Sources Of Top-Down Processing In Recognition Of Repeated Speech In Noise, Liam Gleason
Sources Of Top-Down Processing In Recognition Of Repeated Speech In Noise, Liam Gleason
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Prior research has shown that repetition facilitates speech recognition in difficult listening environments, as indicated by more accurate reporting and lower subjective noise ratings. Both effects were found even when sentences were read at encoding, suggesting that the top-down processing involved comes from a modality-general level of representation (Gleason & Francis, 2021). We investigated whether this top-down processing comes from the semantic or lemma level of language representation. Bilingual participants listened to sentences in English and Spanish. At test, these sentences and new sentences were presented auditorily in English with background noise. After listening to each sentence, participants reported the …

Faculty Experiences Teaching In An Mba Program In The Context Of Covid-19 A Sensemaking Approach, Jesus Rolando Nuñez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Sensemaking framework is often utilized when disruptive events create ambiguity and force individuals to make sense of things differently, personally and professionally, by "structuring the unknown" (Waterman, 1990, p.41). By way of example, the COVID-19 pandemic was a significant disruptor to the education sector. Institutional decisions driven by the initial crisis kept daily functions and the educational process moving forward in 2020 by faculty members leveraging existing technology to continue teaching their students. The pandemic disrupted the daily routine of brick-and-mortar operations and many institutions' face-to-face delivery of academic content. The implications of the pandemic forced every faculty member …
Rhetorical Conversations: Race, Class, And Gender In The Works Of Jacqueline Jones Royster And Shirley Wilson Logan, Tanya Robertson
Rhetorical Conversations: Race, Class, And Gender In The Works Of Jacqueline Jones Royster And Shirley Wilson Logan, Tanya Robertson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This project is an examination of Jacqueline Jones Royster and Shirley Wilson Logan as knowledge-makers in the field of rhetoric and composition. There is a large gap in research on the contemporary African American women scholars who act as knowledge makers of rhetorical theory and rhetorical pedagogy. There is circularity in the notion that as Royster and Logan examine the history of the fieldâ??African American rhetorical practices, feministic rhetorical practices, English language studies and literacy, and classroom practicesâ??they are, themselves, having an impact on the field.

Vatra: A Poetic Memoir, Ashley Nichole Stevens
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
When I initially began researching for and composing this collection, the idea I had in mind was a simple one: tell my great grandfather's story, on many Lemko-American immigrants lived in the early 1900s. However, it took several months for me to realize this was not the complete story. It required refinement. While I had always felt a significant connection to this particular side of my family, I could never articulate why. The genealogical and historical research I conducted spoke for me. My great grandfather survived numerous traumas associated with being an ethnic minority in his homeland as well as …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This paper focuses on immigration operations and policies from 1990-2008 with a focus on how these operations and policies affected the city of El Paso, Texas. The work begins with a brief introduction of immigration policies from the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 which gave amnesty to undocumented immigrants. The research follows Bowie High School's lawsuit against the United States Border Patrol, Operation Hold the Line, and how racial scripts were used from 1990-2000. To conclude, the thesis focuses on post-9/11 legislation, criminalization and citizenship profiling, and a hearing that was …
Who Said What To Whom?: Contextual Memory Processes In Bilinguals, Naoko Tsuboi
Who Said What To Whom?: Contextual Memory Processes In Bilinguals, Naoko Tsuboi
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Source memory is memory for sources of information (who gave the information), whereas destination memory is memory for destinations of information (to whom the information was given). Prior literature found that source memory exceeded destination memory, and destination memory was impaired remarkably under high cognitive demand tasks. These findings supported the attention hypothesis, the idea that greater attentional resource availability leads to better source and destination memory. The current study extended prior source and destination research to bilingualism because bilinguals are thought to have a greater attention control ability than monolinguals. In the only published study to compare bilingual and …

Teachers' Perspectives On Decolonizing U.S. Curriculum For Latinx Through Ethnic Studies Programs At The Middle And High School Levels, Richard Varela
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the implementation of an ethnic studies program with an emphasis on Mexican American Studies at the middle and high school level, in a district located along the Mexican/U.S. frontera. Ethnic Studies are a critical, interdisciplinary academic field of study that acknowledges that race, and racism are embedded in every U.S. system, especially our educational institution. As a critical pedagogy, ethnic studies validate and encourages the voices and viewpoints of the marginalized, while analyzing and criticizing dominant influences that promote â??normalizingâ?? of racialized inequality (de los Rios, 2013). At the center of ethnic …

