Dense Array Seismic Imaging Of Earth's Crust Using Active And Passive Sources, Evans Awere Onyango Nov 2022

Dense Array Seismic Imaging Of Earth's Crust Using Active And Passive Sources, Evans Awere Onyango

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Imaging Earth’s crust is critical to understanding processes in the near-surface that affect civilization such as the interaction of seismic waves with the near-surface to generate natural or man-made hazards or investigating how the shallow crust affects the distribution of resources. In chapter 1, I processed and analyzed active source seismic data recorded by ~1000 geophones that were acquired over the legacy HADDOCK nuclear test at the Nevada National Security Site. Using seismic reflection and refraction methods, we image the partially collapsed post-detonation structure to better understand the velocity structure in and around the HADDOCK chimney. The Effects Of Methanol Clustering On Methanol-Water Nucleation, Tong Sun, Gerald Wilemski, Barbara N. Hale, Barbara E. Wyslouzil

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The formation of subcritical methanol clusters in the vapor phase is known to complicate the analysis of nucleation measurements. Here, we investigate how this process affects the onset of binary nucleation as dilute water-methanol mixtures in nitrogen carrier gas expand in a supersonic nozzle. These are the first reported data for water-methanol nucleation in an expansion device. We start by extending an older monomer-dimer-tetramer equilibrium model to include larger clusters, relying on Helmholtz free energy differences derived from Monte Carlo simulations. The model is validated against the pressure/temperature measurements of Laksmono et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 13, 5855 (2011)] …

Concerns regarding inappropriate leakage of sensitive personal information as well as unauthorized data use are increasing with the growth of genomic data repositories. Therefore, privacy and security of genomic data have become increasingly important and need to be studied. With many proposed protection techniques, their applicability in support of biomedical research should be well understood. For this purpose, we have organized a community effort in the past 8 years through the integrating data for analysis, anonymization and sharing consortium to address this practical challenge. In this article, we summarize our experience from these competitions, report lessons learned from the events …

Evolution Of Shock-Driven Multi-Phase Instability, Joshua Chavez Nov 2022

Evolution Of Shock-Driven Multi-Phase Instability, Joshua Chavez

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

ABSTRACT

In many models and experiments using shock tubes and shock tube instabilities, measurements of velocity and position of the flow features are frequently taken in a single horizontal direction (or in one plane), however, the three-dimensional flow structure is important and cannot be fully resolved by such measurements. By placing a mirror at 45 degrees atop a test section of a shock tube, it becomes possible to visualize the flow from two directions simultaneously. The mirror is used to see if viable data can be gathered from the second view in conjunction with the main view. With high-speed video …

Mosque Architecture In Contemporary Popular Cultures: A Critical Perspective, Mona Helmy Nov 2022

Mosque Architecture In Contemporary Popular Cultures: A Critical Perspective, Mona Helmy

Architectural Engineering

This research paper claims that among important phenomena of several forms of contemporary mosques, there is a blurring of a clear distinction between their related popular/low cultural and formal/high-cultural status. For many centuries, high cultural mosques that are following what so called “formal architectural aesthetics” exist, which shaped by specific sets of well-established design principles and elements, trends, styles, tastes, designs, etc. Parallel to that, mosques in a context of popular cultures are shaped by folkloric signals, signs, and symbols, producing what can be called “Informal aesthetics”.

The popularization of mosque architecture in various contexts of cultural communities has different …

Increased Circulating Cortisol After Vaginal Birth Is Associated With Increased Fgf19 Secretion In Neonatal Pigs, Caitlin Vonderohe, Gregory Guthrie, Barbara Stoll, Valeria Melendez Hebib, Harry Dawson, Douglas Burrin

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

The influence of birth modality (scheduled cesarean or spontaneous vaginal) on the development of the newborn has been a source of controversy in neonatology. The impact of cesarean vs vaginal birth on the development of bile acid and fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) signaling is unknown. Our aim was to determine the effect of birth modality and gestational age (preterm vs term) on plasma hormone levels, bile acid pool distribution, expression of genes in the bile acid-FXR-FGF19 pathway, and plasma levels of FGF19 at birth and on day 3 of life in neonatal pigs. Four sows underwent cesarean delivery on …

Moral Foundations In Bunkerville And Malheur, David Keith Frey Nov 2022

Moral Foundations In Bunkerville And Malheur, David Keith Frey

Theses and Dissertations

The events of the Bunkerville standoff and the Malheur wildlife refuge occupation were both important confrontations with the government by the western land rights movement. Participants in and responders to the events engage in distinct moral judgments and rationales. Utilizing cultural schema analysis and moral foundations theory (MFT), I explored the differences in rationales and judgments made by participants and responders in their explicit, public moral discourses of both events. My analysis indicates that responders and participants defined and utilized the same moral foundations, but in distinct ways. Participants were more diverse in their invocation of moral foundations while responders …

