How A Holistic Approach To People Of Reproductive Age Can Support Access To Preconception Care For People Living With Health Conditions: Findings From A Realist Evaluation, Heather Hopper, Kerryn Husk, Kate Maslin, Jill Shawe

School of Nursing and Midwifery

This realist evaluation explored how access to preconception care works for people with pre-existing health conditions, for whom, and in what contexts. Thirty one participants (women of reproductive age, partners, and healthcare professionals) were interviewed using qualitative realist methods. Iterative analysis refined 35 initial programme theories into 13 middle range theories. The theory reported here identifies healthcare professionals’ knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, understanding of pregnancy planning, and enquiry regarding pregnancy intention as key mechanisms. In the context of diagnosis or review, these resources support holistic and individualized preconception care, enabling improved preconception health and reduced adverse maternal and …

Translating Low-Level Features Into Student Friendly Explanations Using Xai, Ben Johnson, Keith Nolan Feb 2026

Translating Low-Level Features Into Student Friendly Explanations Using Xai, Ben Johnson, Keith Nolan

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

An alarming decline in Gaeilge proficiency has renewed education efforts, fueled by the rise of AI in recent years. This research presents the development of a deep learning framework designed to evaluate spoken Gaeilge (henceforth Irish) proficiency of learners by quantifying student voice sample similarity to everyday Irish speaker truth samples, combined with explainable AI (XAI) techniques used to generate proof-of-concept student-friendly feedback. While automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for high-resource languages like English have access to large, detailed datasets, the Irish language relies on a limited availability of speech resources, that challenges traditional model development. We address these gaps …

Towards A Framework For Bias Evaluation Of Ai Agents In Agentic Workflows, Gary Condon, Musfira Jilani

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Multi-agent AI systems, with minimal human oversight, are increasingly deployed in high-stakes domains like hiring, healthcare, and criminal justice. However, existing bias evaluation methodologies focus on isolated Large Language Model responses, failing to address sequential agent interactions where biases can propagate through decision chains undetected. Current approaches suffer from three limitations: absence of multi-stage bias tracking, inability to distinguish systematic discrimination from model non-determinism, and risk of contamination when agents infer bias evaluation intent. This study presents a novel evaluation framework incorporating demographic swapping methodology, contamination prevention architecture, and statistical analysis for multi-agent workflows. The framework employs dual presentation systems …

Modeling Spasticity: A Systematic Review, Gaby Gonzalez Chan, Jonathan Marsden, Alexander Besinis, Pablo Borja, Hilary Gunn Feb 2026

Modeling Spasticity: A Systematic Review, Gaby Gonzalez Chan, Jonathan Marsden, Alexander Besinis, Pablo Borja, Hilary Gunn

School of Health Professions

Spasticity, a type of hypertonia characterized by a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone, is associated with damage to the brain and/or spinal cord in different neurological conditions. However, secondary non-neurological factors, such as soft tissue changes, can complicate the assessment and differentiation of the underlying causes. Accurate assessment is crucial for effective treatment planning, with clinicians relying on passive movement to grade the ‘feel’ of the spastic limb. This review aims to identify and evaluate the feasibility of spasticity models or simulations for clinical teaching. Models based on human spastic limbs were examined, with no restrictions on specific conditions or …

Radiation therapy (RT) is the standard of care for glioblastoma but is not curative. Triggering the cGAS/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway with potent agonists, such as 8803, exerts activity across high-grade glioma preclinical models. To determine if the combination of 8803 with RT warrants consideration in the up-front treatment setting and to clarify the underlying mechanisms of therapeutic activity, C57BL/6J mice harboring intracerebral CT-2A or QPP8v gliomas were treated with RT, intratumoral 8803, or both. The treatment with the combination resulted in 80% long-term survival in the CT-2A model but not in the radiation-resistant QPP8v model. This therapeutic effect …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Somatic KRAS (KRASG12V) mutation in endothelial cells (EC) induces brain arteriovenous malformation (bAVM) that could lead to vascular instability and ultimately bleeding. However, the causes of bAVM instability remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that KRASG12V expressing cultured ECs (KRAS-G12V-EC) have increased expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and reduced expression of blood-brain-barrier (BBB) junction constituents. The conditioned medium from KRAS-G12V-EC can activate BV2-microglia (BV2-MG) and conditioned media from this primed BV2-MG can compromise the expression of EC-junction constituents when added to wild-type ECs. In an in vitro BBB model, KRAS-G12V-EC form a dysfunctional EC barrier that is further disrupted, leading to lower …

Discourses On Homosexuality And The Paradox Of The Closet In The New Life (2023) By Tom Crewe, Paramita Ayuningtyas, Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan, Asri Saraswati

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This article offers a critical examination of Tom Crewe's biographical novel The New Life (2023), focusing on its representation of homosexual subjectivity in Victorian England—a historical context defined by restrictive moral norms and punitive legal regimes that criminalised same-sex relationships. Drawing on Michel Foucault's theory of discursive power, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's concept of the closet, and Michael Boucai's topology of the closet, the study demonstrates that the novel portrays the closet not merely as a private site of concealment but as a complex social mechanism shaped by legal regulation, gender norms, and class-based power relations. Building on this theoretical framework, …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background: Navigational bronchoscopy (NB) enables precise sampling of peripheral and central pulmonary nodules using shape-sensing or electromagnetic guidance. A major challenge is anesthesia-induced atelectasis, which alters lung anatomy, reduces registration accuracy, and is known to lower diagnostic accuracy. To counteract this, ventilatory protocols such as the Ventilatory Strategy to Prevent Atelectasis (VESPA) and the Lung Navigation Ventilation Protocol (LNVP) have been recommended. Their adoption and clinical impact, however, remain uncertain. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 224 consecutive NB procedures performed under general anesthesia at a single academic medical center (January 2020–August 2024). Demographic, anesthetic, and ventilatory data were …

Communicative Legitimacy: The Supreme Court's Hidden Cultural Binaries In The U.S. Civil Sphere, Steven Arrigg Koh

Faculty Scholarship

How does the U.S. Supreme Court establish its legitimacy? Over the last two hundred years in U.S. society, the Court has interpreted the U.S. Constitution on watershed issues such as slavery, segregation, and marriage equality. And yet the Constitution is just 7,591 words. A puzzle thus emerges: how does the Court intelligibly interpret this short text for U.S. society? This article develops a new theoretical and empirical cultural sociological account of such Supreme Court decision-making, which it calls “communicative legitimacy.” According to this theory, which draws on Jeffrey Alexander’s civil sphere theory, the Court consistently and inevitably draws on a …

Strspy2.0: Unlocking The Potential Of Long Reads For Forensic Dna Profiling, Courtney L Hall, Rupesh K Kesharwani, Katherine E Mcbroom Henson, Bupe Kapema, Nicole R Phillips, Fritz J Sedlazeck, Roxanne R Zascavage

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Forensic human identification relies on length-based differences in short tandem repeats (STRs) across autosomal and Y chromosomes, which require separate reactions and provide limited resolution. While next-generation sequencing offers greater discriminatory power, most platforms are expensive and restricted to traditional lab settings. Nanopore sequencing has the potential to change this with the real-time, portable MinION sequencer. However, forensic-specific tools that generate STR profiles compatible with established length-based databases are lacking. To address this, we developed STRspy2.0, which simultaneously profiles autosomal and Y-STRs using nanopore reads. STRspy2.0 produced accurate profiles for 54 multiplexed control libraries and 41 mock casework samples (blood, …
