Uk And The 'Razor-Wire Humanitarianism': The Refugee Crisis And The Aesthetic Of Violence, Yasmin Ibrahim Jan 2026

Uk And The 'Razor-Wire Humanitarianism': The Refugee Crisis And The Aesthetic Of Violence, Yasmin Ibrahim

Fast Capitalism

When the 'refugee crisis' in Calais became an issue of renewed concern in the summer of discontent in 2015, UK's reticent stance towards the crisis was captured through its measured approach. A notable riposte from the then Home Secretary, Theresa May, was to send in yet more security fencing to fortify the borders in Calais to assuage the disaffect from the truckers and the public. Dubbing this as UK's 'razor wire humanitarianism', the paper examines how the material artefact of the razor wire is implicated in the aesthetic of violence towards the refugee and migrant bodies in the camps of …

The Politics Of Curiosity, Eva-Maria Swidler Jan 2026

The Politics Of Curiosity, Eva-Maria Swidler

Fast Capitalism

Curiosity, a simultaneously intellectual and emotional phenomenon, is surprisingly unstudied, yet pivotal for social critics and activists to understand. While recognizing curiosity as frequently positive and necessary for creating new solidarities and political movements, it also considers the social and political roots and consequences of incuriosity, apathy, and ignorance, including such topics as willful apathy as cultural resistance and self-defense, ignorance as an ethical choice, incuriosity as arrogance, and the generalized anxiety of neoliberal society and the shrinking of curiosity.

Panic Learning Off (And On) The Covid Campus, Tara Brabazon, Jamie Quinton, Narelle Hunter

Fast Capitalism

Online learning has been flooded with platitudes, promises and possibilities for twenty years. Oversold and undertheorized, online learning reached its "moment' through the Covid lockdown. Underprepared staff and underfunded universities implemented online learning in a crisis. This was a zombie apocalypse of a context in which to summon innovation. This article activates Paul Virilio's University of Disaster to explore the COVID campus and classroom, entering panic learning.

The Pandemic Preferred User, Katie Ellis, Kai-Ti Kao, Tim Pitman Jan 2026

The Pandemic Preferred User, Katie Ellis, Kai-Ti Kao, Tim Pitman

Fast Capitalism

As COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, universities acted quickly to move their core business of teaching and research online. Classes shifted to platforms such as Zoom, Webex, Collaborate and Microsoft Teams and teachers and students alike were expected to adapt. And they did. While there has been much discussion of the unpaid labour involved in making this shift and the difficulties inherent in merging work, study and domestic life, there has been little acknowledgement or analysis of inherent notions of the preferred user in this rapid shift to technology.

This paper draws on critical disability studies to offer a conceptual …

Who Wouldn't Get The Joke?: Vile Sovereignty, Vanishing Mediators, And Trump, Simon Orpana, Evan Mauro Jan 2026

Who Wouldn't Get The Joke?: Vile Sovereignty, Vanishing Mediators, And Trump, Simon Orpana, Evan Mauro

Fast Capitalism

This article considers Trump as an example of "vile sovereignty," a concept Michel Foucault put forward in the mid 1970s to describe "the exercise of power through the explicit disqualification of the person who wields it" (2003b: 35)—a "childish discourse" that disqualifies the speaker at the very moment that they are being appealed to as a figure of authority (36). We argue that this concept helps illuminate contemporary US politics, where Trump's carnivalesque flaunting of political decorum and morality paradoxically seem to buttress the power of his Republican Party. Building upon our theorization of the role vile sovereignty has played …

The Carnival King Of Capital, Charles Thorpe Jan 2026

The Carnival King Of Capital, Charles Thorpe

Fast Capitalism

This paper argues that President Donald Trump may be understood as ruling through carnival. The theatrical reversal of conventional standards and rules, his carnivalesque incivility, is key to his political persona. It performs his claim to be an outsider, attacking and subverting the Washington DC establishment. But Trump's carnivalesque performance, far from undermining the dominant order, reflects it. What Trump represents is carnivalized capital, a financialized and globalized form of capital that has broken free of the social and legal restraints of the nation state. The carnivalesque chaos of Trump's presidency reflects the chaos of financialized capitalism.

Farm-Level Financial Decision-Making Methodologies Within A Cow-Calf Enterprise: A Scoping Review, Heidi R. Johnson, Huiting Huang, Brenna Grant

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Beef cow-calf enterprises face unique financial challenges, requiring methodologies to assess management and technology adoption decisions’ costs, revenues, and profitability. This scoping review synthesizes research on farm-level financial assessment methods specific to cow-calf operations aiming to adopt a new practice or technology. A literature search was conducted to capture various methodologies, examining studies published between 1960 and 2024. A total of 372 articles were screened for eligibility; 61 articles met the defined inclusion criteria. Eight economic and financial methodologies were identified: break-even analysis, cost effectiveness, gross margin, enterprise analysis, partial budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, financial feasibility and net present value, and …

Trans/Queer/Cuir Literature And Resources, Julien Torrento

FIRE Fund Bibliographies

This bibliography assembles interdisciplinary scholarship, literature, and cultural production centered on trans, queer/cuir, and gender-nonconforming Latinx and Caribbean experiences. The selected works foreground embodiment, migration, performance, kinship, and resistance as sites through which marginalized subjects negotiate violence, survival, and worldmaking. Across academic, creative, and archival forms, these sources challenge normative frameworks of gender, nation, and citizenship while imagining alternative futures rooted in community and futurity.