Gating Intermediates Reveal Inhibitory Role Of The Voltage Sensor In A Cyclic Nucleotide-Modulated Ion Channel, Xiaolong Gao, Philipp A M Schmidpeter, Vladimir Berka, Ryan J Durham, Chen Fan, Vasanthi Jayaraman, Crina M Nimigean

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Understanding how ion channels gate is important for elucidating their physiological roles and targeting them in pathophysiological states. Here, we used SthK, a cyclic nucleotide-modulated channel from Spirochaeta thermophila, to define a ligand-gating trajectory that includes multiple on-pathway intermediates. cAMP is a poor partial agonist for SthK and depolarization increases SthK activity. Tuning the energy landscape by gain-of-function mutations in the voltage sensor domain (VSD) allowed us to capture multiple intermediates along the ligand-activation pathway, highlighting the allosteric linkage between VSD, cyclic nucleotide-binding (CNBD) and pore domains. Small, lateral displacements of the VSD S4 segment were necessary to open the …

Collective Proving Activity In A Synchronous Online Environment, Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo Nov 2022

Collective Proving Activity In A Synchronous Online Environment, Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo

Dissertations and Theses

Given the well documented fact students often struggle with proof and proof-related activity for various reasons, more educators have shifted to incorporating pedagogies involving collaborative learning given their benefits to student learning. However, there is still surprisingly little research focused on the nature of students' collaborative proving activity. Moreover, the recent COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent shift to remote learning, forced educators and students to adapt and learn how to work within a new learning environment. In this dissertation project, I investigate how students engage in collaborative proving activity in a synchronous online introduction to proofs course. In the first paper, …

Addressing environmental pollution and climate change is one of the biggest sociotechnical challenges of our time. While information technology has led to improvements in healthcare, it has also contributed to increased energy usage, destructive natural resource extraction, piles of e-waste, and increased greenhouse gases. We introduce a framework "Information technology-enabled Clinical cLimate InforMAtics acTions for the Environment" (i-CLIMATE) to illustrate how clinical informatics can help reduce healthcare's environmental pollution and climate-related impacts using 5 actionable components: (1) create a circular economy for health IT, (2) reduce energy consumption through smarter use of health IT, (3) support more environmentally friendly decision-making …

Region-Specific Denoising Identifies Spatial Co-Expression Patterns And Intra-Tissue Heterogeneity In Spatially Resolved Transcriptomics Data, Linhua Wang, Mirjana Maletic-Savatic, Zhandong Liu Nov 2022

Region-Specific Denoising Identifies Spatial Co-Expression Patterns And Intra-Tissue Heterogeneity In Spatially Resolved Transcriptomics Data, Linhua Wang, Mirjana Maletic-Savatic, Zhandong Liu

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Spatially resolved transcriptomics is a relatively new technique that maps transcriptional information within a tissue. Analysis of these datasets is challenging because gene expression values are highly sparse due to dropout events, and there is a lack of tools to facilitate in silico detection and annotation of regions based on their molecular content. Therefore, we develop a computational tool for detecting molecular regions and region-based Missing value Imputation for Spatially Transcriptomics (MIST). We validate MIST-identified regions across multiple datasets produced by 10x Visium Spatial Transcriptomics, using manually annotated histological images as references. We benchmark MIST against a spatial k-nearest neighboring …

Thanatechnology: Designing For Death, Samantha Grace Bruner

Theses and Dissertations

Thanatechnology, or the study of death technology, is based within the human need to “figure out” death. Through the ages, humans have used technology to further our understanding of what it means to die and what it means to mourn as a way of figuring out what it means to live. Digital data is a huge part of recent digital technology and includes social media data which is a part of many peoples’ daily lives. This leads to many questions including what happens to social media pages when someone dies. These “digital graveyards” leave a lasting impact on many social …

Inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs) are activated by IP3 and Ca2+ and their gating is regulated by various intracellular messengers that finely tune the channel activity. Here, using single particle cryo-EM analysis we determined 3D structures of the nanodisc-reconstituted IP3R1 channel in two ligand-bound states. These structures provide unprecedented details governing binding of IP3, Ca2+ and ATP, revealing conformational changes that couple ligand-binding to channel opening. Using a deep-learning approach and 3D variability analysis we extracted molecular motions of the key protein domains from cryo-EM density data. We find that IP3 binding relies upon intrinsic flexibility of the ARM2 domain in the …

Health Professions Education

Purpose. Interprofessional collaboration is an important aspect of health practice. Individuals with communication and/or swallowing impairments are often managed by interdisciplinary teams including speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and other healthcare professionals. Literature reports that other allied health professionals may not be confident working with this caseload and little evidence exists that explores undergraduate allied health students’ confidence, knowledge, and experience working with this caseload, and as part of an interdisciplinary team. Such knowledge is essential in order to inform curriculum and to improve overall professional practice and patient outcomes. This research aimed to investigate: (1) the knowledge and confidence of non-SLP …
