Currently, the first-line treatment for the most common form of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is surgical resection, followed by risk-adapted treatments, such as chemoradiotherapy. However, with the current standard of care and even the emergence of new treatments, such as checkpoint blockade, the overall survival for advanced, recurrent disease remains high, and the prevalence of head and neck cancer is projected to continue to increase in the coming years. Thus, deeper investigation into current standard-of-care modalities, in addition to novel therapeutics, is necessary to translate potential and promising treatment options to …

The Employment Situation Of Veterans: March 2026, Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
Employment rose by 178,000 in March, while the overall unemployment rate held steady at 4.3 percent, with notable job gains in health care, construction, and transportation and warehousing. Veteran unemployment declined slightly to 3.9 percent, though younger veterans continued to experience higher unemployment rates than older veterans and their nonveteran peers. Male veteran unemployment fell, while female veteran unemployment rose and remained above that of nonveteran women. Unemployment trends varied across racial and ethnic groups, with some veteran subgroups showing higher rates than their nonveteran counterparts, though these monthly estimates can fluctuate significantly.
Maps Behind Bars: A Spatial Study Into Wrongful Convictions And Social Equality, Bailee Kinghorn, Emma Milne, Camille Heaton
Maps Behind Bars: A Spatial Study Into Wrongful Convictions And Social Equality, Bailee Kinghorn, Emma Milne, Camille Heaton
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Wrongful convictions are representative of errors in the criminal justice system. Often reflecting broad patterns of social inequality, prior research suggests that structural factors may influence the likelihood of conviction and access to legal resources. This project investigates how these social equality indicators correlate with wrongful convictions at the county level across the United States. Using data from the National Institute of Health and the National Registry of Exonerations, we aggregate measures of education, poverty, and non-English-speaking populations normalized by population density and combine them with exoneration records to create a series of comparative maps. Through spatial analysis in ArcGIS, …
Fallow Ground, Eli Kerns
Fallow Ground, Eli Kerns
Theses and Dissertations
Fallow Ground refers to the agricultural practice of intentionally leaving a field unseeded for a year or more in order to restore fertility and interrupt cycles of depletion. Although fallowing is a beneficial and necessary practice, the term has also come to signify waste or a lack of productivity. This double meaning is central to the work, reflecting a central contradiction: that withdrawal can be as vital as effort, and that rest, like labor, can function as a deliberate and sustaining act. The question I explore in this work is how to organize, understand, and live with these contradictions. Through …

Opportunities And Barriers For Innovation At The Interface Of Engineering And Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Thomas S Howlett, Jacqueline G Parchem, Kelsey L Swingle
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The development of safe and effective maternal-fetal therapeutics is significantly hindered by chronic underfunding, inequitable access to specialized care, and persistent sociopolitical stigmas surrounding women’s health. Addressing these challenges will require interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, scientists, and engineers to design accessible therapeutics for maternal-fetal healthcare.

A Platform For Acquiring And Classifying Low-Noise Electrocardiogram Signals For Applications In Cardiovascular Monitoring, Begmamat Berdimurodovich Dushanov, Narzullo Mamatov Dr.
Technical science and innovation
The early screening and continuous monitoring of cardiovascular diseases need effective acquisition and smart processing of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. In this article, we introduce a compact platform designed for the acquisition of low-noise ECG signals and classification of the signals using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN). Our compact platform consists of a low-noise analog front-end (AFE), including an instrumentation amplifier and a chain of analog filters, along with a data acquisition component designed to ensure effective suppression of baseline wander and high frequencies. Our compact platform consumes a low amount of power and can therefore be used for continuous …

Reinvesting In A Lived Experience Workforce: An Exploration Of Why Peer Support Specialists Leave The Field, Morgan Rae Pelot
Reinvesting In A Lived Experience Workforce: An Exploration Of Why Peer Support Specialists Leave The Field, Morgan Rae Pelot
Dissertations and Theses
Peer support specialists (PSSs) are individuals who use their lived experience of mental health challenges along with formal training to provide peer support to other individuals experiencing similar challenges. PSSs have only become integrated into the mental health care system within the last several decades. Recently, a study reported a trend of PSSs leaving the field of peer support, but there is a gap in the literature exploring factors that may influence this decision. This study examined if self-efficacy, motivations to join the workforce, and negative work experiences were related to workforce retention. A secondary cross-sectional analysis was conducted on …

Relational Histories: Exploring The Transmission Of Ceramic Technology In The Norton Sound Region Through Petrographic Analysis, Laurel Michelle Diciuccio
Dissertations and Theses
Ceramic technology in the Bering Strait region of the North American Arctic dates to approximately 2,500 BP and is broadly divided into two traditions: the Early Arctic (Norton, pre-1,500 BP) and the Late Arctic (Thule, post-1,500 BP). While Arctic ceramic studies have focused on raw material sourcing, vessel use, and cooking performance, this research investigates forming methods and ceramic fabrics to better understand their place in the technological behavioral chain. This approach fills a gap in the literature by centering on vessel construction and offers new insights from Norton Sound sites, including type sites Iyatayet and Nukleet.