Development Of A Palliative Care Module For Integration Within An Existing Heart Failure Clinic, Elizabeth Keenan Mcquagge
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Heart failure affects 6.2 million of the American population. This number is expected to grow to a staggering 3% of the entire U.S. population over the next 10 years. Heart failure is characterized by a variety of physical and emotional symptoms including shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, fatigue, depression, and anorexia. These symptoms greatly challenge the patient’s quality of life and day-to-day activities. Unfortunately, 50% of patients with heart failure die within five years of being diagnosed. Palliative care is a service dedicated to improving the lives of patients with chronic, life-threatening illnesses. Although providing palliative care to patients …

Urban form should reflect collective value for place in communities. Urban squares in particular have the potential to serve as the nucleus of communities, urban artefacts that link place to memory and heritage while serving basic needs for everyday life in the city. Civic squares, those linked to governmental institutions, have further potential to facilitate community gatherings for memorialisation, commemoration, celebration and political action. Despite these important functions and potential, the incremental planning of Brooklyn in the early nineteenth century placed little emphasis on squares of any kind, despite the community’s expressed desires. Brooklyn’s first civic square, here referred to …

The Fair Housing Act (FHA), enacted as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, prohibits discrimination from selling or renting a dwelling to any person because of race, color, disability, religion, sex, family status, and national origin. The federal government provides rental subsidies for many low-income renters through government programs. Rental assistance such as Section 8 vouchers administered by Housing and Urban Development is considered a lawful source of income for paying rent; however, many landlords or realtors discriminate against individuals utilizing Section 8 vouchers. According to the New York City Human Rights Law, this is illegal. The …

Climate Change has played a massive role in the habitat of us earth dwellers and the animals that co-exists with us. I believe that essentially climate change plays a massive role because this can dictate whether or not the earth is habitable and if a need for evacuation is necessary. Many might believe that climate change only refers to the rising temperature but that’s just the icing on the cake. Earth is a system that is very much connected, this means that changes in one area will set off a chain reaction allowing these changes to happen in many other …

In today's day of age, the biggest concern for current and future generations: the environment. The urban heat island (UHi) with its significant energy, health, and societal impacts is among the major environmental issues in urban regions, especially in historically underserved and socially vulnerable communities (HUSVCs). In the 1930s, the former federal agency, Homeowners' Loan Corporation (H0Lq, created ''Residential Security" maps of major cities, known today as "redlined" areas. These neighborhoods were often designated as "hazardous" due to the high percentages of people of color living there, leading to systematic disinvestment based on race. While the program ended in 1968, …

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several bile acids-based monotherapies have been developed for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) treatment but clinical trial findings suggest that they do not satisfactorily improve NASH and liver fibrosis in many patients. Recently, we have shown that combining a gut-restricted apical sodium-bile acid transporter (ASBT) inhibitor GSK2330672 (GSK) with adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated liver fibroblast growth factor 15 (FGF15) overexpression provides significantly improved efficacy than either single treatment against NASH and liver fibrosis in a high fat, cholesterol, and fructose (HFCFr) diet-induced NASH mouse model. The beneficial effects of the combined treatment can be attributed to the markedly reduced bile …

Why are there so many languages in the world and how did this diversity come about? Every day, humans around the world speak over 7,000 languages. One of the most impactful theories describing the processes and mechanisms of language diversification is that of the Linguistic Niche Hypothesis (Lupyan & Dale 2010). The Linguistic Niche Hypothesis suggests that languages adapt to their environments (Lupyan & Dale 2010: 1). Lupyan and Dale describe it, stating that "just as biological organisms are shaped by ecological niches, languages structures...adapt to the environment (niche) in which they are being learned and used" (2010: 1). These properties make these materials a strong candidate for several high temperature, hypersonic and structural applications. A wide variety of compounds including Cr2AlC and MoAlB, belonging to the same class of materials, have also been reported over the last few decades. These materials have been used as bulk materials, reinforcements and matrices for different composites and coatings on different substrates, apart from different …
