Dragonfly Is Watching You: Artveillance And The Legal Issues Implicated, Yang, Sydney Apr 2022

Dragonfly Is Watching You: Artveillance And The Legal Issues Implicated, Yang, Sydney

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Art law as a practice area can seem innately contradictory. Indeed, at first glance “art” and “law” are concepts that should be on the opposite ends of the spectrum. While art is all about unleashing your imagination and thinking out of the box, law may seem more rigid and orderly as it focuses more on the structured legal system and the enforcement of law by social and governmental institutions. As the art market became more complex and sophisticated in the 20th century, art law has developed into a discrete and increasingly recognized legal field despite the fact that it is …

Technical science and innovation

This paper examines the effects of chitosan, starch, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to improve the surface properties of cellulose-based paper obtained from local raw materials. The polymers are incorporated into the paper polythene by spraying. The results showed that the addition of chitosan to paper polythene, which is made of cellulose fibers, has an improvement in surface properties compared to the effect of other additives. The degree of exposure of starch coincided with the degree of exposure of chitosan, but it resulted in a decrease in the water absorption potential of the paper compared to chitosan at the same concentration. …

Using Supervised Learning Algorithms As A Follow-Up Method In The Search Of Gravitational Waves From Core-Collapse Supernovae, Javier M. Antelis, Marco Cavaglia, Travis Hansen, Manuel D. Morales, Claudia Moreno, Soma Mukherjee, Marek J. Szczepańczyk, Michele Zanolin Apr 2022

Szczepańczyk, Michele Zanolin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a follow-up method based on supervised machine learning (ML) to improve the performance in the search of gravitational wave (GW) bursts from core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) using the coherent WaveBurst (cWB) pipeline. The ML model discriminates noise from signal events by using a set of reconstruction parameters provided by cWB as features. Detected noise events are discarded yielding a reduction in the false alarm rate (FAR) and the false alarm probability thus enhancing the statistical significance. We tested the proposed method using strain data from the first half of the third observing run of advanced LIGO, and CCSNe GW …

Building-Block Approach To The Discovery Of Na8mn2(Ge2se6)2: A Polar Chalcogenide Exhibiting Promising Harmonic Generation Signals With A High Laser-Induced Damage Threshold, Srikanth Balijapelly, Andrew J. Craig, Jeong Bin Cho, Joon I. Jang, Kartik Ghosh, Jennifer A. Aitken, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Amitava Choudhury

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new polar quaternary chalcogenide, Na8Mn2(Ge2Se6)2, has been synthesized using the building-block approach by reacting preformed Na6Ge2Se6 and MnCl2 at 750 °C. The structure consists of layers of [Na(1)Mn(Ge2Se6)]3– stacked perpendicular to the c-axis and sodium ions occupying the interlayer space. An indirect bandgap of 1.52 eV has been calculated using density functional theory, which is expectedly underestimated compared to the observed optical bandgap of 1.95 eV derived from diffuse reflectance spectroscopic measurements in the UV/Vis/NIR region. Magnetic measurements confirm the paramagnetic nature of Na8Mn2(Ge2Se6)2 with an experimental magnetic moment of 5.8 μB in good agreement with the theoretical spin …

BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are experiencing major increases in diabetes and cardiovascular conditions linked to overweight and obesity. Lifestyle interventions such as the United States National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) developed in high-income countries require adaptation and cultural tailoring for LMICs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of "Lifestyle Africa," an adapted version of the DPP tailored for an underresourced community in South Africa compared to usual care.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: Participants were residents of a predominantly Xhosa-speaking urban township of Cape Town, South Africa characterized by high rates of poverty. Participants with body …

Active Resistance By Merchant Vessel Crews During International Armed Conflict Is Not “Direct Participation In Hostilities”, Robert Mclaughlin Apr 2022

Active Resistance By Merchant Vessel Crews During International Armed Conflict Is Not “Direct Participation In Hostilities”, Robert Mclaughlin

International Law Studies

Within the land, air, and cyber conflict contexts, the concept of "civilian direct participation in hostilities" has been subject to intense scrutiny, interpretive endeavor, and operational application over the last several decades. There is a risk, however, that interpretations and applications based on this experience may inappropriately permeate the law of naval warfare, where the scope of application of this concept is considerably narrower. This is because a key difference between allocating law of armed conflict status ashore and at sea is that the law of armed conflict status of people at sea tends to follow the status of their …

Spin Interactions In New Donor-Acceptor Complexes, Ju Chen Apr 2022

Spin Interactions In New Donor-Acceptor Complexes, Ju Chen

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Transition metal complexes ligated by Donor-Acceptor (D-A) biradicals are of interest for probing the degree of electronic coupling between chemically biased radical fragments. The unique nature of their electronic coupling has allowed these systems to serve as ground state analogues of charge separated excited states generated by photoexcitation. We have been interested in how the nature of the acceptor radical affects the magnitude of the electronic coupling matrix element in these biradicals. As such, we have synthesized a new series of D-A semiquinone-verdazyl (SQ-VD) biradical ligands and their transition metal complexes. We have characterized these new complexes by x-ray crystallography, …

