Tradition And Transformation, On Worship Among Kenyan Friends: Reconsidering Fox's Rejection Of Rituals, George Busolo Lukalo Jan 2024

Tradition And Transformation, On Worship Among Kenyan Friends: Reconsidering Fox's Rejection Of Rituals, George Busolo Lukalo

Quaker Religious Thought

From the centrality of the Bible, to baptism, to holy commu- nion, to simplicity and plain dress, to the nomination of leaders, to the use of alcohol and not swearing oaths, in his essay “Tradition and Transformation, on Worship among Kenyan Friends: Reconsidering Fox’s Rejection of Rituals,” George Busolo Lukalo examines the evolving ways in which the Kenyan Quaker church continues to consider the importance and meaning for their own context of George Fox’s rejection of rituals—sometimes complying with Fox’s precedent, but often reinstating certain ritualistic practices precisely as a way of preserving their Quaker convictions.

Rationality, Silence, And The Numinous: Exploring The Mystical Theology Of Otto, Thurman, And Panikkar, Welling Hall Jan 2024

Rationality, Silence, And The Numinous: Exploring The Mystical Theology Of Otto, Thurman, And Panikkar, Welling Hall

Quaker Religious Thought

In her essay “Rationality, Silence, and the Numinous: Exploring the Mystical Theology of Otto, Thurman, and Panikkar,” Welling Hall traces out the thought of these three important advocates of mysticism as they struggle with the relationship between rea- son and that which transcends rational comprehension, an issue of ongoing interest and concern to Quaker theology. In light of this essay, we might ask ourselves whether our rituals or lack thereof are an impediment to a deeper connection with God, or a means thereunto?

Rule Of Law As A Law Of Rules: A Template For A Sustainable Foreign Investment Protection System, Divesh Kaul Jan 2024

Rule Of Law As A Law Of Rules: A Template For A Sustainable Foreign Investment Protection System, Divesh Kaul

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

This article evaluates the relationship between rule of law and the foreign investment protection system. It illustrates that practice under foreign investment law presents the mechanism to appraise international rule of law principles. This work argues that rule of law not only provides a basis for the organization of public power but also sustains a minimum threshold of justice. A globalized rule of law, lying at the intersection of international law and economic globalization, provides the foundation of a minimum threshold and normative expectation for the international minimum standard with a focus on justice and individual rights. Accordingly, this work …

The Rise Of Sportswashing: How The Support Of The West And Global Apathy Enables International Human Rights Violations, Karan Kaushal Jan 2024

The Rise Of Sportswashing: How The Support Of The West And Global Apathy Enables International Human Rights Violations, Karan Kaushal

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

The contemporary phenomenon of sportswashing, in which authoritarian regimes, exemplified recently by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, strategically use international sports, particularly soccer and golf, to bolster their global image while deflecting attention from their human rights violations is explored to find the role of the West in enabling sportswashing. The concept of sportswashing, its contemporary relevance, and its association with the complicity of FIFA and other sporting organizations are explored. There are also other examples of Western involvement in enabling sportswashing, with a focus on the human rights abuses associated with this involvement.

A detailed definition of sportswashing across different …

International Economic Law And Its Histories, Valentina Vadi Jan 2024

International Economic Law And Its Histories, Valentina Vadi

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

International economic law is best defined as the branch of public international law that governs transnational economic relations, that is, international trade, foreign direct investment, and currency exchange. It is a field that mixes and mingles law and economics. Economic theory has predominated in international economic law literature. Yet, international economic law is not just about money, trade, and capital flows. It is also about individual lives, collective destinies, and interactions among different civilizations.

The historical evolution of global economic governance remains understudied. Yet, investigating the history of international economic law is timely and important because we can learn from …

Bilingual Students' Language Use, Identity, And Investment In Dual Language Classrooms, Stephanie Eller Jan 2024

Bilingual Students' Language Use, Identity, And Investment In Dual Language Classrooms, Stephanie Eller

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative multi-case study examined the co-construction of elementary dual language students’ language use and identity to understand how five individual students positioned themselves as bilingual individuals as well as how this relates to their investment in the language-learning process. This study also investigated the influence of translanguaging on student language use and identity expression. The classroom investment of the students was explored through the students’ identity expression, ideology and beliefs, and through forms of capital in which students expressed importance. Framed by a dynamic understanding of both language and identity, as well as investment theory, this study collected data …

