George Floyd In Papua: Image-Events And The Art Of Resonance, Karen Strassler
George Floyd In Papua: Image-Events And The Art Of Resonance, Karen Strassler
Publications and Research
This article offers an introduction to the “image-event” as both concept and method through a focus on the circulation of images around the killing of George Floyd. It examines how these images reverberated and resonated in West Papua, a restive region of Indonesia that has been the site of a long-standing separatist movement. It critically examines a celebratory media discourse that sees the US-based Black Lives Matter movement as expanding outward to spark similar movements elsewhere, a logic that reiterates long-standing colonialist narratives that figure places like Papua as backwaters belatedly receiving and imitatively taking up ideas that flow from …

An Appreciative Inquiry Of Community Based Disability Sports And Physical Activity Provision To Guide Future Development, Jennifer O Carroll Reidy
Theses
In 2008, the Irish Sports Inclusion Disability Programme (SIDP) was established to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in a variety of sports and physical activity. Regular monitoring has been sporadic and disparate (Sport Ireland, 2016). Using the four-stage method of Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider, 1987), a series of interviews was undertaken with providers of the SIDP. Fourteen Coordinators, SIDOs and sports development workers were interviewed about the strengths, impacts and future for the SIDP. Six participants of the programmes also took part in a focus group concerning their perspectives of the current state and future potential for the …

Peptide-hormones, including pancreatic peptide-YY(PYY), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), cholecystokinin (CCK), insulin, and leptin function as satiety signals, while ghrelin promotes hunger. These hormones are also involved in glucose homeostasis and body-weight regulation. The aim of this cross-sectional analysis was to examine the association of these peptide-hormones with obesity-markers, insulin-resistance, and dyslipidemia (total-cholesterol (TC), low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG)). Sixteen-obese (OB) adults and 21 normal-weight (NW) age-and gender-matched counterparts were recruited. OB-participants showed significantly higher levels of leptin, insulin, Homeostatic-Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), and TG. NW participants had significantly higher levels of ghrelin. GLP-1 was positively correlated with insulin, …

The Influence Of Language On Thematic Apperception Test Assessment Of Defenses In International Spanish-Speaking College Students, Ilenia Perez-Palen
Theses and Dissertations
Cultural influences, including the use of language, have been shown to affect personality development and are also likely to impact personality assessment results. The influence of language is particularly relevant in story-telling measures such as the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Morgan & Murray, 1935). The purpose of this study was to analyze TAT narratives delivered in English and Spanish to assess the application of defense mechanisms based on the Defense Mechanism Manual (DMM; Cramer, 1991) among Hispanic international students. No study to date has provided insight into Hispanic individuals’ use of language with the TAT, specifically on scores for the …

Introduction: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) are heterogeneous malignancies that can arise at almost any anatomical site and are classified as biologically distinct well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC). Current systemic therapies for advanced disease, including targeted therapies, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, are associated with limited duration of response. New therapeutic targets are needed. One promising target is delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3), an inhibitory ligand of the Notch receptor whose overexpression on the surface of NEN is associated with tumorigenesis. Methods: This article is a narrative review that highlights the role of DLL3 in NEN progression and prognosis, the …

Risk For Preeclampsia Associated With Nutritional Deficiencies And Modified By Apol1 Genotype, Winter S. Bruner
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Preeclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that is associated with micronutrient deficiencies. Nutrients involved in placental health and maintenance, such as vitamin D and folate, are important nutrients to assess in the risk of PE. As gestational age increases, the levels of vitamin D and folate potentially have incrementally increasing concentrations associated with PE. In addition to micronutrient deficiencies, PE is also associated with the presence of APOL1 high-risk (HR) variants. It was also hypothesized that a potential additive effect exists between HR APOL1 genotype status and nutritional deficiencies that would place individuals at a higher risk of …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Children And Adolescents’ Mental Health, Tamara A. Hafiz, Ahmed H. Aljadani
Saudi Medical Journal
Children and adolescents are more susceptible to the formation of mental health issues, since their brains are still developing. The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic response measures have disrupted daily life and left individuals socially isolated, including children and adolescents. In view of this, this study aimed to give a narrative review of the literature on the pandemic’s effects on children’s and adolescents’ mental health, associated risks, and successful intervention strategies. There are still issues to be resolved to give children and adolescents in many regions of the world with quality, rights-based, and culturally relevant mental health care. It is …
Another Bite At The Apple Or The Same Bite? Characterizing Habeas Petitions On Appeal As Pending Instead Of Fully Adjudicated, Gregory Winder
Another Bite At The Apple Or The Same Bite? Characterizing Habeas Petitions On Appeal As Pending Instead Of Fully Adjudicated, Gregory Winder
William & Mary Law Review
[...] One of the Act's [Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act] most significant aspects is its restriction on the filing of successive habeas corpus petitions. Responding to this restriction, prisoners have attempted to circumvent the AEDPA through a number of different procedural routes with varying degrees of success.
This Note examines the circuit split that has emerged for one of those procedural attempts—motions to amend habeas petitions following adjudication on the merits and while on appeal in a circuit court. This Note argues that allowing amendment of habeas petitions on appeal is both consistent with the history of habeas corpus …

This study tests for house money effect on 2,030 non-professional FX investors trading through an Australian Financial Service provider. The results indicate that, in general, investors display a positive relationship between prior gains and the change in subsequent weekly risk-taking - the house money effect. The results also suggest that astute investors display a stronger house money effect than mediocre investors following prior gains. In comparison, mediocre investors display a stronger disposition effect following prior losses than astute investors. The study further reveals that investors who initially demonstrated the house money effect became more prone to the disposition effect during …

Recommendation explanations help to make sense of recommendations, increasing the likelihood of adoption. Here, we are interested in mining product textual data, an unstructured data type, coming from manufacturers, sellers, or consumers, appearing in many places including title, summary, description, review, question and answers, etc., can be a rich source of information to explain the recommendation. As the explanation task could be decoupled from that of recommendation objective, we can categorize recommendation explanation into integrated approach, that uses a single interpretable model to produce both recommendation and explanation, or pipeline approach, that uses a post-hoc explanation model to produce explanation …

Reinforcement Learning Approach To Coordinate Real-World Multi-Agent Dynamic Routing And Scheduling, Joe Waldy
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In this thesis, we study new variants of routing and scheduling problems motivated by real-world problems from the urban logistics and law enforcement domains. In particular, we focus on two key aspects: dynamic and multi-agent. While routing problems such as the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is well-studied in the Operations Research (OR) community, we know that in real-world route planning today, initially-planned route plans and schedules may be disrupted by dynamically-occurring events. In addition, routing and scheduling plans cannot be done in silos due to the presence of other agents which may be independent and self-interested. These requirements create …
