An Examination Of Summer Melt For Trio Talent Search And Upward Bound Alumni, Jasmine D. Clay, Jasmine C. Lewis
Dissertations
College access programs provide middle and high school students with essential skills to prepare them for a successful transition to postsecondary education. TRIO Talent Search (TS) and Upward Bound (UB) are federally funded programs established to strengthen the likelihood that students from underserved groups will graduate high school and pursue higher education. Both programs offer support to low-income and first-generation students to ensure equitable access to higher education. While these programs offer a holistic approach to student development, including personal and professional support, some students from underserved groups experience challenges during the summer months that prevent them from enrolling in …
The Effect Of The Sleep Promotion Interventions On Incidence Of Delirium In Intensive Care Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Sarah Lee
Nursing Masters Papers
Sleep is vital to our health, and prolonged sleep deprivation can result in serious health problems. Yet, patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) commonly experience sleep deprivation due to the environment and necessary treatments. High noise levels, bright lights, frequent patient care activities, mechanical ventilator desynchrony, pain, anxiety, and medications are the main factors that disrupt patients’ sleep architecture and affect sleep quality. Sleep deprivation is a significant contributor to the development of delirium, which is associated with poor patient outcomes and added financial burden. Implementation of sleep promotion interventions may decrease the incidence of this detrimental illness. The …
Authentic Low-Stakes Practice To Make Meaning Lasting For Ells: Creating Vocabulary Chants And Songs To Enhance The Word Generation Curriculum, Lori Cohen
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
This curriculum creation is designed to supplement the Word Generation (WordGen) vocabulary program for middle school students. It adds songs and chants of the weekly focus words for use as a mnemonic device to remember and synthesize word meaning. The WordGen curriculum is heavily based on reading and writing and English Language Learners (ELLs) are at a disadvantage when tasked with learning and understanding academic vocabulary due to the short length of time for mastery (Cummins, 1999; Collier, 1987; Thompson, 2017). This curriculum is inspired by the desire to appeal to ELLs who would respond favorably to music or kinesthetic …

Proposal Of A Clinical Practice Guideline For A Non-Pharmacologic Music Listening Complementary Pain Therapy, Alec Smith, Sean Lawler, Joel Griffith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: As many as 65% of post-surgical patients experience moderate to severe pain. Post-surgical pain is associated with a variety of negative physical and psychological consequences for patients. Currently, medical treatments for postoperative pain rely heavily on pharmaceuticals which can cause adverse side effects. Opioid analgesics, most notably, cause hypoventilation, apnea, and in some cases, dependence and addiction. In 2017, in response to state and national opioid prescription reduction programs, The Joint Commission (TJC) began requiring healthcare institutions to provide patients with non-pharmacologic pain treatment modalities. These pain treatment modalities, also known as complementary therapies, include music listening interventions, which …

Food Insecurity And Infant Feeding Methods Among Mothers With Infants In Children's Hospital, Sara Brobeck
Food Insecurity And Infant Feeding Methods Among Mothers With Infants In Children's Hospital, Sara Brobeck
Department of Nutrition Student Projects
Abstract
Introduction: Although breastfeeding is more sustainable and affordable compared to infant formula, mothers who are food insecure are shown to breastfeed less and turn to formula more. This paradox may result from beliefs surrounding diet and breastfeeding. For example, evidence shows that mothers may believe that the quality of their breastmilk may be negatively affected by insufficient diet and stress which is caused by food insecurity.
Objective: The objective was to find an association between food insecurity and method of infant feeding (breastfeeding or combination of breastmilk and formula).
Methods: Food insecurity surveys were administered to 31 mothers in …

The Reciprocal Relationship Between Group Therapeutic Relationships And Group Member Symptom Improvement: An Archival Analysis, Aileen Marie Rands
The Reciprocal Relationship Between Group Therapeutic Relationships And Group Member Symptom Improvement: An Archival Analysis, Aileen Marie Rands
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers and clinicians have long recognized that therapeutic relationships play a fundamental role in client symptom change during treatment. At the same time, it has been proposed that improvement in client symptoms is associated with improvement in therapeutic relationships. To date, very few studies have investigated this reciprocal relationship; even fewer have examined group therapeutic relationship factors. The present study is an archival analysis on Group Questionnaire (GQ) (i.e., positive bond, positive work, and negative relationship) and Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45) data that aims to analyze the reciprocal relationship between group therapeutic relationships and client symptom change. More specifically, this study …

Settler-Author Allyship In Centering Indigenous Ecologies: Communal Will Through Collective Environmental Guilt In This Tender Land And Caleb's Crossing, Elena Marie Arana
Theses and Dissertations
The January 2021 edition of PMLA housed an entire cluster on "Indigenous Literatures and the Anthropocene," in which at least four of the eight non-Indigenous contributors directly addressed and supported a call for learning from and collaborating with Indigenous voices. The unanimity of the discussion dissolves somewhat drastically when considering exactly how this should be done, leading Melanie Taylor to voice one of the framing questions of the cluster: "If it is increasingly clear that not all members of Anthropos are equal drivers of the Anthropocene, and that not all are uniformly compromised by its havoc, how can we begin …