Getting /Srs About Tone Tags, Sierra Morrissey Jan 2024

Getting /Srs About Tone Tags, Sierra Morrissey

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In digital modes of communication, speakers may struggle to convey their tone and emotions to their readers and interlocutors. This complication leads to questions surrounding the state of the conventions for conveying tone in digital utterances (e.g., tweets). This thesis explores one such way that speakers overcome this struggle, tone tags. Tone tags are linguistic items consisting of a forward slash and an alphabetic character or characters that serve to represent some word or phrase, generally used to indicate the intended spirit of the utterance. This thesis serves as an analysis of these items, including necessary context, an explanation of …

“We’Ll Offer Asylum Just So Long As…” The Discrimination Of Poc And Lgbtq+ Refugees In Ongoing Refugee Crises, Faith N. Schaefer Jan 2024

“We’Ll Offer Asylum Just So Long As…” The Discrimination Of Poc And Lgbtq+ Refugees In Ongoing Refugee Crises, Faith N. Schaefer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

An ongoing refugee crisis is apparent in global politics and foreign relations. Still, the way receiving countries regard certain communities in this critical period has brought to light the inhumane discrimination solely based on one’s skin color and/or sexual identity. Despite the “open arms” policy that most nations tend to project, there is an unwritten protocol along borders that some states have chosen a “pick and choose” approach when it comes to People of Color (POC) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and other gender non-conforming (LGBTQ+) individuals who are fleeing their country of origin. Any such prejudice and inequity …

The Effect Of Background Colors And Associations On Perceived Attractiveness, Help-Seeking, And Helping Behavior, Zeina Y. Ghanem Jan 2024

The Effect Of Background Colors And Associations On Perceived Attractiveness, Help-Seeking, And Helping Behavior, Zeina Y. Ghanem

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The objective of this study is to understand how background colors influence an individual's perception of another person's interpersonal attractiveness, along with how these factors affect an individual's social support giving and seeking behavior for each presented image. The study aims to explore the effects of color, attractiveness, color associations, and prosocial behaviors. Participants (N = 278) consented to take a 10-minute online survey. The background colors used were red and blue with varied saturation levels (light, medium, and dark) and a white control background. There were no significant effects of background colors and saturation lightness levels found for …

Engaging Multilingual Learners In Mathematics Learning, Parastoo Zareie Jan 2024

Engaging Multilingual Learners In Mathematics Learning, Parastoo Zareie

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

As the number of Multilingual Learner (ML) students attending public schools rises, so does the demand for those who can teach them. Research shows that due to the existence of gaps between different types of knowledge, theory, and practice, the results of teacher preparation programs are often fragmented and do not fully benefit participating teachers (Ball, 2000). To address these gaps, a Professional Development (PD) framework, called PrimeD (Professional Development, Research, IMplementation, and Evaluation) has been proposed. It organizes PD for preservice teachers into four phases of Design, Implementation, Evaluation, and Research, and works in a cyclic nature to provide …

Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins Jan 2024

Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese. Personal interactions between Black and Japanese musicians constituted a process of “grassroots globalization” that circumvented the dominance of American mass media in representing African …

A Learning-Based Framework For Autonomous Robotic Operations In Resource-Denied Environments, Joseph M. Cloud Jan 2024

A Learning-Based Framework For Autonomous Robotic Operations In Resource-Denied Environments, Joseph M. Cloud

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Establishing a sustained human presence beyond Earth necessitates the development of autonomous systems capable of extracting and utilizing local resources. On the Moon, in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) is essential to reduce the dependency on Earth-based supplies. Leveraging lunar resources such as water ice for life support and fuel production or regolith for surface construction will enable long-term lunar missions and future deep space exploration. NASA's Artemis program is targeting the lunar south pole (LSP), an area with raw, yet abundant resources available. The harsh environmental conditions present significant challenges for humans operating and installing surface infrastructure. Autonomous robotic systems are …

Bringing "Virtual" To "Reality": Enhancing Security And Usability On Vr System And Applications, Huadi Zhu

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

With the rapid advancements in computer science, electronics, optics, and related fields, virtual reality (VR) gradually penetrates into our daily lives, and is predicted to become a core technology in the near future. Despite its potentials, however, existing designs and solutions for VR applications remain at the infant stage, introducing limited usability and efficiency for real-world users. Besides, the increasing prevalence of VR presents new security and privacy threats due to the vast amount of information stored in or accessible through VR devices. To bridge this gap, we exploit and combine techniques from computer science and human biology, as well …
