Improving Utilization Of Nonpharmacological Interventions In Adult Oncology Patients, Alison Keck
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Anxiety is one of the most prevalent symptoms oncology patients experience and clinical guidelines support the use of nonpharmacological interventions (NPI) as a primary method for managing anxiety.
Local Problem: At a suburban, community hospital, a nurse perception survey revealed staff were “always” offering medications 69% of the time but NPIs were “never” used anywhere between 38-81% of the time. In a sampling of patients, only 33% recalled they had used NPIs. A Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) tool revealed that 69% of patients had higher than average levels of anxiety on the unit.
Methods: This quality …

Thelephorales fungi are considered important ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) in forest ecosystems, yet the patterns of diversity and distribution and the processes that shape them remain poorly understood. This study aims to address this research gap by conducting an exploratory analysis of Thelephorales fungi in soil and litter across various habitat types and environmental characteristics. To do so, we used data collected and synthesized by the Climush project, a multi-year, systematic sampling of macrofungal diversity across North America, that aims to assess sexual (sporocarp and spore trap data) and asexual (soil and endophyte metabarcode data) diversity and distribution in relation to …

Biodigestor Functionality And Commercialization Of Organic Fertilizer For Smallholder And Productive Farms In Kenya, Jessica Garofalo, Mia Ingram
Biodigestor Functionality And Commercialization Of Organic Fertilizer For Smallholder And Productive Farms In Kenya, Jessica Garofalo, Mia Ingram
Miller Center Fellowship
Agriculture has a long history in Kenya with roots of both sustenance farming and commercial farming. Agriculture used to make up over two fifths of their GDP and while that number has shrunk, it still makes up around one fifth of the economy making it an important part of the job market. Subsistence farming is still a prevalent way of life in Kenya, especially in more rural areas. As a whole, the Kenyan agricultural industry employs and nourishes a large portion of the nation’s population and yet, in light of climate change, more and more farmers have become reliant on …

Land-use change (LUC) is a key driver of biodiversity loss, altering the structure and function of ecosystems through human activities such as urbanization and agriculture. This change has led to habitat loss and fragmentation, resulting in the rapid decline of avian populations globally. Wildlife rehabilitation centers are the primary responders for injured birds and their records provide valuable data to monitor potential factors impacting bird populations. However, these datasets are underutilized in research. This study examined how LUC in the Front Range affects the likelihood and circumstances of admission of injured birds to the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Alliance (RMWA) in …

The Power Of Community In Inspiring And Pushing Youth Into Higher Education As A Means Of Improvement, Laurine Faro
Community Engagement Student Work
This research highlighted family and community members’ role in supporting student success in Higher Education. I analyzed four cases/organizations/communities that had been effective in their efforts to support student success. I conducted a meta-analysis of organizations that had programs in place to drive student success. Lack of support from parents, teachers, schools and neighborhoods all seemed to contribute to a lack of belief in student success both at the personal level and the community level. In the neighborhoods studied, inadequate academic preparation and stability, and the lack of a support system often persisted into young adulthood, making the opportunities for …

School Participatory Budgeting: A Civic Education Model For Critical Youth Empowerment, Joshua Rodriguez
Community Engagement Student Work
Young people's potential for meaningful participation in school has yet to be fully realized. They are constrained to low levels of involvement and remain, for the most part, controlled in most decision-making environments. Youth engagement models all strive to engage youth fully, but only some do. A School Participatory Budgeting (SPB) class at a New England High School offers a model for actualizing youth engagement at a critical level. Through SPB, youth demonstrate six dimensions of critical youth empowerment (1) a welcoming environment, (2) meaningful participation, (3) equitable power-sharing between youth and adults, (4) engagement in critical reflection on interpersonal …

Portage, Wisconsin is a place defined by passing through it. It was once a major hub of passage, via river and canal, from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. Today, the town, home to just over 10,000 people, is little more than a distant suburb of the state capital, Madison, 35 miles to the south. On the drive up 91-North, billboards advertise Ho-Chunk casinos, water parks in the Wisconsin Dells, and the world’s largest Culver’s, a fast-food chain famous for its frozen custard. There are numerous roadside attractions: outside a gas station, a life-sized statue of a pink elephant …

The idea of a colorblind society and constitution is a dream, not reality. Importantly, the idea of colorblindness has been used to hijack laws and constitutional provisions specifically created to right societal wrongs against minoritized persons, especially Black persons. Take for example, the recent controversy surrounding affirmative action in higher education. The Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, both created to secure the rights of Black citizens, have been co-opted to instead deprive them of opportunities. The latest example of this is a Supreme Court case decided this past summer—Students …