Latisha King: Queer Confusion, Aggression, And Correction, Hannah Bollin Jan 2026

Latisha King: Queer Confusion, Aggression, And Correction, Hannah Bollin

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

Latisha King was a 15-year-old biracial and transgender student at E.O. Green Junior High who was shot and killed by one of her peers on February 12, 2008. Latisha’s untimely death was followed by a court case during which she was blamed for her own murder due to her gender identity and sexual orientation. Through a thematic analysis of scholarly work alongside public media sources surrounding the case, this study argues that the transphobia that Latisha faced in her classroom was continued in the courtroom and media. More specifically, this article argues that the classroom, murder trial, and public media …

Writing Professional Papers Worksheet With Scavenger Hunt: A Simple Strategy To Strengthen Dietetic Writing, Stacy Bevan Jan 2026

Writing Professional Papers Worksheet With Scavenger Hunt: A Simple Strategy To Strengthen Dietetic Writing, Stacy Bevan

Journal of Dietetic Education

Time between learning scientific writing skills and when dietetic students need to transfer that knowledge to discipline-specific research papers in upper division courses may result in a lack of writing skills. Dietetic educators be unfamiliar with writing strategies to improve student writing. A Writing Professional Papers worksheet was developed to help students define components of professional papers, draft a thesis, and then participate in a scavenger hunt using examples of two types of professional papers to identify target issues and avoid common issues seen in student papers. Students in an upper division Maternal and Child Nutrition course responded to an …

Student Exposure To Andhii Part Ii: Cross-Cohort Improvements In Confidence Without Parallel Gains In Documentation Quality When Applying The Nutrition Care Process, Casey Colin, Lindsay Woodcock

Journal of Dietetic Education

The purpose of this study was to compare differences in Nutrition Care Process (NCP) confidence and documentation quality across two different undergraduate student cohorts. This quasi-experimental trial was conducted with n = 29 total undergraduate dietetic students (2023 cohort), then compared with results from the previous years’ (2022) cohort (n = 43). NCP confidence was measured before and after students completed traditional case studies (time 1 and time 2) and after completing an ANDHII case study using an electronic and interactive NCP documentation platform (time 3) for each cohort, then compared between cohorts. Documentation quality was measured using a validated …

Improving Lexicosemantic Impairments In Post-Stroke Aphasia Using Rtms Targeting The Right Anterior Temporal Lobe, Sophie Arheix-Parras, Sophia R. Moore, Rutvik H. Desai Jan 2026

Improving Lexicosemantic Impairments In Post-Stroke Aphasia Using Rtms Targeting The Right Anterior Temporal Lobe, Sophie Arheix-Parras, Sophia R. Moore, Rutvik H. Desai

Faculty Publications

Background/Objectives: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) can enhance post-stroke aphasia recovery. The right Inferior Frontal Gyrus is the most common target in rTMS studies for inhibitory stimulation. However, lexicosemantic processes involve a large brain network including the Anterior Temporal Lobe (ATL). We hypothesize that rTMS targeting the ATL will improve lexicosemantic impairments in people with post-stroke aphasia. Methods: In a Single-Case Experimental Design, three people with post-stroke aphasia with lexicosemantic impairments performed Picture and Auditory Naming and Semantic Decision tasks five times a week for one or two weeks to establish baseline scores. Then, each participant received continuous inhibitory Theta …

Meet Me At The Rock: The Behavioral Patterns Of Collective Violence In Prison, Hayden P. Smith Jan 2026

Meet Me At The Rock: The Behavioral Patterns Of Collective Violence In Prison, Hayden P. Smith

Faculty Publications

This study explores the behavioral dynamics of collective violence in prisons, focusing on the largest prison riot in the United States in twenty-five years at Lee Correctional Institution, using an ethnographic approach and Crime Script Analysis (CSA). The sample consisted of twenty-five incarcerated men, predominantly African American, aged 25 to 61, with extensive incarceration histories, experiences of violence, and influencer status within the prison community. It identifies key factors such as situational awareness, gang affiliations, and chronic understaffing that escalate violence. Themes include the "pressure cooker" environment, elevated tensions, and stages of confrontation, escalation, and de-escalation. A key finding is …

Police Staffing Shortages, Public Awareness, And Policy Preferences, Hunter M. Boehme, Joshua Mccrain, Scott M. Mourtgos, Brandon Tregle Jan 2026

Police Staffing Shortages, Public Awareness, And Policy Preferences, Hunter M. Boehme, Joshua Mccrain, Scott M. Mourtgos, Brandon Tregle

Faculty Publications

Since the summer of 2020, police agencies across the United States have continued to experience police staffing shortages. The consequences of understaffed police agencies are well studied, but little is known about whether the public is aware of the staffing problem and its consequences for public safety and police behavior. This study presents a pre-registered factorial survey experiment to 3105 US adults, varying the information respondents see on the consequences of staffing shortages (e.g., public safety, police behavior) and the messenger of this information (e.g., police chief, mayor). Respondents are then asked about their levels of concern about police staffing, …

Identification Of A Previously Unrecognized Listric Fault Beneath The Acıpayam Graben: Insights From Integrated Dinsar And Field Observations, Semi̇h Eski̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The 20 March 2019 Acıpayam earthquake (Mw 5.7) offers a valuable opportunity to examine the complex seismotectonic behavior of the Fethiye-Burdur Fault Zone (FBFZ), a transtensional structure in southwestern Türkiye. This study integrates field observations and focal mechanism data with differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) analysis to reassess the geometry of the causative fault. In contrast to previously proposed northeast-dipping blind fault models, the data obtained in this study indicate a southwest-dipping listric normal-fault system centered on the Yeniköy Fault, projecting beneath alluvial cover. Vertical displacement maps from Sentinel-1 show coseismic subsidence up to 5.8 cm and broader postseismic …
