Snapping shrimp damp the shock waves they produce and use as weapons with a helmet-like structure termed the orbital hood. Here, we ask how structural and material properties contribute to shock wave damping by orbital hoods in Alpheus heterochaelis. Using tensile mechanical testing, we find orbital hoods are approximately half as stiff as carapace and have twice the capacity for viscous energy dissipation. Microstructural features probably contribute to tissue-specific mechanical properties: the endocuticles of orbital hoods have almost twice as many lamellae as those of carapaces despite being half as thick, suggesting a mechanism for enhanced material mobility underlying …
Experiences Of Care-Seeking Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In India, Yash Navnit Patel
Experiences Of Care-Seeking Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In India, Yash Navnit Patel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 18 million individuals in India, yet the factors influencing parental care-seeking behavior were not well understood. Guided by the health belief model, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how parents’ perceived severity of a child’s symptoms, parental beliefs about the causes of autism, and perceived mental and physical health outcomes of caregiving influence parents’ intention to seek services for children aged 1–10 years diagnosed with ASD in India. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 10 mothers of autistic children. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-step thematic analysis. …

Impact Of Incentive Policies On Mathematics And Science Teachers’ Retention In Guyana’S Rural Secondary Schools, Verna Adrian
Impact Of Incentive Policies On Mathematics And Science Teachers’ Retention In Guyana’S Rural Secondary Schools, Verna Adrian
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on teacher retention in rural areas highlights persistent challenges, including geographic isolation, limited resources, and inadequate support. Studies have shown that financial incentives are critical for sustaining teacher retention, but a gap in the literature exists as to what specific non-financial challenges may also be important in influencing teachers’ long-term commitment. To address the social problem of teacher retention in rural secondary schools in Guyana, this study assessed the effectiveness of incentive policies in retaining teachers across four selected regions facing unique challenges. Data were collected through semi structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The purpose of this …

Vigorous debate has erupted over the trustworthiness of scientific research findings in a number of domains. The question "what makes research findings trustworthy?" elicits different answers depending on whether the emphasis is on research integrity and ethics, research methods, transparency, inclusion, assessment and peer review, or scholarly communication. Each provides partial insight. We offer a systems approach that focuses on whether the research is accountable, evaluable, well-formulated, has been evaluated, controls for bias, reduces error, and whether the claims are warranted by the evidence. We tie each of these components to measurable indicators of trustworthiness for evaluating the research itself, …

Study objectives: GGIR is an R package for processing raw acceleration data to estimate sleep health parameters. We aimed to (1) assess the performance of three sleep algorithms within GGIR against PSG for detecting sleep/wake in clinically referred, typically-developing children (criterion validity); and (2) describe GGIR-derived sleep estimates from typically developing children enrolled in multiple cohort studies (face validity).
Methods: For criterion evaluation, children (8-16 years, N = 30) wore an actigraphy device for one night during in-lab polysomnography with performance assessed using epoch-by-epoch analyses. For face validity evaluation, four community/free living datasets were used: (1) Bone Mineral Accretion in …
Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan
Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan
Landas
This essay examines how language marginalizes animals by reducing them to “it,” obscuring their cognition, agency, communication, empathy, and giftedness. Such linguistic marginalization intersects with metaphors and colloquialisms that demean both women and animals and is reinforced by anthropocentric philosophical and theological traditions. While Thomistic thought has often emphasized human superiority, Thomas Aquinas also presents animals as participants in God’s community of creation who reveal divine goodness and glory. Drawing on animal reciprocity and feminist animal care, particularly entangled empathy, this essay proposes an ethic that recognizes animals in their wholeness and uniqueness. Naming becomes a countercultural practice that resists …
The Role Of The Cosmic Christ In God’S Universal Salvific Plan: An Assessment Of Michael Amaladoss’ Christology, Manuel V. Francisco
The Role Of The Cosmic Christ In God’S Universal Salvific Plan: An Assessment Of Michael Amaladoss’ Christology, Manuel V. Francisco
Landas
This paper examines Michael Amaladoss’s Christology, particularly his understanding of the Cosmic Christ within God’s universal salvific plan. Situated within Indian contextual theology and religious pluralism, it explores his use of Advaitic philosophy, symbolic hermeneutics, and dialogical theology in relating Christianity to other religions. Amaladoss maintains that God’s salvific activity extends beyond the historical Christ-event and is mediated through diverse religious traditions. His distinction, without separation, between the historical Jesus and the Cosmic Christ emphasizes Christ’s universal presence beyond and within the incarnation. The paper critically assesses these claims in light of Chalcedonian Christology, Vatican II, and Dominus Iesus, highlighting …

Tensions In Translating: The Case Of The Misa Ng Bayang Pilipino, Teofilo Giovan S. Pugeda Iii
Landas
The Misa ng Bayang Pilipino (MBP) is an attempt at liturgical inculturation. Yet the inaction of the Roman Curia in the 1990s regarding the MBP is partly explainable by the MBP's use of the dynamic equivalence theory of translation and inculturated expression at a moment when norms on translation promoted by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments were shifting towards the formal equivalence theory. As a result, it appears that the MBP came into tension with the policy changes for liturgical translation at the time. In a certain way, the translational differences between the MBP …

