Evidence-Based Practice Medication Reconciliation Protocol: Process To Increase Adherence To Medication Reconciliation Process, Oksana Bregman
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: The practice problem for the primary care facility is the inconsistent completion of medication reconciliation (MR) by primary care providers (PCPs), despite attempts by some providers to compare the clinic medication list with the external records and update the electronic health records (EHR). The absence of a standardized evidence-based practice (EBP) MR protocol has resulted in variable practices and increased risk for medication discrepancies during patient encounters.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In primary care providers (P), how does the Evidence-based practice process redesign and workflow optimization protocol (I) compared to current practice (C) …

Background: Parents are children’s primary role models, are food and physical activity gatekeepers, and create the home structure/lifestyle environment. Thus, parents strongly influence children’s weight-related behaviors and have the opportunity to cultivate a “culture of health” within the home. Methods: The aim of the HomeStyles-2 (also called HomeStyles-Child) RCT was to determine whether this online, novel, age-appropriate, family intervention enabled and motivated the 131 systematically randomly assigned by computer parents of children in middle childhood (ages 6 to 11) in the experimental condition to shape home environments and healthy weight-related lifestyle practices to be more supportive of optimal health and …
Feeding Negativity On Social Media: How Compensating Customers Creates Vicious Cycles Of Complaint, Yuchi Zhang, Kunpeng Zhang
Feeding Negativity On Social Media: How Compensating Customers Creates Vicious Cycles Of Complaint, Yuchi Zhang, Kunpeng Zhang
Marketing
Purpose
The study explores the paradoxical impact of managerial responses to negative comments on social media, revealing how offering compensation inadvertently escalates negativity into a vicious cycle. Through a unique Facebook policy quasi-experiment, we show that apologies, in contrast, effectively neutralize further complaints.
Design/methodology/approach
We utilize interactive data on Facebook to assess how firms' managerial responses to negative comments – particularly responses involving compensation topics – affect the volume and tone of subsequent complaints. Additionally, we use instrumental variables and difference-in-differences (DID) models to account for potential sources of endogeneity.
Findings
The results reveal that managerial response increase both the …

How Does Striving Against Adversity Impact Emotional Well-Being And Cardiovascular Risk In Children?, Brooks B. Gump, Stefanie Pilkay, Xiafei Wang, Sara Vasilenko, Nader H. Attallah-Yunes, Sarah Woolf-King, Stephen Maisto, Edith Chen, Craig K. Ewart
Population Health Research Brief Series
Working hard and persisting through challenges (i.e., striving) are often encouraged for children who face adversity. But for children facing severe adversity, striving can come with hidden costs. This brief summarizes findings from a study using data from the Environmental Exposures and Child Health Outcomes (EECHO) cohort (N=283, 2013-2017) of children ages 9-11 in Syracuse, NY. The authors find that children facing adversity who strived harder reported lower depression and hostility. However, high-striving high-adversity children also experienced significantly higher blood pressure and enlarged heart chambers than their lower striving peers, both risk factors for future heart disease.

Background
Humanized APOE targeted-replacement (TR) mice are essential tools for studying apoE isoform effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other apoE-related disorders. Despite their widespread use, existing APOE mouse models, generated with different gene targeting strategies, have not been directly compared in terms of apoE isoform expression, lipid profiles, and transcriptomic signatures. Such differences could impact how we interpret APOE genotype-related outcomes, as well as related underlying molecular mechanisms.
Methods
We conducted a comprehensive molecular comparison of humanized APOE mouse models from three sources: Taconic Biosciences (TAC), the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (CAF), and The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). We assessed apoE …

Photoplethysmography For Measuring Cognitive Load In Xr Environments: A Systematic Review, Alya Alshehhi, Qammer H. Abbasi, Rami Ghannam
School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a low-cost, low-power biosensing technology with growing applications in education, particularly for monitoring cognitive load in eXtended Reality (XR) learning environments. Measuring cognitive load is critical for preventing overload and optimising immersive learning, yet existing approaches such as self-reports or Electroencephalography (EEG) are often intrusive, costly or impractical for real-time use. This systematic review is the first to synthesize a decade of research (2015–2025) on the use of PPG for cognitive load measurement in XR. Twenty-three studies were identified and analysed according to PRISMA guidelines, with attention to sensor placement, integration with other modalities, research design, and …