Background
Measurement-Based Care (MBC) uses repeated standardized psychological assessments to monitor treatment progress and guide clinical decision-making. Although MBC improves outcomes when results are discussed collaboratively, adoption across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) remains below 50%, particularly in virtual and rural settings. This pre-implementation evaluation explored provider perspectives to inform development of a digital MBC workflow for rural tele-mental health settings.
Methods
Using the Alacrity Center’s Discover, Design, Build, and Test model and User Centered Design, we conducted a pre-implementation survey of mental health providers at a VHA Medical Center providing care to rural and highly rural Veterans in South …

Systemic neoadjuvant chemotherapy, often combined with immunotherapy, is the standard of care for early-stage, non-breast cancer susceptibility gene (BRCA)-mutant triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, up to 70% of patients retain residual disease after treatment, which is linked to recurrence and mortality within 5 years. To define mechanisms of resistance, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing on orthotopic TNBC patient-derived xenografts during a cycle of treatment with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (AC). Clustering identified four tumor epithelial cell populations, with basal cells enriched in residual tumors. These basal cells up-regulated C15ORF48, a paralog of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase associated subunit FA4 …
The Philosopher Of The Future: What Is It To Us That Herr Nietzsche Has Become Well Again?, Erli Mertika
The Philosopher Of The Future: What Is It To Us That Herr Nietzsche Has Become Well Again?, Erli Mertika
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that Nietzsche thought he was a genuine philosopher despite seeming at times to suggest that he was not. I arrive at this conclusion by comparing his thoughts on genuine philosophers with his thoughts about himself in an effort to show that his self-professed task is identical to theirs.
There are two types of genuine philosophers in Nietzsche’s late works: an old species that relied on a belief in “God” to legislate their values, and a new one that must do so without it. The former cannot perform their task after the death of God, which is why …
The Myth Of The Immigrant As A Criminal: Rhetoric, Otherness, And The Legal Construction Of Danger, Katerina Fernandez
The Myth Of The Immigrant As A Criminal: Rhetoric, Otherness, And The Legal Construction Of Danger, Katerina Fernandez
Immigration and Human Rights Law Review
The figure of the “criminal immigrant” occupies a central place in contemporary U.S. immigration discourse, shaping public perception, enforcement priorities, and legal doctrine. Yet a substantial body of empirical research consistently demonstrates that immigrants—both documented and undocumented—commit crimes at lower rates than native-born citizens. This Note examines why the narrative of immigrant criminality persists despite this evidence and how it influences the development and operation of immigration law. It argues that “immigrant” functions not only as a legal category but also as a socially constructed marker of Otherness, encompassing perceived differences in race, language, culture, and religion. Through this lens, …
The Modern Shift In The Roman Catholic Understanding Of Speaking In Tongues, John Gresham
The Modern Shift In The Roman Catholic Understanding Of Speaking In Tongues, John Gresham
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Over the course of the twentieth century, the Roman Catholic understanding of speaking in tongues shifted from viewing the gift as always and exclusively xenolalia (infused knowledge of foreign languages) to a view of tongues as primarily glossolalia (inspired praise not in any known human language). This theological shift is reflected in standard Catholic reference works and in the ordinary teachings of the Catholic magisterium. This shift was a result of Catholic acceptance of historical-critical study of Scripture, a new understanding of charisms, ecumenical openness to the gifts of other Christian traditions, and most significantly, the rise of the Charismatic …

Exploring Scms And Fibers For Structural Build-Up In 3d Printing Using Penetration Test, Shiva Kumar Goud Kasani
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Additive manufacturing with cementitious materials advances rapidly, but predicting structural build-up is critical for 3D printed structure buildability. Various supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and fibers are commonly used to enhance structural build-up in 3D printing. Evaluating their effects is necessary for successful printing. In this research, this effect is studied for common SCMs, including fly ash and silica fume, and fibers including polypropylene (0.375% and 0.75% by volume), steel (0.75% and 1.5% by volume), and hemp fibers (0.375% and 0.75% by volume). The Structural build-up was quantified through continuous static yield stress measurements (via vane rheometer, penetration, and slump) during …
Synthesis And Hydrothermal Evaluation Of Poly(Styrene Phosphonate) For Conformance Control In Geothermal Reservoirs, Sara Mccauley
Synthesis And Hydrothermal Evaluation Of Poly(Styrene Phosphonate) For Conformance Control In Geothermal Reservoirs, Sara Mccauley
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
As atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, geothermal energy has emerged as a promising energy alternative to fossil fuels. A barrier to widespread implementation and energy production efficiency is macro-heterogeneity of the rock matrix. Cracks, void spaces, and flow conduits divert fluid flow away from unswept portions of the geothermal reservoir and can cause cooling of the reservoir. Flow heterogeneity has been treated in oil reservoirs by injecting hydrogel particles that travel preferentially to ultra-high permeability zones and selectively block fluid flow in these regions. We are applying polymer hydrogels that withstand hydrothermal conditions of 225 up to 275°C …