The First Companions: Finding Grace In Dispersion, Sickness, And Conflict, Christopher M. Staab
Landas
In his letter “Confirmed in the Charism,” Father General Arturo Sosa SJ invited the Society of Jesus to understand better how “the first companions were able to read the motions of the good Spirit.” This presentation responds to Fr. Sosa’s call by examining how Ignatius and the first companions found grace in their experiences of dispersion, illness, and conflict. These difficult human experiences fill their extant texts and, as such, provide us with the opportunity to discover how they lived their quotidian apostolic work. Dispersion, illness, and conflict were not experiences to be overcome, but rather experiences to be lived …

The Status Of Societies Of Apostolic Life. A Canonical Overview: From The Code Of 1917 To Vatican Ii, Arnaud Touré
Landas
This article is the second in a series on societies of apostolic life published in Landas. While the first article provided a historiographical account of the history of societies of apostolic life, that is, the fundamental circumstances and reasons underlying the creation of such societies, in this second article, the topic is addressed from the canonical aspect. It examines the canonical status of societies of apostolic life, beginning with the drafting process that led to canon 673 of the 1917 Code. It then explores the characteristics of these societies as outlined in that Code and in subsequent magisterial teachings up …

Proposal For An Intensive Outpatient Program, Dorcas Olatokunbo Ogundemuren
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) executive leadership systems improvement program presents the design of an evidence-based intensive outpatient program (IOP) in a community psychiatric clinic in the central region area of Maryland, to address the practice problem of fragmented transitions from inpatient psychiatry to routine outpatient services. This practice gap contributes to avoidable 30-day readmissions and prolonged emergency department boarding. The guiding practice question was as follows: In behavioral health organizations, how does a leadership-driven IOP implementation affect care transitions, staff engagement, and protocol adherence compared with existing discharge workflows? Local organizational indicators reveal elevated psychiatric readmission rates and …

Nav1.7 is a voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) subtype predominantly expressed in sensory neurons, amplifying threshold currents. Here, we identify that Uvarigranol D (UGD) suppresses human (h) Nav1.7 with a much greater maximal inhibition than other VGSC subtypes, despite having similar apparent affinities. We demonstrate that Thr1398 determines the greater inhibitory efficacy of UGD, the leftward shift in voltage-dependence and faster inactivation kinetics of hNav1.7. UGD binds to the inactivated state, with Gln360, Ile394, Lys1395, Phe1737, and Tyr1744 being critically involved. Moreover, while UGD suppresses action potentials in both rat dorsal root ganglion neurons and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used for documentation purposes in clinical practice, yet guidance for resident use is limited. Given the substantial documentation burden on medical trainees, AI-powered scribing tools may offer benefits, but their integration into residency training raises educational, supervisory, and patient safety considerations. This study aimed to assess the availability of resident-specific guidance on AI scribe use from major medical and specialty organizations and to summarize current evidence on AI scribes in residency. We reviewed five major medical and specialty society websites (AAD, AMA, ACGME, AAMC, ABMS) via website searches and direct emails and conducted a PubMed …

Two closely homologous channelrhodopsins from Hyphochytrium catenoides, known as HcKCR1 (kalium channelrhodopsin 1) and HcCCR (cation channelrhodopsin), exhibit >100 times different K+/Na+ relative permeabilities and are emerging optogenetic tools for controlling neurons and cardiomyocytes. Key residue motifs and trimeric organization relate them structurally to bacteriorhodopsin-like cation channelrhodopsins (BCCRs). Here, we demonstrate that they utilize a specific gating mechanism previously suggested for the earlier-discovered BCCR from cryptophytes. Using a comparative analysis of transient absorption changes and photocurrents under single-turnover conditions, we identified an early, far-UV-absorbing photocycle intermediate that precedes channel opening in wild-type HcKCR1 and HcCCR. The UV-absorbing product is a …

Describing intermolecular forces is fundamental to modeling and predicting the behavior of molecular systems. In particular, long-range molecular interactions with electrostatic, induction, and dispersion as the main components play a critical role, especially for low-temperature and low-density regimes. Long-range interactions are often described through perturbation theory, representing the electronic charge distribution via a multipolar series of the moments and polarizability tensors corresponding to each molecule. However, while the theory is well established, obtaining the resulting analytical expressions (and their practical implementation) constitutes a highly complex and system-dependent task. To address this challenge, we developed long-range-fit (LRF), an interactive and user-friendly …

Identifying biomolecules that shape nuclear organization is essential for understanding gene regulation in health and disease. Oncogenic fusion proteins rewire chromosome folding and generate biomolecular condensates, but the cofactors of oncoprotein-driven chromatin regulation remain poorly defined, and whether such factors have analogous functions in fusion-naïve cells is unknown. We find that NSD3 mediates chromosome folding in fusion-positive and fusion-negative cells. NSD3 stabilizes the BRD4-NUT fusion oncoprotein on chromatin, promotes histone H3K36me2, and supports oncogene expression while maintaining BRD4-NUT nuclear condensates. NSD3 loss attenuates distant chromatin interactions between BRD4-NUT megadomains both within and between chromosomes. In cells lacking BRD4-NUT, the short, …

Sleep disturbances are prominent across neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and may reflect specific abnormalities in brain development and function. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) allows for detailed investigation of sleep architecture, offering a unique window into neurocircuit function. Analysis of existing pediatric PSGs from clinical studies could enhance the availability of sleep studies in pediatric patients with NDDs towards a better understanding of mechanisms underlying abnormal development in NDDs. Here, we introduce and characterize a retrospective collection of 1527 clinical pediatric overnight PSGs across five different sites. We first developed an automated stager trained on independent pediatric sleep data, which yielded better performance …
