Individual Costs And Community Benefits: Collectivism And Individuals’ Compliance With Public Health Interventions, Suyi Leong, Kimin Eom, Keiko Ishii, Marion C. Aichberger, Karolina Fetz, Tim S. Müller, Heejung S. Kim, David K. Sherman

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Differences in national responses to COVID-19 have been associated with the cultural value of collectivism. The present research builds on these findings by examining the relationship between collectivism at the individual level and adherence to public health recommendations to combat COVID-19 during the pre-vaccination stage of the pandemic, and examines different characteristics of collectivism (i.e., concern for community, trust in institutions, perceived social norms) as potential psychological mechanisms that could explain greater compliance. A study with a cross-section of American participants (N = 530) examined the relationship between collectivism and opting-in to digital contact tracing (DCT) and wearing face coverings …

Emergency Management For Equitable Coastal Resilience, Wie Yusuf Nov 2022

Emergency Management For Equitable Coastal Resilience, Wie Yusuf

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

Summary: The discipline and practice of emergency management provide opportunities to promote equity in resilience. This may be accomplished by (1) expanding and deepening emergency management’s responsibilities to more explicitly incorporate mid-to-long-term recovery, and (2) advancing workforce diversity. Further, the prioritization of planning investments may promote more equitable recovery pathways for communities. Tracking of resilience investments and associated benefits across communities may provide opportunities to assess the equity of investments. Advancing resilience literacy and risk assessment among the citizenry may promote equity in resilience.

Law School Rankings And The Impossibility Of Anti-Racism, Rory D. Bahadur Nov 2022

Law School Rankings And The Impossibility Of Anti-Racism, Rory D. Bahadur

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Article uses the U.S. News law school rankings to illustrate how powerful, invisible, and stubborn systemic racism is. This Article does not level allegations of intentionally blameworthy conduct at U.S. News, or any person or entity. More broadly, this Article does not address conscious and deliberate racism, or the examples of this type of racism with which America’s history is replete. Nor is this Article attempting to undervalue the significant impact of deliberately racist actions in American history on the economic disparity between white people and people of color.

Instead, I make an untrue assumption: All Americans of every …

Alternatives To Mainstream Alternative Dispute Resolution: Eliminating Forced Arbitration Agreements As A Condition Of Employment, Anne M. Lofaso, Ashley M. Stephens Nov 2022

Alternatives To Mainstream Alternative Dispute Resolution: Eliminating Forced Arbitration Agreements As A Condition Of Employment, Anne M. Lofaso, Ashley M. Stephens

Utah Law Review

Today, many employers require their employees, as a condition of employment, to agree to arbitrate employment-related legal claims rather than pursue them in court. While arbitration can be mutually beneficial, allowing parties to avoid the cost, time, publicity, and unpredictability associated with traditional litigation, mandatory arbitration often lacks the same procedural safeguards afforded by the justice system. Forced arbitration not only deprives employees of their right to sue their employer in a public court, but it also denies them any meaningful voluntary choice to surrender that right. This Article takes a close look at a variety of workplace grievance procedures …

The Positive And Negative Purcell Principle, Harry B. Dodsworth Nov 2022

The Positive And Negative Purcell Principle, Harry B. Dodsworth

Utah Law Review

The Purcell Principle—the idea that courts should think twice about changing the rules before elections to avoid confusing voters—is sorely misunderstood. Despite deriving from a three-page opinion, the Purcell Principle has morphed into one of the Supreme Court’s most powerful election-law doctrines. By and large, the Court has interpreted the principle as a bright-line rule barring any judicial intervention close to elections and has overwhelmingly used the principle to uphold voting restrictions. That’s a problem because the Purcell Principle is not a bright-line rule. And it’s certainly not one that rubber stamps voting restrictions. To make matters worse, we know …

A Rule-Based/Bpso Approach To Produce Low-Dimensional Semantic Basis Vectors Set, Atefe Pakzad, Morteza Analoui Nov 2022