Adaptive Parallel Downloader For Large Genomic Datasets, Rasman Mubtasim Swargo
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Modern next-generation sequencing (NGS) projects routinely generate terabytes of data that researchers download from public repositories such as SRA and ENA. Existing download tools typically employ static concurrency settings, leading to inefficient bandwidth utilization and prolonged download times under dynamic network conditions. We introduce FastBioDL, a parallel downloader for large biological datasets with an adaptive concurrency controller. FastBioDL frames downloading as an online optimization problem, using a utility function and gradient descent to adjust the number of concurrent socket streams during runtime. This approach maximizes throughput while minimizing resource overhead. Evaluations on public genomic datasets show that FastBioDL achieves up …

Many places around the world are developing regional innovation ecosystems to spur regional economic. Many innovation ecosystems fail or barely maintain their initial momentum after a few years. In this paper, we identified challenges and best practices facing innovation ecosystems interviews with the innovation ecosystem stakeholders. We employed the MIT REAP (Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program) model to categorize the five main stakeholders of the innovation ecosystem: entrepreneurs, universities, industry, risk capital, and government. Our initial results indicated the following: (a) Access to capital and talented workforce; (b) Stakeholder discovery process is one of the critical areas to understand the basic …
Introducing Gridtrees For Streaming, Scalable Hierarchical Data Visualization, Nathan Tibbetts
Introducing Gridtrees For Streaming, Scalable Hierarchical Data Visualization, Nathan Tibbetts
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
File browsing in the consumer sphere has seen very little advancement in recent years, although attempts have been made to improve upon it. With the goal of multi-level visual file browsing in mind, we present a prototype GridTree, a dynamic, recursive, stable, spatial layout data structure based on subdividing grids, represented as a hierarchy of maps whose granularity increases with depth. We motivate this work with characteristics we have identified as important for viability of a multi-level file-browser, which have become our design goals. We touch on the underlying logic of a GridTree and identify its complexity. We briefly discuss …
Simulating Thermal Diffusion Through Image-Derived Microstructures Of Ceramic Matrix Composites, Matik Heskin
Simulating Thermal Diffusion Through Image-Derived Microstructures Of Ceramic Matrix Composites, Matik Heskin
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Thermal energy transport in materials can be effectively modeled using finite element software such as COMSOL. Experimentally measured or NIST–JANAF thermal conductivity data can be used to represent material behavior within these simulations. For heterogeneous or composite materials, effective properties are often approximated using rule-of-mixtures calculations. However, this overlooks the nuanced effects caused by complex microstructural geometry. To address this limitation, imaging and coding tools such as MATLAB can be used to process scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. By thresholding the images to distinguish constituent materials, a representative mesh can be generated and imported into an FEM program. This approach …
Thermal Mirage: Towards Robust Thermal Perception Via Gan-Guided Diffusion, Nuzaer Omar
Thermal Mirage: Towards Robust Thermal Perception Via Gan-Guided Diffusion, Nuzaer Omar
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Thermal object detection systems are critical for safety sensitive applications due to their reliability under adverse conditions. However, existing robustness evaluations in thermal domain primarily focuses on physical or sensor-level perturbations, overlooking vulnerabilities from semantically realistic scene and object manipulations. We introduce Thermal Mirage, a generative framework that leverages GAN-guided diffusion to expose weaknesses in thermal detectors through controlled object and context level perturbations. Our approach learns class-conditional thermal priors via a GAN and uses diffusion to transform object appearances into ambiguous or low-saliency patterns. Simultaneously, a context module degrades scene conditions by simulating harsher night environments. Integrated with a …
Human Intention Prediction Using Cnn And Lstm Networks In Physical Human–Robot Interactions, Khosro Ghorbani Zadeh
Human Intention Prediction Using Cnn And Lstm Networks In Physical Human–Robot Interactions, Khosro Ghorbani Zadeh
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence have increased expectations for interactive robots in eldercare and assistive applications. A key challenge in creating safe and effective systems is accurately recognizing human intent and translating it into meaningful commands for robots to follow. Traditional physics-based models often fail to fully represent human force interactions due to their dynamic nature, while neural networks provide a promising alternative for predicting force-movement intentions. Multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) show potential, however, they struggle with temporal dependencies and generalization. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) help address these limitations. This study compares these architectures …
Ai-Driven Frameworks For Mitigating Rockfall Hazards, Unstable Ground Condition And Improving Safety In Underground Mine Through Thermal Imaging, Akhrorbek Narmatov
Ai-Driven Frameworks For Mitigating Rockfall Hazards, Unstable Ground Condition And Improving Safety In Underground Mine Through Thermal Imaging, Akhrorbek Narmatov
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Scaling, the removal of loose rocks from excavation walls to prevent rockfalls is a critical safety procedure in underground mining operations. Approximately a quarter of fatal mining accidents are due to rockfalls. Detecting unstable rocks during scaling and assessing ground stability remain challenging due to limited visibility, dust, and environmental conditions.
Excavation disturbs the in-situ stress state, causing stress redistribution, fracture propagation, and the formation of discontinuities that lead to loose rock blocks. Ventilation airflow affects heat transfer at exposed surfaces, amplifying temperature contrasts between intact rock and fractured blocks associated with instability.
Current practices rely on manual inspection, requiring …
Robust Federated Learning With Strategic Adversaries, Manoj Twarakavi
Robust Federated Learning With Strategic Adversaries, Manoj Twarakavi
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Federated Learning (FL) leverages the intelligence of untrusted distributed devices through collaborative training. This makes the training process susceptible to malicious behavior. Existing defense mechanisms largely consider an adversary who attacks a proactive FL server without any adaptability. However, they overlook the presence of a strategic adversary. To address this challenge, our work proposes a Robust Game-theoretic framework where the adversary is both strategic and is equipped with the capability of performing large-scale poisoning attacks.
Harnessing Wavefront Shaping Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara
Harnessing Wavefront Shaping Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) enable deep, non-invasive sensing in biological tissue but are fundamentally limited by the photon budget - most injected light is lost to scattering before reaching the detector. Wavefront shaping (WFS) can enhance signal strength inside scattering media via interference, but the conventional diffusion-based sensitivity model breaks down under coherent illumination. We develop a microscopic theory of optical sensitivity that captures interference effects neglected by diffusion theory. We prove analytically that the microscopic and diffusive descriptions coincide under random illumination and identify WFS strategies that enhance sensitivity beyond this limit. The maximum …
Variational Data Assimilation With Steepest Descent Method For Coupled Time-Dependent Stokes-Darcy Model With Bjsj Interface Condition, Yafang Hei
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Variational data assimilation (VDA) determines the initial condition of a dynamical system by minimizing the mismatch between model predictions and observed data. This work studies VDA for the time-dependent Stokes–Darcy system with the BJSJ interface condition. The problem is formulated as a PDE-constrained optimization problem, and the first-order optimality system is derived using the Gâteaux derivative and adjoint variables. A steepest descent method is applied for efficient computation. Spatial and temporal discretizations are carried out using the finite element method and backward Euler scheme, respectively. Numerical results confirm accuracy and convergence.

