The Pseudo-Liberation Of Women And Feminism In American Cinema Of The 1970s, Claudia Smallwood Jan 2024

The Pseudo-Liberation Of Women And Feminism In American Cinema Of The 1970s, Claudia Smallwood

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

This thesis provides an analysis of how women, feminism, and female liberation is depicted in American film of the 1970s, in context to genre revisionism and the second wave of feminism. The portrayal of women in film is reimagined due to the Hollywood Renaissance taking place in the mid-sixties and throughout the nineteen-seventies. As genre revisionists began re-working and undoing the tools of classical Hollywood cinema, the role of women began to shift as well, creating a form of counter-cinema. Films of this era, rather intentionally or unintentionally, start to address relevant issues of marital status, liberation, sexuality, and the …

Data gaps also exist regarding farmworkers’ perceived risk and control related to pesticides, information that is critical to develop protective interventions.

Objective: We aimed to compare urinary pesticide biomarker concentrations between Latino and Latina farmworkers and examine associations with occupational characteristics, risk perceptions, perceived control, and protective behaviors.

Methods: We enrolled a convenience sample of 62 farmworkers (30 men and 32 women) during the pesticide spray season from April–July 2022 in southwestern Idaho. Participants were asked to …

The Unseen Women Of Japan: Marginalization Of Single Mothers, C. Bo Boja

International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses

In recent times, Japan has been grappling with a shockingly wide gender gap, as calculated by the Global Gender Gap Report. The contradiction of a prosperous country with disproportionate gender inequality points to underlying trends within Japanese society that continue to work towards undermining women’s opportunities and rights, especially those who do not fit into the ideal standards set for women, specifically single mothers. Studies have shown that multiple external societal factors work towards perpetuating the poverty of single mothers. This thesis analyzes primary and secondary research from government data, academic articles, books, news articles, and interviews of this population's …

Japanese Women In The Workforce: Tradition Versus Equality, Sierra Kehrwieder Jan 2024

Japanese Women In The Workforce: Tradition Versus Equality, Sierra Kehrwieder

International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses

For decades, women in Japan have advocated for gender equality, especially for increased support in entering the work force. However, it has been difficult to increase women’s rights without compromising traditional ideals. As more women needed to enter the workforce in the 1990s due to economic circumstances, gender equality has become increasingly called into question. The role of the office lady and the role of female politicians reflect the limited role women have in the workplace. This is reinforced by state legislation, which are created by a government overrepresented by men. These policies aim to promote economic development and address …

Master of Arts in Digital Journalism

The training of journalists has become an important element in enhancing the development of the media due to the popular global conjecture that a developed media consequently helps citizens to make informed decisions. But a number of factors like the choice of areas for training that needs funding and challenges media experiences in enhancing media development have over the time stifled the operations of the Ugandan media limiting its ability to advance issues of public interest (McChesney, 2008:37;Nyarko, 2015).This study therefore sought to identify areas covered by the training grants in the past five years (2019-2023), analyse the contribution of …

Automated Update Tools To Augment The Wisdom Of Crowds In Geopolitical Forecasting, Amy Summerville, Cara Widmer, Brandon Minnery, Ion Juvina, Subashini Ganapathy

Psychology Faculty Publications

Despite the importance of predictive judgments, individual human forecasts are frequently less accurate than those of even simple prediction algorithms. At the same time, not all forecasts are amenable to algorithmic prediction. Here, we describe the evaluation of an automated prediction tool that enabled participants to create simple rules that monitored relevant indicators (e.g., commodity prices) to automatically update forecasts. We examined these rules in both a pool of previous participants in a geopolitical forecasting tournament (Study 1) and a naïve sample recruited from Mechanical Turk (Study 2). Across the two studies, we found that automated updates tended to improve …