A Rule-Based/Bpso Approach To Produce Low-Dimensional Semantic Basis Vectors Set, Atefe Pakzad, Morteza Analoui

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The present study aims to generate low-dimensional explicit distributional semantic vectors. In explicit semantic vectors, each dimension corresponds to a word, which makes word vectors interpretable. In this study, a new approach is proposed to obtain low-dimensional explicit semantic vectors. Firstly, the suggested approach considers three criteria, namely, word similarity, number of zeros, and word frequency as features for words in a corpus. Next, some rules are extracted to obtain the initial basis words using a decision tree which is drawn based on the three features. Secondly, a binary weighting method is proposed based on the binary particle swarm optimization …

The 14th Annual Sir Hugh Laddie Lecture - Mr. Justice Laddie And His Intellectual Property Cases: Of Millefeuilles And A Fish Called Elvis, David Vaver

Articles & Book Chapters

For me, it was a trip through the judgments of a master craftsman who could succinctly summarize the dispute before him; weigh the conflicting evidence; say what rang true and what did not; state the applicable law, often from first principles set in their historical and policy context; and end by saying who won and lost and what to do. Copyright law might be "over-strong", as he suggested in a 1996 lecture;14 but when he had to decide whether a TV documentary critical of cheque-book journalism could freely use another channel's footage to make its point, Laddie J. said his …

Keeping Gates Down: Further Narrowing The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act In The Wake Of Van Buren, George F. Leahy Nov 2022

Keeping Gates Down: Further Narrowing The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act In The Wake Of Van Buren, George F. Leahy

William & Mary Business Law Review

Internet-connected devices have become essential parts of personal and professional life. As these devices have grown in importance and prevalence in the workplace, so too have federal computer regulations come into the spotlight. Prior to the Supreme Court’s Decision in Van Buren v. United States, the Circuit Courts of Appeals were split on the interpretation of the “exceeds authorized access” clause of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), a commonly invoked federal law that imposes criminal and civil liability for computer misuse. Although the Court’s narrow holding clarified the definition of “exceeds authorized access,” the Court did not …

An Investigation On The Effects Of Psychological Contract (Pc) Towards Site Safety In The South Indian Construction Industry, M. G. Soundarya Priya, K. S. Anandh, Sathyanarayanan Rajendran, K. N. Sen Nov 2022

An Investigation On The Effects Of Psychological Contract (Pc) Towards Site Safety In The South Indian Construction Industry, M. G. Soundarya Priya, K. S. Anandh, Sathyanarayanan Rajendran, K. N. Sen

Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction Faculty Scholarship

The construction sector is India's second-largest industry, contributing to the country's economy and providing many job opportunities. However, construction has been described as a hazardous industry with a high rate of injuries, accidents, and fatalities compared to other sectors worldwide. The "psychological contract of safety (PCS)" is one of the safety climate (SC) variables that influence worker safety behavior (WSB) actions on construction sites to improve safety. This research investigates the influence of SC factors on PCS and PCS on WSB in construction site safety. A quantitative research method has been adopted in this study, and the data is collected …

Limited Cognitive Ability May Reduce Snap Participation Among Older Adults, Colleen Heflin, Dongmei Zuo, Gabriella Alphonso

Population Health Research Brief Series

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest food and nutrition assistance program in the U.S. For older adults currently on SNAP, meeting administrative requirements to remain on SNAP is difficult due to short recertification time frames, a lack of social support, and cognitive impairment. This brief summarizes results of a recent study examining the impact of cognitive decline on SNAP participation among adults aged 60 yrs. and older. Findings demonstrate that cognitive decline and living alone are associated with reduced SNAP participation, with older females being the most affected.