Dispersive Shock And Rogue Waves In Two-Dimensional Quantum Droplets, Farhana Bristy
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Quantum droplets, are liquid type configurations stabilized by the balance between attractive mean-field interactions and repulsive quantum fluctuations. They provide highly flexible platforms for the quantum simulation of hydrodynamic phenomena using ultracold gases. Here, we explore the nonlinear quantum dynamics of two-dimensional quantum droplets under Riemann initial conditions. The steepness of the latter facilitates the emergence of radially symmetric dispersive shock waves (DSWs) when quantum fluctuations dominate. In particular, the ensuing DSWs travel from the potential edges toward the center where they collide and through their interference high amplitude spatially localized rogue wave structures emerge. In contrast, tuning the interactions …
Distributed Control Plane For Cross-Silo Federated Learning, Rabin Pandey
Distributed Control Plane For Cross-Silo Federated Learning, Rabin Pandey
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
Cross-silo federated learning (FL) trains shared models across geographically distributed institutions without centralizing raw data, but its reliance on wide-area networks makes round completion time highly sensitive to heterogeneous link conditions, congestion, and straggler clients. Existing SDN-based FL frameworks address this through centralized traffic engineering, an approach that breaks down when silos span independent administrative domains where no single entity can maintain complete, timely network knowledge. We replace the centralized control plane with a fully distributed overlay in which each silo gateway operates as an equal peer, continuously probing local links, exchanging EWMA-smoothed metrics via bounded gossip, and computing least-cost …

The development of highly sensitive real-time sensing platforms for selectively detecting dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) is of significant clinical importance since these are closely associated with several neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we report copper telluride (Cu₂Te) nanostructure as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the simultaneous detection of dopamine and norepinephrine. Cu₂Te exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward both DA and NE oxidation, as demonstrated by detailed electrochemical measurements. High sensitivities of 24 and 40 µA cm⁻² µM⁻¹ for DA and NE, respectively, were obtained with a wide linear detection range of 10–200 nM and low limit of detection (LOD), 31 nM for …