ObjectivesClinical psychology interventions for reducing obesity have developed alongside pharmacological and surgical treatments, but usually as interventions for individual patients. Any healthcare intervention rests on a logic model: assumptions that through specific physical and social mechanisms, it will produce certain intended outcomes, provided that conducive background conditions (‘contexts’) exist. Using evidence from the feasibility trial preceding a full randomised controlled trial (RCT), this paper assesses the empirical validity of the initial logic model of a new group-based weight management intervention: PROGROUP, designed for patients with body mass index (BMI) ≥40 kg/m2 or ≥35 kg/m2 with comorbidities. We aimed to test …

Medical drone delivery (MDD), defined as the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles to transport medical products, is an emerging technological innovation responding to persistent health supply chain challenges in rural and low-resource settings. Within sub-Saharan Africa, MDD systems have demonstrated large-scale success in improving key health outcomes, health supply chain efficiency, and reductions in medical product stockouts and wastage. However, the existing evidence base on the effectiveness of this technology is dominated by quantitative, performance-based evaluations, with limited emphasis on the community-driven mechanisms that shape such outcomes. Drawing on original qualitative research, this article presents a qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) …

Small cell carcinoma is a highly lethal cancer variant often found with neuroendocrine (NE) features, as exemplified by small cell lung cancer and small cell NE prostate cancer (SCPC). A genome-wide CRISPR dependency screen using SCPC models generated through human prostate cell transformation identifies a requirement for the transcription factor E2F3. E2F3 dependency is linked to RB inactivation, a near universal occurrence across small cell cancers. The requirement for E2F3 is shared by RB-deficient cells originating from the prostate, lung, and adnexa. In RB-deficient cancer cells, E2F3 inhibition restrains cell cycle progression, proliferation, and tumor growth in vivo. Inhibition of …

Auditing GenAI literature search workflows, this article evaluates whether AI-assisted literature review retrieval is traceable, metadata-accurate, and reproducible under student-facing conditions. Across four systems and two retrieval postures, the study finds that natural-language prompting often produces unstable or unverifiable citation outputs, while Boolean translation improves auditability but not full reproducibility. The article offers a practical framework for accountable AI-assisted literature search, citation verification, DOI traceability, and transparent evidence retrieval.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) and sickle cell disease (SCD) are associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and this risk is exacerbated by hospitalization. VTE prophylaxis nonadministration is a VTE risk factor. The objective of this study was to characterize VTE prophylaxis nonadministration among patients with either CF or SCD compared with medically ill patients without CF or SCD. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of hospitalized patients who were prescribed at least 2 doses of pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis. The primary outcome was the proportion of nonadministered VTE prophylaxis doses by cohort. Multivariable logistic regression was used to …

Lower gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease (LGI-GVHD) carries morbidity and mortality for patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), with critical contributions from the intestinal microbiome. In a retrospective cohort of metagenomic sequencing of stool from patients with allo-HSCT (N = 90), we found that a reduction in specific Parabacteroides and Bacteroides species around the time of engraftment contributes to LGI-GVHD risk. Given the known diverse carbohydrate-degrading functionality of these bacteria, we investigated gene abundances for carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) and found that Parabacteroides merdae, P distasonis, and Bacteroides ovatus abundances were significantly correlated with CAZymes in patients who did not develop …

Resistance to HIF-2α inhibitors such as Belzutifan underscores the need to better understand how HIF-2α is transcriptionally regulated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Here, we uncover a cytokine-driven enhancer mechanism that sustains HIF-2α expression through the JAK1-STAT3 signaling pathway. Using a genome-wide CRISPR screen in VHL-deficient ccRCC cells, we identified SOCS3 as a key negative regulator of HIF-2α. Mechanistically, loss of SOCS3 activates JAK1-STAT3 signaling, leading to the recruitment of STAT3 to distal enhancers upstream of EPAS1 that physically loop to its promoter to drive HIF-2α transcription. This cytokine-enhancer circuit was recapitulated in ccRCC patient samples and functionally …