Melancolía X A Projection Of Queer Of Color Ambivalence In The 21st Century New Mexico, Anthony Rosendo Zarinana Apr 2022

Melancolía X A Projection Of Queer Of Color Ambivalence In The 21st Century New Mexico, Anthony Rosendo Zarinana

Communication ETDs

This dissertation seeks to elucidate a form of investigation, derived from Jose Esteban Muñoz’s (2006) considerations of brown feelings. By triangulating a base across Queer of Color embodied critiques, I locate a research site in the field of Queer Intercultural Communication to ground the capacity of this project. In this, I work with Queer of Color men in New Mexico, focusing on their feelings about identity and desire as it relates to relational thresholds. By mapping an analytical structure across my own experiences and theirs, I determine to craft a more complicated vantage across our experiences, outlining the socio-cultural pressures …

What Is The Experience Of An International Collegiate Athletes That Play Ncaa Division I And Ii Basketball?, Daniel Gayle

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

This paper explores the complete journey of International Collegiate Athletes (ICAs) that play basketball at a Division I or II National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) school. This study uses Schlossberg’s (1981, 1984, 1995) transition theory to establish how these athletes navigate moving into college, moving through college, and moving out of college. Through semi structured interviews, the study gives insight into the unique experiences, obstacles, pressures, and successes of ICAs, and provides implications for how the experience of ICAs attending college in the U.S. might be improved. The most important aspect for the success of an ICA at their collegiate …

Relativistic Magnetron Powered By Electrons In A High-Energy State, Dmitrii Andreev Apr 2022

Relativistic Magnetron Powered By Electrons In A High-Energy State, Dmitrii Andreev

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A traditional relativistic magnetron is an efficient, high-power source of cm-wave radiation. Typically, a cathode sits inside the interaction region and produces a quickly expanding cathode plasma. However, rapid radial expansion leads to unwanted frequency drift and pulse shortening. Recently, researchers at Technion, in collaboration with the University of New Mexico, proposed to use a split cathode to form a low-energy “squeezed” state by injecting electrons externally into a potential well and squeezing them with a sufficiently strong magnetic field. Technion’s long-pulse experiments achieved a low-energy state, at the output power and efficiency comparable to a physical cathode inside the …

"For All You Know, I Might Be A Black Panther": How The News Media Cultivated White Anxiety In The United States And Became A Modern Panopticon For Black Power, Caitlin Grace Leishman Apr 2022

"For All You Know, I Might Be A Black Panther": How The News Media Cultivated White Anxiety In The United States And Became A Modern Panopticon For Black Power, Caitlin Grace Leishman

History ETDs

Building upon French philosopher Michel Foucault’s analysis of Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, I argue that throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, the news media and resulting culture nurtured and reinforced the postcolonial narratives that associated Blackness with criminality. I analyze the national newspaper coverage for their narrative portrayal of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP). The national media and U.S. government targeted the BPP and Black Power politics to discredit them and the overall movement for Black Liberation. I argue that this media-state project only intensified during the 1970s and into the 1980s with the country’s turn to …

"Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" Ethnic Mexicans, Urbanism, Culture, And Politics In Emerging Silicon Valley, 1940-1980, Alexandro J. Jara Apr 2022

"Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" Ethnic Mexicans, Urbanism, Culture, And Politics In Emerging Silicon Valley, 1940-1980, Alexandro J. Jara

History ETDs

My dissertation explores the Latino experience in Santa Clara County, especially in San Jose. The area, located in Northern California’s Bay Area, is nestled just south of the more popular cities of Oakland and San Francisco, nearly five hundred miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. My examination of the social, cultural, and political activities of Latinos in San Jose provides insight into the community development of ethnic Mexicans away from traditional sites of study in places like Tucson, San Antonio, and Los Angeles. I argue that beginning at mid-century, Latinos moved into the downtown area and helped prevent nearby neighborhoods from …

The Consequences Of Climate Change For Native Bee Assemblages, Melanie R. Kazenel Apr 2022

The Consequences Of Climate Change For Native Bee Assemblages, Melanie R. Kazenel

Biology ETDs

Recent declines in terrestrial arthropod biodiversity highlight the need to pinpoint which taxa and ecosystem services are most threatened, and why. But, for most of the world’s ~20,000 bee species, we lack robust evidence of population trends, and the role of climate change remains surprisingly little studied. I used long-term bee monitoring data from the Sevilleta Long-Term Ecological Research Program (Socorro, NM, USA), along with complementary experimental and observational data, to examine how climate relates to bee abundance and diversity patterns over time and space, and to identify the traits that govern bees’ climate sensitivities. Under climate change, drylands worldwide …

