation. Mechanisms of acquired resistance, such as immune checkpoint upregulation and suppression of effector …

Nuclear protein in testis (NUT) carcinoma (NC) represents a rare, clinically aggressive cancer defined by pathognomonic NUT Midline Carcinoma Family Member 1 (NUTM1) gene fusions, with bromodomain and extraterminal domain (BET) protein 4 (BRD4)-NUTM1 being the predominant oncogenic driver. Since its description in 1991, gradual advances have clarified the pathologic mechanisms of NC and its diagnostic methods; however, NC treatment remains a significant challenge. Moreover, diagnostic and treatment approaches for this cancer require further validation and standardization. These guidelines were developed by the Chinese Alliance of Research for NC (ChARN) based on current evidence in …
Wei Xiqin’S Evolutionary Plan For Modern China, Nianhong Qiu
Wei Xiqin’S Evolutionary Plan For Modern China, Nianhong Qiu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This study examines the thinking, practices, and significance of Wei Xiqin (1882- 1952). Born in Germany and educated in various European countries, Wei was a musician and educator who played an active role in the educational reform of the Republic of China. Wei was equipped with modern European thoughts but held deep reverence for Confucianism and other traditional Chinese classics. Examining this contentious figure in the wake of “Chinese Evolutionism” trend, this study investigates the differences between Wei’s evolution theory and the dominant evolution theory during early 20th-century China. Wei’s evolutionism, which I call a type of “Cyclic Evolution,” implies …

The Black Mother-Daughter Developmental Model: A Life Course Framework For Understanding Matrescence, Identity, And Attachment In Black Family Systems, Brianna A. Baker
Publications and Research
This study introduces the Black Mother-Daughter Developmental Model (BMDDM), a life course framework that theorizes the evolving relational, psychological, and cultural dynamics of Black mother-daughter relationships across generations. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 18 Black women aged 18 to 65 and analyzed to examine patterns of attachment, identity development, rupture, and relational repair over time. Findings yielded a five-stage developmental model: (1) Black Matrescence and Prenatal Conditions, (2) Initial Attachment, (3) Separation and Detachment, (4) Negotiation and Reattachment, and (5) Matrescence Redux and Grandmatrescence. Across stages, participants described how gendered racial socialization, maternal …

The Long Goodbye Of The History Of Economic Thought Course In Liberal Arts Colleges In The United States, Humberto Barreto
School of Business and Leadership Working Papers
Economists of a certain age will remember a world in which the history of economic thought (HET) was alive and flourishing. Today, that is not the case. One little-noticed consequence of the elimination of HET from graduate programs in the United States is that the HET course is an endangered species at the undergraduate level. It is not, however, extinct. This paper offers a brief history of HET as a course and explores the extent of the diminution in HET courses in the undergraduate liberal arts college curriculum in the United States. Roughly 40% of 146 schools have a HET …

Automated understanding of driver behavior from vehicular kinematics is vital for safety-aware intelligent transportation systems. However, centralized cloud processing suffers from latency, scalability, and privacy issues. Federated Learning (FL) provides a decentralized alternative but faces two major challenges: (i) non-IID client data due to heterogeneous driving styles and sensors, and (ii) severe class imbalance, as risky behaviors are inherently rare. In this work, we propose a personalized FL framework that uses a shared CNN-LSTM backbone with client-adaptive classifiers and incorporates a cost-sensitive loss to address behavior skew. Evaluated on the UAH-DriveSet dataset, our method achieves 92.60% accuracy and 91.68% macro-F1, …

Wildfires cause unpredictable spread and panic-driven congestion, posing severe challenges to evacuation planning. We present RESCUE (Routing under Evolving Stochastic Congestion and Uncertain Spread in Wildfire Emergencies), a dynamic, risk-aware framework that models the road network as a time-varying weighted graph. RESCUE operates in two stages: (i) a preprocessing phase integrating fire forecasts, traffic density, and distance to assign edge weights, and (ii) a real-time routing phase that adaptively updates paths using a multi-granular strategy distinguishing macro-level disruptions (e.g., rapid spread) from micro-level changes (e.g., local congestion). Two stochastic edge-cost functions are introduced: the Edge-Fire Risk Function (EFRF), estimating road …