Addressing A Labor Market Need For Health Managers And Policy Professionals: Development Of A Non-Clinical Health Science Degree Program For Health Policy And Management, Noemi Rodriguez

Publications and Research

Given the United States of America's health care’s rapidly shifting dynamics and demands to recalibrate its traditional operational and financial models particularly under the emergence of unprecedented strains to the healthcare system such as COVID-19, the Department of Health Sciences at the New York City College of Technology (NYCCT), City University of New York developed a four-year undergraduate degree program in healthcare policy and management. It utilizes a didactic and experiential curriculum to prepare students with very little or no healthcare experience to go into a robust and technology oriented labor market in healthcare planning, operations, and policy. Football As Soft Power: The Political Use Of Football In Qatar, The United Arab Emirates And The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Vitas Rafael Carosella Nov 2022

Football As Soft Power: The Political Use Of Football In Qatar, The United Arab Emirates And The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Vitas Rafael Carosella

Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series

In November 2022 Qatar hosts the first Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region FIFA World Cup. This paper seeks to understand the use of football as a soft power political tool in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Based on culture, values and policies, soft power is power through attraction as opposed to coercion. The stronger one player’s values, culture and policies are, the more soft power that player has. Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, traditional fossil fuel-based states, suffer from a lack of attraction. By investing in football, each nation hopes …

Chimanga Changa Limited V Export Trading Limited (Scz Appeal No. 3 Of 2022), Ntemena Mwanamwambwa, Chenela Mwale-Simbotwe

SAIPAR Case Review

The Supreme Court’s decision in Chimanga Changa has set a clear and resounding tone as well as a sound precedent in the Jurisprudence of Zambian Corporate Insolvency law, specifically in relation to how voluntary business rescue proceedings should be commenced, when they commence and most importantly that an application objecting to the commencement of business rescue proceedings pursuant to section 22(1), does not answer to the definition of a legal proceeding for purposes of effecting a moratorium within the confines of section 25 of the Act.

A Better Way: Using Richard Hooker's Notion Of 'Image Of God' To Work Through And Past Microaggressions In The Episcopal Church, Tamara J. Knowles Nov 2022

A Better Way: Using Richard Hooker's Notion Of 'Image Of God' To Work Through And Past Microaggressions In The Episcopal Church, Tamara J. Knowles

Doctor of Ministry

I claim behavior described as microaggressions can be mitigated via spiritual practices based in the virtue ethics of love of neighbor and intellectual humility. This is done using Richard Hooker's construct of the ‘image of God’, within his theological anthropology wherein the reason, will, appetite, and passions are kept in balance as they pursue perfection, understood as goodness, which is an expression of the divine and natural laws. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methodology to identify when these elements become too great in relation to the others affecting behavior maladaptively, we can seek a "reset" via a cognitive behavioral therapy approach. …

Leveraging Text Mining For Trend Analysis And Comparison Of Sustainability Reports: Evidence From Fortune 500 Companies, Anuj Sharma, Kapil Kaushik, Prakash Awasthy, Abhishek Gawande

American Business Review

In the recent upsurge in environmental concerns, business sustainability has become more prominent than ever. Organizations worldwide are expected to function sustainably, causing the least negative impact on the environment and promoting harmony among the firm, environment, and society. Most firms report their actions related to sustainability in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. This research aims to understand and analyze contemporary trends in CSR reports by Fortune 500 companies using text mining. It compares how the focus of sustainability reports varies across countries and industries along key dimensions of sustainability (i.e., environmental, economic, social, and government). Findings from the study …

Efficient Supply Chain Contracting With Loss-Averse Players In Presence Of Multiple Plausible Breaches, Arijit Mitra, Sumit Sarkar Nov 2022

Efficient Supply Chain Contracting With Loss-Averse Players In Presence Of Multiple Plausible Breaches, Arijit Mitra, Sumit Sarkar

American Business Review

The legal literature distinguishes between the liquidated damage and the penalty clauses in contracts, and holds that penalties designed for the prevention of breach are excessive compared to the liquidated damages. In an efficient supply chain contract, the penalty must satisfy the participation and incentive compatibility constraints of the signatories. Considering loss-averse players, we have calculated optimal penalties in a supply chain contract and compared those with the liquidated damages. Two possible breaches are considered – a breach in quality of the delivery and a breach in the process. In the absence of any penalty, a process breach reduces the …

