Early Tourism And Harriet Beecher Stowe: The Discovery Of Stowe's First Published Descriptions Of Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

While many living today may not realize it, Harriet Beecher Stowe was the most famous American woman of the mid-nineteenth century. In fact, she was so famous that when she visited President Lincoln at the White House, he is believed to have greeted her with these words: "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." This statement, of course, refers to the far-reaching impact of Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. For all its faults, this work exposed a horrible truth about slavery: that a slave owner possessed the right to maim or kill a …

One evening in July of 2010, an Internet user who goes by "GinnyFavers" posted a question to the city-data.com forum: "I heard from someone that the Buena Ventura Lakes (BVL) subdivision was a majority to all Hispanic area. Just curious if that's really true? No negative implication intended! -Amanda."1 Twenty-two minutes later "Metrowester" responded. "Yes, BVL is a primarily Hispanic area. Landstar homes was heavily marketed in Puerto Rico several years ago."2 "Metrowester" continued, and spoke favorably about the Publix Sabor supermarket in the area with a deli that serves Cuban coffee, pastries, and roasted pork. He identified himself as …

"A New Social Awakening": James Hudson, Florida A. & M. University's Religious Life Program, And The 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott, Larry O. Rivers

Florida Historical Quarterly

On May 28, 1956, an event occurred on the Tallahassee campus of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) that fused an educator and religious leader, his teachings on nonviolence, a detestable act of racial discrimination, and the passion of well-prepared university students into a crusade for social change.

The Right To Vote And The Long Nineteenth Century In Florida, Robert Cassanello Jun 2022

The Right To Vote And The Long Nineteenth Century In Florida, Robert Cassanello

Florida Historical Quarterly

These special issues are meant to reflect on the quincentennial history of Ponce de Leon's landing on the shores of the Florida peninsula and as historians we are challenged to understand and come to terms with the consequence of those actions. The editors of the Florida Historical Quarterly have asked the contributors to explore Florida's past through the lens of a century long view. The nineteenth century presents such a unique challenge for these types of historical reflections because so much by way of technology, communication, transportation, societal relations transformed more rapidly than any previously recorded century. The world was …

Investigating The Overrepresentation Of Ethnic Minorities In Special Education, Damien Murtagh

LC Journal of Special Education

Debates on the overrepresentation of minority students, particularly African- Americans, are not new in special education and have characterized research in this field for over three decades. Regardless of time, legislative debate and a host of research theories, this problem remains. “In general, research has supported the public concern but the picture is unclear because studies have varied so much with respect to definitions of minority representation in findings across ethnic groups and technical methods (Coutinho & Oswald, 1999, p. 66). It is on the definition of minorities, the methods used to calculate date and the identification of minority students …

Effective Reading Practices For Inclusive Classrooms, Andrew Block Jun 2022

Effective Reading Practices For Inclusive Classrooms, Andrew Block

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper examined research on what are best practices for teaching reading comprehension to students in an inclusive classroom. This topic is explored through research findings from multiple quantitative and qualitative studies which examined the effectiveness of structured reading instruction, explicitly taught reading strategies, student autonomy, and discussion and collaboration as best practices for improving reading comprehension skills. While research showed a variety of effective practices and strategies to increase reading comprehension among all students, the research also suggested the need for content area teachers to receive on-going professional development to consistently implement evidence-based practices throughout the course of the …

Pentasyllabic Shi Poetry : Landscape Poetry : Landscapes Of The Mind, Lucas Rambo Bender Jun 2022

Pentasyllabic Shi Poetry : Landscape Poetry : Landscapes Of The Mind, Lucas Rambo Bender

How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast

This episode discusses the prehistory of Chinese landscape poetry. In the centuries before poets began to write consistently of their concrete, personal experiences out in nature, landscape appeared in poetry primarily as a foil for the city and the court, where most poets were writing. In this role, the natural landscape could be terrifyingly inhospitable or wondrous and pure. Either way, it was for the most part imagined rather than experienced, a site more often for mental roaming than for extended in-person exploration.