We report the synthesis of high-quality 2H-TaS2 nanowires via a controlled two-step conversion process from TaS3 precursors, achieving robust superconductivity with a transition temperature T c ≈ 3.6K, which is significantly higher than bulk 2H-TaS2 (T c ≈ 0.8K). Structural and compositional analyses confirm phase purity and preserved one-dimensional morphology, while magneto transport measurements reveal an enhanced upper critical field μ 0 H c2 (2K)≈5 T, far exceeding the bulk value (μ0Hc2 (0)≈1.17T), attributed to dimensional confinement and suppression of charge-density wave order. Magnetic characterization demonstrates complex vortex dynamics, including flux jumps and a …

BACKGROUND: High-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) assays performed in the central laboratory have long turnaround times. This study evaluates the clinical performance of a novel bedside point-of-care (POC) hs-cTnI assay (i-STAT® hs-TnI) to aid in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction (MI).
METHODS: A prospective multisite cohort study involving emergency department (ED) patients with symptoms suggestive of acute coronary syndrome was conducted at 28 sites across the United States. Serial whole blood samples were collected at 0-1 h and >1-3 h from ED presentation. Primary outcome was MI or non-MI. Sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value (NPV) for MI were calculated with …

Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, caused by a CAG repeat expansion encoding a glutamine tract in nine distinct proteins, present a complex molecular puzzle in which each piece contributes to neurodegeneration. While each of the causative proteins has a distinct function, the downstream consequences of polyQ toxicity are often similar, including protein accumulation, transcriptional dysregulation, somatic CAG repeat instability, disrupted energy homeostasis, compromised synaptic function, and selective neuronal death. This review summarizes emerging insights into how proteins with an expanded polyQ tract disrupt distinct cellular functions, and we examine a multitude of discoveries that are inspiring and reshaping novel therapeutic strategies.

INTRODUCTION: As the population ages, L4-L5 degenerative spondylolisthesis is increasingly common. Posterolateral fusion was long standard; interbody cages are widely used for perceived higher fusion rates.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does adding an interbody cage to posterolateral fusion improve outcomes or reduce complications in elderly patients with grade I spondylolisthesis and severe stenosis?
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 319 adults aged 60-85 who underwent single-level L4-L5 fusion (2011-2018) after failed conservative care. Patients received posterior lumbar fusion (PLIF, n = 155) or posterolateral lumbar fusion (PLF, n = 164). Primary outcomes were Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) change and complications over a …

Background: Computer perception (CP) technologies-including digital phenotyping, affective computing, and related passive sensing approaches-offer unprecedented opportunities to personalize health care, especially mental health care, yet they also provoke concerns about privacy, bias, and the erosion of empathic, relationship-centered practice. At present, it remains elusive what stakeholders who design, deploy, and experience these tools in real-world settings perceive as the risks and benefits of CP technologies.
Objective: This study aims to explore key stakeholder perspectives on the potential benefits, risks, and concerns associated with integrating CP technologies into patient care. A better understanding of these concerns is crucial for responding to …

Sequence alignment is essential for genomic research and clinical diagnostics, yet detecting complex rearrangements such as inversions, duplications, and gene conversions remains challenging due to allele complexity and limitations of current methods. We introduce VACmap, a non-linear mapping approach to enhance the detection and representation of all genetic variations. VACmap improves duplication detection from 20% to 90% in the Challenging Medically-Relevant Genes (CMRG) benchmark and improves characterization of complex inversions in repetitive regions and gene conversion events. It improves resolving clinically significant loci, including the LPA gene (with repetitive KIV-2 units linked to coronary heart disease), GBA1 and STRC genes …

Background: Accurate and timely identification of upper respiratory tract pathogens can improve patient management by decreasing unnecessary additional testing, reducing the cost of care, and informing antimicrobial stewardship. We evaluated the FDA-cleared Diasorin LIAISON PLEX® Respiratory Flex (RSP Flex), a highly multiplexed, rapid nucleic acid detection assay that can identify 14 viral and 5 bacterial respiratory pathogens.
Methods: In total, 215 residual patient upper respiratory tract specimens were tested using the RSP Flex assay and results compared to standard-of-care (SOC) molecular testing.
Results: Positive percentage agreement (PPA) was 100% for the following targets: adenovirus, human coronavirus, Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis, …

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a potentially curative treatment for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Since the initiation of newborn screening (NBS), survival rates have improved significantly, but the impact of HCT upon neurodevelopment for patients with SCID requires more investigation. We performed a cross-sectional study of subjects with SCID in North America to assess the impact of NBS, transplant conditioning regimen, and genotype on neurodevelopmental outcomes after HCT. 69 subjects with SCID from 17 PIDTC centers (excluding those with ADA deficiency), ages 6-16 years, received comprehensive standardized neurodevelopmental testing of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional function. Compared with the normative population, …