The Protective Potential Of Family Relationship Strength As It Relates To Suicidal Thoughts And Behavior In Ace-Exposed Adolescents And Emerging Adults, Collin Wright
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are known to cause higher incidences of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors (STBs) in young people. Family Relationship Strength (FRS) is a known protective factor against STBs. However, there is little research on the protective nature of FRS once ACEs have been experienced by a young person. The aim of our analysis is to examine whether the strong protective nature of FRS holds true even in ACE- exposed youth.
Methods: A sample of 139 patients at the Brigham Young University Comprehensive Clinic (aged 12-25) was obtained from the BYU Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network. …

Relationship Between Perceived Coping Capability And Levels Of Academic Self-Efficacy In First Year Prelicensure Nursing Students, Amy Charlton
DNP Projects
Academic self-efficacy and coping capability impact student persistence. Nursing education programs can identify students' experiences to encourage students to persist and potentially impact the national nursing pipeline. More research was needed to examine the relationships between entering nursing student demographics, academic self-efficacy, and student coping capability. First-semester prelicensure nursing students (N = 240) were surveyed to determine any significant relationship between perceived academic self-efficacy and perceived coping capability using a quasiexperimental, descriptive, correlational design. Based on the Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) model, the project investigated the relationships between student profile characteristics, student affective factors, academic outcomes, and professional …

Acknowledging The Relevance Of Elephant Sensory Perception To Human–Elephant Conflict Mitigation, Robbie Ball, Sarah L. Jacobson, Matthew S. Rudolph, Miranda Trapani, Joshua M. Plotnik
Publications and Research
Elephants are well known for their socio-cognitive abilities and capacity for multi-modal sensory perception and communication. Their highly developed olfactory and acoustic senses provide them with a unique non-visual perspective of their physical and social worlds. The use of these complex sensory signals is important not only for communication between conspecifics, but also for decisions about foraging and navigation. These decisions have grown increasingly risky given the exponential increase in unpredictable anthropogenic change in elephants’ natural habitats. Risk taking often develops from the overlap of human and elephant habitat in Asian and African range countries, where elephants forage for food …

Music For The Relief Of Preoperative Anxiety, Tyler G. Roberts
Music For The Relief Of Preoperative Anxiety, Tyler G. Roberts
MSN Capstone Projects
Anxiety is a phenomenon commonly experienced by patients awaiting surgery (Jlala et al., 2010). Anxiety has been linked to negative impacts “on the induction of anesthesia, wound healing, risk of infection, and postoperative recovery” (Stern, 2013). The alleviation of preoperative anxiety is a positive and desired outcome for perioperative patients. An interview with a patient at University Medical Center yielded some insight into the need for the implementation of additional anxiety alleviating intervention. In the interview, the patient reported feeling distress from being able to hear everything that was happening outside of the patient’s preoperative room and feeling a large …
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Using High-Fidelity Simulators, Rebecca Walker
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Using High-Fidelity Simulators, Rebecca Walker
MSN Capstone Projects
Simulation and high-fidelity simulators (HFS) have become an important part of nursing education and its implementation into the curricula. It has become important in enhancing their knowledge and the development of competent nurses by reinforcement of skills that have been previously learned. HFS also increases students' confidence and reinforces their skills and knowledge while introducing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The literature suggests that overall the students have greater retention of CPR skills if HFS is used instead of classical CPR training with low-fidelity simulators (LFS). However, some studies suggest that using HFS does not lead to retention of CPR skills or …
The Impact Of Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy On Alzheimer's Disease, Kelsey Hall
The Impact Of Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy On Alzheimer's Disease, Kelsey Hall
MSN Capstone Projects
The number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) rises daily. This is a devastating disease for the patients, significant others, and families to have to experience. “Epidemiological data confirm what retirees have observed: about 30-50% of those living to their mid-80’s will have suffered a marked loss of cognitive ability, a harbinger of advanced AD, or will have suffered advanced AD. Further, the tragedy of AD affecting loved partners takes an enormous toll on their healthier partners” (Reid et al., 2017).
The current treatment regimen for Alzheimer’s disease includes medication therapy. Evidence has shown that there are only small …
Physics-Guided Machine Learning In Ocean Acoustics Using Fisher Information, Michael Craig Mortenson
Physics-Guided Machine Learning In Ocean Acoustics Using Fisher Information, Michael Craig Mortenson
Theses and Dissertations
Waterborne acoustic signals carry information about the ocean environment. Ocean geoacoustic inversion is the task of estimating environmental parameters from received acoustic signals by matching the measured sound with the predictions of a physics-based model. A lower bound on the uncertainty associated with environmental parameter estimates, the Cramér-Rao bound, can be calculated from the Fisher information, which is dependent on derivatives of a physics-based model. Physics-based preconditioners circumvent the need for variable step sizes when computing numerical derivatives. This work explores the feasibility of using a neural network to perform geoacoustic inversion for environmental parameters and their associated uncertainties from …