Language And Social Justice In Us Climate Movements: Barriers And Ways Forward, Julia Coombs Fine Jun 2022

Language And Social Justice In Us Climate Movements: Barriers And Ways Forward, Julia Coombs Fine

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Climate movements increasingly conceptualize the climate crisis as an issue of social injustice, both in terms of its root causes and its present and future effects. Climate justice calls for participatory decision-making within climate movements, which, as communication scholars have pointed out, necessitates inclusive and accessible communicative practices. Within sociocultural linguistics, a growing body of research has explored sociolinguistic justice, or marginalized groups' struggle for self-determined language use. This analysis interweaves these two research areas, applying the theory of sociolinguistic justice to climate communication in organizing contexts. Drawing on 67 semi-structured interviews and 112 online surveys with climate activists from …

Concise Abstract of the Results of the Work. Our research attempted to understand mechanisms underlying alcohol use and factors that may contribute to alcohol use disorder (AUD). More specifically, the present series of experiments, phases 1 through 4, expand on rodent models research to study binge-like ethanol consumption using the “Drinking In the Dark” (DID) procedure (see Thiele &Navarro, 2014 for a review). In DID, ethanol (EtOH) is provided in the home cage for 3 hours, beginning 3 hours after the start of the dark phase of the light:dark cycle when nocturnal rodents are most active (adapted from Rhodes et …

Cmv-Responsive Cd4 T Cells Have A Stable Cytotoxic Phenotype Over The First Year Post-Transplant In Patients Without Evidence Of Cmv Viremia, Lauren E. Higdon, Ayah A. Amad, Steven Schaffert, Kenneth B. Margulies, Jonathan S. Maltzman

Publications and Research

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a known cause of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant recipients. While primary infection is controlled by a healthy immune system, CMV is never eradicated due to viral latency and periodic reactivation. Transplantation and associated therapies hinder immune surveillance of CMV. CD4 T cells are an important part of control of CMV reactivation. We therefore investigated how CMV impacts differentiation, functionality, and expansion of protective CD4 T cells from recipients of heart or kidney transplant in the fi rst year post-transplant without evidence of CMV viremia. We analyzed longitudinal peripheral blood samples by flow cytometry …

Recognition Of The Tdp-43 Nuclear Localization Signal By Importin Α1/Β, Steven G Doll, Hamed Meshkin, Alexander J Bryer, Fenglin Li, Ying-Hui Ko, Ravi K Lokareddy, Richard E Gillilan, Kushol Gupta, Juan R Perilla, Gino Cingolani

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Cytoplasmic mislocalization of the TAR-DNA binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) leads to large, insoluble aggregates that are a hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. Here, we study how importin α1/β recognizes TDP-43 bipartite nuclear localization signal (NLS). We find that the NLS makes extensive contacts with importin α1, especially at the minor NLS-binding site. NLS binding results in steric clashes with the C terminus of importin α1 that disrupts the TDP-43 N-terminal domain (NTD) dimerization interface. A putative phosphorylation site in the proximity of TDP-43 R83 at the minor NLS site destabilizes binding to importins by reducing …

These novels represent Filipino women working in foreign countries, their roles in the family and in Filipino history, documenting the construction of identity and the creation of personal history outside of the motherland. This article explores how female English-speaking Filipino writers represent Filipino identities and displacement to international readers.

Classification Of Teleseismic Shear Wave Splitting Measurements: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach, Yanwei Zhang, Stephen S. Gao Jun 2022

Classification Of Teleseismic Shear Wave Splitting Measurements: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach, Yanwei Zhang, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis is widely used to provide critical constraints on crustal and mantle structure and dynamic models. In order to obtain reliable splitting measurements, an essential step is to visually verify all the measurements to reject problematic measurements, a task that is increasingly time consuming due to the exponential increase in the amount of data. In this study, we utilized a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method to automatically select reliable SWS measurements. The CNN was trained by human-verified teleseismic SWS measurements and tested using synthetic SWS measurements. Application of the trained CNN to broadband seismic data …