Jesus Woodlą́Ą́Jí Sin: Sounding A Self-Determined Navajo Christian Church, Renata Yazzie Apr 2022

Jesus Woodlą́Ą́Jí Sin: Sounding A Self-Determined Navajo Christian Church, Renata Yazzie

Music ETDs

Jesus Woodlą́ą́jí’ Sin: Navajo Hymns of Faith, the first and only extensive Navajo hymnal, was published in 1979. This hymnal contains 365 hymns for congregational singing, translated into the Navajo language. The Navajo Hymnal Committee, responsible for the seven years of intensive translation work, formed in 1972 under the direction of Reverend Dr. Paul Redhouse (1925-2019), an ordained Navajo minister within the Christian Reformed Church. Redhouse wholeheartedly believed that Navajo people had the right to worship in their own language and argued that pre-issued English hymnals by outside church leaders were not suitable for obvious reasons—a language barrier. Through …

Measurement Error Modeling Applied To Phylogenetic Inference And Parametric Bootstrap Approach To Multifactor Anova Models With Unequal Variances And Unbalanced Data, Sarah Katharine Alver Apr 2022

Measurement Error Modeling Applied To Phylogenetic Inference And Parametric Bootstrap Approach To Multifactor Anova Models With Unequal Variances And Unbalanced Data, Sarah Katharine Alver

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This dissertation includes two main topics. The first uses measurement error modeling to improve upon an existing method of inferring species trees from gene trees that were estimated with error. The second involves extending the parametric bootstrap (PB) approach, which was previously shown to work well for one- and two-way analysis of variance models with unequal variance and unbalanced data (heteANOVA), to multi-factor heteANOVA models. An overall framework using PB is presented. For each topic, the underlying theory is shown, and simulations and applications to empirical data are presented, demonstrating improvement over earlier methods. The proposed species tree inference method …

Experimental Investigations On Boiling Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Accident-Tolerant-Fuel And Traditional Claddings, Mingfu He Mr. Apr 2022

Experimental Investigations On Boiling Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Accident-Tolerant-Fuel And Traditional Claddings, Mingfu He Mr.

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

To make it more clear that how the materials’ thermal-physical properties and wall thickness have influential impacts on boiling heat transfer characteristics of cladding, this dissertation looks into the potential impacts of cladding materials on critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficients by a systematic experimental investigation across a wide range of pool/flow boiling conditions under the steady-state and power-transient heat inputs.

Recent thermal-hydraulics studies have demonstrated that iron-chromium-aluminium (FeCrAl) alloys have the thermal priorities over zircaloys and other commercial alloys including critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient. However, it is found in our experimental results that FeCrAl-C26M, and …

The Motivations & Goals In The German Peasants' War, Donovan Mefford Apr 2022

The Motivations & Goals In The German Peasants' War, Donovan Mefford

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

The German Peasants’ War, which lasted from 1524 to 1526, has been evaluated in many different ways by scholars. The war began as a result of the demands for reforms raised by peasants in Germany went unanswered. This uprising ultimately failed, but many scholars see it as an important precedent. Some Marxist and socialist historians see it as an early bourgeois revolution, while others have seen it as an early attempt to move towards a parliamentary democracy instead of monarchy. This research looks at the goals and motivations of the peasants in the German Peasants’ War as evidenced through documents …

The Promise Of The Taxonomy Of Online Racism For Critical Race Media Literacy In Social Studies Education Research, Jemimah Young, Cristina Worley, Jamaal Young

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

The purpose of this article is to present an argument for the uptake of the online taxonomy of racism as an analytical framework for online analyses of racism to support the adoption of critical race media literacy (CRML) within social studies education. First, we provide an overview of the utility of the taxonomy of online racism. We then offer a discussion of how hashtag analysis is currently used to study racism in other fields and can be adapted for use among teacher educators, pre-service, and in-service social studies teachers. Then we present #hashtag content analysis as an exemplar for implementing …

Teaching And Integrating Women’S Studies Into The Classroom: Perspectives Of Elementary Teachers, Thomas Lucey Apr 2022

Teaching And Integrating Women’S Studies Into The Classroom: Perspectives Of Elementary Teachers, Thomas Lucey

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Women’s studies represent an underappreciated aspect of elementary education. Whether or how classrooms and their resources portray, present, and value women role-models informs both boys and girls about what passes for acceptable communication, treatment, and conduct towards women. Indeed, the extent to which and the basis that a young citizenry is taught to appreciate others informs the nature of the conversations engaged.

This paper describes the results of a research study that interpreted elementary teachers’ perspectives of women’s studies in elementary settings. The online survey was administered as part of the registration for two workshops that prepared teachers in the …