Can Gender And Major Explain College Students’ Performance In Business Statistics?, Waros Ngamsiriudom, Mitra L. Devkota, Mohan K. Menon

American Business Review

Recent discussions in education, industry, and government have focused on the need for growth and diversity in STEM fields. STEM education and practice directly contribute to the economic vitality of a nation and benefit its citizens. Yet, STEM education and employment growth seem lopsided concerning both gender and diversity. While researchers have studied various dimensions of this phenomenon, this paper seeks to add to the knowledge base by analyzing the effects of gender and college major on performance and attitudes in statistics-related courses. T-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression were used to investigate the effects of gender, major, …

Applying Technology To Promote Sexual And Reproductive Health And Prevent Gender Based Violence For Adolescents In Low And Middle-Income Countries: Digital Health Strategies Synthesis From An Umbrella Review, Keng-Yen Huang, Manasi Kumar, Sabrina Cheng, Anya Elena Urcuyo, Paul Macharia Nov 2022

Applying Technology To Promote Sexual And Reproductive Health And Prevent Gender Based Violence For Adolescents In Low And Middle-Income Countries: Digital Health Strategies Synthesis From An Umbrella Review, Keng-Yen Huang, Manasi Kumar, Sabrina Cheng, Anya Elena Urcuyo, Paul Macharia

Brain and Mind Institute

Aim: Adolescents in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing numerous developmental, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges including exposure to multidimensional violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) specifically intimate partner violence (IPV) are both highly prevalent in LMICs and are strongly linked with poor SRH outcomes. However, GBV and IPV interventions have not yet been adequately integrated in SRH due to individual, social, cultural, service, and resource barriers. To promote long-term SRH, a more holistic approach that integrates GBV and IPV, and adolescent development needs is imperative. Digital health has the potential to address multiple service setup, provision, and addressing access barriers through …

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements Nov 2022

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements

Postgraduate

The representation of disability in creative media is problematic. There have been several tests proposed that analyse disability representation within a media text, in an attempt to determine if a media text represents disability appropriately. In this thesis, I discuss several existing tests of disability representation within media texts, identifying problems in each. I propose a new test for disability representation to address these problems. I then apply the test described in this thesis to media texts within the spheres of film, television, fictional literature, comics and games. Using the qualitative method of autoethnography combined with discourse analysis, I will …

Improvements To The Automatic Calibration Of Digital Focusing Color Schlieren Systems, Robert C. Frazee Nov 2022

Improvements To The Automatic Calibration Of Digital Focusing Color Schlieren Systems, Robert C. Frazee

LSU Master's Theses

As a diagnostic method, Schlieren imaging offers the unique ability to visualize flows with a completely non-intrusive method. By visualizing small changes in the refractive index of a fluid, Schlieren imaging is able to visualize changes in temperature, pressure, and composition. While historic Schlieren methods have been limited to providing largely qualitative information, modern Schlieren methods are able to extract quantitative information from flow phenomena. This is possible through either Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) or Digital Focusing Color Schlieren (DFCS) methods. While BOS is relatively flexible, it requires a large amount of computational effort to process each frame of captured …

Police Reform Through Section 1983, Adam J. Smith Nov 2022

Police Reform Through Section 1983, Adam J. Smith

Northern Illinois University Law Review

For decades, members of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) engaged in a protracted campaign of corruption, terror, and violence against Black and brown Chicagoans. Intermittent efforts to reform or otherwise rein in the CPD invariably fell short. In late 2014, a CPD officer murdered a 17-year-old Chicagoan, Laquan McDonald. CPD officials and city leaders attempted to whitewash the killing as a justified use of deadly force, but—thanks to the work of local organizers and a national pressure campaign—McDonald’s death instead led to a yearlong investigation by the federal Department of Justice (DOJ). Ordinarily, such an investigation would have resulted in …
